Controversy: The CW's "The Girls of Thursday Night" Promo

Have you seen the new Smallville/Supernatural promo that The CW is running? It's all about the new women on some of our favorite shows -- Bela and Ruby on Supernatural, and Kara on Smallville. If you haven't seen it, check it out below.

Our first thought when we saw it? Are you kidding us? You're making Supernatural look like it's some sort of cheesy hotchickapalooza, and that's not what it's about at all! Sure, we know The CW is trying to attract new viewers, but that's the way they choose to do it? With talk of silk sheets and rolling naked in money? Come on!

And yes, we know that we sound hypocritical -- we spent an entire post talking about how hot the boys are, but that was just one aspect of an overview of the show -- what we love about Supernatural is how real and true the relationship between the brothers is, and the fact that it tackles a lot of serious issues in a not-so-serious fantasy context. The show has never really been about hot babes and boys!

We're less dubious about the inclusion of Smallville's Kara in the promo. She's a big-deal figure -- she's Supergirl, for cryin' out loud! -- and she's shown actually flying, which kicks ass. Plus, Smallville has always, to some extent, been about relationships and eye candy and the battle of the sexes. (We know, it's technically a show about the evolution of Clark Kent into Superman, but from Lana as a sorority vampire to Lois as an undercover stripper to Lex as a sexy Roman legionnaire, Smallville has never exactly shied away from the cheesecake side of entertainment.)

So what do you think? Do you love the new promo or hate it? Is any promotion good promotion, or does this make you worry about the shows? Will it work to get new viewers into the shows, or will it turn off existing viewers? And just what are the promo folks at The CW thinking, anyway? Tell all in the comments!

Personally, I don't know many people who take to that sort of advertising. It's a bit overdone, the pretty-package pushing, and it painted Bela in a pretty poor light. She kinda pissed me off at first but she's growing on me -- I know she's going to be causing a lot of issues and potentially uncovering new possiblilities, in terms of artifacts and the like (that could even help Dean out of his predicament).

But I agree with some of what the others are saying, about the boys being the draw. Push them, mix the girls in to let viewers know there are some new dynamics, and don't make it appear like cheap, skin-deep entertainment (because it ISN'T!). There's enough of that out there and for the large part, Supernatural has veered away from that.

ITA with Sarah. The new promotion featuring the "girls" of Thursday night does nothing to promote Supernatural in a positive way. The show has always been about the dynamic between Dean, the older brother who had to shoulder responsibility at a young age, and Sam, the younger brother who left law school to help Dean find their father. Paranormal investigations, helping those in need, and family bonds have been the essence of the show, not superfluous, vacuous characters.

"Eric Kripke said they were THIS CLOSE to getting the ax after season 2. Less than 3.5 million viewers is NOT successful when shows are being pulled off the air that get 8 million. I can't blame The CW for trying to increase viewers."

For starters, don't compare the CW with the big 4 networks. The execs at the CW would have multiple orgasms if they had an 8 mil viewer program. Gilmore Girl's demise sealed the return of OTH. Low rated VM had no chance in returning - despite Dawn's love for it. The CW made a mistake of picking up 7th Heaven instead of Everwood.

Next...forget last year. Right now, Supernatural is the CW's 4th highest rated program out of 14 (OTH not included) and 2nd highest rated scripted program. Only Smackdown, ANTM, & SV have higher ratings. All other programs are 2.6mil and under. This week Reaper hit a series low at 2.4 (i think it premiered at about 3.3mil.) and Aliens dipped below 2 mil. GG is steady between 2.5 & 2.55 (well below the premier). Life is Wild is hovering above 1 mil. CW Now a pathetic 750k, and Online Nation was rightfully cancelled.

The CW is trying all they can to get people to tune into this network. Problem is they don't have any clue how to do it. Especially since their development slate has yet to create a program with intruige that has the ability to bring in a wide range audience. All their new programs are too restrictive in the demographic. The CW should can their teenybopper image, but it may be too late for that. Especially if the strike continues into pilot season.

What I'm trying to say...on the CW standpoint...the girls were not intended to "save" Supernatural, but to increase overall viewership on the CW. (add to the so-called "breakout" that was to be the 2007-08 season)

IMO it backfired because:
1) the 2 episodes that premiered Ruby and Bela are the 2 lowest rated this season. The highest rated? Bedtime Stories, which neither Katie or Lauren was in.
2)SPN is down in viewership this season.

SPN is not the only program down. With the exception of Smackdown and SV, all returning programs are down in viewers, including ANTM.

The CW has major issues. The strike may only add to them.

Kripke's intention with adding Ruby was a good one, but casting has to be dead on with this type of recurring character. Bela is an unnecessary "regular" recurring role. Her showing up more than once or twice a season is not believable for an on-the-road program. In addition, it isn't necessary for both characters to be 20 somethings. A thirty or forty something doesn't have sex appeal? (Ashton Kutcher would beg to differ).

I'm rambling aren't I?

SPN is on soon. Only downside is that I know "mercenary turned hunter-detective" Bela's appearance is forced into the story. Sam and Dean just happen to run into her this soon in this large country...how may square miles is the United States anyway?

Sorry...had to throw that in.

later

Do these people not realise just how many people tune in to Supernatural because of the boys? I mean, forget that this promo shows little of what Supernatural is about and how it degrades the show completely, not showing off its best points. No, fact is that a lot of people who watch this do so because of the family/brothers part of it... and Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. People tune in to watch the guys. They are the draw.

This season have been such a sad experience for me that I actually got over the top giddy during last week's episode. It was far from one of the best episodes ever but it felt so good because it felt old school, back to basis, Supernatural. No random chicks, few extras, the boys together = Magical recipe.

If the writers strike is not gonna kill the show then the girlyness will... well, for me anyway.

Eric Kripke said they were THIS CLOSE to getting the ax after season 2. Less than 3.5 million viewers is NOT successful when shows are being pulled off the air that get 8 million. I can't blame The CW for trying to increase viewers.

I don't believe the show was ::thisclose:: to being cancelled. It was one of the CW's highest rated scripted shows and both did well in the demographic and retained a good percentage of it's lead-in's viewers in what is arguably the worst timeslot on television because it's against the two highest rated shows. Dawn "The Destroyer" Ostroff was probably playing a game of chicken with Kripke to get him to do what she's always wanted him to do and not only did he blink, he rolled and played dead and gave her everything she wanted. She wanted it brighter, it's way brighter(and last season the show was mocking that idea, when they fold, they fold all the way). She wanted more chicks, we get not just one but TWO.

The reason the CW doesn't get viewers is because they don't have a clue what viewers want. They advertized Gossip Girl out the wazoo and it gets lower ratings than Supernatural ever has.

Does the CW think males aged 18-25 only watch tv programs with "hot chicks" and don't pay attention to an actress's talent or lack thereof? Please, give them more credit than that. The CW has absolutely no idea what males and females of all ages are interested in watching.

Also, this promo wouldn't get me to watch Supernatural.

Wish the CW would allow Kripke and Co. to create their own promos for Supernatural. (not to mention leave suggestions of character additions/ages and storylines to the creativity of the writers.)

This promo is insulting to the loyal viewers that love Supernatural. The fan base isn't there to watch hot girls and romance stories. They are a serious group who love the brother interaction, the mythology and the amazing acting of your two leads. The addition of the no-talent girls to "spice" things up is running Supernatural's appeal for me. This ad is making it clear that the CW has no idea why Supernatural is doing so well in the toughest timeslot on TV. Screwing with the formula to bring in more babes is going to kill the show.

the promo had nothing to do with the shows at all. it just showed some T&A and that was about it.

why CAN'T Thursday's be "just for the boys"?? because isn't every OTHER show on this damn station about women?? we can't have ONE night where the men just kick some ass on their own??

it's bad enough Smallville turned into The Lana Lang Show....and now it's turning into Supergirl. and now on Supernatural the show that was about two BROTHERS hunting together has thrown in two random chicks who just HAPPEN to run into them all the time....now...i don't know if the writers somehow forgot, but America is quite a big country. do they HONESTLY think we're going to believe that they keep running into these chicks at random??

I have to laugh when people say the show was successful in the first two seasons.

Eric Kripke said they were THIS CLOSE to getting the ax after season 2. Less than 3.5 million viewers is NOT successful when shows are being pulled off the air that get 8 million. I can't blame The CW for trying to increase viewers.

And it's not that male viewers are more important--it's that they're trying to balance it. They're not trying to chase the women away, but add to us.

Nothing like continuing to promote the idea that sex, and nothing else can sell a TV show.
I hope the CW gets the audience they're looking for because the people I know, who are looking for great storytelling and insightful characterization are looking elsewhere.

The people running CW are amazingly irresponsible to the shareholders of CBS/Warner Bros. and to the TV audience. You have a program in Supernatural with plenty of eye-candy for young women (two good looking young men who are fine actors), plenty of action for the guys, good writing, a unique play on family through a brother bond, and the only real horror scripted series on network tv. It has held up in the ratings in the most competitive time periord in network television. It consistently gets good critical reviews. Your only show to do so. So what is your approach to promoting it? Announce after its second season that is was reluctantly renewed. And, then suggest in third year promotion-- the little you manage to do--that you are bringing in two kick-ass females to save this marginal program. CW's promotional efforts send a clear message that the network does not like the program it is supposedly promoting and wishes it were something else.
Despite all that, the creators of the series have stuck to the program's basic structure, and in its third season(still in the time-spot from hell), Supernatural is CW's second most popular scripted series. When is someone with some business sense going to step into this situation and point out the obvious: this potentially valuable asset for Warner Brothers and CW is being grossly missmanaged.
You have a gem of a series in Supernatural. One that should run for years and entertain a solid audience and make money for its creators, marketers, and advertizers. Please promote the series as is, and give it a better time period. And, how about promoting the two young actors who have given the CW one of the few programs it can be proud of?

I actually thought it was funny. Granted, it didn't show what supernatural is about, but it's just showing that there are new characters. And that they're bringing another level of comedy to it.

I really don't like the promo.

If they wanted to do the girls of Thursday night, why not use the women on SV last year? It's like the promo monkeys at the CW are just now figuring out that SV consists of a female cast. It completely shits on the 2 main female actresses on the show, Kristin Kreuk and Allison Mack. They have been on the show for 7 fraking years and to just gloss over them sucks. It really is sad. The one thing about the promo I do like is that they finally decided to use Allison Mack in one. CW promo monkeys get on ya grind please. Put the actresses who deserve the recognition in your promos, not ones that the fans are not invested in. kthanks bye.

Hmm..The SPN girls are a good new spine to SPN, But arent the Boys the main characters......iI love this show the whinchester Boys are what make the show fun and worth watching. But Im going to give the "new" characters a chance and hope for the best..I live for thursdays and this show! so hope the girls dont drag the show or the boys down.

To GA.

Girls yucky? I think you have the wrong idea. Most women love strong, kick-ass female characters. I adored Sarah Michelle as Buffy and Eliza Dushku on Tru Calling was awesome. Plus, have you ever seen Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2? Dude, she was smoking hot and could kill you with one hand tied behind her back! That is what women want from well-written female characters. (And for me, I like it when people (male or female) actually have acting talent).

But I am telling you Ruby is a lightweight. My 11 year old nephew could take her down. She isn't believable as a hunter or even a black-hearted demon.

The only reason I am saying get rid of Ruby is that: a.) her character is a Mary Sue. Seen it before and it was done better, and
b.) having Bela and Ruby on the show splits up Jared and Jensen's scenes into Sam/Ruby and Dean/Bela. I watch the show for Sam & Dean interaction, not to see Katie channeling Sharon Stone from "Basic Instinct" (and doing it very badly).

So, I think you missed the point, girls aren't "yucky," unless they are poorly written, cannot act or fight, and take up too much screen time from the STARS of the show. I'd take 100 Buffy the Vampire Slayers over one Ruby anyday. Now that was a chick who could kick-ass and take numbers at the same time. Too bad Kripke didn't cast someone like Sarah Michelle when he was looking for Ruby. Now then I might have bought into Ruby and she'd have been less yucky. :)

The show had a winning formula that made it the only show of it's genre to survive it's first season and built on that for a spectacular second season. To go and mess with that formula now, to me, is ridiculous, all to pull in the coveted male viewers, since we women viewers obviously mean nothing. And that's insulting.

Uh no... women viewers mean lots but they don't want to just stay with women viewers because well... they are missing out on 50% of the population that way!

Nightmare...I'm having a nightmare.

The CW isn't using their extremely dedicated, hard-working men of Supernatural (Jared and Jensen), to promote the show, but the
badly acted new characters that were forced into the storyline?! WTF?????

As quoted by Dean in the pilot episode: "NO CHICK FLICK MOMENTS"

Posted by Brian: "Dawn Ostroff likes to mess with perfectly good shows"

What Dawn O likes and wants on the CW is "GIRL POWER". Neither Supernatural or Smallville is about this concept, but that is the manner in which these programs are being promoted. these aren't buffy or alias or dark angel or charmed...hello...dawn...do you realize this?

On another note: makes me wonder what type of pressure the CW put on Kripke to hire actresses aged 20-25 for the Ruby and Bela roles. These characters could easily be played be actesses between 30 and 50.

This promo does not do Supernatural justice.

Allison Mack:
More than just a sidekick.
She wons 2 Teen choice awards.CW read this article. Allison is a diamond. She is the better actress of the CW. Allison 135 episodes. Laura 5 eps.???

I’ve been hearing a lot of complaints about the inclusion of women in the show because viewers think it will interfere with the interactions between the brothers, but done well, I think it could enhance the interaction and add more tension to the plot.
I think the writers know this, but the problem is they are not doing it well. The casting leaves a lot to be desired in the talent department and the women themselves are not believable. I cannot get into them. They’re not edgy. They’re not visibly strong or gritty or snarky enough to hold their own on screen with the boys. Watery and flat in comparison to the rich and varied complexity that we love about the Winchesters.
I think they need the female touch. I think it can be done well. I think it can be entertaining and dramatic and a powerful motivator that enhances the experience of Sam and Dean…
I just don’t think Ruby and Bela are gonna cut it.

I miss the WB. At least it was run like a real network, where all shows get relatively equal promotion and they had a slight range of viewing products to offer. They seemed to understand and promote Supernatural properly - and left the creativity of the show to its producers.

Dawn needs to keep her personal creative preferences out of Supernatural. She has said openly that she doesn't "get it," which, newsflash - she's not the one who needs to like it and understand it, her viewers are. All she seems to talk about, promote and love are girly girly soapy shows like Gossip Girl. And you can't build a network on that.

Get a clue!

I understand the need to showcase new characters and casts and such, but must it be done at the expense of the regular cast? What about the Winchesters? You know the actual main characters of the show? I think Ruby and Bela are great additions to the cast, but I don't watch the show for them.

Same goes for Clark and Lex on Smallville. Is this now Karaville? It's great that the promo people remembered the other three *main* female leads, but shoving Kara out front, a part-timer on the show, while fan faves like Allison are stuck in the back? WTH? Someone tell me when Smallville returns, and Karaville takes a hike.

Lame. Totally lame.

I don't like Bela OR Ruby...they're cliched characters who are there to make young men pant after them. Why? I think it's perfectly obvious that the majority of Supernatural's audience is female.

Are the producers and CW executives so fearful of being different that they had to add the same stupid storylines that are on every other show? Apparently so, otherwise they would have continued the story of the Winchester Brothers, on the road, dealing with urban legends and trying to solve the mystery of their mother's death. Instead, we've got demons and hunters and kick-ass chicks and gore. Big whoop. If I wanted that, I would have helped keep Buffy and Charmed on the air.

I didn't like the promo. I didn't feel it represented SN very well. And the whole, rolling naked in money line, made me cringe.
Right now i'm still on the fence about the new additions. Ruby is tolerable so far, although she needs to step her acting up a bit.
Bela i'm afraid however, has great potential to be annoying and unnecessary. If anything will feel forced on this show, I feel it will be that character, if it isn't handled in very very small doses.
Which is weird for me to say, because orginally I thought I was going to like her more.

I understand the need for expanding the hunting world, and adding new recurring characters. But I think there was better ways to do that, than the route that's being taken.
But time will tell. It depends where they go with it.

I didn't like the promo, not because it was about the girls, but because it was just plain stupid.

Anyways, I am very excited about Ruby and the things she can do, and I will argue that Cassidy may not have been the best choice, but she was still a good one - I don't feel let down by her acting or appearance at all. Ruby would want to possess someone who can manipulate people by being easy on the eyes - and that's Cassidy. Her snark is good, too. People need to be more open-minded about her.
I thought I was going to like Bela more but she has made me cringe repeatedly thus far and the fact that next week's show seems to be more about her than the boys bugs me. It's quite a sticky spot - I dislike Cassidy as a person but love her character, and the opposite is true for Bela. -sigh-

I'm not a big Smallville fan but the fact that that show has three other young pretty female stars and they were barely in that promo was...well, it wasn't wonderful.

But I laugh at how you people (CW Blog) can go on and on about Jared and Jensen being hot and try to get in good with fans by ranting about Ruby and Bela. You know what? You do come off as hypocritical.

Actually, I AM a genius, GA. I tape the episodes on the off chance that neither of the girls will be in it and last night it finally paid off. I get to see the brother interaction that I want and none of the nonsense that goes with the girls.

Oh, and gender has NOTHING to do with this, to reply to your "eww, girls" comment, too. They could've introduced two MALE characters and I wouldn't like them any better.

The show had a winning formula that made it the only show of it's genre to survive it's first season and built on that for a spectacular second season. To go and mess with that formula now, to me, is ridiculous, all to pull in the coveted male viewers, since we women viewers obviously mean nothing. And that's insulting.

Someone actually stopped watching Supernatural because of Ruby and Bela and less brotherly interaction? You missed a hell of an episode full of brotherly interaction just last night, genius. I appreciated it for having had to wait. Look, the promo is lame but it's not the end of the world. Like it's been said, the promo only airs during Top Model and Gossip Girl. Who's gonna see it?

CALM DOWN. The show is great this season. I think it's better than it was the first two seasons. Shows that follow the exact same formula episode after episode get stale. Supernatural is anything but that, especially after last night with that shocking ending and Dean walking away from Sam in the hospital. Now that's emotional stuff that rip the heart out of anyone who has an attention span higher than a two year old's and who doesn't scream, "Ewwwww, girls...yucky!!"

This promo totally fails to represent what Supernatural is about in any way. But it's still promotion, which can't be all bad.

I was very open to the new girls and all for giving them a chance. And chance given; Ruby is acceptable, but too forced. Bella is just unnecessary and annoying. I'm sorry, but what is a stuck up british chick doing on my gritty all American show? If she'd only have been in Born Under a Bad Sign, then I'd be fine with her. But since we get to see her and the actress's wooden acting more, yeah, I'm a bit irked. Frankly, the characters and actresses aren't worth one Ellen Harvell and Samantha Harris. *hint hint*

As long as Sam and Dean are hunting monsters in their Chevy to the classic rock music; I'm happy. But it'd be nice if it felt more like the show we all fell in love with. Two brothers on the road, killing evil. I understand that the show has to grow, but does everyone they come across have to be in on their big family secret? It takes away what was once so special and unique.

I don't mind the promo's purpose: cool chicks are awesome!
They actually used Allison Mack in a spot, which adds to the awesome. Just wish she was a little more of a focus since she deserve it, having been on the show since the first season and having been moved up in the opening titles.

Oh well, can't complain too much. Laura V. is great and glad to see Allison get some love.

I don't think the CW has any idea how to promote Supernatural. As far as this new promo, I was upset at first but can you blame them they want more guys watching this show (because for some reason it validates the show to have guys watching the show over women). Also how many times have they played up the sex appeal of Padalecki and Ackles? It seems like a lot. The promo could really go either way. Finally pull in some new viewers just really piss off the old ones.

It's great to see the CW finally include the supremely talented Allison Mack in the promos after having mostly ignored her for so long. She's not only the best actress on the show but every bit as beautiful as the other girls, if not more so, and it's rather an insult to put her in the background like that. Allison Mack has been on this show from the very first episode, and has finally been bumped up in the credits which should have happened long ago. As such, she should be front and center with the other girls.

Allison, and Chloe, the character she portrays are both smart and sexy and I'm tired of seeing both given short shrift. Smallville and the CW are lucky to have found an actress who can pull off difficult scenes with ease and whose chemistry with her co-stars is so incredible it's a delight to to watch. It's time she is given the attention she deserves.

I didn't see the promo and don't ever want to. The thought of it makes me cringe. I know the CW is aimed at preteen girls but come on. The whole network doesn't have to be geared towards this group. Supernatural is wasted on this network. The acting is top rate and so is the writing.

I hate Bela and Ruby. Neither actress can act and it's embarrassing to watch especially when they are up against the extremely talented J2.

If the actors want more down time how about bringing in a couple of other male hunters? I think that dynamic would be interesting that shoehorning in these 2 girls. And it seems to me that would appeal more to preteen girls.

This show sucks anymore so who cares.

Smallville has been an ensemble cast from day one, with lots of regular weekly characters and lots of others being weaved in and out. It's not usual to focus on Supergirl, an important character in the story of Clark Kent. But the Supernatural we all fell in love with from day one was never an ensemble, it was simply about Sam & Dean, with ocassional guest stars -- never any "regulars".

This promo infuriates me because it gives the wrong impression to new viewers. I honestly wouldn't mind it so much IF we had gotten decent promos all along (such as the "Hells Bells" montage), proper promotion, and season 3 promo pics of the real stars of SN before any other promo pics that feature secondary characters who have yet to prove themselves or their place in the SN world.

I understand the marketing ploy here. CW is not trying to entice more females by showing RuBela... females are already watching for the real stars. CW is trying to entice that coveted demographic of hormonal 18-25 year old males by offering them eye candy. Kripke is simply doing his best to make RuBela fit in, trying to balance both sides (fans vs. The Powers That Be) very precariously.

So far both Ruby and Bela have been introduced in small doses. As long as they remain entirely secondary and well into the background, then they will be an annoyance that we could put up with if it helps with the ratings. But should they be pushed to center stage, then the fandom will campaign for them to go the way of the Roadhouse and Jo. Which will be too bad really because they are inherently interesting character creations, as long as they are used sparingly. Very, very sparingly!

In the part of "Supernatural" this promo was like a punch to the gut. Both girls were on screen five minutes maximum in their episodes, their performance was cringeworthy at best, and now they are introduced as hallmarks of the show? Do The CW really wants to promote "Supernatural" as the series with crappy acting and bad storylines?

The promo is extremely lame. Nothing here would convince me to watch the show if I didn't already. I've started liking Ruby more but they picked basically her stupidest line to use. I can't stand Bela and nothing shown here makes me feel any better about her. If anything, it makes me hate her even more. Supernatural needs more publicity but they're not going to get anywhere with things like this. They need to show more of the boys, you know the ones who have been working hard on this show for the past two years. All this promo tells me is that Dawn Ostroff likes to mess with perfectly good shows...but keep in mind this is the lady that thinks quality entertainment is the Pussycat Dolls.

Here is short ans sweet!

Its bull and needs to be yank off!

Thank You Sarah... thank you so much. Did we really need a promo when considering every promo pic we have seen have been of the "chicks". Where are my boys at ?????????? Where are the BOYS of Thursday night.... I now want hell I will go as far as to demand a promo "The Boys of Thursday" featuring: Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, JENSEN ACKLES AND JARED PADALECKI !!!!!!

I am insulted that Alison Mack wasnt apart of that promotion... if anything SHE should have been featured if not leading the promo !!!!! Then again look at who we are talking about... CW doesnt take care of those who have made them a name and forget they even exist.

I find it insulting to Jared and Jensen. There has been almost no promotion in Seasons 1 and 2 and now all the promotion for Season 3 has been about these new female characters. None of the viewers from Seasons 1 and 2 have been watching for them. We've been watching for the brothers. What has kept up watching is their relationship.

This promo gives a false impression of the show, what the show is about and WHO the stars of the show are.

I worry that it gives a very real impression of what the CW is trying to make it into, though. In which case it is going to lose them their present viewers, not attract more.

I think if half the money spent on this would have been spent to produce a promo which accurately conveyed the show, with the real lead actors, they'd have seen a ratings jump.

I just find this troubling and sad.

Since I stopped watching Smalville two years ago when it turned into The Lana Lang Hour, I cannot comment on Kara/Supergirl. However, the new promos for Supernatural are lame.

The show is about two BROTHERS fighting evil and avenging the deaths of their mother and girlfriend (in Sam's case). But all the CW has been doing this season is promoting these two girls and forgetting about the real reason fans watch the show - Dean and Sam (Jared and Jensen).

If Katie Cassidy could act, I might be more excited about Ruby, but she can't, so I just hope Dawn O. gets on the cluebus and dumps the character. Bela, so far has been interesting and Lauren can act, but can the character of Bela be believable for 12 episodes and not seemed forced down our throats or in eps? Don't think so.

The CW Network with these girls are pandering to the male demographic audience, 18-25 and forgetting their core audience that supported the show the first 2 years. I say, less T&A, more Sam and Dean.

Seriously, the show started out as two brothers and now its turned into a campaign, using pretty girls, to attempt to draw in a larger male audience. Here's a thought, how about promoting the "SHOW" and not just a few characters. This way, viewers can REALLY see what the show is about. Anyway, Bela and Ruby are just not a good fit. Season One and Season Two were fantastic without trying to add two other females just to hopefully "appeal" to and draw in more male viewers. If you want more viewers, show promos featuring the twists and turns of the main characters and their on-going drama. Just because new characters were added to the show does not mean they ARE the show. In all, I strongly dislike the new promo and hope to see the show's dramatic story-lines as it should be.

Thanks for calling out about this. I saw that link when I went to watch the director's cut for Bedtime Stories and I ran the other direction and didn't look back.

Let me say I'm not fond of the new characters period. Not because they're girls, but because I think they're unneeded - especially in the sheer volume of episodes they're in. Also the anvils of "these characters are IMPORTANT!" (when nothing has happened to justify that importance) hurt when they land on you so often.

Supernatural wasn't broken to begin with, and it certainly didn't need "fixed" in this manner.

It certainly doesn't need a network pushing it for non-central, new characters, as if the sun revolves around them. Sadly, that seems to be the case this season for Supernatural, and that's when said network gets around to advertising it at all.

Supernatural is so much more than these new characters (girls or not) - and it should be celebrated for the wonderful things it always has been. Sadly, I wonder if someone has lost sight of the truly intelligent show they have in it.

This makes Ruby and Bela look like the stars of Supernatural...that's SO wrong!

Ruby's character at least has a point...Bela is a waste of film. She's too "Mary Sue," like something out of those fanfics about "Winchester sisters."
She SHOT Sam for Christ's sake! Why would Dean EVER tolerate her after that? It's preposterous. Bela's pointless and needs to go before she starts ticking off viewers. Supernatural is in it's third year and has the potential to really shine, but every second "the girls of Thursday" take away from the brothers is a step in the wrong direction.
Like I said, I can take Ruby, but Bela must go soon!

Who CARES about the girls of Thursday night? I watch the shows for the GUYS. The sexing up of shows by adding girls in tight clothes and silly accents (and BAD--really bad--acting) is ridiculous. Both Supernatural and Smallville didn't need new characters. Smallville had enough of an ensemble, with both male and female characters who were sexy enough. Supernatural? It was about the Winchester brothers. Now the Winchesters feel extraneous to the story of Hunters vs. Demons that the show has turned into.

The girls of Thursday night? Should be banished to another night. Gossip Girl or Tyra Banks could probably use them. Better yet, salt and burn them. Permanently.

I liked having the BOYS of Thursday night. When they're back, I'll enjoy the CW exclusively. Until then, Survivor and Grey's Anatomy are looking pretty interesting...

What do I think? I HATE THE PROMO.

The CW doesn't do any promotion at all, no new banners (if I see one more freakin' gossip girl banner I will scream), no new promo pictures, no generic promo of the boys, AND the Supernatural site is being taken over by Smallville advertisements. We get zero cross-promotion. Except for this.

Everyone knows that Kripke planned on adding Ruby, and that Dawn Ostroff wanted a second female, so now we have Bela. They both suck, but Bela sucks more because she does not fit into the plot. So what, she's just gonna pop up and start trying to fight with them over artifacts? When we've spent two years being told that hunting was undercover, underground, you don't make any money . . . they changed the cannon of the show with Bela!

Bad move, Kripke and Dawn. Bad move.

Everyone needs to refocus a little bit. The show is not about US.

Every scene Sam and/or Dean are not in is a period of rest for Jensen and Jared. Do YOU work 15-16 hours a day, five days a week, doing physically and mentally draining work? If so, then you understand. If not, then maybe think about it a little bit.

Jensen did an interview with TV Guide this week, and stated he's always begging them for more guest stars, because it means they get a rest.

If the promo brings new viewers who stay for the quality writing and acting, then how *I* feel about the promo doesn't matter. It's not like the promo is going to stop me from watching the show.

Honestly, I am happy the show is evolving. I like Ruby and Bela. And I'll adapt to slightly less Sam and Dean. ESPECIALLY if the alternative is no Sam and Dean at all.

I kind of liked the promo, except for the fact that as always Chlos is in the background, I mean, she's the only female in this cast that has won something, and that cames from fans and they don't give importance to this??. Really :(

You want to know if it's turned off existing viewers? It sure has with me. I've completely stopped watching Supernatural because of Ruby and Bela. Like some of the above posters said, these girls are being shoehorned into the show and the brother interaction is practically non-existant because of them.

The reason I loved SPN was because of Sam and Dean and their lonely journey. And now that journey has gotten way too crowded for me.

Please, Eric Kripke and CW - rethink these girls and get this show back to the outstanding quality it used to be.

Long time viewer, turned off. If I wanted to watch people play smirky unpleasant sex games, I'd be watching the competition. I loved Supernatural because it was had much more going for it.

Very sad.

Thank you a million times. I was appalled when I saw that promo. Um...what about Jensen and Jared who have been working that butts off for 2 years? I doubt they really care but I honestly felt insulted for them. I know *I* felt insulted for myself, it was an insult to my taste and intelligence.

And in the case of Smallville...gee there have been women on that show for years, so hardly a new thing there. It's insulting to the girls who have been there all along.

Hi! i haven't comment here in awhile i really love the show its a real thriller..

this suggestion is for the writers of supernatural:

I think they should have a death note epsoide.. if not then oh well... i tried..

Death note is a manga/anime and its really creepy.. i think it would be really awesome if they put it in season. The whole storyline of this manga is that a shinigami(death god) drops a notebook in the human world and a high schooler light yagami picks it up and reads the instructions.. Inside it reads whoever writes the name of a person in this notebook without writing the specific time, date, and when he/she died. they will simply die of a heart attack. You have to know the face of your victim** and their name. You can't use a fake name or it won't work. Along with the death note(( you can look it up on google)), comes a shinigami, a protector or sidekick. Nobody can see the the death god besides you and you alone, unless you let the person touch your notebook. And if the person gives up the notebook he/she loses their memmory of ever using it.

Okay! well thats a description of the story. Eventually light((main character)) starts killing all these people to rid the world of evil, he becomes a god, and he has aquired** a name, Kira. He eventually dies at the end!

So if you think my suggestions corny sorry, but it was just a thought.

My favorite character in supernatural would have to be dean hes such a ladies man.

I believe that Inferi-tremen and Caroline have spoken for a lot of us. Supernatural was once a great, classy and very unique show about two brother. Now the stories are crowded and rushed, the brotherly moments are gone in favore of "girl" time and seriously this season is far from the genius that was once Supernatural.
Now, we get the same kind of show that's on every other station. And from the ratings, the girls didn't bring any new viewers in. Plus, KC really needs to take acting lessons. If her and LC are going to go against J2 they really both need acting lessons, cause right now, it's just two girls trying to play tough and not doing a good job of it.

And we won't even get to the disintergration of the dialogue. Cripes, what happened Kripke? Did you get blinded by your new shiny toys you lost your way?

Wow Ruby and Supergirl look kinda clone-like in this promo. Nice work CW.

I can't say i'm liking the promo when it comes to Supernatural. It does make it look cheesy & soapish, which any true fan knows is not the case. However I don't feel that we can blame Bela & Ruby for something the CW is doing. Both girls, as far as I'm concerned, are awsome & I think their characters are gonna be a real asset to the show. So far I'm LOVING the new season, every aspect of it, I just wish the CW would open their eyes & see what an awsome show it is & that it doesn't just bring in the 18 - 34 yr olds, cause HELLO!!!! I'm 36 & most of the fans I talk to & I talk to a lot are 35 & older.

I always heard Eric Kripke saying how awsome these new girls were goona be. So far the only one that seems to be working is Bela. She isn't being shoved down my throat, unlike Ruby who seems to be in the every episode up till the Nov. 1st episode.

There are too many shows on the networks that are about girl power. I am tired of strong ass kicking girls. If I wanted that I would watch Charmed, oh wait, that show ended. There's Heroes, which I do. So get over the girl power. Someone at the CW is a sexist. A female loving sexist.

Supernatural was *not* better before. It's better now that it's dialed back on the angst. The constant angst and tears get old and they blunt emotional impact. Every episode can't end with Dean and Sam in a room together being emo. Now, by introducing the plausible strain in their relationship and keeping them at odds emotionally, they're mixing up the formula a little. Season three has a sense of urgency and more purpose while season two stalled out in places. There will be emotional payoff when the deal is finally defeated and the shared moments between the brothers will be all the more gratifying--if your attention span is longer than five minutes.

As for the promo, yes it was stupid as hell. I couldn't get angry, though, because I was too busy laughing. It was probably Dawn Ostroff's idea. If I were trying to attract the teeny boppers who watch Top Model, I'd show Jared in that towel that was hanging obscenely low on his hipbone. Other than that, I like Ruby. She's stirring the pot, and I think Katie Cassidy's cute.

I love it. I'd personally love to see more promotion for Gossip Girl and the girls as well. Right now most of these shows have the teen market, we need a male market. The girls at SPN, Smallville are beautiful as well as the Gossip Girls. Get them out there!! :)

I don't blame The CW for coming up with this promo. The number one show on this network is still "America's Next Top Model" so it would be foolish not to try and drum up interst from that largely female audience by showing them that Thursday night is not a full on testosterone fest.

The Girl of Thursday Night is Chloe (Allison Mack) since seven years and we see her in background 2 secs. Why???

Supernatural is a class show with excellent acting from Jared and Jensen who made us believe in Sam and Dean. What attracted me to the show was it was different and it was about the brothers, their family, their relationship and their fight.

Kripke seems to have lost his way with his precious Ruby and Bela who have been shoved in the storyline and shoved down our throats incessantly. I don't care about them or their back stories. I want to see Dean and Sam working together not separate all the time!!

The girls don't fit and are lightweight, at best, in their acting skills (realy cringe worthy which is a shame and an insult to Jared and Jensen the other class actors that have created the story for us). Their characters both need to be salted and burned very quickly.

Let us have the class show back with great stories, great acting and great characters.

THANK-YOU!

Yes, a million times yes. I started to get worried when I saw the new 'Previously ...' in the season premiere - it made it look like Sam and Dean were a couple of playboys who shot ghosts as a sideline in between kisses.
So cheesy, so unrepresentative and, as you say, more like Smallville.
But Supernatural was better before, it was emotionally intelligent and the exploration of the brothers' relationship was WOW! so original.

I can't stand Bela or Ruby, I think they're dragging the show down by making it more rushed to fit them into story-lines, and more shallow therefore as there's no time for in-depth look at Sam and Dean working it out together. There are hardly any Dean and Sam scenes and those that are there are really brief and stilted.

I think it's good to have guest stars but grown-up interesting characters - not valley girls.
Why take something that was working as a genuine story and make it into a cheap soapy slasher just to get a few more viewers?
And according to the ratings - there aren't any more viewers from this 'new' look.
What a waste!
