Smallville: All Families Have Issues

We got to see a little bit more of Clark's Kryptonian family tree on Smallville, courtesy of a crazed government agent and a krypto-memory potion. On the one hand, we had Lara, Clark's birth mother: angelic, beatific, gorgeous and bathed in heavenly light. Possibly not the most realistic portrait of his mother, but hey, we're glad Clark finally got to see her.

Then there was Zor-El, Kara's father and Clark's uncle. He didn't come off quite so well. Poor Kara had been convinced that her dad was a hero with a spotless reputation, but that's not how her recovered memories played out. It seems Zor-El was controlling, obsessed with Lara, and he really did try to assassinate his brother. That's enough to make any family reunion somewhat awkward. Plus, we find out that he stole some of Lara's DNA, encased it (along with his own) in Kara's crystal, and sent that off to Earth with her. And oh yeah -- he also tampered with Kara's memories so she wouldn't know anything about it. Bummer.

Kara finds all this out on the search for her crystal, when (after working her feminine wiles on an unsuspecting lab tech and an even less suspecting Jimmy Olsen) she's captured by Agent Carter -- in Lex's manor. Carter is thrilled to have a real live alien to work on -- he's got all these Kryptonite toys he's been wanting to play with! Those toys include krypto-cuffs and the aforementioned memory serum, which drags out the story of Kara's first visit to earth.

It seems Kara had actually visited Earth once before -- she'd followed Lara through a portal to the Kent family barn, where Lara was checking out the homestead where her son would be raised. Apparently, there was a regular revolving door between Earth and Krypton, and Jor-El had picked out the Kents to raise their son. We're a little confused by all this -- seriously, was visiting Earth like going on safari for Kryptonians? And was the pink polo shirt and jeans standard Kryptonian garb, or was there some sort of costume shop on the other side of the portal? Weird.

Clark breaks in to rescue Kara -- thus exposing himself to both Carter and the Kryptonite that litters the room. We can't help but think that was a lousy plan - he had to realize that anyone who could restrain Kara would probably have a massive supply of the green rock - but hey, he was thinking on his feet. Thank goodness (or possibly badness) that Lionel was lurking around -- he shoots Carter, preserving Clark and Kara's secret - for now. We'll see how long it takes for the mysterious government program Starhawk to track the cousins down.

In other news, we find out that Lana has established a foundation to help the meteor-infected masses. Lana tells Chloe not to tell Clark -- so much for no secrets -- Chloe reluctantly agrees. We wonder if she'd have agreed if she saw the giant Lex surveillance room hidden in Lana's office? We're especially worried now that Clark is actually following through on his vow to keep no secrets from Lana - he even shows her Kara's crystal, which he managed to steal from Carter's lab. We have a feeling that wasn't a good idea....

What did you think? Were you as surprised as Kara to find out Zor-El wasn't who she thought he was? Does the Kara/Jimmy romance make you happy, or are you just worried about poor Chloe getting her heart stomped on yet again? What is Lana planning? And just how dangerous is this Starhawk program? Tell us what you think in the comments!

The show is really starting to get into the comic book realm. Is the manhunter "The Martian." Is Agent Carter "The Hawk" and where is the JLA from last season? If i'm not mistaken Clarks dog was originally from krypton and had all of his abilities. When is he gonna fly?????

Wow....judging from the storyline being told here...all I can say is.......what a GARBAGE of a show Smallville has become. SO GLAD I STOPPED WATCHING THIS CRAP.

just really great to see helen slater on the tube.

I love this show i like the suspense keep it up!
p.s. He needs to careful around Lana I got a feeling thats not the real Lana but the clone Lana that does not know it yet but will eventually find out when Lex comes for his clone.

The Kryptonian soap opera is so silly and the actor who played Zor-El went WAY over the top!

Love the Lex/Lionel scene. Did Lionel lose his hand because of Lana's torture? He seemed to be wearing a prosthetic.

I was mainly surprised that Clark never told Kara that he had the crystal. Clark would have typically just handed the crystal over, but apparently he has his own motives. It didn't surprise me that Zor-El was such a shady character. The Martian Manhunter knows what he's talking about.

I am still waiting to see the next epi, TW IS GREAT
The writer`s have spoiled Lana `s charecter and i think they are leading upto the demise of Lana permanently because KK has only signed up for 7 seasons. I hope Tw and Kk are great friends off screen and keep intouch with each other when the series ends.

Agent Carter and Project Starhawk - is there a connection to Hawkman from DC canon? One of his aliases is Carter Hall, after all.
