Supernatural Convention Update, Day Two
We're back at the Supernatural/Smallville/Buffy convention, and we're having a blast! Jared and Jensen took the stage, alone and together, and they were even more funny, affable and adorable than we expected. We'll have a more in-depth report later, but here are some highlights:
* Jared and Jensen really play off each other well -- it was great to watch them joke around. Jared broke into Jensen's session with a question from an anonymous source: "How do you respond to allegations that my character, Sam is better-looking, smarter, taller, younger and just better?" "You have to ride shotgun," Jensen shot back.
* When Jensen rejoined Jared onstage, and brought out another chair to sit in, his chair was taller. Hee!
* Master Sergeant Kevin Wise, a Special Forces soldier, presented the guys with a letter from General David Petraeus, commander of the Multi-National Force in Iraq, as well as honorary Special Forces coins from his unit. Supernatural is the most requested DVD among armed forces personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan! The guys were amazed and touched, and presented Wise with a shooting script, signed by the cast and crew.
* Jensen came back on stage wearing a Jared t-shirt. "I have never been more attracted to your torso, Jensen," Jared said.
* A fan tried to ask Jensen about Dean's necklace, and he cut her off -- "I don't know!" he said, mock-sorrowfully. Jensen wanted Dean to have stuff, he said, and before they shot the first episode, he and the costume designer just dumped out a box of all the stuff she's collected from previous shows, and they picked out stuff that looked cool. "Kripke said 'OK, we'll come up with a reason he has all those things,'" Jensen said. "He has not." The ring, however, he identified as Dean's beer-opening ring, so he didn't need to carry a bottle opener. Hee!
* Jared did a killer Jensen impression -- and then Jensen returned the favor when he got back on stage.
* They guys indulged the fans and started talking with their real Texas accents. Again, the crowd went wild.
* The scene in Tall Tales where Dean stuffed his face with caramels? Not CGI. Those really were Jensen's distended cheeks. It was his idea to stuff his face, and he regretted it -- all the sugar inthe caramels made his tongue start swelling and his cheeks go numb.
* Jared laughed so hard at fan questions and reactions, he occasionally had to wipe his eyes.
That's it for now. It was great seeing the guys, Samantha and Fredric, and it was even more fun meeting so many dedicated fans. We'll have lots more from the convention later on -- full reports on all the presentations, interviews with fans, news about fan videos, and more! Keep checking back!

I travelled to the convention from Australia and had a fantastic time, it truly was a treat to see Jensen and Jared in person interacting on the stage, sounding off one another, just awesome and totally hilarious! I always knew they were two terrific blokes and the Chicago convention just confirmed that.
I also loved the appearances by Samantha Ferris (Please bring back Ellen, she is one majorly cool character) and Frederic Lehne, both are very charming and affable people.
And Steve Carlson rocked, both during his concert and his stage appearance.
Mark Lutz was a pleasant surprise as I was unfamiliar with his work but seriously, the man could be a professional stand-up comedian, he was incredibly funny.
Supernatural is the ONLY television show that I watch so I hope it continues for many years to come. Thank you and congratulations to everyone involved in the production of this brilliant tv show, you guys do an amazing job!

I asked Jensen the first question about Tall Tales - it had been bugging me since the episode aired. I didn't expect such a funny, detailed response. :)
The guys were awesome, and I think I admire them more now. Most of their responses showed how they care deeply for each other and their families: Of any person, living or dead, that he could have dinner with, Jared chose one of his grandfathers because he never got to meet the man. Jensen was in awe of his dad during the filming of Devour and loves the song El Paso because it's a song that his dad loves so much and plays so often. Sam and Fred couldn't reiterate enough how so "unHollywood" the Js are, and how well they were raised.
I loved the format of them having solo panels, "crashing" each other's panel, and then one together.
Bryan, their handler from Creation, said the boys had a great time, so the chances are good that they'll be back next year. I'm already signed up!

It was an amazing weekend...thanks for covering this guys!

The con was great! Jensen and Jared were great fun!
Please fix Supernatural because it has got so bad it's painful to watch (except for Bedtime Stories) - don't leave the guys with substandard material PLEASE.
I found it interesting that neither the boys nor the audience mentioned RuBela. That subject was avoided entirely - not doubt to spare all the awkward silences that would follow.
Jared and Jensen deserve the show returning to the way it used to be - two brothers on the road fighting Urban Legends with a killer soundtrack and subdued lighting and WIT (instead of crudeness) without lame 'regulars' who can't act. Every single fan I talked to at the con said the same.
Perhaps the strike will make Kripke and/or The CW re-consider? Before it's too late ....

Hey, Mariel (and everyone else that's asking about video) -- as press, we weren't allowed to take pics or video of the stars while they were onstage. We DO have some fun video of fan interviews, as well as some other cool stuff, which we'll publish soon. I wish we had the accents on tape, though. The guys were hilarious.
Posted by: Jackie | November 13, 2007 4:30 PM
Is there a video to go with this? I would love to hear their real accents.

The convention was absolutely fabulous! Well put together and well put together. Out of all the fans that went one stands out in my mind. She was a very bouncy energenic red-head by the name of Yvette. Renniespice on the SN.TV board. This girl was absolutely hysterical and a bunch of us girls were delighted to meet her and watch her in action. The stars were even laughing and talking with her. Which made me love them more to see them so much like normal people. We would be standing with her and Fred or Sam would walk by and address her. We were jealous. She told us stories of her visit to Vancouver with the boys last spring and showed pics. It was nice to hear because we did not get as much action with them as we would have liked with their schedules. The people from Creation were even enamored by her. Steve even was goofing with her during his concert about her Vitamin Water which went into the next day during his Q&A. Those who were fortunate to be able to talk and hang with her got to see alot more than we would have if we never met her. Thank you everyone from Creation, Yvette, and of course the fabulous stars who were kind enough to turn out. I look forward to next year and already have my ticket.

Sarah, do you have any info on if the show will publicize this? Have there been any statements from Dawn or any other higher-ups congratulating the cast and crew? If Heroes or Lost or CSI were so honored it would be on Access Hollywood, CNN, etc. I have a feeling Supernatural will be ignored as usual and no one but the online fans will even hear about it.

I was the one who asked Jensen about his jewelry! I also asked if his ring was a spinner ring, and he said no.

Ugh, Sherry you make me weep. If you know anything about the boys, you know that Jared's personality is very outgoing and the boys give each other constant crap. The fact that you think that their brotherly ribbing is Jared having a "big ego" is ridiculous.
(and since when is it a sin to have one character as more intelligent {at least, book smart} than the other?)
Posted by: Siara | November 12, 2007 5:38 PM
Sherry, chill. Jared was just joking. No need to be rude. God.
I'm so proud of the boys. Most requested DVD among armed forces personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan, thats really big!

Thanks for all of the updates. As someone who was there, but not at all the panels, it's nice to hear about it after the fact.
It was great meeting you all, too! I hope the rest of your weekend was fantastic.
Posted by: Dana | November 12, 2007 11:22 AM
Sherry, it was definitely a joke. And don't worry -- Jensen got plenty of his own teasing in. Jared wasn't the only one making fun! Really, the guys were just having a great time up there.
We'll have some fun pics and video from fan interviews and more later this week, so keep checking back! And to those of you who we met at the con -- thanks for talking with us. We had a great time!
Posted by: Jackie | November 12, 2007 10:39 AM
Thank you so much for keeping us updated on the con. What an experience. With some luck we will have one here in Oz in the not too distant future.
The guys are so funny, I have been watching vids on the net. But I gotta say, what an absolute honour for the show as a whole to be the most requested show amongst the troops. Operation Winchester does an awsome job, well done everyone involved with that. Also, if the CW can't see now what an absolute treasure this show is, then they never will. What other show can say they have been honoured like that?
Posted by: Glyconut (Jo) | November 12, 2007 6:16 AM
Fix the show now, please.
With these two amazing actors, with such a great friendship it's heartbreaking to see how awful Supernatural is right now.
This new season sucks so much, get rid of the new female characters and stop killing the brothers relationship.
Kripke and CW should take a lesson from Tim Kring of Heroes.
He tried romance and crappy new characters, it didn't work and now he apologized and will bring his show to the old winning formula.

OMG, thank you so much for this. I really wish I could've come too but since I live in Europe that's kinda hard to achieve...heh

Thanks so much for posting - J2 are SO adorable; I wish I could have been there.
Posted by: immie_8 | November 12, 2007 12:35 AM
It's bad enough that they write Sam to be smarter than Dean but to say that in real life is a blow to Jensen I think. Don't worry Jensen I think better looking than Jared. Even if it was a joke it was uncalled for I think. Boy, that Jared hads a huge ego!
Posted by: Sherry | November 11, 2007 11:42 PM
lol Everytime someone introduced themselves to Jared, he would to them. "Hi, I'm ___" "HI, I'm Jared."
So when a fan went up, with a smirk on her face, she started with "Hi Pam, I'm Jared" His response right away was "HI Jared-" LOL He claimed he meant to do that...

I'm so thrilled to read about Supernatural being the most requested DVDs for troops overseas! I run Operation: Winchester, which sends care packages and copies of Supernatural DVDs to troops overseas (www.operationwinchester.com). We just launched Phase Two; there's more information here if you're interested: http://community.livejournal.com/promote_spn/18317.html

Aw. Jensen truly SUFFERS for his art, huh?
"Jared broke into Jensen's session with a question from an anonymous source: 'How do you respond to allegations that my character, Sam is better-looking, smarter, taller, younger and just better?' 'You have to ride shotgun," Jensen shot back.'"
Good one Jared, but I'd say Jensen FTW! And Jensen wearing the Jared t-shirt? LOL!!
We really have the best boys ever.
