Supernatural: Once Upon a Time...

Sam at a crossroadsAh, fairy tales. They seem like such benign little stories -- until you start looking at the originals, which were bloodier than anything Stephen King could ever come up with. That's why we were so happy to see that was doing a fairy tales episode.
Supernatural
So when we got that, plus a tense conversation -- and shocking ending -- between Sam and the Crossroads Demon... well, that pretty much made our night.

How cool is it that Sam is up on his fairy tales? We can just see him as a little kid, reading the originals (because no way would a man who gave his son a gun when he was afraid of the dark let his kids read the sanitized versions of bloody tales... ) as bedtime stories -- and then staying up all night, freaked out. That's the sort of thing that sticks with you! No wonder he had such a strong memory of the stories!

What did you think of the rationale behind the fairy-tale deaths? We have to admit, the mechanism of having a comatose spirit inflicting fairy-tale-style mayhem on a small town to tell her dad that her stepmom had poisoned her didn't necessarily make the most sense to us, but hey, well let that go. We just loved seeing those stories we read as kids played out to their bloody, seriously disturbing conclusions.

What was your favorite storyline? We loved all the little touches -- the surviving brother had hidden behind a pile of cinder blocks; the murderous old lady lived in a house with gingerbread trim; and young Callie did look exactly like Snow White. And hey, everyone looks small next to Sam, so if we squinted, we could insist that Callie was cared for by dwarves!

But even though it was the main plot, the fairy-tale deaths took a backseat to the big story this episode -- Sam meets the Crossroads Demon in an attempt to save Dean's soul, even though Dean doesn't seem to want saving. We were expecting Sam to get turned down... but we sure weren't expecting him to shoot her with the new Colt! That was completely unnecessary, and it makes us worry a bit about our boy. Is saving Dean going to be what turns Sam evil?

What did you think? Did the fairy-tale plot make you think happily-ever-after thoughts, or were you less than enthralled? Did the Crossroads Demon's death take you by surprise? What's Dean going to do when - or if - he finds out what Sam's up to? And is Sam slipping over to the Dark Side in his attempt to save Dean? Share your thoughts in the comments!

"Is it just me, or has Demon-killing suddenly become run-of-the-mill in this Season? "

To answer your question: hundreds of demons escaped from hell in AHBL2, therefore a war between hunters and demons is going on this season...

Ahh, an episode that finally felt like season one again! I've missed this feeling, terribly, I have to say. The boys together, working on the hunt, figuring it out, dealing with it. They were saving people and hunting things! All the while carrying forward the emotional ramifications of Dean's sacrifice to save Sam. Good stuff.

Did I mention that they did all this (for the most part) together? Just wanted to mention that part again.

And no new characters muddling the story or taking away screen time or splitting the boys up. I was so glad to get a week away from them, and just wish we could have more.

Great episode!

Now this was a classic Supernatural episode. I loved all the scenes between the boys and the "real life" interpretations of the fairy tales were very cool.

The only thing that I thought didn't work was the last scene between Sam and the Crossroads Demon. I thought both performances were flat and uninspired considering the magnitude of the scene. Perhaps they should have given Sandy a role in a less pivotal scene because her presence seemed to be a distraction to me as a viewer and to Jared, who was marvelous throughout the rest of the episode, but seemed to flatten right out in this scene.

Also I agree with the poster below who says the writers need to be more careful when writing Dean because he's suddenly being accused of being homophobic and mysogynistic.

Now I know Kripke desperately wants to make Sam as popular as Dean, but really, destroying your most beloved character, doesn't seem like the smartest way to go about it.

It only takes the loss of a handful of Nielsen viewers and this show is in serious trouble.

I really liked this episode because of the fairy tales it was just different and alot interesting and full of suspense. When the crossroad demon had said that her boss is someone bigger and something about how he will destoy the people and take over the world, that made me want to watch it even more . I have seen every episode in every season.

Personally I was really blown away by Sam killing off the Crossroads Demon. Having a major player in a series eliminated is always a stunner, but this was the Crossroads Demon! When Season 2 ended I was expecting her to be the Big Bad of this Season, but looks like the writers pulled one over our eyes again.

Is it just me, or has Demon-killing suddenly become run-of-the-mill in this Season? We had two major demons killed as well in "Sin City". Well, I guess after they killed off ol' Yellow Eyes, anything's possible -- even offing the Seven Sins and the Crossroads Demon. To me it's showing that as Season 3 progresses, nothing is as unstoppable as things were in the first two seasons, especially the demons. It's definitely a sign of Sam emerging whatever dark-side he brought back from the dead.

As for the Fairy Tale murders -- damn, those were cool. The promo totally clued me in on what to expect. When I saw the three overweight construction workers bickering about building tools I knew exactly what it was referencing. Although the plot of a ghost-puppet master re-enacting scenes from the bloody original Tales was a bit too complex, it paid off well. But I would really want this show to tone down the complexity of the things the brothers are facing. Take Episode 2, the one with the Changelings. They were abducting kids, assuming their forms, and draining their mothers' life essences. At least the mystery was solved without anything as convoluted as a comatose girl taking out her anger at the living world through fairy tales.

Now I can't wait for Episode 6. When I saw the promo I was suddenly brought back to the glory days of Season 1, when we had bad-asses like the Bloody Mary and the Hook Man. Fucking GHOST SHIP, man!

***

By the way, who played the Crossroads Demon in her final appearance? She was hot. Hehe.

I loved the figth in the car in the beginning with the boys. It was intense and it makes me wonder what brought it on. And Sam shooting the Crossroads Demon was crazy! So awesome and so unlike Sam. This episode was more like what we got in Season 1 and 2. I did not miss Bela and Ruby AT ALL.

I really enjoyed this show - just the boys; no extras in here to give them answers and tell them what to do - they were back to relying on themselves and their skills. Aside from the very realistic fairy tales - and I understand that they need some exposition to explain the old versions, but no way would only Sam know this stuff. And considering how anyone in their business would know folklore and such, the Grimm version would certainly be known by both of them.

The gay comment and people getting so upset makes me laugh: Dean has insulted just about everyone on this show: overweight people, cops, etc. and most especially women. He's always insulting Sam by attributing him with female characteristics and they are meant as insults. "Bitch" etc, but one little comment and calling him gay, and folks are up in arms. Dean is not and never has been PC...that's just the character.

I loved the final two scenes: Dean telling Sam to let him go, when he couldn't do that himself, very hypocritical and so very human and realistic. Only Dean should now by know that Sammy doesn't follow orders, so naturally he goes right out and tries to exactly what Dean told him not to do! Interesting conversation with the Crossroads demon, and I'm not at all surprised he killed her: afterall, she's a demon and one responsible for killing a lot of humans. Also, he couldn't take the chance that she might report back to her boss. Very shocking and effective ending.

I thought Dean was more 'interactive' in the last few shows, and at least he wasn't eating or chasing women in this one! Sam is becoming much more interesting after a whole year of angsting and crying pretty much. Jared is really showing his stuff this year and I'm loving it. I looking forward to see what Dean does and how the two interact as he goes through stages of his acceptance of his death sentence.

Sam didn't drop dead because he wasn't shooting her to get Dean out of the deal.

She already told him it wouldn't work, because someone else holds the contract, she was just the broker. So he shot her to kill her--the INTENT is what's important.

This one was fine, if a little boring, though the Crossroads Demon wasn't as menacing, or as memorable as the last two.

I hope the writers realize that having Dean call Sam 'gay' as if it's an insult has annoyed a lot of fans. Personally, I'm not one of them but they are treading a fine line with Dean this season, he's losing a lot of fans because of the increased crudity and bigotry he's been displaying.

There is a growing number of people who will not care if the demons finally do drag him off to hell, just check out the message boards...

Ok how can we bribe Cathryn to write more episodes???

I liked Sandy and Jared in that last scene. Sandy did a great job !!!!!

Jensen again though broke my heart with that last scene in the hospital with Dean and Sammy.... GAH JENSEN EVERYTIME!!!!!!!

Excellent episode this is what the show SHOULD BE!!!!! I propose a vote that only Robert, Ben and Cathryn write episode form now on.

What a wounderful idea combining the SPN boys and the orignal Grimm fairytales. The lines were funny. And I cant wait to see what heppens next!

I absolutely loved this episode - it almost made up for the 4 very sub-standard episodes of this season so far. I laughed, jumped out of my skin, and almost cried.
Far from Dean being a jerk in this one, we can see how much he is suffering inside while still trying to tough it out. He has no answers except to see the deal through and poor Sam is left trying to figure everything out on his own.
Jensen and Jared were so wonderful, and there was no RuBella! Score!
This felt like SPN used to, all about the brothers and the Urban Legend and there were enough (good) guest-stars that the boys must have had some down time.
Well done team, keep it up!

overall, I liked this episode and enjoyed the guys on the road alone. Although, because this episode was based on the Grimm Brother's fairytales, I wish the episode was darker (as the eps usually are) instead of bright. Think it would've given the episode a better creep factor. That's my only complaint - no biggie.

Does anyone think that the Demon who's got the bid for Dean's soul is "Meg"? After all, it is the one demon who completely has it out for Dean.

I must give praise to Jared this season, he's doing a fabulous job bringing a darkness to Sam in the right moments.

Galveston: good insight into dean's emotional state. I wholeheartedly agree.

Elusive: To help clarify the Dean's deal with the crossroad demon, Lola's righ: She didn't say if "anyone" tried to stop the deal then Sam would drop dead, she used the word "you" to Dean, therefore since Sam is the one trying to stop the deal (not dean), Sam can't drop dead - which would go against the deal.

The whole thing with Sam dropping dead if he tries to get out of the deal is a big ploth ole--he'd be dead from day one b/c he's been trying from the beginning to save Dean. So I don't get that, but whatever. It doesn't bother me that much.

Frankly I thought that Sandra McCoy was REALLY bad. Um, acting skills? I mean, she makes Kristin Kreuk of Smallville (and I love Smallville, just not Lana) look worthy of an Emmy. It was just bad. And did you notice how many times they cut the scene to switch perspectives? That kind of editing means that Sandy can only utter one or two words before she messes up (doesn't act well) and they have to cut. And I'm sorry, but I don't think she's attractice. At all. And I'm not just saying that because I'm psycho-jealous.

I thought it was a good episode. It wasn't my favourite... that was last week=p But it was good. I enjoyed the brother moments and there were certainly some funny moments.
I thought Dean was just fine... i don't see hwy people say he is losing his depth. he is much more like he was in the first season... not as emo as last season... but people were complaining about that too haha. They just can't make people happy!

Great show... the best show and we love them here!

Personally I loved this episode. It felt more like Season 1 Supernatural.
And I needed a Ruby/Bela break.

I liked the overall concept with the fairy tales. It was different.
The old lady was pretty creepy, as was the big bad wolf.

It was also interesting to find out that, the demons 'boss' is the one who's actually holding Dean's contract.
As for Sam shooting the demon. Didn't expect that either.

All in all, I was happy with this episode.

Hurrah Brother’s Grimm – read their stories when I can’t get to sleep – hey I was born on Friday 13th what do you expect?

I agree with Galveston’s comments about Dean’s character for this season – it is being written/played the way it should be. I don’t like it but what ‘ya gonna do. I’ve realized that the episodes I haven’t enjoyed as much this season were because the subject of saving Dean was part of the plot (not that I don’t want Dean saved) but because there is too much tension between the brothers about this and I don’t like to see them fight. You have to admit Dean was really pissed with Sam in the opening scene, justifiably so, tamper with the deal, Sam dies and Dean goes to hell for no reason. Now we have to go through the journey of finding out who the BOSS is that is holding Dean’s soul (Lucifer probably) and how to get it back and it won’t happen until the end of the season I should think – aaaaarrrgh – E.K. et al we love you but you really like TORTURING the fans.

Ciao, A.

LOL, Lola it's only newsworthy if you don't think an episode sucks. ;)

I didn't like it as much as last week's episode, but psycho granny still ruled as did the big bad wolf. It's so charming and gory. The best part of the episode, however, was the brothers and their strained yet loving relationship.

I'm so glad the writers aren't cheating and are allowing Dean to go through the nastiness, depression, and fear. Of course he's being unkind, distant, and not himself. He's in a slow panic about what's going to happen to him, as anyone would be who's facing eternal damnation. If that wouldn't mess with a person's demenaor, I don't know what would. To not have Dean go through what he's going through would be a copout in the extreme. I don't want them to rush back to wisecracking, full of bravado and I'll take care of Sam's emotional needs to the detriment of myself Dean. Dean's tired. He's got nothing left. The stress is killing him and I for one appreciate that he isn't bouncing back. I want them to continue what they're doing and tell the story. That moment when he walked away from Sam was powerful; forget teen dream Dean. They relied too much on Dean's charm and didn't concentrate enough on the stories. Now they're concentrating on the story and I like it. I like the growth in Sam, who's finally becoming fleshed out instead of just crying and not taking action. I like that Dean's allowed to not be nice because it's understandable. Dean can't take it anymore. That's what'll make the eventual triumph worth it. I'll be there, whether it's this spring or (God forbid, frigging greedy studios) next fall.

Remember the demon did say theres a BOSS who holds the deals so maybe thats why sam didnt "Drop Dead" when he shot her... and the fairy tales wherent bad it was kind of kool and funny.

And you people have to lay off i mean come on you guys are so mean and so obsaysed that you will pick on every little thing that comes out of there mouth cant you just watch the episode and be satisfied... you people are driving me NUTS..

Anyways all and all i like the episode great job keep it up :)
cant wait for "Bella or Ruby" to come back i really like them

This episode was lacking for me, which just plain out sucks, because SPN always manages to brighten me up and give me something to go through a tough week of school for. Well, not this week, and next week isn't looking so grand either.

As far as Sam knowing fairytales, that's fine but making it so Dean was clueless about Snow White was utterly ridiculous. Sam most likely wouldn't have been reading fairytales on his own. He'd either have had John reading to him, and Dean would have been right there, or Dean would have been reading them to him (or simply with him) when he was putting Sam to bed while John was off hunting or something.

Do they constantly have to have it be one or the other? Enough already. Jeez. I'd have liked that better if they'd allowed Dean to know the common versions and Sam to know the more obscure details of the brothers Grimm. I mean, Dean not being able to put together a red apple with Snow White was just too much for me. I know they like to paint him as a clueless moron but really. It was looking more and more like they were dealing with something concerning fairytales and they couldn't even let Dean piece together one of the most common ones? Splitting the difference would have also helped with the way the exposition comes across. This little formula of theirs is getting old.

Then there's the "gay" line. It was kinda cute and funny when they had the boys mistaken as a couple earlier in the series. The reactions were funny at first because it was puzzling and disturbing to them (except in Bugs when it didn't seem to bother Dean at all and he played it up to make Sam uncomfortable) because they're brothers. But now they're going too far with it. It's into derogatory territory. The line served no purpose for me last night. It didn't come across as funny and if I was gay I sure as hell have been offended. They need to let the gay jokes go now. Seriously. It's making Dean sound and look like a homophobic ass.

I can't say that I like what they're doing to Dean. He's losing his complexity and depth and is being replaced by a superficial jerk so much of the time that I no longer get the joy out of watching him that I used to. He used to be so compelling and now he's just a shell. And, yes, I know he's probably supposed to be detached and distant due to his impending doom but regardless of the reason, it's just not something I think I care to watch much longer. I keep hanging on hoping that they start moving past this portion of the mytharc and get me back to the Dean I fell in love with. If they drag this deal out until the end of the season and this is simply the Dean we have to accept, I really don't think I'll be around when the season closes.

Especially when I've got Tweedle Demon and Tweedle DumbBela to contend with as well. I fear there are just too many obstacles for me to get past this season.

Anyway, this episode finally gave us the boys and the boys alone. So that's a plus, even though the chemistry is still lacking as far as I'm concerned.

The gore has been there. The little old lady happily stabbing the guy was disturbing. The guy punching hell out of the older lady was disturbing.

We got Dean kicking in a door! That's always a plus.

Sandy is cute as a button but I really think she kinda sucked.

As for Sam not dropping dead at trying to end the deal, the Crossroads Demon was speaking to Dean when she said "you try to get out of the deal and Sam dies", or whatever. So I took it to mean that Dean can't have any part in trying to get out of it. There was no clear stipulation that Sam couldn't. And, since he didn't drop dead, then that must mean that assumption was correct on my part. If Dean has anything to do with it then Sam will die. But if he doesn't then Sam is in the clear.

First off I am diehard when it comes to SPN. The world stops for me on Thursday nights and phones go unanswered, etc...that said, this episode didn't make the list of favs for me. At least the Grimm tales aspect of it. Now the interaction between our boys was stellar as always, and the crossroads demon and her nasty half-truths was awesome but what the heck was up with the frogs? Did I miss a memo somewhere?

Seconds before Sammy blew away the CRD I whispered, "Kill 'er!" and then when he did my DH looked at me funny...lol. What?

And like the poll question asked; Sam tried to end the deal, shouldn't he have turned into "rotting meat" as she said would happen when she laid it out for Dean? Does that mean she was lying? Does that mean that there is actually a way out or at least no repercussions to trying to get out? And Speaking of repercussions...Sam annihilated the Cross Roads Demon! That's bound to piss someone off in the "underworld". Unlike the rest of the run around and cause mayhem demons she actually had a job and now it is vacant...urhg! so many questions and so little time!!!!!
