One Tree Hill Podcast: "Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace"

The episode started with the Scott brothers punching Dan, but the ending packed a much bigger punch -- some serious Naley reconciliation!

Haley and Nathan, seconds before their hot embrace!

We adore the Nathan/Haley scenes (they saved a rather slow episode!), debate the Dan/Jamie interactions, and are just not buying the Brooke-wants-a-baby storyline yet. Listen to the One Tree Hill podcast for "Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace!" We'll be back with another podcast from Season One later this week, so keep checking back -- and if you haven't already, click to subscribe to our podcast in iTunes!

I wasnt a big fan of the episode, but disagree about having Andy talk with Lucas. Sure, every person who was been a fan since the 1st season loved Keith, but Mark Schwahn decided to got this direction, and i think the character of Andy is a nice substitute for Keith-anyone is better then Dan, right?. Anyway, i'm glad to see Naley is back on track and i 100% agree with the podcasters about Lucas..damn he looked fine!

I really liked this episode, it does not always have to be packed with action for it to be cool. What I don't like, and call me cliche or whatever, is the fact that Lucas wants to be with Linds. I want him to be with Peyton!!!! We have been watching this series for what? 4 to 5 years? and it has always been Lucas and Peyton, or what the h... maybe Lucas and Brooke, if they want to pull a Dawson's Creek on us, but not Lindsey, it's not that I don't like her, it's just that she is not part of the 5.

Well I agree with you guys on saying that it was a slow episode this week but I think it was a nice change of pace instead of the kinda "in your face action" it's like in this episode we got to see what was on the character's minds, what they were really thinking and how they felt. I also agree with you guys on how that adoption worker was just plain bad, I just didn't like her. Sarah I'm with you on how I loved the fight scene in the beginning with the Scott's and Jackie I agree with you on how Jamie brings out Dan's good side. Oh and I finally got around to subscribing on Itunes. yay

I agree with y'all on this episode. I found it extremely slow paced and I would have liked to see more action. Even just a scene at the River court with the guys or something. It was very everyone sitting in rooms answering questions.

Peyton needs to find her strength from other seasons, cause this is not the girl we saw before in this show. She can survive a stalker, 2 moms passing away, her dad not around, a gunshot wound, but not a breakup with Luke?

Kuddos to Lucas for doing something by going to NY, but c'mon he waited a MONTH. And YAH for Lily and Keith in her dream.

I am not even going to start on the baby plot.

I love the Naley stuff. Finally they are working through their issues and talking about basketball and the tour!

Overall, thanks for your awesomeness guys I am a huge fan of your podcasts!

Hey, just wanted to clarify the whole Peyton/Max scene. The first shot we saw was from mid conversation. Later they show us how the conversation started: with him walking in and asking about the car etc & then asking about Lucas. The scene after was the continuation of the first scene. Yeah I know, I was also confused at first, but then put it together...lol.

Thanks for the podcasts. I listen every week even though I don't always post, & I agree that this episode was a bit slow. But, I enjoyed it at the same time because it explained a lot, as others have mentioned. I am definitely looking forward for a fast-paced good episode & hope that the next one will be it.

Interesting episode. Nathan and Haley were great!
Payton and Brooke's storylines are boring.
Lucas/Lily and Jamie/Chester were really sweet together.

Can't wait for the next episode, Nathan will play again... *happy*!

haha! you guys brought up the one person saying a word and the next person starting their next line with that same word... segways, and i LOVED THEM!!! my sister and i were txting eachother thruout the episode and the segways were something we BOTH brought up saying that we LOVED!!!!
it's kinda sad to me that yall didn't like them! :(
haha but that's typical as per yall's podcasts... i do like most of what yall dont like, and yall like some of what i dont, but i enjoy yalls podcasts none the less!!!
cant wait for more! (ps love the s1 podcasts!)
haha and i loved the "what about peyton?" rotfl!!!

First off i lv the podcasts you guys are doing on season one, it's really gud to hear what u think of the characters back then and how they hav changed. I was slightly dissapointed with the episode but still loved it! It was a bit slow and the words carrying over got slightly annoying after a while, but overall i enjoyed it. I disagree with you guys about the brooke adopting thing. I love brooke, and so may be slightly biased, and think she will make a great mum. it may be unrealistic for a 22 year old to adopt but i think it will be interesting to see her in the role of a mum. I also loved her 1 in a million speech! as well as her scenes with jamie which i think are sooooo cute. I do agree however that peyton needs to concentrate on her music and stop mopping about after lucas, she has so much more to give to the episodes and i think it's about time we saw it! obviously i loved the naley stuff and loved seeing nathan so open and honest it was really sweet. keep up the good work with the podcasts and can't wait for the nxt one

So i didnt love this episode but i didnt hate it and i think it needed to happen like we got to understand why nate didnt say anything about the nanny at first and the reason why brooke wants a baby and i get that you guys still see her as crazy sex loving brooke but the thing is that this past 4 years brooke has had to grow up so fast because of her compamy so she not really in the same place that the other people are in other then maybe haliy i cant say im in love with the story line but i get it and i think they need to give P a lil more backbone come on i feel bad for her i think she needs to keep her self busy with her music cuz thats when you see her true self come out and i love it but keep up the good work and leave brooke and mouth alone i love them and you can talk all the crap about lucas you what hes getting on my nevres

Sarah,

I just wanted to post this quote on what Hilarie had to say about Peyton in the upcoming episodes in an E!online interview. I think it goes along with what you were saying about how she should focus on other things besides Lucas:

"I think that Lucas is still such a purpose in her world that it would be good to get away from that for a little bit—so when she comes back to it, it still has its passion and it's important." Hilarie says, "As Peyton's heart is breaking, she's putting her energy and her love into something else that will be rewarding. And music is going to play a really big role in that. I really like that Peyton's got this record label. I think it's important to show young women entrepreneurship and that you can take pride in something other than who you are dating."

The editing in the Peyton/Max scenes was horrible. But what they were trying to do was keep Peyton's "old friend" a mystery in the first scene. They should have just shown the record store scene first since she did go there first in real time. Basically, the mystery angle they were going for fell flat.

Adding my explanation -- I'm not anti-Peyton, I'm anti one-note Peyton. I don't like it when they make her all about one thing -- the only purpose of her life is to pine for Lucas. She's much, much more than that -- she's talented and smart and a great friend and all the rest. While I wasn't thrilled about Max, I did like that he brought that up to her -- you know, maybe you're not here to be with Lucas, maybe you're here to change people's lives and build your OWN life.

I'm one of those people who firmly believes that if you really want to find the love of your life, first you make yourself a life you love. She has to be happy with and in herself, she needs to have her own purpose in life, besides just as on-again/off-again tragic love for Lucas. It's like what the shrink said to Naley -- you need your own interests, your own passions, to make your relationship vital.

Marin, in the podcast I did point out that at first I thought Peyton was talking to someone because I saw something. However, the editing must've been off on this one because when Max comes in later in the episode to speak to Peyton it's like they're seeing each other for the first time.

We aren't anti-Peyton, we aren't anti-anyone (heck, we even kind of like Dan sometimes) it's just that sometimes the things the characters do don't gel with us the way that maybe they gel with you. And that's ok!

Marin is right. You guys (well there's like two of you) that are so anti-Peyton. I wish there was more a balance. You all seem to dislike her.

For the last few podcasts, you guys weren't as harsh but you guys have definitely turned it up a notch and it kind of sucks.

I kind of wish you wouldn't even talk about your opinion of Peyton. Why don't you just talk about how much you love Nathan and Haley and all the other characters on your podcast. Oh wait, you already do.

If you guys were watching closer - you can see Max's boot in the first scene; Peyton's not talking to herself. If you are going to do these podcasts, you should be paying closer attention to the show. Especially when you are going to make a sarcastic comment about one of the characters. Seriously, you guys are so anti-Peyton it kills me! I've been listening to your podcasts hoping maybe it was because you haven't been watching the show for the last 5 seasons and didn't get the characters' evolution and would try to not be so blatantly negative.
Lindsey is not the friggin' comet for god's sake!!! He wrote the book BEFORE Lindsey left - she can't be the comet! Lindsey says "we can't be together" twice because she knows (like Brooke, Skills and Haley) he still loves Peyton. Jeez, leave Peyton alone!!
I liked Brooke's interview. The woman was really cold, but, Brooke's comments to her were good.
Yeah, NH were the only ones who made progress. The storylines all seem to be really stagnant this year.

Hi girls usually I never agree with you girls with the podcast even though I continue to listen to you guys lol i find you guys hilarious still but i do agree this episode sucks big time, but the rest of course I have to disagree like the whole Lucas calling Lindsey his comet or what ever. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Lucas started writing again because of Peyton? He was with Lindsey for 2 years and he could never write nothing but Peytons back in his life and he's writing again. What ever Lucas you will learn

I do agree about Peyton just moving on. I mean she can still keep Lucas in her heart but if hes not willing to man up then why should she put herself through that? She's a bigger person then me all episode long she talked about his happiness. What about yours Peyton? Dont you deserve to be happy too even if its not with Lucas? I do disagree that LP are more then high school love especially with how the show has established their love for each other. I dont know I just think the moment Lucas realizes his feelings for Peyton more like him admitting his love for her it will be to late and Peyton's probably moved on.

NH were I dont know I rather see them talk then them make out. I love them but I just did not feel the love at all and I'm talking about the actors not the characters. I just liked seeing Nathan be vulnerable and Haley listen and not be so judgemental. Honestly I prefer S1 Haley over this Haley I see who judges people and does not take things into consideration.

Brooke's baby stuff blah I'm 23 and hates kids but wants kids just not right now. I still sort of see The Brooke from S1 that used sex as some sort of comfort but this time its her wanting a baby.

Over all the episode sucked monkey balls and i hope next week the episode makes it fun so you guys can at least make me laugh even when you diss my favorite characters. Yes I might be the only Lucas Scott fan that watches OTH and I will always love Peyton even with her whinnyness because Hilarie Burtons the best thing about this show for me.

PS: Whats with the Peyton hate? Because if you loved Peyton you'd rather see her draw then have her in the sucky boring storyline that is her musical scene. remember watching Places you have come to fear the most? Remember the speech she gave Lucas about her art? Yeah if you ever meet Mark could you kindly tell him we rather see her draw or sketch then be a record producer.

I agree. This episode was odd. Maybe kind of mellow since they just got back from the strike and they were rushing to get some of the details set in place? I dont know. The Naley shrink segments were great though. So happy that they are together again. And she was so dead on with their relationship analysis. They are only 22 years old, regardless of being married for 6 yrs. They are still YOUNG so go Live your life. LOVED the scene where Nathan was vulnerable and explained how he fell in love with Haley for the first time. He's changed so much and for the better. Perfect ending for them in the end of the episode.

I was just as confused as you about Dan getting slugged. Um... why? Did he not save Jaime? He even said thank you grandpa after he was being taken away so I dont get why they would beat him down like that u know? I hope they explain cause that scene was pointless.

And I cant believe that you girls didnt like the whole word connections! I actually really liked it. I found it interesting how even though they all are in a different part of their life with different experiences, they still will always have a connection in some way. I thought it was a nice way to tie all the characters together in some way u know? I dont know, call me analytical but I tend to analyze beyond the surface of this show rather than just take it as what I see and I think if you were to do that, you might appreciate the show a little bit more. Especially once you tie Season 1 to this current season.

I think Peyton is *trying* to move on but Lucas is still holding her back. Look at how she keeps having flashbacks of Lucas. Like in Season 1 where she almost ran him over.

I agree about the whole adoption agent. EXTREMELY unrealistic. I get that she gets the info from the mother but Still. No one would ask those type of questions to her. However I did love the One in a Million speech. But I do think that Brooke will be getting the kid just for that speech.

I hope next week is better than this episode. I just found it weird that they would put this episode at such a slow pace compared to every other exciting episode this season. Hopefully the whole strike issue of jumping back into this season is not an excuse for the episodes from here on out to be slow and less exciting u know?

We still dont know what happened to Deb or Whitey or why Karen left and sold her cafe and just so many things! why dont they make episodes about explanations? THAT is what is interesting. Not about a shrink therapy for every character.

Oh well good job on the podcast. Thank you for making sure the volumes were all in the same range!! :)

This episode kind of blew. I have this theory about TV that has yet to fail me- the "returning episode" after a big episode (except for season premiers) always sucks. It's like they've exhausted everything that they were trying to say and it's the interim between what has happened and what is going to happen.

The thing with the words carrying over, usually I love that to death (and I've had tons of people complain about that to me before), but doing it for an hour really started to get on my nerves. Used and abused.

Sarah - I agree with you absolutely completely about what you said about Brooke's speech. I'm glad she was able to say that and I liked what she said, but if she ends up getting a kid because of that (which it looks like is happening), I will be throwing things at my TV. And, to be honest, Jamie is enough child for a show like this. And if Lily is maybe going to show up a few times, that's plenty. No one else!

What redeemed the episode for me, I have to say, was Max! It's so eerie seeing Mark Schawn as Max talk to Peyton, his character. Love it! Second favorite thing, Nathan's scar on his chest from the race car accident.

I agree with you guys on a lot of things, like naley being the best part of the episode ,finding Andy and Lucas a little boring, and other things I can't think of right now. LOL

But there are two things I disagree about:

1.I have to say that I LOVED the episode. But I think that is because I know there back rounds from watching previous episodes and it reminded me of those great episodes and let me know the characters we I am so attached to better. Saying that, I agree that if I hadn't watched previous seasons I would be SOOOO bored. Or if I wasn't so attached to the characters. If I liked OTH but I like the storylines better than the actual characters.

2.Brooke having a baby. It is unrealistic, and at first I wasn't sure but her last line to the adoption lady was amazing. I LOVE were they are taking Brooke with the storyline and leaving the unrealistic part out of out(yes, a little hard but possible) i think Brooke would make a GREAT mom.

Hello!

I am 22 years old. If I was married, I wouldn't mind having a baby right now. But I don't think I would just go out and adopt one. But then again, I am in college and trying to pay for that :( lol. Anyway, I don't like that story either.

But I do find it interesting that Brooke's only reaction about the boys in her life was for Lucas. She immediately went on the defensive and asked what Lucas Scott had to do with her decision to start a family. I find it interesting that Brooke seemed unsettled by the "Lucas almost get married, and you look for love somewhere else."

I thought that Nathan and Lucas punched Dan because of Keith. Ya, it was years ago, but when Lucas saw him as the HERO, it had to have brought some rage out.

Nathan and Haley were my favorite this episode! I don't think I need to elaborate on that.

Peyton... oh my God... if I hear her whine about Lucas and how she wanted him to be happy... WITH HER... again, I will gouge my eardrum! GET OVER IT! It's been 4 freakin' years! And he clearly isn't interested? Why do that to yourself!

Of course I never liked Lucas and Peyton anyway because whenever they got together, someone (particularly Brooke) always was hurt.

I'm glad Lucas finally went after Lindsey! And I love the "long hours, late nights, fights. it will be like we're married" speech because Lindsey said that to him the first time they met about publishing his first book. And I love how he made her out to be the comet.

This episode was very insightful, but at the same time, very slow. I was expecting some action.

Hey, I just love listening to your podcasts! They are so funny and it is really interesting to see how other people felt about the episodes. I am one of the people who really liked this episode, maybe because I tapped it and did not have to wait for commercials, that really helps when watching One Tree Hill. Well of course Naley was the best part, and my favorite couple, I loved the idea of the therapist and them getting all their emotions out. I think this couple really needed to do this otherwise the reconciliation would have been to fast and people would have complained that it was really unrealistic. I was really against the Brooke story line in the beginning but now it is not so bad. Granted this is really far fetched but I think Mark never knows how many seasons he will get so if he has an idea he goes with it. Trust me I was really mad when Haley got pregnant in season 4, it felt too much like history repeating itself, but now I can’t see it any other way. I think Mark really screwed himself with Lucas this episode. All season he is trying to make this climatic Leyton yearning so that they will eventually end up together and then when Lucas is finally free, he decides to go after Lindsay. What!! This is why people don’t like Lucas and Peyton together so much gets in the way and you give up on them. For me, I really liked that everyone talked about their feelings, because you really never know what the characters are thinking. Of course through actions you can guess, but with Peyton I didn’t really think she wanted Lucas that much until she said it this episode. Also I did not think Lucas wanted Lindsay that much either, until he went after her, so in a way this episode really established everyone’s goals and feelings for what’s to come. One last note, I love that you guys are watching season one, and podcasting about it, I have not got a chance to reply yet but I love it!!! Don’t worry if Mark is true to form One Tree Hill will definitely pick up, he is really good with cliff hangers.

I so agreed with this podcast, this episode was so boring and nothing really happened, we just heard a whole bunch of complaining and how does that make you feel kind of crap.

I agree with Mia, not that I actually go to therapy but I rather go to my own therapy session than sit in on one because Naley's was boring although it was cute in a way. They should probably have group therapy with all the characters because they all have issues.

Brooke storyline is great but I agree it is not believable, I mean when I hit the age of 22 I don't want any kids at all, I already have a kid sister and she like to much work and wants to much attention so I don't know how that's going to work for her. But I can get where she wants a baby and everything but she is so young and it's kind of weird but she's still my favorite character.

Great Podcast can't wait for more! You all rock!

Totally agree, the episode had nothing really worth paying attention to except for Nathan and Haley and even then sometimes it wasn't that attention grabbing.
Brooke storyline needs to end. I love Brooke and I really don't want to see this for her. If she wants to start a family, she should find the right guy and start one there ... don't just snap your fingers and have one. I really hope they scrap that idea.
I too really like Lindsey and though I think Lucas and Peyton should end up together, if it takes Lucas saying he's gonna wait for Lindsey for her to be in episodes than okay. I don't remember which one of you said it but one of you thought of something I really didn't think of ... how Lucas was making Lindsey his comet. I'm a sucker for the romantic junk so I gushed a little when Lucas made the speech not really making that connection. But I still don't know about Lucas ... he's said that whole waiting for someone thing before and that didn't work out. We'll see.
Another thing I gushed at was Nathans speech about being vulnerable. I don't know if you've reached "With Arms Outstretched" yet on your adventure through season one but that "nothing else matters" scene is my absolute favorite and that vulnerable speech totally reminded me of the other scene and I gushed. And Nathan and Haley at the end were great. Maybe we'll get to see them take the advice of the therapist and swim naked in the pool.
Peyton was being Peyton so .. yeah. Mark Schwann was okay in that episode. I've seen worse. Jamie as always was perfect. Dan is creepy and I don't know how you ladies didn't think he was. I don't care if its the boys grandfather or even if was Nathan, it's creepy for someone to be talking to a little kid through a fence in the corner of the playground. I think Dan is just so much scarier this season than any other season.
Anyway .. until next podcast.

Brooke wanting a baby is the only GOOD storyline right now on the show. I love it and I understand her. Can't wait to see Brooke as a mom. She'll be amazing!!

Yeah, I think you definitely see on this episode, that there was a writer strike. I have never seen a "OTH"-episode, which was so bad like this one. Sorry, I love the show, but this episode isn't a good one.
And that Mark Schwahn needed to return as Max to have someone that Peyton can speak to says it all.
I agree with you ladies how you see the episode. But I wished you would give Lucas a little bit more critic. I think this guy is unbelievable. First off, he waits four weeks to really speak to Lindsey, but wants her back??? That doesn't makes any sense at all. And that he didn't even think for one second about the reason Lindsey gave him on the altar shows how NOT Lucas like this is. Not the Lucas we used to know.
The Brooke storyline ... I hate it!!! I hate it, I hate it, I hate it!!! What wants she with a child anyway. God, SHE IS 22 - and has in some way a great place in Jamie's life. Don't get it.
And in this end ... Naley ... the only thing what worked in this episode. Loved their scenes. Great stuff.
The rest ... I'm a little bit disappointed.

Ladies please...if you have any problems with the episode just let me know before you do the podcast because I'll fix them for you. I have two words for you...writers...strike. That's why it was such a dialog heavy episode with not allot of different locations. My guess is they wrote and filmed it that way because they had to write and film 6 episodes in record time. I bet that episode only took 4 days to shoot.
I love what we found out in that episode. I now understand Nathan and the whole nanny thing. Brooke wanting a baby doesn't seem so far fetched anymore. I loved this episode. It was probably one of my favorites of the season.
I loved the podcast and thank you for giving us one tree hill fans your thoughts on season 1.
