Smallville: Welcome to the Dark Side

Smallville came back with a bang -- or rather, a sickening thud. When they start the episode off with a murder and things get even more tense from there, you know you've got a good hour of TV!

Poor Lionel -- he could be evil, he could be scheming, he could be completely crazy, but we have to admit we kind of loved him. Yeah, yeah, he destroyed his son's life and may or may not have been bent on taking over the world, but he was always interesting. We have to appreciate him for that. Rest in peace, Lionel!

Lex and Clark

Of course, the manner of his death was pretty nasty: tossed out of a skyscraper by his own son! That had to hurt, both on a literal and a metaphorical level.

But Lionel had the last laugh -- for a while, anyway.

Lex killed him to get at his locket, but that locket didn't hold the key Lex thought it did. Lionel had already dropped that off in Chloe's desk. Lex figured it out before too long, and he found the key and fired Chloe. But his problems weren't over yet... Lois and Jimmy had a blurry shot of the moment of Lionel's death -- and they could see that someone else was in the picture! They'll need some heavy-duty computer equipment to enlarge the image, so they send it over to the Isis Foundation.

One problem: Lex's henchwoman Gina was cleaning up Chloe's desk, and she intercepted the message. She waylays Lois and Jimmy, locking them in the Daily Planet's cavernous freezer. Then she heads to Isis to erase the copy. She knocks Chloe out, but before she can escape, Clark comes in. Gina hides and witness Clark's superpowers. Doh!

But when Gina calls Lex with the news that she's found the Traveler, someone jumps her. A mysterious man sprays something -- poison? A paralysis agent? -- in her mouth, and she's helpless. We're guessing this henchwoman won't be helping Lex out much from now on. This whole situation sort of frustrates us -- why won't people learn to lead with the big information? If it were us, we'd start the message with "Clark Kent is the Traveler, more details when I get back." Come on -- think ahead, fictional characters!

Of course, Lex is a little distracted. His inner child is haranguing him, chastising him for killing Lionel and urging him to turn to Clark for help. You can still be good, young Lex tells him. Stay away from the box with the secret and turn your life around! Finally, Lex has had enough -- he grabs his inner child, drags him downstairs, and thrusts him into the fire. We're impressed that he was able to get his hands on a hallucination! Now it looks like Lex has gotten rid of that one last spark of goodness and decency. Bring on the unrepentant evil!

I was really shocked that Lex killed Lionel. I thought it was a dream or maybe it was Brainiac pretending to be Lionel again. I was hoping Chloe would use her powers to heal Lionel, but I guess it was time for him to go. Good or Bad, John Glover will definitely be missed on the show. What's up with the 33.1 project? Need more supervillains helping Lex to shake things up in Smallville. Can't wait to see how the season ends. Maybe Justice League & Martian Manhunter can help Clark if Lex gains control over him. Guess we'll have to wait & see!

hey guys! i tried commenting be4, but nothing went through.
i loved the episode last week. i can't wait for "sleeper." to go back to last weeks episode...it was just awesome how lex had faced his good-half for the final time. it was sad epic dramatic amazing and everything inbetween.
i am so glad smallville is back on.
i wonder how it will pan out by the end of the season.
i wonder what's going on with the martian man hunter? i wonder if kara's father will be back...and kalel's (i hope i spelled that right) real life mother.
see ya guys!

WOO HOOOO!!! what a ride, what a ride! excellent episode. i had an inkling it was lionel's "turn." i hope john glover reappears in other episodes, more in the fashion of how dumbledore reappears in HP's 'deathly hallows'. john glover is an excellent actor -- i sure hope the writers find a way to continue using his artistic skill in Season 7, even if it is on a very limited basis.

MR -- well what can i say. yikes! that man is too sexy for his own good and he plays a character whose reputation precedes him. MR is doing such an excellent job of luthor's descent into evildom. wow. takes my breath away. am i going to miss MR after S7? you bet! tho, i'm glad he's agreed to make limited appearances on S8.

i'm tuning in next week!

Lex already have the keys donise. And i agree with you max even though lionel did some horrible things he protected clark as always.

Marie u r completely wrong. Lionel was a hero because he died protecting Clark's secret. Who cares if he did some bad things in the past? He cared for Clark as his own son and knew that he had to keep Clark's secret away from his evil son, Lex. For the record, Lionel IS A HERO!!

MISS THE FIRST LADY ALREADY

While John Glover will be greatly missed, it was time for Lionel to go.

I was having a hard time believing that he was any sort of good guy...not after six seasons of him being evil incarnate. I don't like how the show glossed over those facts.

While I truly believed that Lex needed to kill his father in order to complete his descent, I hate that the show tried to show Lionel as a hero. Lionel Luthor was not a hero (or even a decent human being) and I hate that the writers tried to make us believe he was.

Last nights episode was good i can't believe lionels dead we r gonna miss him. lex is bad and clark must find the two keys before lex opens the box. Oh my god.
