OTH Recap: Hate is Safer Than Love
WOW! This week's episode of One Tree Hill was full of highs and lows. The opening sequence (much like the one for Every Night is Another Story from season 1 - aren't you all glad I know this now?) was a bit confusing but set us up for a wild episode. Let's get to the good stuff!
Peyton is woken up by a telephone call from the hospital alerting Brooke that it's time for Angie's emergency surgery. We are so happy to see what a great friend she is to Brooke. She takes her to the hospital and stays with her - only leaving when Brooke tells her to...now that Lucas has gotten there.
Meanwhile, Nathan wakes Jamie up to go for a run (Jamie sleeping in his Raven's uniform was utterly adorable) and when they get back Jamie finds his thank you note to Dan in the garbage can. OY! We knew it had to be coming, we just didn't know it would break our hearts just as much as it broke Jamie's. This prompts him to leave the house all by himself while Nathan is distracted by Deb showing her goods to a mystery web cam man. Deb, what's going on with you? First the clown, now you're a Cougar Gone Wild?
Haley is having some issues regarding family versus career: can she really have it all? Mia makes a surprise appearance at the recording studio and talks about her tales from the road - making Haley feel like this may not be the right path to walk down after all. Luckily, she leaves the studio in time to catch Jamie walking down the street all by himself. Their bonding moment at the park was heartwarming and we're glad she told him why she did what she did.
Back at the hospital Lucas is comforting a very emotional Brooke when she says she never told Angie she loves her. He says, "Most of the time, love doesn't really need words, ya know?" Interesting words coming from a writer! She tries to comfort him with the Lindsey situation, telling him that she'll call when she's ready - and oh boy does she. Dr. Hottie McHotstuff comes out and tells Brooke that the surgery went well - Angie is going to be ok. Thank goodness! We couldn't bear it if anything bad happened to her.
Angie isn't the only patient at the hospital that day - Dan is getting his checkup and learns that there is one person on the heart transplant recipient list in front of him. We're thinking that person won't be around for very long now that Dan doesn't have much reason to be nice these days. It doesn't even matter that the man is a reverend, he's probably about to meet the devil very soon.
The Ravens have their big game that night and Mouth gets another big shot at sportscasting. Q is set to give all the assists he can handle while the other players shoot as many 3-pointers as possible. At the half, the Ravens are up and things are looking good. Lucas goes back to his office at halftime and gets a phone call - the phone call - from Lindsey. When the game starts back up, Lucas is visibly disturbed and yells at his players. Skills and Nathan don't know how to control him and once a player from the opposite team really gets under his skin, Lucas goes after him and is ejected from the game. Later we find out that Lindsey has told him that she is now seeing someone else. The harlot!
Mouth sacrifices his job integrity by destroying the footage of Lucas attacking the opposing player. Haley lets Jamie give Grandpa Dan the card he made for him. Deb goes to meet her online boy toy and finds out it's Skills! We're not sure where this could possibly lead - except to the bedroom - which is exactly where they went! We can't believe how quickly Skills ripped off Deb's blouse - we didn't even have time to scream, "EWWWWWWWWWWWWW!"
On the other end of the bar, Lucas drowns his sorrows at the bottom of a bottle. Later, Peyton finds him passed out and takes him back to her place to take care of him. Did we miss the part where she throws him on the bed like the previews showed us? We get how all of that happened, but we were kind of expecting to at least see that part. As he is semi-coherent and Peyton is on her way out the door, Lucas tells Peyton that he hates her and wishes she never came back. Was this because she made Lindsey uncomfortable? Or was this because Lucas obviously wasn't over her and it came through in his writing? Either way, I'm sure we'll find out!

Brooke & Lucas definitely!!! Even though in real life they are not together, on-screen the chemistry is still amazing. I think Jake needs to come back for Peyton or have her move on. When her & Lucas are on the screen together, it's just blah!

omg ilove diz freakkin show n i just started wathing it now it sucks but no doubt dat imm goin bac 2 all the other seasons im alll day 4 lucas n peyton they both love each other dat whole i hate u thing really means that he hates dat he loves her so much n dat he cant get over her ya should already noe dat lindsay needs 2 get a fuc11n life .. n brooke needs 2 get wit dat guy dat came wit her ex 2 da party hes cute 4 her n omg lucas is sexy iz helll i love him he will b calling peyton he better not marry her in no las vegas he better do it by church n if he dont welll there is still more episodes 2 come i already saw the ending of the next episode on 5/19/08 dat chit is crazyyyyyyy

wow, great episode.
brucas- totally meant to be together, mark has showed it in the past few episodes. i thought lucas and peyton were meant to be, but clearly they aren't and you can tell.
peyton- needs to move on. hopefully someone great comes back into her life. it would be great if that someone was jake. lucas and peyton seemed to be in love through out most of the seasons, but now i realized its jeyton instead of leyton.
naley- need more naley scenes, some cute ones :) i love them always and forever. and with jamie, it just makes the perfect family in the entire world. jamie and nathans working out scenes were adorable, and same with jamie and haleys scene at the park. too cute.
brooke- she is amazing. everything she is going through, is for angie. she has such a greaat heart, and lucas was right about her "Brooke Davis is going to change the world someday. I'm not sure she even knows it." i wish and hope and dream for lucas to be together, but i have a feeling it wont happen. love triangles are so season 1/3. haha. unless peyton completely gets over lucas and tells brooke to go for it. maybe all this will happen next season. <3
deb and skillz- too funny. brings laughter to the episode.
dan- i dont feel the slightest bit of pity for him. dan has been such a bad man with a bad heart since the very begining, and all it did was increase. people may think he changed, especially in seasons 4 and 5. but i dont think so, he is still the same rude careless selfish murderer. i think everyone should back away from him, he looks like he is going on another murder streak.
lindsey- i don't think she is telling the truth when she tells lucas she is seeing someone else. i think she just wants him to get over her, which i think might happen pretty quickly.
dr ethan- very hot, great job, pefect for brooke. but i dont think it's gunna happen. maybe a friendly bond will start, but nothing more.
tonights episode seems interesting, and i think lucas is going to take brooke to las vegas and maybe brucas will finally be re-uinited. i cant wait!! 10 more hours :)

I'm sorry but I can't read how people want Leyton to happen next episode. I mean he told her he hated her so going after him or letting him all the way in, would be pathetic. Also it would be pathetic if he realizes suddenly that he loves Peyton, I mean come on, how stupid can they make Lucas? Lucas is an ass and he doesn't deserve any of them.
As for the rest of the episode:
D/S - ewww, what the heck was that? just wrong
Mouth - no overdose, yay!g
B/E - oh please another new guy for B? Oh come on Mark! He is cute although too perfect but stop with the guys for Brooke, you can't show us Brooke with another gut because Lucas will always be her biggest love.
Jamie - cute and cute. Especially with Nate.
Dan - God, why can't he change?
HP - haha, they were great, especially on the roof!
Lindsey - she called because she wants him to move on but I'm curious if she told him the truth, you know? Like maybe she thought that only if she tells him she moved on to another gut, he'll move on?

I hate how they throw random guys at Brooke, ie: Felix, Nick, Chase, Owen, and now the Doc? I really hope nothing comes of this doctor, that we never have to see him again. There is a reason why Brooke's relationship with these random guys has never worked out, they aren't Lucas. Brooke has only ever fully loved Lucas, he still has her heart. Honestly if the show doesn't end Brucas, I want Brooke to be alone. Because I know that she will never love any other guy the way she loves/loved Lucas.
I LOVE how Brooke and Lucas are there for each other no matter what. And to whoever said below that it was Peyton that was their for Lucas through Keith's shooting, that is crap, and you know it. Brooke was the one by Lucas' side the entire time, the one that pulled him out of the dark place. Go back and watch 3.17 and 3.18! Brooke and Lucas have always been there for each other through that good times and the bad and it all started in s1 with the pregnancy scare and Lucas told Brooke "I'll be there always." Through their greatest times of their lives to the worst/darkest they are each other's rock. I think Lucas going back to the hospital after he was kicked out of the game proved that more than anything. And if he was allowed to stay, he would have stayed the whole night with Brooke and talked to her about everything, instead of going off and getting drunk. I love watching their friendship in these past 4 episodes, and I really hope that it continues into s6 and that LL and LP eventually get closure and that leads way for something more with BL.
As for the "I hate you" yeah I can't stand Peyton and I felt bad for her. Do I really think Luke hates her, no but I think he believes he does, so in that respect he meant what he said. He said it with such conviction, that I (who knew it was coming) was shocked! Can't wait to see what comes of this. Honestly Peyton really needs to move on. And even if I wasn't a Brucas fan I would still say that. It has been pretty sad up to this point, but if she still is chasing after him after he said IHY then that is just pathetic. It is showing us that a woman needs a man to survive, and well that just isn't true. Hopefully with OR being canceled they are able to get BG back for next season, and Jake can come in help Peyton. I miss my Jeyton!
Skills and Deb, haha good for a laugh.
Mouth, I was happy that we didn't get an over dose of him this week, and I thought what he did for Lucas was great. Dumb but I probably would have done the same thing.
Umm Jamie w/ his parents, is too cute. NJ working out, adorable. HJ on the merri-go-round priceless.
But we need more NALEY!
Loved having Kate back, shes awesome.
Feel really bad for Lucas, like really really bad for him. Grabbing that kid was really wrong, but I still feel so bad. Favorite line of the night "most of the time love doesn't really need words." LOVED that, so you don't need to write two freaking books about someone to show them that you love them! They can feel in when they are in your arms!
Next week looks really good. Can't wait to see what happens!

It seems like every time there is a new guy, they try to hook him up with Brooke, and SOME Leyton fans are suddenly the biggest fans of the pairing, most likely to get Brooke out of Leyton's way.
I know SOME Brucas fans tend to do the same thing, and I just honestly think it's really unfair.
I am a Brucas fan, and I would hate for Peyton to end up with some random new guy, like maybe the record guy John Knight that Mia hinted at. Or Pete. Come on Leyton fans, you know you were screaming NOT A NEW GUY FOR PEYTON.
I could see some potential with Peyton and Skillz. Just like I could see some potential in Brooke and Mouth. But a new guy for either of them would be so disappointing after their builds with Lucas (both of them) and with Jake (Peyton).
If I can't have Brucas and Jayton, then I would rather Brooke end up with Mouth or something and Peyton end up with Skillz maybe rather than new guys.
But apparently, Skillz is hooking up with Deb now, lol.

wow i was mad as hell what lucas said to peyton i mean they really need to be together i hated brooke with him and i hated lindsey too lucas and peyton have been throught it all together keiths shotting, peytons stalker,lucas heart promblem. they are soulmates and need to be together and i beat u if the don't get together ratings will drop.asfor the rest of the gang brooke needs a man of her own and i would love to see her have or adopt a kid. haley and nathan need to let jamie see dan before he dies he is trying some what to be better.mouth needs to purpose to his girlfriend and deb needs to find a man her own age and stay away from clowns.lol and skills well i think if peyton and lucas dont get back together peyton and skills should hook u for real.

And we don't know that the book is about Peyton, until he says it is about Peyton I won't state anything about this book.

Why are my fellow Leyton fans pushing for Brooke and the Doctor? I would rather Brooke end up alone in the show than with a new guy brought in at the end of season 5. I get that we don't want her with Lucas because we want Peyton there, but really? How would we feel if they tried to stick Peyton with a new guy?
Maybe Brooke and Skillz, or Mouth (although I like him with Millicent)... not Brooke and the new guy!
And if they would bring Jake back (since Bryan's show was canceled) for Peyton, I don't think I can resist Jeyton and Brucas like the old days!

It's not weird! My brother watches it. Some guys in my class (I'm in college) were talking about it the other day. Some guys in my religious center were also talking about it. There most likely is a larger female fanbase, but there are definitely males watching. If you chat on various OTH forums, you will usually find some of them, probably talking about Sophia Bush ;) lol

The CW likes to promote things that look like steamy love scenes. Lucas and Peyton were wearing the same outfits. In the promo, it looked like Lucas was half dead, not having sex. My guess is that the promo was the part where Peyton was taking Lucas' clothes off and getting him ready for bed, but they put it in such a way and slowed it down to make it look romantic or sexual... Personally, I'm happy it was a misleading promo. Lucas clearly has no CURRENT feelings for Peyton, and it would be to random and sudden if he slept with her.

I hate what is happening to Peyton. She's been tormented all season long. Although, even with all the angst, I have really enjoyed Hilarie's performances this year! She has been outstanding!!!
Lucas needs to snap out of it and grow the **** up!
I love the Doctor and Brooke - he is definitely McDreamy!
I really enjoy watching Peyton and Haley scenes - and with Mia thrown in - they are terrific.
Nathan and Jamie were really sweet.
Deb and Skills - not so much!
Lucas needs to shape up and apologize his *** off to Peyton after she took care of him and he turns into a complete and utter jack***!!
This Lucas is unrecognizable from the S1 nice guy. Peyton deserves better!

Loved the PH moments. Hilarie and Joy are so wonderful together!
Loved BP - Hilarie and Sophia are still going strong! (I do agree with TVGuide though, "no one can cry like Hilarie Burton"!!)

Here are some things that I found interesting:
Nathan told Lucas to move on --> He immediately left and went to Brooke
Brooke told Lucas he couldn't stay, so he left and got drunk.
Lucas told Brooke that love doesn't need words (like, oh I don't know, words in a book) to be love
Mia tells Peyton that guys always tell the truth when they're wasted, and then a drunk Lucas tells Peyton he hates her (although I think that was just his suffering speaking and that he really doesn't hate her)
Haley didn't see anything imaginative in the clouds like Jamie did... maybe she's lost her youth. Then, she goes to relive her childhood (the water-balloon games with Lucas)
Dan looks like he's going to kill... again! I thought he was becoming a better guy...
Peyton's ringtone is the same song used in FAMILY GUY's OTH Spoof
Angie hooked up to the machines was so obviously a doll! But I guess they couldn't have done anything about that... Maybe they shouldn't have filmed so close!
Dr. Ethan Copeland calls Brooke "Brooke" which I find extremely unprofessional. And I feel that Brooke asking for a first name is random.

We get how all of that happened, but we were kind of expecting to at sleast see that part Was that part cut for some reason?- I was looking forward to lucas and p.sawyer hooking up and in the radio commercials it sounded like lucas tells peyton he loves her and missed her. what happend? I was so disappointed. Do we just assume they hooked up at lucas's place and she leaves and lucas tells her he hates her. Seriously I hope lucas will ask peyton to go to vegas with him even though him and brooke are getting friendly/closer but not in a sexual way which is good. Brooke should hook up with the dr anyway. I did not like the way the episode ended. Peyton need to fight for lucas don't stand back and let lindsay win him when he obviously is still in love with peyton since her wrote that second book about her.

im really shocked. . i think lucas said what he said because he was mad at the fact that lindsey is movin on & he isnt, so he took it out on peyton. .so messed up.

I wish Peyton had gotten to spend more time with Angie so Lucas could see her with a baby. I wish she had stayed at the hospital. I also wish Lucas had his phone at Skills' and answered it when Peyton called. I love Brooke and Dr. Ethan. I hate what Lucas said to Peyton, but I love that Lindsay has moved on. It's the right thing.

I'm so sick of the Angie storyline. Brooke and her fake cry got really annoying and repetitive. The writers should leave the crying to Peyton, she does it best.
The "I hate you" was an interesting twist. Lucas has pretty much hit rock bottom, and I'm excited to see how LP are going to overcome this one next season. I'm just glad he's finlly facing his emotions regarding Peyton, even if it's hate, at least it's something.
Jamie was cute as alwasy. Jackson is such a breath of fresh air for this show.

I have to agree that baby is NOT cute at all! Though, speaking of cute Jamie is around to fill the cute quotient already..he's so purposely sweet and cute it's annoying! Lucas is such an ass this season I almost hate to watch..yet I do every week without fail!!

Jamie/Haley- AMAZING! I love those two together and I couldn't wait to see them! I'm glad she was honest about it.. .but I really don't like him walking out alone.. but i love the look she gave him, and the way he looked at her was sooo heartbreaking.
Jamie/Nathan: MAN~! I LOVE them! I was excited to see them walking on the riverfront, becuase I walked that EXACT same place just weeks ago! haha yeay! and the whole starburst thing at the game... i get it now haha...
I wasn't that happy that we didn't get to see Jamie reprimanded for walking off sort of.. but i would have wanted it to be from nathan, not haley... and Haley to Nathan a tad...
Skillz/Deb- NO LIE... I've always thought... i wonder if they'll ever sleep together.. ever since the whole tim/deb at the boy toy.. .haha i was like .. i oculd see some kid doing deb... but i htought of Chris keller haha
Angie/Brooke/- SOOO SAD! man... i was with tons of people that dont watch the show while i was watching.. so i couldn't hear it good... but man! those scenes were heartbreaking when she was crying and stuff about the baby! and AT FIRST... i hated this doctor.. like yea he was cute.. .but the whole first name thing... GO TO HELL haha but now im liking him a little bit... just form letting my mind settle a little.... i like him... i could see Owen coming back in Season 6 and both trying to win her over someone needs to find over Brooke for once!
Peyton and Lucas were being great friends to brooke today... AND MAN! MIA COMING BACK WAS MY DREAM COME TRUE! im sooooo entering that Starburst contest, and i dont even really eat candy, but i want to win that.!
and thats about all i have to say haha can't wait for that podcast!

I am also loving the Brooke/Ethan thing I so hope that they explore that next season that would be great, finally Brooke might have found her Mr Right. I ma really hating Lucas at the moment, I was actually really shocked when he said that he hated Peyton i just couldnt believe it, such an a$$ to her. My fav part of this ep would have to be the scenes with Nathan and Jamie so cute and such great chemistry those two have, great combo. Really great intro into the season finale, bring on season 6!!!!

Ay! It has been an exhausting day and I totally got the name of this week's episode wrong! I apologize, it's totally my fault, I've had almost no sleep but wanted to make sure you all got the recap up in time. The Upfronts were AMAZING, I'll keep you posted on that...Jackie is in Italy, I'm in New York and Sarah is in Chicago so I'm not positive when the podcast will be up (or recorded) but I promise it will be up as soon as possible! Well, yet another great episode from the OTH writers. This was chocked full of surprises and definately some WTF moments.
I am so loving the Brooke and Lucas friendship. That is the one thing that I missed last season. And they way they both are with Angie, man I wish that kid were staying around.
Even though very few, but the Scott family (Nathan, Haley and Jamie) are back on track. They are just perfect for each other.
Deb and Skillz..yeah, I'll skip that.
The I hate you to Peyton..that was a powerful scene acted beautifully. Did Peyton fully deserve the I hate you? No. Is she partially responsible for the demise of Lucas and Lindsey? Yes. The other party responsible is Lucas. It was shocking to hear...but CMM said it so sexally, it gave me chills.
Cannot wait for the finale next week. Has the triangle become a square??? We shall see next week.

I agree last night was the best episode , I'm feeling brooke and doc, I can't believe lucas said that to peyton, I think he said it because he thinks that she is avoiding him, but I think she was just waiting for him to move past lindsay. don't think lucas is taking any of the girls to vegas. skills and deb, its funny and creepy at the same time but the show needs something like that.

finally a great one tree hill episode this season. i personally loved the whole thing even the creepy fling between skillz and deb.
i loved how the writers totally pulled a flip on us at the end when everyone one was expecting a leyton hookup, the total opposite of what really did happen
angela, i totally agree with you that lucas is going to pick brooke because why would he invite lindsay if she is seeing someone else and why would he invite peyton apparently he hates and and even if he invites her she definetly should not accept the offer so for me all signs point to brooke especially with their friendship getting stronger lately

Great recap although you got the title of the episode wrong: Crying Won't Help You Now was the name of the last episode whereas this episode was called "Hate Is Safer Than Love"
Anyways this episode was really good in terms of it being way better than all of the other stuff we've been getting since this season started. I was thoroughly entertained and for once, I didn't feel bored having to sit through OTH after watching a (frustrating) episode of GG.
When is the podcast going up? My iPod is practically itching for the latest installments:P

I really liked this episode. But I think you've made a mistake about the title. It's "Hate is safer than love". "Crying won't help you now" was last week episode.

The title of the episode wasn't "Crying Won't Help You Now" (that was E16), but "Hate is Safer Than Love":)

The episode was pretty good!
Nathan/Jamie scenes rocked especially Nate trying to pull Jamie up the hill and Jamie consoling him when he didnt make it!!
Haley/Jamie - Cute!
Skills and Deb - weird to say the least!
Lucas - OTT!!
The annoying thing about it though was the fact that we only got 5 seconds at the end of Nathan and Haley scenes!!! Us Naley fans need more lol!!

This season is definitely getting good! I hate what Lindsay did to Lucas! I love Lucas. I cannot see him with anyone else especially not Peyton. Maybe Brooke but I want Brooke to end up with the Dr. And please dump that baby!!! She is not cute!

OMG!!!!!!!!!! Season finale is gonna be da shiznit!!!!!!! I vote Brooke as the person Lucas calls to go to Vegas. After that "Ouch" moment when he tells Peyt he hates her, I don't think there's hope for her still. And Lindsey moving on so quickly... That's gotta hurt his pride. I thought Dr Hottie McHot was supper gorgeous and had mad chemistry with Brooke, but I'm hoping for a Brucas reunion.
