Supernatural: Kripkeeeeeeeeeeee!
Holy crap. Holy crap! Supernatural hit us with the most shocking finale we’ve seen since the beloved Metallicar was t-boned by a semi. How could they do this to us?
We catch up with the guys when Dean’s got about 30 hours to live. Things are looking grim for Dean – he’s dreaming of Hellhounds, hallucinating demon faces, and generally cursing his fate. The good news? Bobby thinks he might be able to help. Now that they know Lilith holds the contract, they can track her down and kill her. How hard could it be?
Pretty darn hard, thank you. Lilith is a bad-ass, and the normal demon-fighting procedures won’t cut it. Sam wants to summon Ruby to get her knife but Dean won’t hear of it. She lies! Sam sneaks off to summon Ruby anyway – give me your demon-killing knife! Ruby says that won’t do a whole hell of a lot, but Sam? He just might already have the skills he needs to save Dean. See those demon-controlling powers that Old Yellow Eyes gave to his general are lying dormant in Sam. If he can tap into them, he can control Lilith and save Dean.
But Dean won’t have that. Yes, of course, Dean was eavesdropping – he knew Sam wouldn’t listen to him. What’s more, he manages to piss Ruby off enough that she starts beating the crap out of him, giving him an opportunity to pinch the knife. What’s more, he’s already prepared a Devil’s Trap on the ceiling. Now they’ve got the knife, and Ruby can’t go after them.
The guys try to slip off, but Bobby’s no slouch – he’s disabled the Metallicar to ensure he gets to go with them. The guys track Lilith to an idyllic suburb in Indiana, where the big bad is on “shore leave.” She’s inhabiting a cherubic little girl, and we won’t be able to pass a playground without shuddering after seeing Lilith at play. Lilith-girl kills a babysitter, makes a large blood puddle out of the family dog, snaps her grandpa’s neck, and generally has her family living in terror. It’s not good.
One of the few upsides of Dean’s approaching deadline is he can see demons true faces, so he’s able to tell Sam and Bobby where all the other demon-possessed folks are hiding in plain sight. The guys do a little stealthy demon pruning, but before they can get too far, someone grabs Dean. It’s Ruby! How’d she escape? Unfortunately, the argument they have attracts the demons’ attention, so our heroes have to make a run to Lilith-girl’s house. Bobby isn’t with them – he’s busy blessing the local water supply, so the sprinklers turn into serious demon repellant. Nice work, Bobby!
Sam makes his way up to the little girl’s pretty pink bedroom, and prepares to use the demon-killing knife to do in the sleeping child (at her mother’s terrified urgings). Right before he can strike the fatal blow, Dean stops him – Lilith isn’t in her anymore! The clock strikes midnight just as the guys have finished sequestering the family in the relatively safe confines of the basement, and the Hellhounds start coming. Dean can see them approach, and he, Sam and Ruby barricade themselves inside a room. But something’s not right – Ruby isn’t herself. Lilith has taken over Ruby! She pins the guys, then lets the Hellhounds in. They savage Dean while Sam watches in despair. Then she prepares to work her deadly white-light mojo on the boys, but something goes wrong. Ruby’s eyes roll back, and Sam is released, He’s perfectly willing to use the knife on Ruby, but the demon leaves her body before he can strike.
So we’re left with Sam and Dean. Sam cradles Dean, but nobody’s home—he’s dead. No, really. He’s dead. They didn’t save him. Dean is actually dead. Aigh!
It gets worse – the camera zooms into Dean’s lifeless eye, and we go deep inside him, all the way to hell itself. We’re left with the image of Dean chained in a dark, foreboding hell, screaming for Sam to help him. Holy crap!
Comments
Let me just get it out that I am a Sammy girl, so if I favour him in my applauds towards Jensen and Jared's magnificant ability to turn an ah-mazing script (Kudos Kripke, but I agree with freefalling. I'm not speaking to you, and I quote Robin, "You Magnificant Basturd") into seemingly real people that I as well as many others love and feel for them.
Jared, no words, or at the very least of my awe of your God given ability to bring life to Sam Winchester, too many. I cried with you and for you for your pain of losing Dean. Even though that is the first memory that comes to mind when I think of the season finale as well as what I think of your role in this episode, it is not the only that we kudos you to. I am also seriously excited to see how you cope with the lost of Dean and the drastic measures you will follow to get him back. I also can't wait to see how you get in touch with your powers not only to do this, but to finally be truly prepared for the war. I would like to thank you for such an experiance. P.S Thank you for being the respectable, mature brother even before the occurance of Dean's selling of his soul! One of many reason as to why I am a Sammy Girl!
Jensen, sweety I love you too, of course! That last showing of you was absolutly heart wrenching, and I have so much to say about your incredible performance that there is no perfect way to describe it, and my attempts to do so can fill a book, just as Jared's. I love how you can make Dean into a really deep character that has so much more than what meets the eye. How Dean has his macho front, sexy badass, love for his family and the torture that he has for himself and how he was always the one in the family who always tried to keep things together. Dean was the one always trying to appeal to both Sam and his Dad as the one who they can always rely on; the pressure of it all, it is amazing how you made it all too real. I can't wait to see you again in S4, and the troubling problems that you must face, but mainly with yourself, will be quite the experiance.
And, of course, Supernatural would not be what it is now without everyone who has ever participated in the Supernatural experiance. Every little detail is what makes Supernatural what we all love and cherish. I would like to thank EVERYONE on the Supernatural team, your work is significant, no matter how minor, in the creation of this show.
BTW You guys I just wanted to say I am seriously amazed at how well and heartfelt you guys describe your awe and appreciation towards this show as a whole and as the incredible individuals who make it so addictable. Great Job.

Although it tore me apart, I absolutely loved the finale. The performances were incredible and the story was positively riveting. Kripke is a genius. I can't wait to see how they get Dean out of Hell! I hope Sam can tap into his powers to pull him out without going Evil. If he does have to go Evil, I hope Dean brings him back to the "light" quickly. The boys need to be together during this fight!

One thing struck me in this wonderfully amazing yet heartwrenching finale. it threaded back to S1's "nightmare" episode. When Sam was in the closet and he had a vision of dean dying, it caused Sam to tap into his abilities and he used telekinesis. In this finale, Sam saw dean die (for real this time) and his abilities charged to the surface, again, in time to save himself from lilith. I can't wait to see how he gets dean out of hell and back into his body. Can Sam heal/bring the dead back to life? Can sam reverse time? aaarrrrgggggg. 4 months?!?!?!?! I think Kripke is lucifer.
LORI: The story that Chad Michael Murray was going to replace Jensen was a joke that was and still is hilarious! Don't worry the extremely talented Jensen Ackles will be back next season. :-) I believe both J & J are contracted for 5 years.
Stephanie: " Sam is going to spend the whole rest of the season mopping and trying to find a way to bring him back."
Kripke is too smart to drag it out. he knows keeping Sam and Dean apart would drive fans away. Kripke recently said in an interview (published in the Official Supernatural Magazine) that the main focus of the show is the brother relationship. Don't worry, I have every confidence he'll resolve this quickly by doing so in the S4 opener. S4 will also bring some revelations about Mary....

I loved the season, best yet... But I think dad will save the day. Or sam gets the cult and opens hell's gate.

Dangit now that Dean is in hell that means that Sam is going to spend the whole rest of the season mopping and trying to find a way to bring him back. Sams caracter is kinda boring by itself Dean was the funny one. I dont know this next seasons looking grim. I hope it turns out diffrent than what i think. But who knows we might not even get to see any of the shows the CW network is in searious trouble in the rating department and is in risk of being shut down or worse merging with antoher network which would mean major changes

I never miss an episode of this show and by far this season finale was the best episode yet!! I can't wait to see whats to come in season 4!!

The boys singing Bon Jovi was a dream come true!I didn't know if I laughed, cried, sang along or screamed at that scene!
Totally awesome.Amazing finale, even with Dean dying.Best episode ever.

You forgot another choice on that last question....Sam's quivering lip as Dean slipped away before entering Hell. That totally got me bawling more than anything.
Posted by: Claire | May 18, 2008 5:54 PM
Let me say first off I love Dean so it broke my heart to see him die. What will be come of the show without him?,lol but anyway I just knew Sam and Ruby would come up with a way to save him. I wasn't happy he died but the finale was wonderful.

The little girl with evil-power stuff is over-used(go and see HIDE & SEEK, THE RING, THE 4400, even SUPERNATURAL itself had done it before). I thought Sam would be able to use his power when the hell-hounds came to get Dean, not when Dean's already dead and White-Eyes-Demon came to kill HIM. Yes, heart-breaking the episode was, but kinda disappointing too. However, I think Dean definitely WILL be back next season, with some kind of superpower, and EVIL in him. That would be fun. Can't wait!

Finally got to see the episode and wow, just wow.
It's been an uneven season Kripke but you managed to pull it together in last few episodes. Well done.
How is it possible that Jensen Ackles just keeps getting better and better. No matter what they give him, he steps up to the challenge and then surpasses it. Why this guy isn't being offered Oscar-caliber scripts is so beyond my comprehension.
Jared also brought his A-game to the finale. He broke my heart more than once during the course of the episode.
The only weak spot remains Katie Cassidy as Ruby. Neither the actress nor the character are interesting enough to warrant the kind of screen time devoted to them during this season.
All I can hope is that with Ruby's "meat suit" apparently dead, they will replace her with a more competent actress.
But all in all, that's what a season finale should look like. Great effort team.

Instead of pushing the new 90210 and Gossip Girl, the CW should be advertising the hell out of this amazing, incredible, unique show that blew us away last night with an unparalleled finale! My God, I sat weeping throughout most of it, screaming through other parts, and at the end, I just sat there, stunned, in disbelief. THEY KILLED DEAN? NO! They did NOT kill Dean! Kripke, you Magnificent Bastard, you ripped out our hearts and stomped all over them! Way to go!
Posted by: Robin | May 17, 2008 7:20 PM
i like supernatural and the funny line of dean makes me laugh evry time. Specially the bitch word. the last scene of dean in hell was awesome. it will be cool if it returns again.

Um, OK i cried, and seriously, I'm far to emotionally attached to these characters but how can you not be?
Jared & Jensen, You to are very very gifted, and us fans are blessed to be able to watch you every week. I try to describe the show to friends who have never seen is before and I always say, "It's like watching a really good scary movie every week, with some very very good looking guys, who are utterly hilarious and impossible to love, and extremely talented." So keep up the good work.
Kirpe, all I can say is that you better fine a really creative way to bring dean back!
Kim Manners, Great job.
To all keep up the good work, I'm an avid fan and really appreciate your work!

I can't say anything about the finale except Heartbreaking!

The best season ending I have EVER seen on ANY show. Awesome is the only word I can think of. I can't wait for season #4.
Thank you writers and cast of Supernatural.

OK FIRST OF ALL I THOUGHT IT WAS MILDLY DISTURBING WHEN LILLITH WALKED IN WITH THE CATS BLOOD ON HER AND WAS ALL "THE CAT WAS MEAN TO ME" AND THEN WHEN SHE SAID IT TO GRANDPA BEFORE SHE SNAPPED HIS NECK WITH THE WAIVE OF HER HAND. DUuUuUuUuUde... it makes me look at my daughter playing with our dog in a new light... but i loved it... and i guess when ruby said that hell was like hellraiser without the custom leather, she was tellin the truth... all those chains... would be cool if dean sees bela all strapped up... i would smile... im not a big fan of her... but i did end up liking ruby... how did she get out of that circle in the basement... makes me wonder... but i cant wait for the next season... also cant wait for the bloopers on the seasons dvd extras... WHAT AM I GONNA DO FOR FOUR SUPERNATURAL-LESS MONTHS?!?!?!

I was both touched by the season finale as well as shocked and giddy! Iadored my boys in this episode, and I can't wait for it to return! That was the best season finale I've ever seen, and the ending made me weep. For Sam, for Dean, and for the world who may not be able to ever see Dean again. I pray this isn't true. But thank goodness for the Bon Jovi seen. It was the perfect mixture of comedy with our sweet Jared singing and our selfless Dean letting a small glimpse of his true fear of his fate show. I hope Sam can survive this tradgedy for now and get Lilith so the war will for the most part begin to fail. I love you, Jared and Jensen! We all do, and we can't wait to see you guys again in September!

I just cant believe that Dean is actually dead, actually dead!!!!! i really thought that they would come up with some way to save him. and sam was so heartbreaking at the end :(

Holy. Motherlovin. Crap.
May I just say, (and I mean no disrespect): Kripke, Lilith’s got nothing on you.
I forgot to breathe from around about the point when Dean comes to face to face with the hellhound in his dream.
Going without oxygen that long served up with ridiculously good performances from both Jensen and Jared and garnished with the memory of Dean’s death and the knowledge of an over four month period of enforced, indentured Supernatural suspended animation has marked my immortal SOUL.
Jesus.H.Christ. On a WHEELbarrow.
I lived every second of the episode with them. My pulse is only beginning to slow now – after watching it a second time.
First things first.
Jensen Ackles.
You broke my heart so many times in this episode I may never find all the pieces again. The emotion you can convey without any dialogue is breathtaking. But equally when you ARE given words (superbly written script, kudos Kripke – sorry we are no longer on a first name basis, mate. You killed Dean. Nuff said) …I think my heart may actually have stopped a couple of times. Like when you told Sam to remember what you taught him and look after your car …I know I have said this once before, but it bears repeating:
Holy. Motherlovin. Crap.
My God. You are so good it is scary. I cannot wait to see everything else that you do! You must have been wiped OUT by the end of that. Am speechless - but not (if you see what I mean). Thank you so much for putting your heart and soul and blood and tears into this role and this show. I love Dean and Supernatural so much ‘that between you and me? It’s probably unconstitutional’. And tis all thanks to thee, kind sir. Tis official. You. Rock. Pure and utter class.
Oh and by the way? Your answer at that convention when asked if Dean would be singing any time soon? Seriously impressive line of bulls**t you can switch on there. I would like to buy you a drink. Or several. Stellar.
And Jared.
You were so good in this episode it was unbelievable. You may be able to tell I am a Dean Girl, but you ROCKED this episode. You got the balance of the simultaneous grief and denial of watching your family and your best friend dying by degrees down to perfection. And that last scene after Lilith left Ruby’s body and Dean was gone? 11 out of 10. If I had a hat on I would take it off to you sir.
Kim Manners. Exquisite. I applaud you.
Slight issue with quality of special effects/CGI of endscene in Purgatory/Hell notwithstanding, this episode is one of the best ever. This season in general has been in a different league to the previous ones even though they too were superb - in Season 1 you were still finding the characters and in Season 2 you had found them but were redefining where they were going – and Season 4 to come. Such riches in store for us!
Wow.
Have so much to say that I cannot speak.
Thank you and enjoy a well-earned rest for a job SERIOUSLY well done. Cannot WAIT to see you after the summer. Thank you!!!
(Am done.)

But personally ... how could they send Dean to hell?! They were supposed to save him!! It's just not Supernatural without Dean. I guess I'll have to wait for next season won't I?
