Supernatural: Who Wants to Live Forever?

We're backing away slowly from the melon ballers after this episode of Supernatural! Seriously-we haven't been that freaked out (or grossed out) in a very, very long time. Something about the immortal Dr. Benton, with is stitched-up face and borrowed organs, just gave us the willies. Gah!

The guys investigate a town where people are turning up with missing livers, or waking up in a bathtub full of ice minus a kidney. Could it be zombies? Well, not unless zombies are suddenly using Civil War-era surgical techniques. The various bits are being harvested.

Sam figures out the culprit is Doc Benton -- a guy who figured out the secret to immortality. Yes, John Winchester took his heart out, but apparently the not-so-good doctor got another one. See, he may have figured out how to live forever, but that doesn't mean various bits and pieces don't wear out after a lifetime of use.

But Sam knew all along that Benton was the culprit -- he wants to find the doc and learn the secret of immortality for Dean. If Dean doesn't die, he can't go to hell. Smart, right? Dean has other things on his mind -- Bobby got a lead on Bela, and Dean is bent on finding her and taking back the Colt. If he can't do that, he'll be happy just killing her.

So the brothers split up, which is always a dicey proposition. Dean finds Bela (with the help of hermit-like Hunter Rufus, who we loved), and tells her he knows her story. Her parents died in a horrible car crash years ago, and Bela inherited big bucks. Bela doesn't want to talk about the past - she tells Dean the Colt is long gone. Dean looks like he's going to kill her, but he notices some greenery on the top of her door and lets her live. Bela picks Dean's pocket and finds out the hotel he and Sam are staying in. She calls that information in to someone.

Sam continues his search for the undying doc, and finds his workshop. One of Doc's victims -- a recent heart donor -- is very dead. Another -- a woman with the skin flayed off her arm, and maggots crawling all over the wound -- is still alive. Sam rescues her and drives away, running over the doc in the process. But a little grievous bodily harm isn't going to keep that guy down! He tracks Sam down and drags him back to his lair, where he decides he's going to harvest Sam's pretty, pretty eyes. Enter the jagged melon baller, which he pushes entirely too far into Sam's eye socket... but before he can scoop the eye out, Dean enter, shooting. Shots don't bother Benton, and neither does the knife Dean stabs him with -- but chloroform, which Dean poured all over the knife, does have an effect. When Doc wakes up again, he's incapacitated. He tells the guys he can share the secret of staying alive, and Sam wants to hear him out - it can buy us some time! But Dean wants nothing to do with it -- I don't want to be some ghoul living off stolen body parts! I'd rather go to hell! The guys lock Doc in an old refrigerator and bury it out back. He may not be able to die, but Doc isn't going anywhere for a while.

Meanwhile, Bela finds the guys' hotel room -- and shoots up the bodies in the beds. Fortunately, those bodies were blow-up dolls (Hee!). Dean calls -- he knows what's going on. Bela didn't kill her parents herself -- a demon did it. She sold her soul to destroy her molesting, abusive parents when she was 14, and now, 10 years later, the contract is up. She confesses that she was trying to use the Colt as leverage to get out of her deal, but instead, the demon who had her contract told her to kill Sam. That demon -- the big, bad Lilith -- holds Dean's contract, too. Bela begs Dean for help. Too late, he says -- if you'd come to us from the beginning, before all the cheating and double-dealing, we might have been able to do something. Now it's too late. He hangs up, and Bela sits there, alone, listening to the Hellhounds bay and snarl as they come to take her to hell.

What did you think? Were you satisfied with the resolution to the Bela story? Do you think Dean should have listened to what Doc Benton had to say? Are you staying far away from the cutlery drawer? Talk about it in the comments!

DEAN WAS SUCH AN ASS TO BELA!!!!
It kinda got me upset.

l liked bela !! i´d to see her in season 4 !!

Nothing against Lauren but I'm so glad that Bela is dead now. I think it's hilarious that there is apparently a small minority of people who actually liked that character. Maybe if she hadn't been such an annoying little snob instead of an interesting antagonist it wouldn't have been so bad. How people can like a character that the writers had to make the boys out of character, agonizingly slow on the uptake, and just stupid in order to pull off the stuff that she did. Maybe if the writers had actually allowed the boys to react believably towards her like they did when they caught onto the fact that Gordon was no good instead of repeatedly making them slip up around her for no reason other than a plot device.

I hated her backstory because it was exactly the kind of cliched "poor me" story I feared they would go with. Can't they just have made her bad because she was a bad person? They had to try and generate sympathy? Well didn't work for me because I don't feel bad for some stuck up little brat who did all the things that she did to Dean and Sam. Her backstory would've been far more interesting if they hadn't gone with with the predictable and over-used sob story and instead had her kill her parents out of greed (for their money). Glad she's dead and I hope she stays gone. Have them come up with some believable antagonists. I don't mind the boys getting beaten as long as they go down fighting like we know they do. Instead of repeatedly underestimating someone like they were written doing with Bela when they are way too smart for that.

This show Supernatural is so fantastic.
Hi from Slovakia.

Billy Drago (the good Doc Benton) is the creepiest guy ever....I mean, I'm sure he's nice in person but he always plays the bad guy or the demon and he does it WAY too well. :) Also, I'm thrilled to see Steven Williams...I am hoing we see him as Rufus next season. I think he knows more than anyone at this point and would go to either the good or evil side...depending on which one gave him what he wants. Awesome new character!

And the wrap up of the Bela storyline was perfect...neat, tidy, quick.

I loved Bela and Lauren, and although i genuinely felt horrible for Bela, i think it was an awesome resolution

this show is great i love it
i dont want it to end i will miss my men especially jensen
i will be watching the old episode
cant wait for the next season it will be great as usual
can wait
love nibbi

yeah, I have to agree. Fantastic writing, Sarah!!! Would be awesome if we could get a supernatural podcast as well. i know, writing is cool, too ... but a podcast would be even better. maybe you keep that in mind.

the episode was creepy and the best episode of season three so far.
i think the bela storyline turned out great. i will miss lauren. she was really good!
the doc - really creepy ... barbas in supernatural. was cool to see! =)
can't wait for the next episode ... dean's deal is killing me.....

greets from germany.

The good doctor reminded me a little too much of the ghoulie in "Jeepers Creepers".(the 1st one) I never did like Bela, but I did feel sorry for her. They should not have had her been sexually abused as a child, they should have just had her been a greedy horrible little snob.

I don't want it to end so soon.!.(sign).But season4 should be one hell of a year.

I loved it. Kavan Smith as the guy in the teaser was great I love him on SGA. Barbas on sn was great but so deserved more scree time when you get a great actor from Charmed he needed to be in the eppy more! I will miss Bela I think she was great no matter hat other fans will say Ruby needs a new actress to play her. IDEA! Have Rudy demon go into Bela's body win win lol

Fantastic writing by Sera as per usual. The best episode of Season 3 so far (I know next week's will top this one!!)

Sorry to see Lauren go as she is a very good actress and I really liked Bela as a character but the resolution was very well done and the reason of killing a relative was hinted at in Red Sky at Morning from her reaction to Dean asking if Daddy didn't hug her enough - I think that was the line.

Next week's finale will kill me but I still can't wait :-)

Ciao from Toronto
