Gossip Girl: A Cougar Joins The Cast!
Nate's going to have his hands full this fall on Gossip Girl now that he'll be involved with an older woman! EOnline.com reports that a cougar will be joining the cast -- and she's got her sights set on Nate. Mädchen Amick (Twin Peaks, ER, Viva Laughlin) will be around for several episodes this fall. And not only will she be a big part of Nate's storylines, but she'll also have a "surprising connection" to another new cast member. We'd like to wildly speculate, but since it's a NEW cast member, we have no idea (otherwise, we would've guessed she was an old love of Rufus's). No worries, Samantha. I got that you were criticizing the show, not us. I just wanted to clarify what I meant -- several other commenters expressed surprise that I used the term, and I wanted to be sure everyone understood where I was coming from!

Jackie- Sorry! I wasn't bothered by your use of the term 'cougar' but rather by the fact that this show keeps throwing the dregs of modern society at us and making them more acceptable. I would never disagree angrily with you at CWSource- you're just doing your jobs!

Wow! I didn't expect such controversy over the "cougar" term. I agree that 38 isn't old - or even close to it. But I also don't think that by calling the actress a "cougar" that I'm calling her old -- just significantly older than her onscreen lover. That's it. I thought that the term by definition meant a woman who's hot, beautiful, sexy, and older than the guy she's dating/interested in. So in this case, it does apply to the character -- a gorgeous actress who's cast in a role where she'll be dating a kid who's supposed to be 16 on the show. A woman in her late thirties romancing a high schooler? According to my definition, "cougar" qualifies.
It seems that some of you have interpreted it as something negative -- that's new to me, and I certainly didn't mean to imply anything negative by it. It's a trendy, admittedly silly term that I took straight from the EOnline.com article I linked to.
Hope that clears things up a bit!
hanncoll: On Gossip Girl, high school IS the peak of the characters' lives, so I think to Nate and the gang, this woman does count as a cougar, yes. To the average person? Probably not, but I was thinking in terms of the show and its characters.

Good lord. She's ridiculously hot, and young, and beautiful, and won't be a "cougar" (what a distasteful term) for another two decades. Meryl Streep? Cougar. Madchen Amick? Hotass.
Anyway, I want him with Serena, to redeem themselves a bit, make the cheating on Blair not for nothing.

A cougar? So that's what it's called when when an older woman is in a relationship with a much younger man? Wow, that's so much more complimentary than it would have been for an older man to be hooked up with a young girl. Then he's a dirty old man, right? Maybe even a perverted sexual predator? But cougar...that's good.
It's not like I watch Gossip Girl regularly. So honestly, I don't have to watch this and think about the double standard or inappropriateness. But it just seems that if you promote relationships like this on tv and then talk about them as if they are scandals later, there's a lot of hypocricy going on there. Look at Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher- is she a 'cougar'? Look at how much heat they got for their relationship!
You're already promoting underage drinking, sex, unfaithfulness, lying, cheating, and, of course, gossip, on this show. Haven't you done enough?

I hope this is just in the beginning, because I want more Nate/Jenny friendship bonding so eventually we can have a romance between these two.
Their chemistry is amazing!!!
and I love how they open up to each other whenever they get the chance to interact.
I'm glad you guys added Jenny to the list,
because there are many NJ shippers out there too!

Um...38 is a cougar? Maybe in the reality that says high school is the peak of one's life, but in the real world, not so much.
