One Tree Hill Podcast: "The First Cut Is The Deepest"

Listen Now

Lucas refusing to do what's best for his health... again? Sheryl Crow reducing Haley to a blubbering fangirl? Keith making his dumbest move yet? An eyeliner addict seducing Lucas on a carousel? Aforementioned eyeliner addict turning out to be Jake's ex?

Lucas and Dan face off

They seem like events we dreamt up, but all of these things happened in "The First Cut Is The Deepest," a rage-inspiring episode for some of us (Sarah), and a controversial one for everyone. We think Brooke has every right to be angry right now (and she's got the best look of contempt we've ever seen), wish Nathan and Haley had way more screen time, and don't like where this Nikki plot is going... not one bit. Listen to our One Tree Hill podcast for "The First Cut Is The Deepest!"

a strongly disagree with what you said about teen shows not dealing with the issues, like abortion. One Tree Hill isn't just any teen show, its the best one. and you will see that it does deal with it in many ways. Just wait for the brooke pregnancy storyline, and in the fourth season too, wait for the Clean Teens Storyline. I know one of you hates spoilers, so i won't say anything, but OTH actually deals with abortion quite a bit. And You will see it again in the 4th season with another couple which i won't say so you won't get pissed at me for giving anything away! So yeah, i know it's not your fault you haven't seen the rest, and i am trying to be "neutral", but then again you need to be too. you can't just come out and say oth doesn't deal with that problem, when you only saw a mere 2 seasons. :D

JR, I just posted the new one for "Spirit in the Night" -- check it out here:

http://blogs.trb.com/network/cwsource/2008/07/one_tree_hill_podcast_spirit_i.html

Are you guys putting up the new podcast today?
Cant wait!

Alyssa, thats nice at least I have multiple tracks unlike some. ;)

I agree what Peyton did was wrong and that Brooke shouldn't be expected to forgive her right away. I think Peyton does do things in later episodes to show she cares for Brooke, although I definitely think she could have done more. Lucas is a big fat baby and I hate him. I don't thinnk either of the girls should be with him.
I'm not really sure why people are talking about season 4 when this is a season ONE podcast. I don't think Peyton is wrong for what she does/says at the end of season 3. Think about the context in which she did what she did AND she was just trying to be honest this time, like she should have been in season one. I also agree that the character of Nicki is annoying, (whichever one of you mentioned her eyeliner will appreciate Peyton's comment to her in episode after next) but she does make for some good Jake drama! I understand your point about the whole triangle thing getting old.

Anonymous, yeah I've heard that song before too.

oh! on the nikki not having a baby thing... i think jake kinda explaines that later... idk.
but the abortion line, mark tried to do that last year w/ brooke, but the network WOULD NOT LET HIM
so he tried, but was shot down --hence jamie! :D not so much a bad trade! lol

there was so much to hate...
i agree w/ the lucas stuff! he is the BIGGEST BABY right now, and this is what ive decided... how can some1 be a brucaser or leytoner b/c of lucas as of now. i think i started out being brucas, then when the whole triangle blew up, i shipped brooke. so in turn, when lucas becomes a better person and lucas and brooke get back together i fall for that! if that makes sense...
i act. liked the nikki storyline... i feel like she is a new person to stir things up... that's it, and trust me, stir things up she does! as an actor, i never thought emmanuelle a bad one... so that kind of caught me off guard.
aw sadly i agree about karen's parenting skills, or lack there of... (i dont remember seeing her actually punnishing him until he gets into a fight-- and im pretty sure she just like takes his phone and car away)
i LOVE LOVE LOVE peyton and jake!!! their relationship evolves into one of my FAVES!!! i hope yall hang long enough to get to see it! (def by the end of S2!)
naley IS taking the backseat! and i for one get tired of everything revolving around the triangle! naley seems a better relationship and i too wish it/their storylines were more and fuller! agreed about haley too!
but i <3 the sheryl crow stuff! when this epi first came out, you have to remember she was pretty big! and it was cute... but the producers realized this is a not-so-believable scenario and hence the reason we got TRIC!! season one is rough, but it sets stuff up! season 2, imo by far, the BEST!!
lol keith looks kinda dumb! rotfl!
hahhahahhhahahaha!!!! AND IT'S YOUR FREAKIN FATHER!!! --good times!!
great podcast!! cant wait for more!
~manda

Alyssa I'm with you partly on that it's not a betrayal but it is clearly a situation Brooke had every right to be angry about and if it was me and I was still invested in someone emotionally I would choose my words carefully in situations that have to do with that person especially when I already hurt this person with a betrayal because of my lack of consideration (to put it mildly). However Peyton doesnt do that and then out comes her Honesty.when really she should have been honest from jump. an really I already know the responses she was in denial, hiding her feeling to herself for her friend. Save it I've her the song and I know it by heart. Really I don't see how anyone thinks they are friends.

I am new to these podcasts and just started listening two weeks ago so it was great I had so many to listen to...it stinks only having one a week now. But you guys are hilarious and its so entertaining to listen to you guys. I wish I could be podcasting with you. I do agree that the Nathan storyline should be more prominent and that Lucas sucks. Its funny that he is the main character and I cant stand him. He has always been my least favorite. I was curious to see what you guys would say about this episode...it's my least favorite of the first season. The next two eps are def in my top 3 faves of this season so I CANNOT WAIT to hear what you think of them!!

I don't know why I am bothering to explain this, I guess because so many people here are rewriting OTH history. Yes, Peyton hurt Brooke by sneaking around with Lucas, and Brooke was justifiably angry. That was in season one. Anything that happened after that was not a "betrayal". I won't go into detail because Sarah and Mia are not there yet. What happens in later seasons is simple Peyton being honest with Brooke and finally fessing up to her true feelings. That is not betraying a friend.

i have 2 agree bettany is best actress on show and she did not get much of a storyline even in seson 5 she alway been stringest one help even body out given advice talking 2 them seson 6 should show the gang helpen her . lucus and hs good friendship show more of it and just make her story more dramatic life and death the scott bro fighting like seson 1 more drama or just keep her an nathen there best and only reson i watch de show and plez put it back on tuesday i hardle get 2 on monday

Ok I have so much to say about the STD but I won't I'll just wait not to spoil what I think is already spoiled now, but whatever. However I will say Amanda I totally Agree with You about how Peytons Betrayal was an on going thing and in my eyes no longer a mistake.

Great Podcast!! Mia, I think you were reading my mind. :)

I love that you guys call it like it is and don't have favorites (yet!)

I'm still waiting for you guys to pick sides for the Leyton/Brucas face off that you guys mentioned a couple podcasts ago.

I go back an forth on who is more wrong in the situation. Most of the time, I just don't get what the big deal is about Lucas anyway.

I think Peyton needs to take some "friend lessons" because she sucks at it.

I like Jake. Don't really like his or Lucas' hair but I like Jake. Bring him back for season 6!!!

Not one of my favorite episodes, but I don't think the Nikki/Lucas storyline was pointless. You'll see in a few episodes why the writers had them hook up.

I always thought Sheryl Crow just showing up was strange. I remember watching an episode with Mark's commentary about finding a place that they could have bands come and play because not everyone can have their tour bus break down near Karen's Cafe, hence Tric.

Season 1 always bugs me though. The only story line I acutally likes that whole season was Nathan and Haley and they don't really get a whole lot of screen time till later on in the season.

But, I think you guys should do more than 1 OTH podcast a week. It would certainly make my week much, much better!!!

Hey! Ix-nay on the ex-sy ape-tay! Mia and I haven't gotten there yet! I know I want to be able to go into episodes blind, and just give my reaction based on what is happening then and what's gone on in the previous episodes, not on what's going to happen later but hasn't happened yet. I'm sure we'll have plenty to say about the tape when we get there, but until then, let me remain unspoiled, ok?

Thanks!

You guys are awesome.

The tirangle of doom needs to die!!!
If I were Brooke I probably would have let it rip on Peyton.

Lucas is such a jerk this episode. It really isn't about him, which i'm glad he'll realize later.

Haley needs more screentime and I'm glad someone finally said something. Its just like James and Joy not getting nominated for TCA. If it's not in the damn triangle, it's not important. Joy is by far the best actress out of the main 5 and she had the most experience when entering the role.

Anyways, this show was really supposed to be about basketball and the relationships between two brothers, who in fact, only begin to act like brothers when they realized their shared love for Haley. So although Haley is more of a supporter/banwagon character at the moment. She is the heart of the relationship that Lucas and Nathan share and the show is NOTHING without the scotts.

Look regardless of why the sex tape happened it happened. I hate people who are like who they just put that in there to make the LP relationship look better blahblahblah....so what???? Really the writers write what they write they wrote the whole cheating thing in the first season too so what can we just ignore that and pretend like it didn't happen because we don't like that choice? That makes no sense! If it had the "effect" they were going for then it did if it didn't then it didn't regardless it happened it's part of the history of the show and it can be brought up!

Yvette, first of all we are (or at least I am) not taking in what brooke did when I am talking about the Triangle. Second, if you want to bring season 4 into it. Yes, Brooke slept with Nathan. But that was it. She didn't keep the betrayal going. Peyton did. Weather or not you sleep with him. Doesn't matter once you start to keep the betrayal going. If Peyton would have had a relationship behind Brooke's back, then fine, what Brooke did would be worse. But Peyton repeatedly screwed her best friend over for a guy. Brooke did it ONCE.

omg why are people bringing up the sex tape. Everybody know that was brought up in season 4 to justify the LP relationship. Stop bringing that stupid shit up! Peyton's a backstabbing HO at this point. stop bringing up stuff that happens 3 seasons later... gah I swear some peyton fans.

I understand why Brooke is mad and I believe she has every right to be. However, what I dissagree with is the fact that Brooke goes out of her way to make Peyton feel like scum and she continues to do so for a long time knowing full well that she has already done far WORSE to Peyton!!! By this time Brooke has already slept with Peyton's then bf. I want to believe that the reason why Brooke treats her so bad is because this is how she felt she should have been treated after sleeping with Nathan. It's not fair to be mad at someone just because they got caught. We all know that Brooke would have never said anything to Peyton, she was just going to continue in 'her' world. Since she thinks it belongs to her anyway.

Amanda I agree with you totally. Peyton of course did not sleep with Lucas. However betrayal is betrayal and the fact that it was an ongoing thing behind her back make's that so much worse and in my eyes it's not a mistake on their part any more.

I LOVE your podcasts they have me cracking up all the time, and you also have a way of seeing every side, or at least not becoming huge fans of ONE couple or thing, you guys a re neutral so it is SO much fun to listen to you guys.

And before these podcasts I didn't realize what a complete ASS Lucas is. LOL And the Nikki storyline is pretty pointless. It was a big shocker to me, but after that it was kinda stupid. And for those of you who know Rachel, she is way different then Nikki. I thought Rachel had layers maybe not in the beginning but she did later on.

And Alyssa, YES Peyton didn't sleep with Lucas, but in my eyes it doesn't matter. (and it was Lucas who stopped them NOT Peyton) Peyton had an ongoing relationship behind Brooke's back. Yeah, she broke it off but it never should have happened in the first place. Peyton made a mistake. Fine, that I can forgive, but then she kept making the same mistake. That is going to take a little more time to forgive. It doesn't matter weather you slept with him or not. The longer you keep a relationship going behind you friends back. The more you betray your friend.

Yes, Lucas is most to blame for the whole thing. But if I was Brooke I would have the same exact reasoning. Peyton is Brooke's BEST friend, and has been for YEARS. Brooke expects more out of Peyton and should.

I also love the Naley storyline, and the Haley storyline was really stupid, But I am not sure what else they could have done with Nathan without making it boring.

Oh yeah, I forgot... No worries,I'm not crying! Just rolling my eyes=p In a nice way though!
Gotta love my Lucas, flaws and all!

I completely understand your hate of Lucas at this point; he is self absorbed and irritating. Here comes the but: I like his character because of his flaws, they make him human. Perfect one dimensional characters are boring and eventually are written off of shows. Main characters go through many ups and downs, this is but one of Lucas's downs.

I totally agree!

That said, I hated this episode... it seemed to go nowhere and I think they could have introduced Nikki in a much better way.
I don't think Peyton deserves nobody... She made some mistakes but everyone makes mistakes. I don't blame Brooke in the least for being angry though, she has every right to be! Her best friend betrayed her. that is a hard thing to get past!

On a side note, I love Jake, he's a sweetheart and I really wish they'd bring him back!

Poor Keith. Keith drinks because you make fun of his hair!

to melissa, Peyton didn't have sex with Lucas. She snuck around with him and they kissed a lot and they both wanted to go further but they didn't. I'm not condoning what they did but I don't think Peyton "deserves to hav nobody". She ended things when she realized how much she would hurt Brooke. THEN Brooke found out. Please get your facts straight.

As always I enjoy hearing these podcast. It makes me think about my opinions of the earlier seasons differently, because you three bring up storylines or moments that didn't really have an impact on me the first time or third etc. (I own the DVDs)

You are so right about Haley needing more to do. Joy is a phenomenal actress and it's a pity the writers didn't see her talent until the second season. But, I think next season you guys will really see her break out of her shell and become a more well rounded character with problems and issues of her own to face.

On the Deb/Nathan/Dan front, I side with Deb. She made one terrible mistake, but I can only imagine the misery of living with Dan. And she did come back, she realized that Nathan needed her. Dan is a controlling father, brother, and husband; I can not see Nathan being mad at his mom after seeing what she went through being married to him.

Last but not least, I don't agree with what Jackie said about season three's Rachel being like what Nikki is. I think Nikki is hated by pretty much every character and I think all fans, she messed with people only for her benefit. Rachel on the other hand, started out as a pot stirrer but grew into a likeable character.

I loved Brooke this episode. She has every right to be ngry at both Lucas and Peyton. I didn't really realise that i don't really like Lucas this season. As for Peyton and Jake.... so awesome
Oh and Sarah "Unicorn tears and gold dust" could you be any more funny. lol I agree that Nikki is kinda a b***h but she looked good. Jackie I gotta ask why feel sorry for peyton? she brought this upon herself. She's got no one to blame but herself, well she could blame Lucas for being so persistant but I doubt she'll do that. I think they could have done a lot more with the whole emancipation plot line. I would have loved to see Keith's reaction to this and Keith and Dan parents' too.

Ok well First I want to say u guy's are hilarious. I love Nathan and him getting away from Dan and Debb was the best thing he could have done for himself. I love both Debb and Dan.. yes I love Dan.lol....Ducking.... However I always felt like Nathan just needed to be out of that situation. It's a tug of war with those two he will never be totally free because they are his parents but IMO he needed to distance himself from their madness so he could breathe. Nikki.. Nikki geez I don't know what to really say I never liked her. However I did get why she stuck around and respected that. I mean I know she isn't the greatest and she made mistakes but I still respected what she was fighting for. Her with Lucas though just more of his mistakes and assinine behavior. Now on to the Triangle. I just wanted to touch on something you guys will see later on in the next eppy or 2 and I don't want to say to much but I have to say this.Don't worry about Peyton she will have everyone and Brooke will be the outsider which I found Disgusting and totally aggrivating. Lucas and Peyton are the ones who screwed her over but she will be cast aside. Trust me don't feel bad for Peyton she has enough supporters this season. Thank God this behavior towards Brooke didnt carry over into other seasons or I might have needed a barf bag along with some visine for my Red hot eyes.Anyways I loved your comments again and I agree with Brookes anger and most importantly I understand why she is more upset with Peyton. She is supposed to be her back up for situations like this. Not her back stabber. anyways loved you guys again and can't wait for the next one. Make it quick...lol... just kidding ...kinda sorta. ; )

ok thank you guys with the whole haley thing...

She sooo needs her own storyline and not just STUPID little things gosh..

and they should have had some more stuff with nathan and his amancipation , cause thats a big deal who gives a crap that lucas had sex with some girl on a carousel(wich was the DUMBEST place EVER!!!) couldnt they just do it in her car or something, lord...

and nikki seriously cannot act for her life(srry)

and seriously peyton deserves to have NOBODY, she slept with lucas for godsake she should rot alone, for a while, and i hate the fact she stopped the thing she had with lucas after brooke finds out seriously its done u mite as well keep it going...

haley and nathan are the best characters they should have much more screen time:).

ok the triangle mite be a major thing but its dumb its soo draggy and soo stupid, it comes back every friggin season like seriously END IT..

lucas should go with a another girl no peyton, no brooke... (lindsay :)...)

i like the amincipation thng, deb and dan deserve it ...

ok thats it! i love the podcasts guys!!!

Hmmm…. A storyline that comes out of nowhere????? HA! Get ready cause you’re going to get a lot of that throughout the series. Especially when it comes to LP. I just have to say I loved Brooke in this episode. Man her looks could kill, I was loving it. Peyton had me cracking up, did she actually think Brooke was gonna talk to her the next day. I loved when Peyton was all like “Brooke” and Brooke gave her the coldest look I have ever seen in my life, I was LMAO. Then she had the nerve to say throughout the cheating with Lucas she was always Brooke’s friend. I was like what tha?? Brooke Please Slap her. I’m glad you guys see where Brooke’s coming from, especially when she said “Lucas is just guy but we were best friends I thought that meant something”. That statement Brooke made is how I exactly felt about the whole BLP situation.

I’m not gonna even go there with Lucas; he’s just a man whore. But I will say I loved when Brooke slammed the door in his face. Uh I don’t know about Nikki she’s irrelevant to me. She’s a train wreck and all I have to say about the Bar slut is poor Jake.

OK I agree that they should have showed the whole Nathan emancipation storyline more. It was a huge deal, and they basically put it out there like surprise I divorced my parents. I was like what just happened?? I was glad that Nathan did it because they were really driving the poor boy crazy. I do Blame Deb because how could she leave her own son to be raised by Dan. What was Deb thinking, and was she really surprised that Nathan was so screwed up when she came back. But now that I think about it I was 18 when I saw this episode and I think I would have wanted to see the triangle more. Just because it was such a juicy storyline.

I must defend Karen! Now she almost lost Lucas, and I think she had some guilt for leaving him. So if she wanted to take it easy on her son that almost died I think it was fine. Trust me though Karen doesn’t mess around, you’ll see. OH and I do love Keith but he does look dumb, I knew there was something wrong but you guys just cleared it up for me. Keith looks dumb LOL! Well great podcast guys can’t wait for your next one and I have point out that I am a Brucaser. I know it’s a bad time for them right now because Lucas is an ass but I just have to show some love for them because there love was worth waiting for.

Thanks for the podcast!

I too hate Nikki! But I like her storyline, especially in season 2, and especially how it brings Jake & Peyton together!

I don't feel bad for Peyton like I feel bad for Brooke. And I really don't get why Haley, who scolded Lucas an Peyton's behavior, is buddy-buddy with Peyton.

I was the one who said the emancipation should have gotten more airtime (unless thee were others who joined me). I wish I could affect the content of the show as much as these podcasts. It's really great that you guys read and take into account the commenters. I think it was Jackie who said she would have swapped out Sheryl Crowe for emancipation, and I think that's a brilliant idea.

The Nikki "it's not about you" speech, I always thought, was more an attempt to speak about her character as much as Lucas's. She was selfish when she lef Jake and Jenny and didn't turn back. Now I feel like she at least the thought has occurred to her that maybe the world doesn't revolve around her. Nikki in general is a horrible character. But once you get the the boytoy auction, things will become more clear. Emmanuelle Vaugier is better at playing bit more emotional things than so cold and icy. The more the story unfolds, I actually end up feeling a bit bad for her. You guys probably won't, but I guess it's possible.

Thanks for the great podcasts!

I don't really understand how anyone could feel bad for Peyton at this point. It makes me mad that she gets mad at Brooke when Brooke won't forgive her after, like, two days.

Nikki. Eh. The storyline dragged on too long for me. At the begining it was okay, but at some point it needs to stop, kind of like the Lindsey storyline in season 5.

And, I totally agree about the emancapation. It's like, "Oh, I hate my parent. Okay, time to divorce them without even talking to them." And it took up like 5 minutes on the show. Also, Haley does need some storylines.

One last thing before I go. Lucas serisously needs to fall off a cliff or something. All he does is whine and complain and he never gets balmed for anything. It just pisses me off.

I enjoyed this podcast, I enjoy everything you have to say. I am definately not a Nake or Nucas fan. I hate Nikki so much. The whole Nikki and Lucas thing was stupid. I hate Lucas this episode too. Everything that went on with Peyton and Brooke was his fault. He shouldn't have dated Brooke when he was still "in love" with Peyton and he should have broken up with Brooke and given it some time before he moved on to Peyton. He shouldn't have started dating Brooke in the first place because he was clearly not over Peyton and Brooke is Peyton's best friend. If Lucas was going to "hide" with anyone, it shouldn't have been Peyton's best friend. Yea, I have a lot of Lucas hate in the first season and the fifth seasons. So I'm right with ya Sarah! I also agree that Haley should get her own storyline, all she does is talks to Nathan and Lucas and Peyton about their issues. She doesn't have any of her own this first season. It takes her till the second season to get a storyline all her own. Haley is my favorite character in the later seasons but now all she does is help drive the other characters' plots. And I liked Sheryl Crow being in this episode, she's a really good singer. But I do agree she was on the show to sell records. Great podcast guys!
