Supernatural Podcast: "Wendigo"

We're back with another Supernatural podcast! What starts out as a genuinely creepy episode turns into monster-movie fare -- but that doesn't mean "Wendigo's" not worth watching. It's worth it just to see the beginnings of the Winchester relationship and the boys' conflicting attitudes about hunting.

Dodging the Wendigo
In this podcast, Sarah, Mia and I discuss why creature episodes don't always work and why guest stars can be awesome -- or fall flat. There's also much love for the car and Dean's taste in music (but what does Sam like? Speculate). Listen to our Supernatural podcast for "Wendigo" and let us know what you think!

Wow why are people complaining? I don't get it how people could waste their energy getting all worked up because of Wendigo?! I so don't like this episode but your podcast is great.

Of course everyone has the right to their own opinion, however, so do Mia, Sarah and Jackie.

The issue is how the original post was worded and formatted.

The original issue that I had with the early posts complaining/suggesting that the podcasters talk about Sam more is that these posters started yelling at them (by capitalizing words, you are yelling) and by throwing the word "disrespectful" around. As others have said, just because the podcasters talked about Dean more, they weren't "disrespectful" to Sam/SamFans, but those posters made it out to be an issue.

As previously stated, since everyone is allowed their own opinions, including the podcasters, they should be allowed to their opinions without being accused of being "disrespectful."

I'm all for dropping this issue, however, I would suggest that in the future, don't YELL at people BY capitalizing WORDS, because that is YELLING on the INTERNET.

Also, it would be helpful to word comments as opinions, and not accusations.

The above, of course, is just my opinion. :-)

Things have gotten a little heated in the comments! While we welcome debate and discussion here at The Source, let's stay away from getting personal and focus on the show and the podcasts. I think we can all agree that we love Supernatural, regardless of what little differences we may have. Thanks!

People need to calm down and stop insulting other people. Brenna has HER opinion that she likes Sam better. HER opinion. She's not making you have that opinion. And no one was whining.

Brenna was trying to be mature and apologize for inavertedly causing an arguement, and people attacked her. So how about everyone takes a page from her and lets the whole thing go?

People are being mean and inappropriate and it's over a FICTIONAL show, with FICTIONAL people.

relax.

I think people need to stop talking about other people in their comments. Have your own opinion, like your own Winchester brother, whatever. But I think everyone needs to stop putting other commenters names in their comments. It's hurtful, mean, and inappropriate.

Also, stop yelling at people for liking one of the Winchesters more. Serisouly, people are just trying to say sorry and they are being attacked.

Whatever. This arguement is lame and everyone needs to calm down.

Um ... jeez, Brenna -- why don't you just enjoy the podcast and stop all this whining? I think it's pretty disrespectful to Sarah, Mia, and Jackie to TELL them what they should have talked about in their own podcast. No one is saying you can't comment or have an opinion about THE EPISODE, but you were complaining about the people who did the podcast. YOU are telling Sarah, Mia, and Jackie what to do, from your original comment:

"It's perfectly okay to rant about one of the brothers, after all Jensen is VERY handsome and a talented actor, but then **you gotta talk about the other one** !"

Really? They HAVE to? (And they DID, c'mon!) They're doing it for fun! Fans like you are ruining fandom with all this whining. And then throwing in "I'm a HUGE Sam Fan", blah, blah, blah. It's too bad you can't just be a fan of the show as a whole (which includes BOTH Sam and Dean).

*sigh* Anyway, I can't wait until the next podcast! It's fun to revisit the first season.

Sarah, Jackie and Mia, thanks for the great podcast. It's cool to listen to fresh points of view on the show.

I agree with those that say you shouldn't skip Route 666 and especially Bugs because there is important character background and development in both that pays off at the end of the season. That's just my 2 cents on the issue.

But nice job with the podcasts ladies. I'm enjoying them immensely.

In case things got mixed up when you read... I said "Ya know, there had really only been one post about wanting to hear more about Sam in the podcasts then some nasty ones besicly telling her to shut up."

By that I meant that until that girl got jumped on about her comments about Sam there hadn't been any "Samfan" whining. It came after people yelled at her. Had it had just been left, I don't think there would have been any problems!

And I put things in quotes not to be sarcastic but because that is what you do when you are quoting words or phrases used by other people.
Sorry if you misinterpreted it.

Um... jeez. It's the orginal SamFan, Sam Whiner, "starter of all this", or whatever you want to call me.

I just want to say sorry first of all, because I didn't mean to start all this. I'm a HUGE Sam fan and was just a little peeved he wasn't mentioned because, face it, Dean has a larger fanbase and I was just defensive. However, I didn't mean to start an arguement, I merely meant to say I wished they talked more about Sam. I didn't realize suggesting that would cause an uproar.

Well, I'm still sorry about all of this but, can I say one more thing? Ali, I REALLY don't think you should be preaching about being rude. And the only one showing a lack of respect around here is YOU. Also, I said "I respecty your podcasting", so how about you don't twist my words around? And, you say they have their own opinions and thoughts? Then why don't you let me have mine. Thanks.

Again, sorry if I ticked anyone off, and Mia, Sarah, and Jacki, I meant no disrespect. I love your podcasts and hope you didn't get upset about any of this.

I'm still a die-hard Sam fan, but I'll try to tone it down in my comment. :)

Heh. Fandom is a funny place when the rude people aren't to blame, but the people who told them NOT to be rude are. Guess it depends on where your biases lie.

"It doesn't seem like 'Samfans' started this disagreement to me."

Go back and check again. First post whining about how THEY chose to do THEIR podcast? From a Sam fan. Two posts afterward telling her to cut it out, then one a few posts later that's even more vitriolic, again, from a Sam fan. I don't understand your sarcasm quotes... here is how the poster defined herself and her people:

"But, let me tell you, SAM FANS ARE OUT HERE! We are in love with the character of Sam Winchester, and the actor who plays him, and we would apreciate it if we were recognized and respected."

She uses the term Sam Fans (oops, sorry... SAM FANS), and talks about how they're not being recognized or respected because the people who did the podcast didn't conduct it the exact way she would've liked them to have done.

Guess what? This is THEIR podcast. They can talk about whatever the heck they want. It doesn't mean they're showing disrespect to certain fans. It means they have opinions, and thoughts of their own! I know this is hard for the Supernatural fandom to grasp, since we're all brainwashed into certain "correct" ways of speaking about the show, but it's frankly foolish.

If you don't like it, you don't have to listen. Simple as that. But to suggest a lack of RESPECT is being shown is just beyond the pale.

Ya know, there had really only been one post about wanting to hear more about Sam in the podcasts then some nasty ones besicly telling her to shut up.
It doesn't seem like "Samfans" started this disagreement to me. Things got worse after that point.

And sure, they should be able to talk about whatever they like but I don't think it is a problem to make suggestions? Or ask for more on a certain subject? If they don't want to, they can just not do it. Yelling at other fans because you think they are "whining" really isn't helping the situation.

Great job with the podcast! I agree with others who say you should talk about what you want to. The whiners need to chill out!

I disagree about skipping Route 666 or Bugs. Both of those episodes had some GREAT brotherly moments. Sure, the "monsters" were lame, but the information we find out about each brother's past, their feelings about having to lie to others about the family "business", and how they felt about their childhood, make both of those episodes worth watching. Seriously. Just fast forward through scenes that don't involve Dean or Sam and you'll be fine.

And you know, Route 666 = nearly naked Jensen! Just sayin...

Great podcast guys! I really like hearing these newbie POV's too. I've rewatched the episodes so many times that I don't pick up on the same things.
I also had the same "Jensen effect" when I first started watching the show. The "Jared effect" hit me a little later. But they're both wonderful :)
I can't wait till you guys watch Phantom Traveler because that's where I think the show really started figuring itself out too. And once we hit Skin, Home and Asylum- forget about it. There are enough high points in the other episodes to make up for Bugs and Route 666. I usually skip them in my rewatches even though Bugs has some good Weechester points and Route 666 has THE scene.

Good job guys!

Mia, Sarah, Jackie, talk about whatever you want. Don't let these very few rotten apples affect what you talk about, who you talk about and how. Don't feel the need to defend yourselves either, you have nothing to defend.

I've really enjoyed your podcasts precisely because there are 2 "newbie" point of views. It's hard after 3 years to find viewers who are going into with fresh eyes and it's alot of fun to be reminded of what it was like. So don't even read the fandom whiners, they'll just ruin the freshness.

mia - I think you guys should talk about who you want, whether it's Dean, Sam, Jensen, Jared, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the monsters, the guest actors...whomever. It's *your* podcast.

"tina" (or "julie123" or whatever name you're going by now)- Just because Mia, Jackie and Sarah talked more about Dean/Jensen in this episode, does not mean they are being disrespectful to anyone. Besides, did you complain about it being disrespectful when the Pilot podcast mentioned Sam more? No.

Again, people, just chill out.

Mia, Sarah, and Jackie - sorry about all of this.

I can see we've gotten some panties in a bunch so I just want to straighten some things out. Jackie and I are watching this for the first time and aren't Sam OR Dean girls yet. I'm also fairly certain that Sarah is a fan of both of the brothers Winchester. Wendigo seemed to be more of a Dean-heavy episode than Sam, but I'm sure things will change as the episodes go by. Hell, it's possible that we'll spend most of our time talking about the monsters or other plot points than talking solely about the brothers. So, be patient with us and the podcast, we've only seen two episodes!

For the record though, I find both of the boys attractive, but could care less about their looks and more about their characters.

Anna, I don't know whether you're more of a Dean Fan or not. But did you notice the podcast for the pilot was a little more focused on Sam than Dean? Did you also notice that we didn't see any whining back then?

I've got to say in my observation it is always the Sam Fans that start this crap. I agree with "Here We Go Again," it is really tiresome.

Sam will get attention in some episodes and Dean will get attention in others. I don't think Sarah and the girls need to be keeping track of how many times they mention each name or justify talking about one brother rather than the other. God I wish you people would stop all this childish whining, just for a little while.

Please dont do the podcast,s if Dean is all your interested in..It is of no interest to me Jensen is great but his not the only one that makes this show and for me Jared is equal in every department , and it,s disrespectful.Sorry but will not be bothering again you have just dissappointed me ...

One of the reasons I like Wendigo is because of Hayley. This is how the show should write a strong female character - Hayley was all about her brother and nothing was going to stop her from looking for him. Dean recognized that in her and respected her for that attitude.

I also thought that Dean and Hayley (and the actors) had great chemistry. I would love to see Hayley return.

Okay, I know some people are sick of the "SamFan whining" but... I wished you guys talked about him more. And, to defend Brenna, I don't think she was trying to start a DeanFam vs. SamFan argument, just point out that this podcast was lacking in the Sam department.

So, I think everyone, Sam fans AND Dean fan (SamFans weren't trying to start a fight, but you guys almost caused one) need to relax and just enjoy the podcasts. I personally am more of a Dean girl myself, but understand SamFans beeing kinda upset. But, don't worry, I'm sure your time will come.

Great podcast, girls, and can't wait for more, very, very, very, very, very, soon.

I'm so glad you girls are watching Supernatural. I love your One Tree Hill podcasts and I was really excited to find out that you are going to watch season 1 of Supernatural. It's my other favorite show besides One Tree Hill and I totally love you girls and I respect all your opinions. Yes, Jensen is a gorgeous guy, but his acting will blow you away in future episodes. You are watching Dead in the Water next which is one of my favorite episodes of the whole season. I can't wait to hear what Jackie and Mia think of this episode. I'm glad Sarah is a fan so she can help Jackie and Mia get into it. I also am glad you are skipping Bugs and Route 666, those weren't very good episodes. But I do recomend watching the Dean love scene in Route 666. He is just yum!

Great podcast and I have to admit that Jensen captured my attention within the first few episodes of SN. He really is an extremely talented man and the layers he gives to Dean have me loving that character more and more.

While Wendigo isn't in the top five, it is on top of my favorite episodes. We learn quite a bit about both characters. What drives Dean and what drives Sam. Dean's famous quote; "Hunting things, the family business" which defines the show makes Wendigo pretty memorable. The fact that the delivery of that line was perfect makes it quite momorable.

Great podcast and I can't wait to hear more of them. It's fun seeing them through your eyes. It's kind of like seeing them for the first time again.

As for Dean, Jensen's only just getting started, baby. :) All through season 1 I would think, I don't see how he can top this and then a week or two later, he's shock me again. :) I think the first time I really admitted that this show had something special was after watching episode 6, Skin. It's got plotholes but somehow they kind of disappear underneath Jensen's terrific performance.

with the SamFan whining. God it's so predictable and tiresome.

I can hardly wait for the dog-piling to start.

Oh, for pete's sake, Brenna. You're already trying to make it a Dean/DeanFans vs. Sam/SamFans thing.

Sarah, Mia and Jackie are allowed their opinions and to discuss what/who they want. If they choose to discuss more about Dean/Jensen in this podcast, that's their perogative. I'm sure they'll talk about Sam/Jared coming up in another podcast. No one is deliberately leaving out Sam/SamFans.

Please chill and I hope fans don't turn this into another "war of the words" between SamFans and DeanFans.

Good podcast, but one complaint...

WHERE'S ALL THE SAMMT LOVE?!?!

It's perfectly okay to rant about one of the brothers, after all Jensen is VERY handsome and a talented actor, but then you gotta talk about the other one! Sam Winchester is a very interesting character, and Jared Padalecki is stuningly gorgeous and also a great actor. I like Jensen/Dean, and I donb't mind you talking about him, but you need to talk about Sam/Jared too!!!

I know for a fact that there are plenty other Sam fans, and I also know that we tend to get overlooked. Everyone always (at least at first) tends to like Dean more, baceuse he's the charming, funny, handsome brother. But, let me tell you, SAM FANS ARE OUT HERE! We are in love with the character of Sam Winchester, and the actor who plays him, and we would apreciate it if we were recognized and respected. Why? Because everyone should love Sam Winchester. We have angstsy Sam, annoyed-at-Dean Sam, playful Sam (although he isn't often around), evil Sam, and (my personal favorite) naked Sam (check out the episode Hell House!!!)

So, I respect your podcasting and love for Dean Winchester/Jensen Ackles, but, please, acknowladge the Sammy fans and talk about him too.

All that said (sorry about my ramblings) I'm really excited for more Supernatural podcasts! Especially Asylum and Provenance (Which I think are the scariest) and, of course, Hell House because of only in a towel Sam and because that episode is veyr funny and interesting. Podcast more, soon, please!!! And keep us Sammy fans in mind next time you podcast!

Hey! Ryan Adams isnt wimpy! He's got some heavy stuff too!

Sam always seemed like he's into indie stuff, like the mentioned The Shins, or Death Cab, Seth Cohen-ish type of music.

And I doubt Sam got the chance to bring his CDs when Dean came along again in his life and the two hunted again.

Love your podcasts! It always keeps me laughing!

Hi,

thanks for doing the Podcasts. Supernatural probably does cause some level of debate but I must respectfully disagree in that, for me, I really liked Wendigo. It is recognised the monster special effects may not be the greatest but I liked Hayley, I thought she had great chemistry with Dean, and in regards the episode, the guys had said that this was made 3 months after the pilot so they had to get used to each other again and knowing they were going to be working together so solidly.

Dead in the Water is a favourite of mine also.

If you want to talk about our gorgeous Jensen, wait until you see his profile in Salvation & I think Croatoan. Tired, sad, disheartened Dean is quite a sight. But the scenes to perfectly delivered.

We are so lucky to watch these 2 every week and come Season 2, to see the complete turnaround for Jared & the strength, both physical himself, and professionally in his acting and it has just gotten better and better each week.

I forgot to add that it's really interesting to listen to Mia and Jackie's impressions of the characters considering where Sarah and the rest of us know where the characters go.

Also while I agree that John is an ass of a father, I gotta say that JDM was totally awesome in the role.

Finally, ITA Jensen is stunning but as you seem to be discovering, it's his acting that makes Dean such a layered and compelling character.

Your podcasts are going to make this endless hiatus a little more bearable. So thanks for that.

Thanks for doing the SPN podcast guys. It's really fun to re-live those early days of discovering the show and gradually growing to love it beyond reason. LOL!

It will be interesting to see when Mia and Jackie get totally hooked. The first episode that struck me as hey, this show could be more than a guilty pleasure was probably "Skin" despite a few flaws. By the time "Asylum" ended, I was completely hooked.

Sarah, i wouldn't say the fandom's split 50/50 on the John hate/love issue...i feel like a lot more people love John...idk

Wendigo was not one of my faves at all, but stick with it. The show just gets better and better (except for the aforementioned disposable epis), and the character development is the best I've ever seen. Kripke knows exactly what he's doing.

I'm giving John a pass for thinking that he's doing what's right for his boys by teaching them the "family business" with tough love. After Mary died, he was too filled with grief and revenge to be a good Dad, and this is the best that he can do.

And yeah, Jensen shore is purdy.... *thud* But the boy can act, too. Check out the first love-scene in DeVour ;)

I'm pretty sure that Sam's into goth and emo, but I could be wrong lol

Keep up the great work, ladies!

Regarding Laurel's comment about Jensen being so beautiful that sometimes people can overlook how talented he is, you should check out the blog of the writer (Todd Farmer) of Jensen's new move (My Bloody Valentine 3D) at www.wendago.com/journal/:

"And speaking of dreamy…Jensen Ackles. Good lord. No fella should be that good looking. [...] I like Supernatural. I like him in the show. But I just didn’t expect the performances I’ve been seeing. I guess I was prejudging the good looks. [...] His role is one of those challenging roles that can be played vanilla or stunning. It’s a risk for an actor to take on a role like this. [...] Jensen went with stunning. I watched him shoot a scene on night two that gave me goosebumps. Patrick [the director] refers to him as a young Steve McQueen."

It think this was also a case of someone looking at Jensen, primarily seeing him as a pretty boy actor, and then getting blown away by his talent. I would imagine this happens to Jensen quite a lot and that he really has to overcome the stereotype by others who just can't believe that someone that good looking could also be an amazing actor. But we all know better! ;-)

As far as Wendigo, it's not my favorite, but I did have a great appreciation for Dean's sense of duty to stay and to protect the family ("saving people") because that's what drives Dean to be a hunter and to do his job, unlike Sam at this point, who is mostly driven by revenge. And despite Dean's concerns about Sam and about finding his dad, he truly feels that sense of responsibility for other families in danger. I would imagine seeing your mom burning on the ceiling of your baby brother's bedroom when you're 4 years old and then being responsible for carrying him out to safety would do that to a person.

hi OMG I love that you are podcasting
I love to hear people's opinions of this show and what they think about it.
Me I love this show.
Jared and Jensen are amazing actors.
I love the mystery of the show.
and I love that I get answers too.
can't wait for the next one.
oh and whoever are the new chicks who are watching this for the first time you will love this show.

Yesss watch Bugs=p I loved that episode... we see some Sammy backstory... and beleive me... that is usually far and few in between!

Great podcast... the special effects coulda been a bit better, but I still thought this episode was great=)

akie and Mia if you haven't fully fallen for Dean yet, you will when you see Dead in the Water. Jensen himself said that he did not fully understand Dean's motives and character until Dead in the Water. He becomes the Dean we know and love. And girls you will get used to Jensen's beauty and be able to look past it and see his amazing talent. Please don't watch bugs or route 666, they're horrible.

Hey, thanks for another great podcast!

I gotta agree that the monster of the week wasn't really that great. For me, this episode is all about the brothers and having Dean try to get through to Sam and help him see the bigger picture. As tired as I am of the "saving people, hunting things" speech (since it was in basically every recap of season 1), it really is a great scene, and the essence if it is what this show's really all about.

Jensen Ackles is a very beautiful man, in every way. I totally agree that he's an AMAZING actor, and yes, sometimes his good looks can get in the way of people seeing that. I actually had the privilege of seeing him perform live when he was doing A Few Good Men last year, and he just blew me away with his performance. As much as I love this show, it occasionally occurs to me that it might actually be holding Jensen back from getting the recognition that he deserves. A lot of people don't take him seriously because of the network it's on, and it's a shame. Both Jensen and Jared are bound for greatness in the future.

I'm also on the John hate train, but I'll leave that for later when it comes up in more detail, lol.
