Life Lessons From The CW: Sometimes The Bad Guy Is The Most Irresistible

Here at The CW Source, we like to justify our frequent TV viewing so we don't feel quite so bad about our addiction. So we've been telling ourselves that it's not just a guilty pleasure... watching TV can actually be educational! Really. Beginning today, our new weekly feature, Life Lessons, shows us just what we've learned from The CW.

If there's one thing The CW shows have taught us, it's that the bad guy can be the most irresistible. That doesn't mean it's right. It just is! Hey, we can't be the only ones whose hearts go all aflutter when Dan on One Tree Hill shows up. There's something disturbingly alluring about Tree Hill's patriarch. Even though he always returns to his bad-guy ways eventually, he goes through periods of reform (about once a season) that win us over, too.

It's not just One Tree Hill. Think of Chuck on Gossip Girl, who gets us weak in the knees in spite of (because of?) his sinister smirk and his brash one-liners. Lex on Smallville is far from a good guy, but that doesn't mean he strikes out with the ladies. And how could we forget the Devil himself on Reaper? He might be the living embodiment of evil, but he's also the most charming guy on the show -- and who knew that Satan cleans up so nice?

What do you think -- do The CW's bad boys appeal to you, or do you prefer the nice guys like Gossip Girl's Dan, One Tree Hill's Nathan, and Supernatural's Winchesters (okay, that one's a given!)? Tell us what you think in the comments!

Dan? NO!!! Eww!

Nathan..... HELL YES!!!!!

the winchesters have the most character depth i've ever seen and i love how they are constantly changing. sam used to be the one who didn't want to hunt and wanted a normal life, but now he's accepting his destiny and devotes his life to saving others. same with dean though i love his smart alec talk everywhere, he hides everything and yeah, he's just amazing.

the winchesters have an amazing heart for others too.
dean: (from season 1) i figured that our family's so screwed to hell, we should help some others... make things more bearable.

i wouldn't really consider dean and sam as nice guys even though they save lives, constantly, because in the end, they are ultimately human. and they always lie about being cops etc. dean's a badboy to me and he always will be :)

i mean, i just don't like seeing someone like dan humphrey on gossip girl, because he's always the moral and the super great person who does nothing wrong. it just annoys me how there's nothing wrong with him or he never really has a dark secret. i deunno, his character just seems like the nice boy and nothing else.

Dan=Eww. I just highly dislike him in OTH, so naturally he isn't alluring....at all.

Nathan though....he was most attractive to me in Season One, when he was a major bad boy. So yeah, I guess that the bad boy is the most alluring in some situations.(Although I major love Lucas!!)

I don't watch GG or Supernatural, but Lex in Smallville does have that attractive bad boy thing. As does the Devil in Reaper, he really does clean up nice, and is really charming.

Winchesters .. YUM!

Now, they may be considered nice guys because they're ridding the world of evil/scarey things ... but the WAY that they have to do it (and everything that they have been through, how they live life etc) .. well, Sam and Dean definitely have an edge to them too.

So umm .. the BEST kind of nice guys!

Um .. I like them all! LOL

Seriously though, if it weren't for the "bad boys/villains" .. I don't think the "nice guys" would be appreciated nearly as much.

I love the Chuck from Gossip Girl, one of my favorite TV characters ever. I have to say that a "nice guy" like Dan can be a bit tedious. How dense is that guy? And talk about self-centered. I mean, Chuck may be egotistical and smarmy, but he would never say "I am the most understanding guy in the world" with an obnoxious amount of certainty.

Same for OTH, is Lucas supposed to be a "nice guy?" Because I can do without the wishy-washyness. I constantly want to root for Dan (on OTH) every time he shows some compassion. But, damn him! He always goes a little too far for me, sadly. I don't watch the other shows, so no comment there. But, Chuck Bass > the world.

Dan (Humphrey) bugs the crap out of me--just like Lucas.

I think I just like the guys that are "bad" but have an amazing heart--Dean, Chuck and Nathan are the prime examples =)

What's the deal with Chuck? He is nowhere near attractive. Neither is Dan. I love to hate them but that's about it. The Winchester brothers are only hot from the neck down. And Nathan is far from the nice guy. More like the bad guy who keeps trying to be good while repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

I agree with most of the rest though. Lex and the Devil have cartain something going for them. So does Dan Humpfrey...
