Fighting Words: I Watch The Game for Relationship Drama vs. It's All About The Comedy!
Fighting Words is back, and this time we're talking about The Game! Fiercely funny, brave, and heartfelt, this show is more than just a sitcom -- it's also packed with majorly dramatic moments. This week it's just Sarah and me in the ring, since Mia hasn't watched The Game much. We're talking about why we watch -- is it for the comedy or the drama? The show's strong in both areas, but we each think one stands out a bit more. Check out what we've got to see and post your own thoughts in the comments!
Sarah: The Game is a weird hybrid show -- it’s not a straight-up comedy, because we’ve got Melanie and Derwin’s sometimes-soap, often rocky relationship at the center of the show. But it’s not a relationship drama, because characters like Tasha, Kelly, Malik and Jason just can’t stop being laugh-out-loud funny. That’s one of the reasons The Game is such a great show -- it never settles into just one groove.
But if I had to choose between the two, I’d probably go with the comedy, just because I can’t stop loving Tasha Mack. She’s fierce and funny and utterly unstoppable, and I love listening to whatever comes out of her mouth. Granted, she’s not just a quip machine -- she gives good, heartfelt and sometimes tough advice to Mel, Malik and Kelly, and she always keeps her head in the game. But without the funny -- without Tasha’s outrageous lines, Malik’s over-the-top player ways, Kelly’s quips and Jason’s penny-pinching antics, the show just wouldn’t be half as much fun.
Jackie: I'm going to have to disagree with Sarah. There's no denying that The Game is funny -- often hilarious. But even if the writers removed all the jokes, we'd be left with a seriously affecting drama. The characters experience, love, pain and loss (not necessarily in that order). Who could forget the expression on Kelly's face when Jason told her he wasn't attracted to her anymore? Or Mel's shock when she saw Derwin had another woman at his place? Yeah, there are some fantastic one-liners that lighten up the tough moments, but for me, it's all about the real stuff, the relationship drama the plotlines that have us smacking our foreheads, saying, "I've been there!" The Game does those better than most shows on TV, and that's why I watch -- for the ongoing storylines, not the sitcom moments.

OMG .!.
They can not cancel my show "The Game"
I Love watching Pooch Hall (He is FINE .!.) & (I'm His Number 1 Fan)
and also Hosea Chanchez, Tia Mowry, and others .
It has comedy and drama and I love it. It keeps
me wanting to watch it more .
It would be so CRAZY to get rid of "The Game" and I would truly
be disappointed and hurt
if they cancel the show .
I watch "The Game" every single day .
I wait every friday to see
new episodes .
I like other shows on the
CW channel but, I mostly
get on the channel to see
"The Game" .
I saw Season 3 finale (Which was awesome and I loved it)
and I'm ready for a Season 4 .
There has to be at least 4 more New Seasons . All I'm saying is DO NOT GET RID OF "THE GAME" PLEASE .!.
DON'T DO IT CW .!.

I do absolutely love the Tasha Mack one-liners and Malik and Jason keep me rollin on the floor. But it's deep, dramatic moments that keep you coming back. You eventually forget the funny moments. But no one will ever forget the first scene of the season 2 premiere when Melanie found out about Derwin cheating and went off! I was taken aback by that. Or when she came to get her stuff from the apartment and Trey Wiggs and his GIANT security guard busted in. YO, that was crazy dramatic!!! And, when Kelly told Jason that she only married him for his money. These moments will never be forgotten. They're exactly why I and everyone loves this show.

I'm not sure...
Because like you said, I wouldn't watch the show without the 'meat' , the emotional moments. The plot lines definitely keep me hooked and I wouldn't watch this show without it.
On the other hand, life is full of drama, plots, tense moments, and relationships so the entire reason why I watch tv is to loose myself in someone else's life, with someone else's problems. Without the funny? It's just more drama.
To tell the truth? I don't need any more drama. I do need something to laugh at. But, also like you said, without the drama it's just another sitcom.
So, I think the draw of this show is the perfect combination of both and I don't think it's possible to pick a favorite because I don't think I would watch it if they took anything out of the combination.
Thanks for all you guys do and sorry that we fans continually bring the drama!
Thanks for putting up with us!

I love this show! It really engages me with the drama and it is hilarioius at the same time. I have found myself getting teary eyed more than once when watching this show. I wish it was an hour long show instead of just a 1/2 an hour. I enjoy this show because I can totally relate to it. When Derwin cheated on Melanie, I felt like he was cheating on me. Crazy right? Thats how good it is!
