Gossip Girl: Fashion Week Wars!

It's Fashion Week in NYC! Time for a break from Nate, Vanessa and the incestuous royals who've dominated our screens for the past few weeks -- this episode was a return to good, old-fashioned Gossip Girl one-upmanship. Between Blair's relentless plotting, Serena's effortless It Girl status, and Jenny's bratty defiance, the episode had a real Season One flavor. But it got even better than that -- we got scenes like Dan and Chuck bonding and Serena standing up to Blair that we would never have seen a year ago. Let's recap:

Jenny's skipped school for the past two weeks to prepare for Eleanor Waldorf's big fashion show. It's worth it to her, though -- she's living her dream. What she doesn't realize is that she's also crushing Blair's ego just by doing her job. Example #1: Jenny rearranges the seating chart to place Serena and Co. in the front row at Eleanor's request. How dare she! Blair is furious and vows to get back at Jenny. It's easy to do, too -- all she has to do is show up feigning concern for Jenny's "illness" at the Humphrey residence. Once Rufus realizes Jenny's been cutting, he's on the phone with the headmistress trying to get her another chance. Oh, and he's also making Jenny leave work -- now. Education is important, even if Little J only wants to learn about bustles and bows.

Serena's been hanging out with a new socialite pal, Poppy, who wants to attend Eleanor Waldorf's fashion show with Serena. Serena's not so sure -- she and Blair have always sat together backstage. It's a tradition! But Poppy and Lily convince Serena that Blair will be okay with it. Besides, Blair can join S and Poppy at the Marc Jacobs party!

Speaking of Lily, she thinks things are going well with Bart -- rumor has it he's purchasing art she wants. She's a kept woman! But when Bart returns with only a necklace, Lily finds out the art was a cover -- Bart's actually been amassing a file on her past, supposedly to protect the family. And he's got something major on her in an envelope -- something we don't see. What could he know about Lily's past?

As Serena initially predicted, Blair is crushed when she finds out Serena has other plans for the show. She lashes out at Serena, who tells her she came over to invite her out with Poppy and the others. "Oh, that's SO GENEROUS!" screams Blair, in hysterics. She can't be reasoned with. Once at the show, Blair tries to put Serena in back, but Jenny stands up to her -- and Little J ends up with Eleanor's support, much to Blair's chagrin.

In acts of increasing desperation, Blair sends Jenny's team of models home early and then switches dresses on Serena when Jenny gets Serena and her socialite posse to sub last-minute. Serena contemplates not even walking, but Poppy convinces her to -- hey, if Blair's a real friend, she should SUPPORT Serena's endeavors. Serena accepts Poppy's somewhat weak logic and struts down the runway to the flash of a thousand cameras. Jenny sees it and realizes for the first time what Blair's up against. For a moment, Lil' J and Blair actually bond, and Jenny tells Blair it was always B she wanted to befriend, not S. Blair, for once, is speechless.

The touching moment doesn't last, though -- unbeknownst to her, Serena's wearing a non-Waldorf creation on the runway! Even worse, it's Jenny's design. Thanks to Blair's machinations, the show appears to be ruined. Eleanor is furious... until she finds out Andre Leon Talley and other fashion types are raving about the dress. Looks like Jenny saved the show without even meaning to!

But not everyone's thrilled. Serena confronts Blair backstage about her histrionics and says enough is enough -- she's going to be herself, and if Blair can't deal, then too bad. Blair watches Serena leave with Poppy as the paparazzi click away.

Eleanor proposes a toast to Jenny's success... just as Rufus comes in, livid with his truant daughter. He yells at her, but Jenny, as usual, won't listen -- can't he see this is what she wants? She needs a chance to pursue her dreams! Rufus tries to reason with her about the importance of school, but Jenny, as usual, gets the last word and storms out. Won't Rufus ever learn how to control her? We'll have to wait until next week to find out.

Meanwhile, Dan's latest writer mentor tells him he needs to get outside of his comfort zone so he can actually write about something besides whiny Brooklyn boys with girl trouble. Inspired, Dan seeks out Chuck for an evening of debauchery. After some shots and pills, Chuck leaves Dan out on the street, shoeless. But Dan's relentless and tries to hang out again. This time, Chuck confides in Dan about his dad issues -- he's never really experienced his dad's love because Bart blames Chuck for his mom's death in childbirth. Too bad this touching moment can't last -- after the guys end up in jail when Dan throws a punch in Chuck's defense, Chuck accidentally leaves with Dan's bag and finds the Brooklyn boy's writings about a certain "Charlie Trout." So much for that budding friendship.

What did you think of the episode? Did you like the Dan/Chuck scenes? Who's right -- Blair or Serena? Did you want to slap Jenny, or was that just us? Let us know in the comments!

Brilliant episode but I actually hate Serena this episode because even though she's a bitch, we still hate her but we love Blair through all her bitchyness

I don't think I can really choose whose issues are more heart wrenching, because both actors are good enough to make me feel for both of them equally. And I find it sad, how much Blair and Chuck want parents approval and love and then there's Jenny who doesn't appreciate what she has with Rufus, who's a pretty great dad.

Jenny's idea to drop out is idiotic, and I don't really understand the B/L plot. Why would he buy a painting if he wasn't going to give it to her, and why is he holding this info over her head?

This was an amazing episode. Definitely a return to form! Last night made me realize that Chuck is by far the best character on the show and Ed Westwick just might be the most versatile actor in the ensemble. I was disappointed that Chuck and Dan aren't going to continue to bond because it was interesting getting a window into that wounded soul of his -- plus corrupting Dan in the process..
I'm happy for Jenny's success but she's acting even more spoiled than when she flaunted the rules to be in Blair's clique last year. Blair really only has herself (and her rampant insecurity) to blame for pushing Serena to embrace her IT girl status. Perhaps Serena will start to resemble the book version of herself for a while? Oh, Lily needs to divorce Bart already and be with Rufus because Serena & Dan can't make it work anyway.. Chuck & Blair naturally need each other and belong together.. and I for one would love to see the chemistry play out for real between Nate & Serena! Speaking of Nate, why wasn't he in the episode at all?
And why is the CW re-running the season premieres of GG & OTH next monday?? Two weeks is too long to wait after an episode this good!!
