Supernatural Does the Monster Mash

Dean: Dude, you are SO not the one I wanted to show off my leather shorts to.

We're running out of superlatives when it comes to Supernatural! Yet again, Kripke & Co. hit us with an episode full of fabulous chewy goodness, and we couldn't be happier. So many good lines! So much gorgeousness to look at! Fantastically cheesy effects and sound cues! Really, there's nothing we DON'T like. One question, though -- just how many shapeshifters are out there? This is the third one we've run across. Shouldn't they have their own support group by now? Heck, we're thinking there's enough to have a yearly convention!

Sam and Dean head over to Canonsburg, Pennsylvania (or is that Transylvania?) to check out a juicy, straightforward killing -- a witness claims he saw a vampire knock off a comely lass. But when the boys examine the body, the find two neat little punctures on her neck. Since the vamps they know tend to rip out the whole throat, something weird is going on. When they interview the witness, he describes a straight-up creature-feature Dracula-type vampire, complete with cape, widow's peak and Hungarian accent. The boys figure this is the work of your garden variety human nutjob, not a supernatural beastie.

Or is it? Because that night, a young couple is attacked by a werewolf that looks like it stepped out of a frame from a Lon Chaney Jr. movie. Then a guard at the local museum is strangled by a straight-up mummy who rose out of a mysterious sarcophagus -- which the guys discover was purchased from a prop house in Philly. What the heck is going on?

Dean gets an inkling when he goes to meet Jamie, a comely young bar wench who he hopes to re-lose his virginity with. (Long story -- suffice it to say, Dean believes that when he was drawn out of hell and revived in a body without injury, he was "re-hymenated." Hee!) Jamie is menaced by the Dracula wannabe, who called her "Mina" and talks about her being the reincarnation of his last bride. Dean arrived just in time to engage in fisticuffs, which is more difficult than he imagines -- Drac is strong! But Dean manages to divest Drac of his ear (eeeeeeeewwwwwww!) and a part of his wardrobe, which proves to be from the same Philly prop house. And the ear? Well, that feels like the sort of gobbet of flesh the boys had found at various shapeshifter lairs. Now they know what they're dealing with. But who is it?

The guys discover that Ed Brewer, the witness to the first vampire attack, is new in town and is semi-obsessed with Jamie. Plus, he's the projectionist at the old movie theater! Sam goes off to confront him, and discovers him playing Bach's Toccata and Fugue in G (yes, that's the Dracula music from the old movies). Sam approaches with the gun... and Ed flips the rhythm switch on the Casio and breaks out a nice Moroccan beat. Hee! When Sam yanks on Ed's ear ("It's supposed to come off!" "No, it's not!"), he realizes that the shapeshifter is someone else.

Dean and Jamie stay at the bar and get plastered ... er, imbibe a few fortifying drinks to recover from the shock of meeting Dracula. Before they can advance to stage two (drunken nookie), they're interrupted by Lucy, Jamie's fellow bartender. But Lucy is not what she seems -- she's the shapeshifter! She drugs then and takes them to Dracula's lair, where Jamie is given a Mina Harker-esque gown and Dean is dressed in lederhosen (hee!) and bolted to a table like Frankenstein's monster. It seems this shapeshifter has a thing for the classic black-and-white monster flicks, and he decided to act them out, with the twist that in his version, the monsters get the girl and the hero dies. But the others can't seem to stick to the script -- Sam figures out who the shapeshifter is and frees Dean. Jamie wants nothing to do with the murdering psycho shapeshifter, and when Sam and Dean come in to fight him, Jamie ends up grabbing the gun and shooting the 'shifter with silver bullets. He dies -- but at least he has a spiffy, cinematic death scene, complete with final words.

So it's a happy ending all around (for everyone except the 'shifter, and all the dead people) -- Sam and Dean vanquish the beastie, the town is saved, Dean is divested of his troublesome re-virginity, Sam actually consumes some food, and we all find out what movie Dean would want to live in (Porky's 2). Plus, we learn that the boys look even MORE delicious in black-and-white! How is that even possible?

No favorite Sam moment? :(

"Hi there, Hansel."

haha.. Dean in lederhosen had me laughing for a looong time. And the whole totally corny garlic pizza scene. It was so chessey it was hilarious.

Jared seriosuly needs to be given more humor. He's an ace.

One thing bugged me though, Sam would've never seen the Raiders movie if dean WAS IN HELL!!! Do you remember Mystery Spot??? Sam turned into a psycho-demon-killing-people-hating-cold-heartless-hunter with out Dean. And now suddenly he's seeing Indiana Jones? Um, no way. I hope the shows shows what Sam did over the summer, and I hope he was a total bad a*s because dark!Sammy and evil!Sammy are my favorites. :)

After a second viewing, I can officially say that I loved "Monster Movie." It was good, old fashioned, cheesey, but stylish fun!

So many things to love:

Such as how beautiful the boys' looked in B&W. Jensen especially was made for B&W.

The old style credits and intermission were great.

Dracula was amusing, the mummy was creepy and Jamie was an awesome PIP. I liked the chemistry and connection that was organically growing between her and Dean. Also liked that she picked up the weapon and used it instead of just sitting there like a typical horror movie bimbo (Sarah I'm looking at you). The conversation when Dean shared his renewed passion for saving people and hunting things was my favorite moment of the night.

"Rehymenated," hee, I have no words.

Dean in laderhosen was priceless (he looked like a 12 year old boy). I hope that Sam took pictures

Sam's amusement over his brother's antics was so nice to see. It was the first time this season where I saw Sam relax enough to enjoy his brother being back.

Dean came back scarless? Why?

Sam ate! Which I found much more amusing than was probably warrented.

My only complaint was how flippant and nonchalant they are about Dean's trip to hell. It really diminishes the sacrifice and what the brothers endured collectively and individually because of it. It actually makes me question the measure of Sam's feelings of loss.

Sam spent four months becoming Ruby's BFF (possibly with benefits...ew!) working on his powers, claiming the Impala as his own and installing an Ipod dock and now we find out he went to a movie that came out just a couple of weeks after Dean's death. And looks back on it fondly? Really? All of this while Dean was being tortured in horribly unspeakable ways?

Otherwise great episode, A-.

I adored this episode. It was a such loving tribute to the monster movies of yore. Clearly Kripke & Co. know their cultural heritage. The boys were adorable and can I just say that Jensen was stunning in black and white. He really has that old Hollywood star power.

Monster movie, this episode was AWESOME and they boys look SO good in black and white.
So i just made a little Supernatural - Happy Halloween - Monster Movie Mash

HAVE FUN!!

i agree with Anneabell, we totally need a 'favorite sam moment'.

omg...it was the funniest thing:

I was stuyding for my PSATs and one of the words on the flashcards was "maverick" and on the flashcard, this is exactly what I wrote: "Mavericks=Dallas=Jensen=Dean, and Dean's a maverick"

And this was two days before the episode was on--I think I laughed for 5 minutes straight when I heard that line.

Great review and great episode of Supernatural curtesy of Ben "kissing fish" Edlund.

But you got a factoid wrong, CW! Toccatta and Fugue in D Minor (not G) was NEVER played in the original Dracula. (the music there was from Act 2 of Swan Lake) It has never been played for the original black and whites but was in the opeing credits of the 70's version of "Tales from the Crypt" with Joan Collins among others and it was in Disney's "Fantasia". Sorry guys...just a classical musician who's a stickler for getting the music right. :)

I was let down by the lederhosen...they are usually/traditionally shorter than that...would have liked to see a little more of Jensen's bow-legs :) I would have loved to have seen the look on his face when he had to walk form the trailer to the set. :)

Great ep all around! Probably my favourite one yet. A nice repast to the doom and gloom and fear to come.

i have to say i am a sucker for 30's horror movies and i had such a blast watching this episode. it was THE BESTEST!!! dracula riding a scooter, dean all dresssed up like hansel, the look on sam's face when dean tells him he has been rehymenated... seriously, there's no better than that.

The best line - with the best delivery - was Sam saying "This is stupid." I don't know why i laughed for 5 minutes on that one.

Another great episode - this season is knocking me for a loop every episode. Completely unpredictable!

AGREED!the quadrupled gorgeousness these guys were in Black & white..It was insane,i mean, Dean in the empty bar scene with Jamie..Ahh! breathtakin.....
Ahem!..now to rest of episode, it was just such a fun break from the angst filled season it has been so far.It was hysterical.Edlund does have a wicked sense of humour,i mean, the music, the effects, the lederhosen!!nice touch..
Loved Dean's Theory of Revirginity...wild!!!it was also kinda interestin to learn that all his previous scars are gone..I wonder if it means somethin more..

and, good catch on the "Transylvania"thing, wich i agree,it could have been.

Great episode... loved the black and white and the funny lines.

You so need a "favourite Sam moment" poll too! I was itching to vote for when he pulls the dude's ear off haha...

I loved this episode. It was so funny & corny/cheesy - I laughed throughout. And all the old classic B&W movie (& monster movie) touches were just great (really hoping that they do a featurette on the making of this episode for the Season 4 DVD set). Both guys looked awesome in B&W .. but I have to say that Jensen took it an OMFG GORGEOUSNESS level in the scene at the bar (Dean is sitting at the table, it's just him & Jamie, this is before Lucy arrives).
I won't even list all the individual scenes that cracked me up .. but the "new Raiders movie" "re-hymenated" "scootering dracula" and "lederhosen" ... well, really memorable ... in fact, Dean in lederhosen .. adorably cute in a little boy cute kinda way.
Supernatural has been totally rocking this season, and for me this episode was no exception (I've seen that some fans of the show weren't fans of this episode, although most seem to be.).
The timing of this episode was good too .. with all the "drama" that has been going on, this was a good break from it.

lol awesome episode and i thought it was pretty neat especially trying out new styles of filming!

u guys weren't so thrilled about a 3rd shapeshifter? to tell the truth, the only really recurring supernatural being besides demons that i like are vampires. but kripke really want to pay homage to some of the most thrilling tales of all time. i cant really think of another supernatural creature that can do all that. so i believe it was necessary. definitely worth it

I can't believe Sam's 'hi there Hansel' isn't a contender for line of the night, it wiped the floor with any and all other lines in my opinion and got by far the best laughs in my house.

Jared Padalecki needs to be given more one liners, his delivery was perfect.

Dean as a virgin...HILARIOUS! Thursdays are my favourite day of the week.
BTW do you folks know anything about this "SURPRISE" we are suppose to receive at the end of next week's episode? i am completely giddy from the anticipation....

wow great recap...wasn't it the greatest ep! i was scqueeling the whole time out of enjoyment! p.s how do u know all the technical lingo about the movies, Dracula music and " lederhosen " - lol loved this ep..love the podcast!
