Supernatural: Angels and Demons and Wait, What?

Last week, we left off with the boys and Ruby facing off against Castiel and Uriel in a bid to protect Anna. This week, we see the fight. Uriel immediately goes for Ruby, and it's Dean who saves her. We know! Who woulda thunk it? Castiel does the finger-tip knockout trick on Sam (nice skill to have), and he's just about to enter the room where Anna's hiding when the angels are dragged away by some force. It turns out Anna knew some sort of blood spell that can boot angels into the next celestial zip code. How did THAT happen?
The boy aim to find out -- they bring Anna back to Bobby's demon-thwarting safe house and call in Pamela, the psychic who got her eyes melted when they first tried to find Castiel. See, when Anna was a toddler, she went through a phase when she was claiming her father wasn't her REAL father, and that her actual dad was so mad at her that he wanted to kill her. That's a lot for a two-and-a-half-year-old kid to bear! Pamela puts her under and asks Anna to think back -- which causes Anna to panic and throw Dean across the room when he tries to calm her. But when Pamela brings Anna out of the trance, she remembers everything -- she's a fallen angel who disobeyed God's orders and fell to earth.
And this is where our heads started hurting, just from a theological perspective. OK, so demons are fallen humans, and humans are fallen angels? When angels fall, their Grace is ripped out, and that's what makes them human? Kripke and Co. must have had VERY different Sunday school teachers than we did! Anyway, moving on...
Anna decides she needs retrieve her Grace and become an angel again. Sam does some sleuthing and figures out that since Anna literally fell from heaven, she must have looked like a meteor falling to earth. Nine months before she was born, two meteors fell to earth -- one in Ohio, where Anna was born, and one in Kentucky, where a local miracle occurred-- a huge tree grew from acorn to oak in six months in an empty field. That’s what Grace is -- pure creation. The crew arms itself with heavy-duty hex bags that will shield them for all supernatural eyes and heads out to Kentucky. But when they get to the tree, Anna can tell that her Grace is already gone.
And that's where things get messy. Anna starts hearing a broadcast on Radio Free Angel -- turn over the girl, or Dean gets sent back to hell. What to do? Well, obviously, it's time for nookie! Dean and Anna get it on in the back seat of the Metallicar. While they're busy, Ruby sneaks off into the darkness and burns her hex bag, summoning Alastair. This is WAY too big for her, she says -- she'll hand over Anna if Alastair promises to let her, and the Winchesters, live. Alastair summons a couple of demonic minions and commences torturing Ruby, just for the hell of it. Finally, Ruby convinces him to let her go so she can lead them to the fallen angel.
Meanwhile, Uriel appears to Dean in a dream, and reveals that he has Anna’s Grace in a vial around his neck. He swears that they're not bluffing about Hell -- Dean can be replaced, but Anna broke the cardinal angel law by questioning God, and so she's priority number one. Dean agrees to be sent back downstairs -- he'd rather go through Hell (literally) again than give up an innocent! But Uriel has another card to play...
Later, Uriel and Castiel appear at the barn where the boys and Anna are hiding. Dean told him where they were -- because Uriel threatened to kill Sam, and that's the one thing Dean STILL can't let happen. But just as the angels start to make their move on Anna, Alastair and his demonic goons show up. Showdown! Uriel commences face-melting with the minions, while Alastair grabs Castiel and works some demonic mojo. He looks like he's very close to killing our favorite angel when Dean jumps him and drags him off. Anna takes the opportunity to grab her Grace from Uriel and drink it down. She shrieks that it's time for everyone who's NOT angel to duck and cover, which the boys and Ruby do. Alastair does not -- and he gets smote. Then Anna is gone.
Afterwards, we discover that Ruby didn't betray the boys -- it was all part of the plan! They knew they couldn't defeat either angels or demons, but they could distract them by getting them to fight each other... We can't help but think that was one hell of a risky plan -- isn't that how entire cities get leveled? Oh well -- it worked.
But that was nothing compared to the next revelation -- Dean finally opens up about his time in Hell! Alastair had made a crack about how Dean had shown great potential, and Dean explains what he meant. See, he wasn't in Hell for four months -- it was more like forty years. Every single day, he would go through unimaginable tortures until there was nothing left of his body. And every night, they would bring his body back, and the next day, they would do it again. Every day, Alastair would offer to end the torture -- if Dean would just get off the rack and put someone else on it. For 30 years, Dean resisted, and paid the price. But then he gave in -- and he's been ripping himself apart ever since. That's why he doesn't want to talk about Hell. Yes, it's in part because of the horrors he saw and experienced. But it's more about the horror he was afraid he was becoming. "I wish I couldn't feel anything, Sammy," Dean says. “I wish I couldn't feel a damn thing."
So what did you think? Were the plot twists satisfying or confusing? Did this episode provoke more heart-breaking or head-scratching? Talk about it in the comments!

This episode was just awful on so many levels - but mainly due to a poor script, bad direction by a guest director obviously unfamiliar with the show, and poor acting by the main guest star. The love scene in the back of the impala was flat, contrived, and even Jensen Ackles couldn't save it... Anna came off like a spoiled brat instead of an ancient warrior armed with the wisdom of the ages who had a real purpose - and who'd have thought anyone could make Genevieve Cortese look like a good actress? In contrast, she's an excellent addition to the cast. I don't mind Ruby at all anymore. Obviously, Jensen and Jared did their best with a bad script, and their scenes were as wonderful as always. But that's where it ends. From the weird Timothy-Leary-esque acid trip around the Faggot Tree of Grace to the strangely contrived Fifth Element (predictable!) ending, this is one episode I think we could have skipped. I'm going to have a hell of a time getting my husband to watch SPN again after this episode... he feels literally as if his show has insulted his intelligence. Sorry, Kripke. THAT ONE WAS A WASH.

dispite the awkward sex scene, I rather enjoyed this episode. It could be because we got to see Misha more, but I loved it much more than last weeks episode.
As for Alistar, I know he's all evil and such but I really really want him to come back. I know we saw him get blown up by Anna's angel mojo but couldn't we all agree that he was just sent back down to hell and it was just his meatsuit that was destroyed. He is just such a good foil to the brother's Winchester and our two angels: Uriel and Castiel.
About Uriel, At first I didn't much like him, but now I am actually very fond of him. He's a represents a good dicotomy between Himself and Castiel. And really, the actor is just terrific. Can we see more of the Angels please?

Well that was head and shoulders above last wee's episode.
In fact the more I think about it, the more I loved this episode. I loved the connection between Dean and Anna and the implication that she could look past his surface "sins" to see the good man he is at heart. I thought the actors had great chemistry and the love scene was beautiful and tender, even if it was in the backseat of the Impala. Which kind of makes it sacred actually. LOL!
But the last five minutes of this episode were AMAZING. Jensen Ackles is one of the most natural and convincing actors I have ever seen. He was Dean in those moments and I truly believed that he was experiencing every emotion he being expressed by his character. What an incredibly powerful performance.
As others have said, Ackles deserves an Emmy. I have thought this many times in the past but this scene was just something special.
I also loved the reappearance of our angels, Castiel and Uriel. They are great characters played by great actors and I really want to see more of them. I can't wait for the their stories to unfold.
Really the only downside for me this season is Ruby. I feel badly for Jared that Sam is stuck with this dud of a character. But in the larger scheme of things, it's not a big deal since I pretty much skip over that particular storyline anyway.
While "Heaven and Hell" probably won't make my best-of list, some of my favorite moments in the series happened during this episode. It's not a bad way to feel going into the long, long hiatus.

Lainey - I didn't get that Anna was a virgin. She's the one who used "sex" as a trump card in the "it's good to be human!" debate. It was my understanding that she was completely human at this point. And I just can't imagine Dean deflowering an Angel :)

A lot of people have criticised the love scene between Dean and Anna. Of course it's arkward. If you have ever tried stylish, passionate love in the back of a car, it never works because there isn't enough room to spread out. I thought it was nice and true as Anna is a virgin and I thought it was in the context of the location. Sam's love scenes have been hot as they have had the room to throw each other about and such.
Yes, the hand on the window could have been left out though. I thought it showed a nice gentleness about Dean. He was totally into Anna.

As a Jared fan there was nothing i enjoyed about this episode at all.
I am a fan of the brothers primarily and once again we got distance between them, Dean helps Ruby up and leaves Sam on the floor unconcious. WHAT?
Anna was the biggest washout ever and watching her and Dean have sex was like accidently walking in on one's parents, uncomfortable and horrendous. They had no chemistry whatsoever and it was just awful.
I'm not a Jensen fan either so the fact he had no shirt on did nothing at all for me.
I missed Jared who was once again underused.
After last week's brilliance this one was a ridiculous let down and I am so disappointed.
Get the brothers Winchester back on track and give Jared some more meat, he's underused and worth more than this show gives him, way, way more.

Was it me, or was Jared looking a bit tan in the episode..haha
Overall I thought this episode was GREAT! I understand the mixed reactions about Ruby. I wish she was still abit more hostile like in Season 3. I think Katie Cassidy played her well. But the way I see it is that Ruby is different know because she saw the hurt and struggles Sam went through after loosing Dean and understands how much they mean to each other. So if she wishes to stick around at all then she must be somewhat cordial to Dean.
Genevieve is a new actress to me so I can't judge her acting skills just based on this character but she's doing a good job so far. I do wish they would expand her storyline more and get to the point of what she really is there for besides wanting Lillith dead but I guess time will tell.
I was abit confused about Anna being a fallen angel but it makes a lot of sense now. Especially after watching the episode a 2nd time. Angels should fall to earth if they disobey. Its known to be in the bible that hell will one day be earth after God takes his people so maybe that's my theory as to why she was sent here. She fell from her glory.
Sorry to get all biblical. Just my opinion. I will say the sex scene could of been cut but hey they have to give the audience a bit of reaction and a shirtless Jensen works I guess.

reading around various websites, I really don't understand all the hate for this episode
I thought it was great and Jensen Ackles was amazing as always. The final scene was the most heartbreaking moment in SPN history.
This show just gets better and better and now I really can't wait til January.

Hey Sarah, This is kind of unrelated to this post but i was wondering when you girls will start podcasting Supernatural season 2. it's been two weeks.
Back on topic; i liked this episode except for the sex scene. There's just something weird about it all. I didn't like Anna and wanted the angels to kill her. She was way too much trouble than she was worth. Castiel was awesome as always. Even though Uriel is kind of mean, i like that he is different from Castiel which should make the boys appreciate him more.

Hello? are you kidding me? this episode was WAY better than the one before!! (sorry that's not intended to be rude, just exasperated)
first of all, i was soooooo disappointed when castiel only got 30 seconds of screen time - which is not enough! and the end of this episode was way kool, despite my shrieking and screaming when that a hole alastair (don't get me wrong i love him as a villian) almost killed castiel.
and the effects were so kool! kripke really turned it up a notch and honestly it is my favorite episode of season 4 (possible exception for lazarus rising and the great pumpkin episode, which were all awesome too). plus we get to see here that being an angel isn't all that great.
all in all i loved it. don't know why anyone would dislike it. besides maybe some ruby parts... i'm still skeptical about ruby. but i gotta say, pamela made up for it and i love her perky attitude and smart remarks to sam. i kinda hope that ruby doesn't play a main part in the climatic ending of season 4. jared jensen and misha are all i need :)
btw what were you confused about? everything in the ep kinda made sense to me. and the only thing that is kinda hidden is what ruby said sam had to do to get his technique back into shape.

Overall, I was pretty happy with the episode. Jensen completely and totally rocked the last scene - I was all teary. In fact, my eyes welled up with tears at the exact same moment that Sam's first did (he was out of focus, but it was still clearly visible) .. I love that Jared was really listening and "in the moment" etc too.
And earlier in the ep, when Dean was telling Anna that he couldn't talk about what happened .. and got so choked up, so did I. Damn he's good!!!
We did get a lot of information in one episode, but I didn't have a problem with that - sometimes life is like that. And this is Kripke's world, so they get to "pick" and "interpret" what the rules are .. doesn't bother me at all (I'm already suspending disbelief for so much of it anyway).
I have the feeling this was an episode they wanted Bobby in, but Jim Beaver wasn't available. (and, my guess is, they kept some of the stuff - like using Bobby's house and panic room - and then rewrote other parts and used the Pamela character in his place .. just my guess.
By the way, the whole "Hedonism, banana hammock & truck cap" just killed me .. Sam isn't alone with that mental picture problem!!!

Ruby is destroying this show for me. She ruined what should have been two of the most pivotal episodes in the entire series. She drags down every scene she is in and the boys become completely OCC when they are around her. At least last year Dean was still allowed to hate her. This year, she such a special rose petal that all his forgiven and forgotten and she must be loved.
And now Dean is a torturer in Hell and Angels also want to be human to justify your demon with a heart of gold? She has not only destroy Sam's mytharc but is in the process of destroying Dean's.
The only redeeming thing about thing about these two episodes was Jensen's brilliant acting during his confession scene with Sam. Honestly, Jensen is the only reason I continue to watch this show. He is way too good for this show.

I personally don't get all the hate for this episode. Maybe it's because any time a decent female character is put onto this show, the fangirls go batty. ;)
Anyway, loved the ep, cried at the end, 1/15/09 can't come soon enough.

i have to admit i was feeling a little disappointed by both episodes of this 2parter ... well until the final 5 minutes of last nite! i have watched it probably 20 times and i still end with HOLY CRAP :)
i can forgive everything before that (i still think it must be the network that push for that titanic homage, right!??) b/c it ended up bringing us that scene which just sealed that this show is the BEST!

I'm trying to wipe the memory of both these past episodes out of my mind. The only thing I want to remember is the final scene in Heaven and Hell, it was amazing. But otherwise I fear greatly for the direction this show is heading now.

Besides the theological stuff(I don't care about it), this episode was freaking AWESOME. last week was nice but this week's episode simply ROCKED. Kripke tells his story, so why shouldn't angel turn into humans when humans can turn into demons. Seems logical in Kripke's world.
Castiel, Uriel and Alastair were amazing, they had great lines, great scenes and the actors outdid themselves in amazing performances.
I don't care if Lilith comes back, Alastair is the better villain!
Anna was really sweet and the best surprise was that she had been the boss of Castiel and Uriel! ha ha
And only Kripke would pull of that cheesy steamy Titanic window after a great sex scene which is the second on a row! So I think this season really is about pornography as Kripke joked on Comic Con!;)
Everyone who knows Godzilla movies knew what Ruby and Sam were planning the second they said "Godzilla vs Mothra"!
I SIMPLY LOVED THIS EPISODE! IT'S SECOND FAVORITE AFTER LAZARUS RISING!!!!!

I have to agree that this was a downer of an episode. Even the last scene which was acted brilliantly by both J's, was a bit anti-climactic. It just didn't live up to the hype of the build-up.
And as much as I really liked the girl who played Anna; thought she was perfect for the part; she had zero chemistry with Jensen. So that sex scene was just plain awkward and even in the context of the plot, was terribly out of place. Last week's sex scene, though it was hard to watch because of the implications of it, was at least believable and held a lot of passion. For the first time, I actually felt some chemistry between Jared and Genevieve. Jensen and Julie, not so much.
Anyway, I'm a bit surprised that this was supposedly written by Kripke himself and yet it was so bad. Last week's episode was stellar and Sera should be commended.
