Supernatural Convention: Jensen Takes the Stage
OK, folks, get ready for the Jensen report! You know how we gushed about Jared? It’s just the same for Jensen. What a sweetheart! Here are some highlights:
- A fan asked about Jensen’s least favorite episode, and some of the fans in the audience suggested Bugs (it wasn’t me, I swear!). Jensen says he can’t really hate any episode – there’s always something he appreciates about each one. However, he does admit to being less than pleased with In the Beginning. Not because it was a bad episode, but because he worked the whole week while Jared took the time off and went to Hawaii!
- Another fan who’d been waiting to ask a question of Jared, asked just what happened to Sam’s hair. “That’s awesome!” Jensen laughed. It’s the nature of the beast that episode hair gets weird. “I think he just wants to cut it off,” he said – which provoked howls from the fans.
- Jensen was amazed at the fan reaction to Eye of the Tiger – it was just a goof! He did oblige the fans by playing a little air guitar on his leg. Then he grimaced – “I think I pulled a hammy!”
- He said all the bits we see on the gag reel are spontaneous – and that he modeled his cat-in-the-locker scream after a gag-reel scream Jared did on Jus in Bello.
- He thinks he would have gotten along with Dean in high school – but that he would have been the one who pulled Dean out of scrapes and got him out of trouble. And yes, he did know some guys in high school that he taps into for Deanisms.
- The Disco Room from Provenance is the one that made the most impression on him. And all those rooms with the Magic Fingers? They were great, but they involved “some big, sweaty grip” lying under the bed and shaking it!
- Will season five be the end of the show? Jensen said actually, Kripke had envisioned season four being the end. Then the ratings went through the roof this season, and “[Kripke] was like, ‘Aw, crap. I don’t know, I guess I’m going to have to write about robots or something.’”
- A network exec was highly disturbed about the suicidal teddy bear scene, and wanted it cut. Jensen’s reaction – “Have you WATCHED the show? We have people’s eyes bleeding and guts ripped out, and you’re worried about teddy bear stuffing on the wall?”
- A fan from Beijing taught Jensen to say “I love you” in Mandarin. He put it to use through the rest of the session.
- What would he do if he weren’t an actor? He’s thought fisherman (“Maybe not The Deadliest Catch-type fisherman…”), a pro athlete (“although I’m not really pro-sports material”) or… “Stripper!” some fans shouted. “Or a male stripper was my third choice. There’s a career somewhere in there.”
- Favorite flavor of cake? “Chocolate on chocolate. With chocolate in it, and then chocolate sprinkles on top. With a big dish of chocolate on the side.” The fan asking the question thanked him and walked off. “Dark chocolate!” he called after her. SOMEone’s angling for a cake…
- His favorite weapon is a Colt. All the guns are loaded with blanks – which can still be dangerous. That doesn’t stop Jensen and Jared from occasionally shooting each other in the back at random intervals, which Jensen acted out. “That’s what Texas guys do when they’re bored…”

Hi! I flew from Australia to attend the Chicago Con and I've got to tell you that it was even better than last year's Con.
Both Jensen and Jared are so warm and friendly and seem to truly appreciate their fans almost as much as we love them. I don't know how they do it but they make every single fan feel special, including myself, so I have my Gold ticket again for next year!

Jensen Ackles really is a wonderful man. So warm and down-to-earth and really well-mannered. I have met quite a few "stars" through my job and he actually is the real deal and one of the most charming.

Steph - I completely agree with you. I love how Jensen answers questions. I wish there had been more questions about the storylines and about the show and Dean, though. I love listening to Jensen talk about acting, the show and Dean. You can tell he cares so much about them all.

He really is awesome in every way. I really need to get to one of these conventions to experience The Ackles for myself. In the meantime, I really appreciate all the great coverage you guys give Supernatural.

Hey Lauren! I believe that the Supernatural convention is now taking place in New Jersey instead of a Trek convention. At least that is what they said at the con in Chicago. Check www.creationent.com.

I've heard so many great things about Jensen, and how great he was with the fans, and answering questions. I love that he did the "thigh" thing.
Besides being nice and, as many others have said, a total sweetheart, he looked really, really, really good!

You know .. the way this season has been banging along (and them telling us that they're 'throwing the chips all in' etc .. I kept thinking to myself .. even though previously Kripke had said 5 seasons, it really FEELS like this is being executed as if it's the last one. I certainly don't WANT it to be - but that's how it has seemed .. and I've been half-trying to mentally prepare myself "just in case" .. though I really really hope we finish this season as awesome as it has started and then have an equally awesome (or better, if possible) 5th season.

Thanks for the report, it's excellent and makes me love Jensen even more. He is funny, articulate and just totally awesome and I'm so glad that the ratings went up. I would have been heartbroken if this was the last year for Supernatural. Who would have thought that making Dean part of the mytharc and adding lovely badass angels would have such a positive reaction? I love it that Kripke went there.
My love for this gentleman keeps growing everytime I read something new about him. Jensen using Mandarin Chinese after that girl taught him the words is adorkable.

I've read other reports where he talks about his Dad as his inspiration as to getting into acting and the lessons he learned from his parents, and how his "gran's" chocolate pie is his favorite.
I love how Jensen loves his family and friends and remembers what he was taught by his parents. Such a very nice man...and damn, he's gorgeous

FYI - the reference to Texas guys shooting each other in the rear was to him and Jason Manns (and a few other of Jensen's Texas buddies) shooting each other with b-b guns. Jason told the story during his Q and A on Saturday so someone followed up and asked Jensen for his side of the story. [The con truly ROCKED]

Jensen and Jared sound (and not to mention look) absolutely amazing, and intelligent, with good senses of humor. I hope all the fans who got to meet them appreciate the opportunity. I am jealous.

Aw, he's such a sweetie! I like that he would have liked Dean, if he'd known him in school. And how can you not love a man who's a chocoholic? >
Glad to hear the ratings have gotten so good. I've argued for years that having both brothers in the mytharc--and not just Sam--could only boost the story arc and move it along both more smoothly and more consistently, instead of having it creep along at a snail's pace. (And adding a hot angel to interact with Dean hasn't hurt any either! LOL)

I loved the "Dark chocolate" part and pulling a "hammy" bit and the Mandarin "I love you" bit. Hee.
I do hate that the con organizers don't have like a 5 minute break so that questions for the previous actor don't get asked to the one that's up on stage.

Awesome, just awesome! I just love these two guys! The teddy bear thing -- so typical of the way network suits seem to think! Thrilled to hear Jensen loves dark chocolate, too! Sure hope he's kidding about Kripke ending it after this season. I've been counting on 5!
