Supernatural Podcast: "Devil's Trap"
We've reached the end of season one of Supernatural and we're still recovering from the utter fabulousness -- the utter Kripkeosity of it all. There was so much to love: Meg returns! Bobby is introduced! Evil John! Blood, guts and terror! And let's not forget -- the mother of all Kripkes!
Mia and I debate which Winchester boy seems more prone to remorse, talk about the the ethics of dealing with people possessed by demons (although alas, demons don't see any ethical problems in possessing us), dissect the saddest scene of the season, and revel in that quintessential Kripke closing. Plus, find out when our DVD started to act like it was possessed -- what could it mean?
We also talk about a whole bunch of fan-made art -- a specific comic from The Dean Show Slumber Party, Big Pink's Bear Hunt comics, and the fabulous Plastic!Winchester Theater. If you haven't seen these, check them out!
Listen to our Supernatural podcast for "Devil's Trap" and let us know what you think in the comments!

I don't dislike John, in fact, I love me some Papa Winchester, but only because he's so much fun to watch, not because hes a great father (pshh, yeah right!)
And about John loving Sam more, I really don't think that's true. Maybe Dean thinks it's true, but Sam definitely doesn't. Sam thinks Dean and John are always more alike and more focused on hunting, while he wanted normal. And John always liked Dean more because he was the good son, the good soldier, where Sam wasn't. And remember, John told Sam to leave and never come back, so I REALLY don't think Sam thinks John loves him more. And I don't think John loves Sam more.
And, actually, I also think Sam is muh more the gray area. With Dean, it's easier to believe eveyrhting is right or wrong. Killing evil: right. Sam, however, killing is a gray area in itself. I don't think Sam's a better person than Dean, he just sees things differently.
But, hey, I might be partial because I love Sammy. I love Dean too, but Sammy has a special place in my Supernatural-crazed heart just because Dean is so obviously awesome and lovable and easy to like more, but Sam is such the under dog and such a cutie and I just want to hug him. =]
Anyway, great podcast, and I wish you could do season 4 or season 2 podcasts, but I understand how busy you are. =[ Maybe when OTH and Gossip Girl take their winter break?

I am curious about one thing, how can Mia wait for months, when you guys own a DVD set?i mean, when we watched it the first around,we had no choice but to endure those torturous months, but she is more privileged than us.Isnt she a least bit tempted to know what lies ahead, especially when she has already heard how it is filled with all kinds of awesome.
No pressure to continue podcast, just expressing my curiousity ;)

The music is all the same on the DVDs it's just for some reason all the classic rock songs were taken out of the first season when it was posted on iTunes. The ending was much better with Bad Moon Rising playing.

The cliffhanger was just brutal,it was the mother of all cliffhangers.. Kripke has been known to drive the fans crazy, but this one just pushed us over the edge.but the funny thing is,this was not the only time he did this,u know what i mean..
I rememeber,i continued to stare at the TV even after the credits were gone saying, there has to more, this cant be it..rite!!
Oh& thanx deejay for bringin up the "baby"theory, that is exactly what i was gonna say.John was just very much protective of Sam coz he was his baby,& he grew up without his mother around.besides,it was very much evident that both of them felt, that John loved the other one more,so IMO,it was the most realistic representation of sibling psyche.
&speakin of John,he was indeed very convincing as YED,but i dont think he was telling the truth there,he was just playing with Dean's inner emotional insecurities& his irrational fear of being inadequate.
I know John so far hasnt come off well, but i remember how it all changed for me,when i watched the first ep of season 2..i so wish u guys get into that soon..
I m gonna miss these podcasts :( God!!i love this show!!

You ladies did a great job on the Season One podcasts! Wish you could start Season Two sooner, but if Mia can wait to resolve the cliffhanger, guess I can, too. Hope Jackie can join you next round.
I love John, but he was a tough drill sergeant for his sons. I figure he had to be in order to make sure they were prepared for the future. However, it does make him a little hard to take on occasion.
And I'm pretty sure Emma doesn't speak for the majority of SPN fans, so I hope you don't take it that way. I'm a major fan, and I've really enjoyed watching the show through new eyes!

God I love your little evil John-comments Sarah. I like John but your hate for John is so entertaining.
The end is so cruel and perfect and wonderful but I'm still glad that I started watching SPN during season 3, so I didn't have to suffer that cliffhanger, I just switched to the next dvd box 2. : )
Bobby is just great!
I still wish they had not killed Meg like Kim Manners suggested. She is so great at being evil!
John as YED is just amazing! I always get the shivers watching Jeffrey's performance!
Thanks for a great podcast season 1, it 's the only SPN podcast I care about so I understand that you have a lot of series which you podcast regularly but I hope that you continue the SPN podcast very soon. Maybe you could do 2 episodes per podcast in the summerbreak.
Do you know the little Encyclopedia of Weirdness comics on livejouernal?they are so great!!!

emma, wonderful attitude you got going on there. Yeah, that's the way to show how welcoming and open-minded SPN fans are. Go around name-calling and insulting anyone who doesn't share your exact opinion. Great job!
Well, as a long-time Supernatural fan, and part of the SPN fan community, I have loved these podcasts. It makes me sad to think we won't get another one until the summer. But I understand how real life can be.
Also, I don't think John favored Sam. I think he did what a lot of parents do. They give a lot of attention to "the baby," place a lot of emphasis and importance on protecting "the baby." This is magnified when "the baby" is, for example, suffering an illness, or (in Sam's case) in constant danger. And, in those cases, the parents sort of start thinking as the eldest as mini-adults who can handle adult responsibilities and take care of themselves. And this attitude never quite goes away, even when "the baby" is in his 20s and over 6 feet tall.
Having gone through this, I know it's very easy to start thinking "the baby" is the favorite because they get so much attention, and so much emphasis is placed on watching out for them and taking care of them. It doesn't mean it's true though, and it's all a matter of perspective. Look at the Winchesters. Sam has always thought Dean was the favorite.
Yes, demons will tell the truth when it will hurt. But they do lie. And, in this case, the old YED was using Dean's fears and insecurities to attack him.

Woah... Emma... you are kinda nasty there.
One thing, Sarah... you call Sam the black and White one and Dean the grey area one... I totally disagree.
Dean sees things as either right or wrong while Sam sees things as, well if it does a greater good... then let's go with it.
For example: Dean feeling bad about killing people for Sam and John where Sam didn't because he was saving his brother!
We see more of this in later seasons.
Great episode... loved it... but such a nasty ending. I was lucky to watch the episodes at the end of July that year, didn't finish til mid August so I didn't have to wait quite as long.

i loved the john posessed by azazel. loved the smartass attitude like when he said "two wrongs don't make a right."
i will have to agree with emma about the dean and possessed john scene where he said sam was clearly his fav. i really don't believe that john loves sam more than dean. heck, he sold his soul for him! went to hell, gave up the colt and his hopes of killing the yellow eyed demon. i'm pretty sure azazel was just twisting around dean's vulnerability when it comes to his father. besides azazel lied again in all hell breaks loose p2, apparently sam did come back - just sam took steps to be more like dean.
well i really enjoyed your podcast, but was REALLY hoping you guys would probably get to season 2. i understand if you don't want to start during season 4 because mia didn't see the episodes in between which could make a lot of things more clear. buuuut i am wondering then, are you still continuing with teh gossip girl podcasts and oth ones? if you are, then i think setting aside an hour to watch and podcast shouldn't be a big problem. but yeah, i know i shouldn't urge u guys like this, BUT please understand there are lot of loyal supernatural fans here who love to hear podcasts etc.

Hey, Emma -- Mia is unspoiled -- she only knows what happened in Season 1, and is giving her impressions based on that. I am a notorious John detractor, so feel free to call me an idiot, and give me compelling evidence as to why I'm wrong, but ONLY based on what we've seen in the episodes we're talking about and that have come before. (Also, I don't count the comic as canon, so that's out, too. )
As for Season 2 or season 4 podcasts -- we'd love to do them, but alas, our Corporate Overlords tend to want us to get our other work done in addition to hanging out and talking about our favorite shows. We keep arguing that this IS our job, but so far, no luck.
We do plan to podcast season 2 in the summer, however. If we can make it sooner, rest assured, we'll let you know!

Hi girls, I've been listening to your podcasts from the begining and loving them. I can see Mia is now completly a fan of the supernatural world and I'm really happy about it, good job Sarah bringing her into the show (and Jackie too, tell her we miss her).
I wish you could start season 2 next week, but I understand why you can't.
Any plans to podcast till S4? I know its to soon to ask, but its so awesome and yours is the only podcast I care to listen
Bye for now
Kisses

actually, there was quite a number of defective DVDs. It started skipping around when John got possessed right? yeah, so you might wanna buy a new DVD set.
please tell me you guys are going to podcast season 2!

How dare you guys say John doesnt care or think about Dean? Um, he died, just to SAVE Dean. Not only died, went to hell.
You do not know what the demon was saying was true or just screwing with their greatest insecurities.
Man, you guys miss the whole theme of the show and really suck all that is good out of it. Stick to your superficial remarks, better yet, stick to superficial shows... things you know... now I know why you 3 are so hated in the SPN communties.
