Supernatural: Ruby Explained and Anna Revealed

Even in a church attic, the Winchesters can't escape the fangirls
Supernatural hit us with another whammy of an episode last night -- and another instance of "To Be Continued." Curses! Just when things were getting good even better utterly amazing! We had stellar work from both boys, as usual, but we've got to give a special shout-out to Jared for the way he showed Sam's descent into drink-addled grief in the flashbacks -- you could just see how devastated he was. Fantastic!

Dean is appalled to see Ruby again, and he makes his displeasure known. Ruby ignores him-- she's got news of a girl who escaped from a mental institution, and some big-gun demons are after her. There's a reason for that: Anna, the girl, can eavesdrop on angels. She knows about the war, the potential apocalypse, Lilith and the 66 seals -- the whole shebang. And from what she's been hearing ... well, things aren't good. There are more than 600 seals, she says to her shrink. Lilith only needs to break 66 of them. "That's why it's nearly impossible to stop her. That's why the angles are losing. That's why we're all going to die." Yipe!

When a demon possesses an orderly and tries to take Anna, something seriously weird happens -- a chest of drawers slides across the room at great speed and knows him out. Did Anna do that? However it happened, she escaped, and she scampered to her church to hide out.

They boys come looking for her, and find her parents slaughtered -- the demons had already gotten to them. When the boys find her in her church, she's initially timid, but when she hears that it's Sam and Dean, she comes out of hiding. "Sam? Not Sam Winchester," she asks. Sam assents, confused. "And you're Dean? The Dean?" The boys are confused. "The angels talk about you," she tells them. "Some of them think you can save us," she says to Dean. "And some of them don't like you at all," she says to Sam. Yipe!

Before they can delve into Radio Free Angel too much, Ruby appears -- a Big Bad is on their tail! When a statue of the Virgin Mary starts weeping blood, it's obvious he's arrived. Sam tries to work his mind mojo on the demon, but it has no effect. Dean jumps him, and the demon gets friendly -- don't you recognize me? It's a high-level badass demon who spent some quality time with Dean in hell. While Sam and Dean cleverly distract Alastair by allowing him to beat the crap out of them, Ruby grabs Anna and suns. Sam grabs the knife and stabs Alastair in the heart -- but even THAT doesn't kill him. Uh-oh. The guys dive out a church window to escape.

Back at the hotel, Dean demands to know where Ruby is, what she's doing with Anna, and why the hell Sam trusts her. Sam finally tells the story. He tried to trade his soul to a crossroads demon, but the demon wouldn't take him. Then he arrived home one night and got jumped by a couple of demons. One of them was Ruby, sent by Lilith to kill him -- but she kills her compatriot instead. When Sam finds out she still can't help with Dean, he kicks her out of the car -- and out of the body she's riding. So Ruby finds a comatose girl who is in the process of flatlining and takes her. There was no soul at home in this particular meat suit, so Sam can't object. She wants to train Sam to take out Lilith. It doesn't go well. Not even after she and Sam engage in hot demonic nookie (which makes Dean a little queasy). Then Sam gets word that Lilith is in town, and he decides it's time to take her out. Ruby objects -- he's not ready! She figures out this is a suicide mission -- Sam wants to die. He doesn't want to live without his brother. (These Winchester boys!) Sam finds a Lilith-like girl, but it's a trap. Ruby saves him, and that's when Sam decides he really can trust her.

Back in the present, Ruby momentarily possesses a hotel maid to tell the guys where she's hiding Anna. They find her, but something is following close behind. It's Castiel and Uriel. They're there to kill Anna. Why? To be continued. Gah!

This was one of the best yet! Not in the funny category of course, but you get the point! I'm relieved that we now know how Sam got through the summer. Yeah I know it sucks that we havent seen every tiny bits, but at least we got to see how he was saved! And though Ive never was a Ruby fan, Im just glad that she was there helping him through his rough times! The season is still young and there's lots left to learn and find out!

Awesome episode! I cannot wait to see what's coming after the "To Be Continued"!!!

yeah i love kripke for doing something different than sam falling in love with a normal girl. i didn't really like ruby but its not like i was about to throw up when they did it, cuz jared's body was just too hot to ignore.

there are mixed feelings about this episode mostly because of a not so good track record from ruby. if anything, kripke did show that sam was devastated. especially when he called on a crossroads demon and tried to switch places. then the drunkenness.

also, he did explain why ruby was in that body she was, which was kool. i mean, i thought that demons kinda have an MO, you know, possessing people that look similar or act similar to what they were.

whatever, i loved the episode, but i am REALLY looking forward to the next one.

(shit, i hope castiel doesn't die!! PLEASE DON't KRIPKE!! i read somewhere that he might)

This was an awesome episode! I loved how Jared portrayed how tore up Sam was after Dean had died- he was obviously so devastated. Also I think Ruby has fallen in love with Sam, when at first she was just using him to kill Lilith. This wasn't just a sex scene, it was integral to the story and I applaud Kripke for having the strength to go forward with his story in face of some fan's outrage.

Did anyone notice when Sam had his shirt off that there was no tattoo?

I TRY NOT TO ANALYZE THE SHOW TOO MUCH. I JUST ENJOY IT FOR WHAT IT IS, ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS ON TELEVISION.

So let me get this straight. Sam did a little drinking, tried to save Dean ONCE, had nasty sex with Ruby, recieved a pep talk from her than he was over Dean's death before the month was out. Then it was off to see Indiana Jones. Seriously?

I was expecting to get a 4 month backstory on Sam's time without Dean that would cause me to be sympathetic and would explain why Sam has been so cold and somewhat uncaring toward Dean. Instead I got a boring hour of "isn't Ruby awesome?" Yuck. What a wasted opportunity.

Jared did a good job in the flashback scenes, but sucked during his retelling of the tale scene. No angst, emotion, regret or shame was displayed in this performance. This might have salvaged some of this episode for me if he had.

No matter how hard the writers try to justify it, I will never be okay with Sam screwing a stolen dead/comatose body inhabited by a demon. Necrophilia is sick, depraved and wrong. The sex scene was vomit inducing. I had to beg my dinner to stay down.

After Ruby jerked them around last year, witheld the truth of who Dean's contract owner was, botched the final plan to save Dean (by alerting the demons of their presence) and telling Dean that she wished she could see "the flesh sizzle off his bones" as well as "hear him scream" (in hell), Sam should want nothing to do with her. I already hated Ruby (she's a useless, annoying character) but now I hate Sam too.

I am also sick of Dean being such a Sam apologist. Even though he was properly grossed out by the Sam/Ruby sex revelation, he didn't seem to be as morally outraged and disgusted by it as I would have liked.

Dean excuses everything Sam does. Even when he does call Sam on his crap, he ends up taking it back and even apologizes ("Metamorphises" I'm looking at you). Dean needs to stop indulging that spoiled manbaby and allow himself to be appalled by Sam's actions.

Overall, I hated this episode. I would rather watch "Route 666", "No Exit" and "Red Sky" on a loop for 48 hours straight than lay on this one ever again!!!!

Ugh... What is wrong with people? They love just everything to be clean cut and typical.

Congrats Kripke for being awesome. Ruby/Sam was the weirdest, most complicated thing you could do. Thanks for having heart and plunging into the madness.

I watch TV to be entertained and SR relationship is mind blowing. I myself find it strange and psychotic but this is Supernatural, not One Tree Hill. I watch this show for strange.

This episode is perfection! I love every part of it, even the Sam/Ruby sex! I'm utterly happy with the way things are turning out!

I thought it was a great episode... one of the best of the season. I also thought that the Ruby/Sam interactions were well acted and Jared knocked the emotions of losing Dean right out the the park. I like Ruby and I don't mind at all if she and Sam get together.

I am so eager for next week!

I loved "The Dean?" .. Jensen's facial expression when he agreed that he was THE Dean.

Jensen was great as always (and the whole "awkward - apology/thank you .. very well done!). Jared was all kinds of awesome in this eppy - and he was in the forefront, so a lot was on him - he owned it.

I do want to clarify one thing though .. Sam summoning the CRD and trying to save himself, was from nearer the beginning of the episode - while Sam & Dean were first heading off to find Anna. And, so far as I can tell, that was just Sam flashing back to it in his mind. The guys were quiet/not talking both before and afterwards. So I don't think he shared it "outloud" .. I don't think Dean knows that specifically. Not that it matters - in the premiere ep, Sam told Dean he tried everything and no one would deal with him, nothing worked etc .. and Dean knows from the motel room scene the rest of how messed up (in an awful frame of mind) Sam became...

Absolutely outstanding episode! Jared was amazing and showed what he can do given the right material....He simply owned this episode!

Loved it. Jared nailed each and every scene regardless of if the writers were correct or incorrect on it. He was AMAZING.

I hated this episode so much, I could barely even watch it after the sex started. But my issues with the episode have nothing to do with Ruby's body, whatever. They have to do with: Ruby is the biggest Mary Sue ever.

I'm so upset.

I personally thought this ep was made of awesome. Oh, and she possessed the girl after she died and left her body :D

I was surprised by how Dean didn't seem to care that Sam slept with Ruby...that just didn't sit right with me. I figured he would of been so pissed no matter how far gone/depressed Sam really was.

Ruby waited until the girl flatlined and jumped in. Her soul had passed on. (Heaven supposedly) The girl had only been dead for seconds. If Ruby were to leave the body then the body itself would be dead. Hope that helped. I can honestly say that this was not one of my favorite episodes. I could have done without the whole sex scene. It was not necessary in my opinion. And there just wasn't that much humor, no smart arse comments. It just didn't do it for me. Oh and before anyone asks about the flashback being 6 months ago. Dean was in HELL for 4 months and he has been out for 2 months hence the 6 month flashback. People on another site couldn't figure it out.

I couldn't even watch the end of the episode. Turned it off and walked away as soon as they kissed.

I'm so disappointed that Kripke went there that I think I'm done with the show for good now.

The girl Ruby is possessing is dead. She died right before Ruby took her over. Hence there's no soul in there, just Ruby. Which makes it her body.

Cool episode. This show just keeps getting better and better.

Bring on next week!

Let me get this straight. Ruby is possessing some comatose girl for a long time now, I assume. Where is the girl's soul, then? Is she still comatose? Or did she die in the meantime? Has her soul moved on or is it trapped inside some place's doors like Dean was on In My Time of Dying? And if she is, will she ever be fred?

I'm just... disappointed.
