Gossip Girl: Chuck's Grief, Blair's Love, and Lily's Secret

Chuck and Blair, Blair and Chuck. Sob!
Even Gossip Girl, the queen of snark, must have had trouble staying dry-eyed during last night's emotional episode. Bart's death sent shock waves running through the Upper East Side: Lily's secret teetered on the verge of exposure while Chuck lashed at out everyone in his path, only to finally let Blair in at the very end. Plus, the usual Humphrey/Van der Woodsen relationships almost blossomed but faltered, while Eleanor and Cyrus tied the knot in an impromptu at-home ceremony.

Let's start with Chuck. First he meets with Bart's P.I. to find out what he has on Lily. It's pretty big, but the secret will only go to the highest bidder. Chuck skulks out of the bar with plenty of liquor to spare...

Lily and Rufus meet up in the park before the funeral, and she tells him that Bart left her a voicemail before he died, but she's too afraid to listen. Rufus assures her he's there for her, now, in six months... forever. Little do they know they're being watched by Cece. She's back in town.

Lily finally listens to the voicemail. Bart tells her they need to talk about the real reason she was in that hospital in France.

Then the Bass boy goes on a drunken rampage at his father's funeral, blaming first Dan (the article) and then Lily (he calls her a whore!) for his father's death. Blair and Nate try to restrain Chuck, but he cannot be stopped.

Meanwhile, Dan and Aaron are subtly competing for Serena's affection... at a funeral. Yeah, it's awkward. It doesn't last long, though, because once Chuck screams at him, Dan ends up leaving the church.

Rufus is at home, idly strumming his guitar and channeling the '90s, when Dan comes home and denies his feelings for Serena. Rufus denies his feelings for Lily right back. See, neither of the Humphrey men have feelings for the Van der Woodsen women! Really! Seriously!

At the house gathering after the funeral, Cyrus finds the whole scene inspiring. He wants to get married -- tomorrow. Life is so short! There's so much uncertainty! They should tie the knot at home. Blair's not sold, but Eleanor likes the idea. And Jenny pops up for one of her two scenes of the episode to offer to make Eleanor's wedding dress (seriously, not so realistic, but whatever).

Aaron presents Serena with a plane ticket to Buenos Aires. Great timing, dude. Her stepfather just died, her stepbrother is on a rampage, and her mother is conflicted, to say the least. But Aaron, as usual, fails to rise to Great Boyfriend status and pushes the trip on Serena. She agrees to consider it.

Chuck goes digging around in Bart's things and Lily confronts him after Cece encourages her. The confrontation doesn't go well, to say the least. First Chuck vaguely threatens Lily about her big secret; then he blames her for his father's death and tells her Bart's blood is on her hands. She slaps him, then gasps. Chuck vows that once he gets Bart's money, she'll never see him again.

He doesn't stop there -- even poor Eric isn't immune. On his way out of the house, Chuck tells him they're not related; he doesn't consider him a brother. Ouch. Blair won't be deterred, though -- she follows him to his car and tells him she's there for him no matter what. Chuck wants to know why. And then Blair SAYS IT. "Because I love you." Chuck swallows hard and says... "Well, that's too bad." And he leaves her there on the curb. Blair is crushed, understandably. She ends up sobbing in Cyrus's arms in a truly touching scene that Eleanor observes happily. At last, Blair has a caring parental figure that doesn't criticize or abandon her!

Blah blah blah, Dan and Serena. Enough back and forth with these two! Basically, Dan kind of tells Serena that he might want to get back together, and maybe she shouldn't go to Buenos Aires. Serena kind of tells him she wants to know how he feels. But no one will really say how he/she feels, so it's kind of a dead-end conversation.

Cece gets Lily to confess that she loves Rufus... just as Serena gets home from breakfast. Awkward! The Van der Woodsen women have a reprise of last year's conversation. If Lily and Rufus are going to be together, then Serena and Dan can't. Why they can't BOTH give it a try at the same time is beyond us; we think they could get over it. Excited, Lily calls Rufus and invites him to Cornwall for a romantic getaway.

Chuck gets the scoop on Lily's secret and threatens her with it, but instead of fighting back, Lily urges him to not block out the people who love him. Conflicted, Chuck ends up burning the information, whatever it is.

Emboldened by a chat with Jenny, Dan decides to ask Serena about giving it another go. But she's decided to move forward with Aaron. They're going to Buenos Aires. Crushed, Dan leaves.

Cyrus and Eleanor tie the knot in a charming ceremony, but as it ends, Dorota leads Blair to her bedroom. A broken, crushed Chuck awaits her on the edge of the bed. She takes one look at him and folds him into her arms in a one-sided hug. Chuck's so destroyed he can hardly respond, but he finally does half-hug her back. He ends up spending the night spooning with her, but when Blair wakes up in the morning, only a note waits for her on the pillow. Chuck tells her that she deserves better and not to come looking for him.

Aaron and Serena head to the airport. There's banter about a neck pillow. We think the relationship doesn't bode well if Serena is more excited about using the neck pillow than resting her head on Aaron's shoulder, but she didn't ask us... Anyway, Dan calls Serena to discuss their parents' love drama, but Serena decides not to answer because Aaron's falling in love with her! Yeah, it's hard to believe because the guy just will not emote, but that's what he said, so we'll have to take his word for it. So Serena decides to just focus on their relationship for now. She ignores Dan's call.

About Lily's secret -- Chuck's silence doesn't matter. Cece goes to Rufus and tells him anyway! And now he wants no part in the getaway with Lily. Instead, he asks her if it's a girl or a boy. Did Lily abort their lovechild years ago, or (what we're leaning towards) did she have their baby in France and never tell him?

What did you think of this episode? Are you feeling Chuck's pain? Are you sick of the Humphrey/Van der Woodsen back-and-forth? And what's Lily's real secret? Tell us all in the comments!

This episode wasnt my favorite although the best thing was there was more Eric..who doesnt luv eric.

Serena and Dan as much as i luv this relationship if you take away the whole dan being on a high horse...but come on it was way to fast. If Blair can get over the steps can dan just get over the fact that his opinion isnt the only opinion. And serena if there going to give her a new luv make it a guy to where she doesnt have to follow what he likes the only guy i think she can do that is nate...but i dont know..like serena and dan but it went way to fast...

And speaking of serena more scenes with the "non-judgemental breakfeast club." I luv seeing serena, nate, blair and chuck together....

And speaking of blair luv the fact shes over the steps but the fact that josh would go to a direction or make some of us think that she and jack did something is just blahhh....i believe it has something to do with ther belumia problem...

and who cares about rufus and lily.....

overall not the greatest episode.

Gosh, what an epi!!! I just loved Ed Westwick, he's such an impressive actor...

Got me crying all over when he shows up at Blair's.

Um, Dan and Serena being Bro and sis is WAAAAAy too soap opera-ish. Come on!!!! Please don't do that..seriously....DON'T!

I really love Blair and Chuck. At first I was like, Chuck over Nate?? Yeah right. But now I can't get enough of Chuck and Blair. I loved this episode, seeing Chuck so vulnerable and in pain. It was beautiful Oh my gosh I just wich eh and Blair could be together for real. But would that get boring? It's kind of exciting the way it is. Lily and Rufus is ....ick!That couple would be so boring together. Dan and Serena are it. Aaron is cute, but their chemistry is nothing like hers with Dan.

Love this episode I actually cried. I feel so bad for Blair and Chuck just because he's scared.

I think that either Serena or Eric are Rufus' child.

And I don't think that Serena and Aaron will work, Dan and Serena will get back together only to find out that their brother and sister.

i def. think this was the best episode so far. FINALLY blair lets it out! Though i was disappointed that they didn't go rushing into each other's arms. But i did cry when chuck was crying and blair was comforting him. ok. on lily's secret.i don't care! ugh just tell us already. i want serene and dan to get back together already and if serena's father is actually dans father ill puke.

Aaron needs to get decapitated in buenos aires, end of story.

I absolutly loved this episode! I'm not sure what lilys secret is but something about a child?? I can't believe Blair finally told chuck she loved him. I don't really like CeCe. She seems to ruin things.

I'm totally going with the notion that Lily gave birth to Rufus's baby and then it was put up for adoption .. which means at some point this child is going to pop up on the show.

I have to say that Cyrus is interesting and loveable, and overall a nice addition to the show. But Aaron? Bland, dull, lifeless .. completely yawn-worthy. Either have him involved in some kind of accident that involves facial reconstruction, and re-cast the role .. or send Aaron away somewhere. (In fact, please let Serena just leave him behind in Buenos Aires!!)

I have to say that regarding Serena's clothing .. still showing way too much skin .. make it stop!!!

Chuck & Blair were excellent this eppy.

I loved the episode. Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester rocked big time. They should just start a Chuck and Blair show.

Lily really annoyed me this episode. She kept saying she needed to be there for her family and then she decided to leave Eric home alone for Christmas to go on a trip with Rufus (was that the night after Bart's funeral?). And she told Chuck he was the reason Bart was coming to meet her. That was probably the worst thing she could've said.

Overall amazing episode. Can't wait for January. A Chuck Bass in emotional termoil is just delicious to watch.
