Smallville: That Which Does Not Kill Us...

In this week’s episode of Smallville, “Eternal” continues the Davis/Doomsday storyline and even takes time to touch on Chloe’s departure from Jimmy. Tess begins the episode by reading from Lionel Luther’s diary and we see the meteor strike hitting Smallville. While Clark is being swept up by the Kents, Davis is hatched from some gooey egg and chased down by Lionel’s S.W.A.T.-esque men.

Next, Clark enters Tess’ office with a story pitch about a serial killer, based on more than a dozen missing persons. Tess blows him off and Clark accuses her of sweeping the story under the rug. Meanwhile, Chloe and Davis are cooking dinner together and he asks her for an update on Jimmy. She tells him about the ugly emails. Clark barges in to talk about his news story. Davis excuses himself and apparently offs another victim, as we see him throwing a shovel in his car -- the same car that immediately gets blown up by Tess.

Clark tells Chloe that he doesn’t trust Davis, and then reads of his car burning. The next morning, Davis awakes to find himself covered in bandages in Tess’ place. She tells him she admires his choice of victims. “It’s like keeping bats around to wipe out the parasites that prey on the city.” Okay, we’re not trying to jump to any incredible conclusions, but could this be foreshadowing a Batman cameo? Please?! Maybe Clark just gets a phone call from Bruce Wayne. Is that too much to ask?

But we digress: Tess reads to Davis from the diary and we see a flashback of a very young Lex and Davis spending some time together. She reveals that Clark is the Traveler and Davis is his ultimate enemy. The flashback reminds Davis that kryptonite hurt him badly and he believes it can kill him. Chloe and Clark discover that no body was found in Davis’ destroyed car, but using his x-ray vision, Clark discovers the bodies Davis has been burying.

After Davis knocks Tess silly, Clark visits Tess in the hospital to find out why she’s been after Davis’ story. She reveals her discoveries about the two boys who fell from the stars, but Clark shrugs it off. Davis tells Chloe he loves her, but she is scared of him (and with good reason…he’s been killing a lot of people!). He asks her to do him a favor and help him die. Before she can pull the lever which will release green Gatorade (liquid kryptonite) on Davis, Clark arrives and tries to talk him out of -- euthanasia? Doomsday starts appearing and Chloe pulls the lever, dousing the beast and supposedly killing him.

Later, Clark and Chloe talk about what she did. “He could’ve killed you, Clark," she says. "I won’t risk the safety of the world because of your code of ethics.” Tess meets Clark in the barn and tells him his greatest challenge is the only thing that will make him who he is supposed to be.

Finally, Chloe returns home and hears a noise in the basement. As she searches around, Davis appears and informs her that the kryptonite bath only made him stronger. He tells her he’s immortal but that he won’t hurt Clark if she stays with him. Not a bad pick-up line, if you ask us. The final scene is Chloe deciding whether or not to leave Davis and warn Clark, and she slides the bolt shut, locking herself in the basement with Davis.

Better? Worse? Tell us how you feel the show is progressing!
