Smallville: D-Day Finale

And here it is! Season 8 of Smallville is now officially in the books with the episode "Doomsday." Rokk arrives from the future to give Clark another Legion ring, telling him that if he doesn't send Doomsday to the future where the Legion can fight him, Clark will die the next day. A foreboding prophecy that somehow manages to not come true even though Clark does not use the ring. The future is fickle that way, no?

Chloe and Davis share a star-gazing scene on the hood of Davis' car and Tess finds that her precious Kandor Orb has been stolen. It's mentioned that the explosion to her vault was from the inside, so we're left thinking the Orb escaped on its own. More on this later.

In the Daily Planet, Clark is writing a goodbye letter to the city of Metropolis when Lois arrives and heckles him for not looking for Chloe. He disappears and calls Lois' desk as the Red-Blue Blur, delivers the goodbye letter to her and explains that he no longer thinks he is invincible. The next day, Clark reveals his plan to separate Davis Bloom from Doomsday to both Black Canary and Impulse. Ollie arrives to chastise Clark's ethics once more, saying, "Some people aren't worth saving." Clark reveals to the group that Ollie killed Lex Luthor and is no longer part of the team.

Jimmy, on a mission from Ollie, runs into Lois, who is hiding under Tess Mercer's desk. He hacks into Tess' computer and finds the location of Chloe and Davis. As he takes off to find the couple, Lois watches a video of a man warning Tess that what she's doing, forcing the Traveler to defeat the Beast, will unleash something worse.

After receiving a message from Black Canary about Chloe's whereabouts, Clark arrives on the scene only to be krypto-darted and incapacitated by Green Arrow. Cold! Meanwhile, Tess accuses Lois of stealing her Orb and the two have a really decent catfight, which includes rolling around on desks and leg locks around the neck and busting Tess in the face with a box that contains Clark's newly acquired Legion ring. When the ring tumbles out, Lois grabs it and vanishes. To where or when? Who knows? Our guess is to the 31st Century, where the Legion is awaiting Doomsday, but then again, the last ring Clark had allowed him to decide when he would transport to.

Chloe wakes up in a geothermal facility to find the Justice League surrounding a zip-tied Davis. She asks where Clark is and soon realizes the mutiny. Davis admits that Chloe is no longer providing the necessary effects for keeping the beast inside of him, but as Green Arrow tries to fire a fatal arrow, Chloe slams the black kryptonite into his chest, effectively separating the man from the beast.

Jimmy, arriving at the site where he hopes to find Chloe and Davis, discovers a moaning Clark. He pulls out the dart and watches Clark's skin instantly heal. Discovering that Clark is the Red-Blue Blur, Jimmy says, "You're like some Super...m...guy." Jimmy can't know the identity of Superman, right? Well, wait for it.

Clark meets Doomsday in the streets of Metropolis and gets slobber-knocked a good bit before finally grabbing Doomsday and super-leaping into the geothermal facility where Black Canary ignites the explosives, effectively burying Doomsday in the center of the Earth. Now, is it just us, or was this the epic battle the entire season revolved around? And isn't Doomsday the thing that kills Superman? And shouldn't a little more screen time have been devoted to making this fight the battle of the century? We were disappointed, to say the least, to see an explosion and then a fade into the sunrise of the next morning.

Upon Clark's request, Jimmy takes Chloe and an unconscious Davis to the watchtower he was going to give her as a wedding present. Chloe looks out the window and confesses her unending love for Jimmy. She says she only went with Davis to protect Clark. As the two share a kiss, Davis drives a jagged pipe into Jimmy's torso. Ranting to Chloe of her loving lies to him, Davis rages and is just about to kill Chloe when Jimmy uses the last of his strength to knock Davis onto a spike that drives through his chest. Jimmy tells Chloe he loves her and dies in her arms.

At Jimmy's funeral, Lois and Clark are nowhere to be found, but we learn something interesting from the eulogy: Jimmy's name was Henry James Olsen. He's not the real Jimmy Olsen from the comics! Chloe hands Jimmy's camera to his younger brother, the real Jimmy! Nice move, Smallville writers. As everyone leaves the funeral, Ollie sees Clark standing in the distance.

Back at the watchtower, Clark finds Chloe and she hugs him. He informs her that Jimmy's death is his fault for not killing Doomsday/Davis earlier.

I'm the reason Jimmy is dead. Oliver was right; I put humanity on a pedestal. It wasn't a Kryptonian beast that killed Jimmy. It was a human.

Though Chloe tries to clear Clark's conscience, he says, "Clark Kent is dead. Goodbye, Chloe." Wait, is this what Rokk was referring to? Surely, he wouldn't have used such strong words as a metaphor. As Clark walks away, we're assuming he artistically vanishes, but who knows? Finally, Tess wakes up to see the Orb glowing in her yard. A light explosion reveals a huge 'Z' in the ground and the first appearance of Zod.

I actually thought there was going to be a big battle between Clark and doomsday. But the thing that I find super disappointing, sad and that angers me is that they killed Jimmy!!!!! Why did they have to kill him?????? That was the only thing I really HATE. I know they had his funeral but I still have hope that next season they will use the ring go back and save him I still cannot accept his death =[. But I LOVE Smallville so much I have always been a fan and can't wait to see what happens in season 9.

i dont want jimmy to die...hes amazing.
and the battle with doomsday wasnt big enough. i thought this battle was supposed to have clark choose to kill davis..then fulfill his destiny..but he really had no choice other than to kill the monster half.
also the "burying it underground" didnt really make it clear what happened.
i want clark and chloe to stay friends too.
they need to get rid of tess...shes just a sorry excuse for lex luther.
overall the finale left a lot of things unclear..

just add one more entry: where is lois? "have no clue and don't really care."

introducing jimmy olsen to the show in the first place was premature and stupid, or at least, not well thought out. same for lois -- having her in the show was too premature. that said, the writers would have done better by introducing its own non-DC comic characters as they did for chloe and lionel. that way, characters such as lois and jimmy could have been introduced in cameos much the same way as they did for perry white in season three. Smallville is a world unto its own and the writers could have preserved that by not introducing more DC-comic characters than necessary. Having Lex, Lana and the Kents was familiar enough.

this was the worse season yet. the writers and producers really had no idea what they were doing. they were trying for too many different angles and in the end, Smallville the show, suffered. Really sad.

Still debating on whether to purchase the 8th season DVD. I'm passing on the 9th season altogether and will wait for that season's DVD to come out.

The doomsday ending was OK, some good twists and some disappointment, Maybe a better ending with more Lois and Clark. Clark not being there for Chloe in the end was a downer, Chloe has always been his #1 and has always been there for Clark when need be. Clark should have more respect for her, and not always feeling sorry for Clark...

i liked the smallville episode, is going to come down to louis coming back from the future and setting the time back and clark finally having the epic battle with doomsday that he was suppose to have.

OK, what's the deal? It sure looked like he was flying in the first several minutes of the episode. Was he or wasn't he? I kept thinking, how and when the heck did he learn that?! Could someone also please explain what happened to Chloe's ability and why the heck she didn't try to use it?? Did it go away when Brainiac left her? Seems lame that that was just ignored and never explained. Anyone know where Lana went?

Davis, Not!Jimmy, one minute epic fight, Clark going "dark" all failures. We saw Davis fight against his evil side the whole time and then don't get to see the moment HE loses it. Not!Jimmy was a cop-out. Kill him or don't, but don't waste 3 years to align "Mythos" Mythos is becoming a foul word these days. The epic fight was a joke. And if the budget for special effects is slashed, it's time to make the writing make sense. I don't care if the problem is the editing or the timing of these episodes, but it makes all the characters look like puppets when massive on/off switches get flipped without proper build up to character choices. Like Clark, what a massive jerk. If there had been build up to his choice, maybe I'd feel some sympathy. As it is, all I feel is that Smallville might just be a waste of time.

People give the writers a little slack. Yes, they've messed up some of the story lines from the comics but PLEASE give them a break! Yes, the fight between Clark & Doomsday should have lasted a bit longer but remember they don't have the epic battle until WAY in the future. The death of Henry James Olsen was clever on the writers part. Nice twist! Can wait until next season!
P.S. Rix you're an idiot!

I will try to be more reserved than some on this site but they certainly are entitled to show their anger. I am a big Smallville fan but there is a common denominator here: That the Clark/Doomsday fight was too short and that Jimmy Olsen (And Aaron Ashmore) deserved better. To think this was Jimmy Olsen for the last several seasons to learn maybe it wasn't really Jimmy? That is disrespectful to the fans and to Aaron Ashmore. I do know the writers and producers gave us some good episodes. But Smallville has strayed a bit from time to time from the comics and why couldn't Jimmy be a bit older in this show? I just hope they might consider bringing Aaron back and fixing what many fans believe was a major mistake by killing off Jimmy. Also, Davis killing Jimmy was not consistent with Davis' past behavior. Smallville writers and producers, thanks for the first ten episodes this season and some others but please try to fix these errors in the beginning of season nine and for God's sake man, go find Aaron Ashmore and apologize and bring him back for season nine.

One word to describe the episode = DISAPPOINTING!

Hence, I'm not surprised that the season finale had one of the lowest ratings all season. Like I've read in many of the previous comments, I too wish we could've seen a better Clark-Doomsday fight! What was that?! Seriously ... you see Clark superspeed off with him, and then we see some big explosion ... then BAM! Apparently Doomsday is dead ... for good? Who knows?! And Clark's explanation about what had happened to Doomsday was pretty lame! Its like: "OH, I don't know how I survived the explosion ... all I know is that Doomsday is gone" ... PSHHH! The writers could do better than that!

The one thing that I'll be looking forward to next season will be finding out what happened to Lois, and where they're gonna take this whole 'Clark Kent is Dead' storyline. It will be interesting to see how they play out those storylines! Bring on CLOIS!

Jimmy's death. It was a horrible death! NOBODY deserves to die like that!
And OMG, I'll admit ... I bawled my eyes out. Not that I didn't see it coming, because in truth, I did! After reading so many spoilers about who would be dying in the season finale, and how one of the two deaths would be a character in the opening credits ... the one person who immediately came to mind was Jimmy. I found no other plausible reason why they would write off the other characters in the opening credits besides him and Davis. Aaron Ashmore played Jimmy really well, and its a shame that we won't be seeing him anymore next season! I do like his character, and unlike many of the other Smallville fans, I am a Chimmy Fan! I also wanted to say that I'm disappointed with how the played they Chloe/Jimmy storyline towards the end of the season. Jimmy didn't deserve to be treated that way. At least they gave him a sort of heroic exit. And at least Davis got what he deserved in the end.

R.I.P. Henry James Olsen. May you rest in peace.

I didn't like it.
It was all rushed up, and the fight of Clak and Doomsday was not finished. Was the buget not enough to finish it?
Clark going dark is a good way to go, but it didn't make sense for me the way they did it.
I just hope they work on the story next season, cause I may drop watching if continous this way.

Nice one writters?
The Jimmy retcon it's pure bullshit! I'm done with this show, I'll go watch shows that do NOT insulte the inteligence of their fans.

Can't believe you don't know who Zod is. I think you should watch Superman 2 (the movie) - nothing could explain it better (and by the way it's the best Superman movie made so you'll enjoy it).

This was by far the worst season finale episode of the entire series and with the knowledge that the EPs/Show runners wrote it makes me doubt how well S9 will be.

Smallville was finally winning me back as an average viewer, before I'd catch episode here and there but this season was different. I came back with Legion and was getting excited. I continued to watch every episode since then, hated Infamous, Stiletto and Hex, but take those out, the story flowed nicely and I was getting excited. It really set things up, to this big show down, and then the finale killed the momentum. It went from a Clark/Storyline focused episode to a Writing Jimmy off episode.

It was

EPIC FAILURE!

That is why it got the lowerst ratings of any season finale.

Chloe was doing it for Clark, she wanted to save Davis, but she was sad she lost Jimmy? Make up your damn minds!

Why did they even have Lois in this episode? She left at the 15 minute mark, they could have used that time to make the Doomsday/Clark fight last longer, instead they sent her to god knows where? Well you know what,s he's been so far from the sticking storyline they should have just gotten rid of her instead of Jimmy.

Speaking of which, 3 years and it turns out he's not Iconic? You've got to be kidding me.

Lana Lang has freaking superpowers; Lois Lane is a tabloidish journalism who's position at the DP was only secured because she slept with her boss; Chloe Sullivan and Tess Mercer don't exist; Martha is a US Senator; Lex is dead; and Clark put emo people to shame/ a whimp most of the time.

I could go on and on, and they kill JIMMY because he's too OLD? My god!

Does this mean the others aren't Iconic either with all their uniconic development?

Just when I thought the show was getting good again, you pull this out.

Dawn if you read this, CANCEL THE SHOW! Your viewers deserve better.

It was a bit disappointing. All the build up for the Doomsday Finale, and no pay off.

I know part of the disappointment was because I love the Superman Doomsday story so much. I understand that Clark isn't Superman so to have the dramtic death scene to match the comics was probably wishful thinking on my part. If I was honest to myself, I was wondering how Smallville was going to pull it off. Alas though, I wish the fight scene was a bit longer, and that we got to see Lois in the end rather than Tess and the ORB. It's where Lois has gone that will get me to watch next season. I also get the connection between Lois and Clark human side. In the comics, Lois is Superman's connection to Humanity, and is played up in the Comics often. So I like that twist. Not sure about the Zod story? Not too happy that Tess survied as well. Oh well, will tune in to season 9, and hope it's as good as the first half of this season was. The last half was a bit disappointing after such a strong start.

It was pretty good. I can't wait to see what Lois is up too next season. I hope they focus more on Clark, and less on Chloe.

doomsday wasnt suppose 2 show sthis soon

Great end to the season- can't believe Jimmy's gone. But I feel Clark is deserting Chloe when she needs him most-what kind of friend is that? I never read Superman comics...so who is Zod?

I am so disappointed in this episode. WHy did they have to make Davis seem like a bad guy, he isn't he was trying to be good. There's no way he would try to harm Chloe something is wrong And how could Chloe betray him

Doomsday must be pretty tough to knock some blood out of Clark. Oh, who's Zod? Also, I don't really trust Oliver after that whole shoot Clark in the back with an arrow an just walk away act, I mean come on. Plus he looked pretty mysterious at Jimmmy's (or James) funeral. I was pretty disappionted when Doomsday and Clark fought. I mean yeah it was cool for the whole 4 punches that were only given by Doomsday but I thought it was going to be a little more bigger. And one more thing, when Clark hit Doomsday and went flying into the building, was Clark flying or was that a jump because I was pretty happy when I saw Clark fly/jump but then he just fell down into the building. But all in all, it was a good episode because come on, Smallville's like my #1 show so I gotta give it some props.

WILL THERE BE A SEASON NINE I HAVE BEEN WATCHING THIS SHOW EVER SINCE IT STARTED AND I REALLY LIKED THE FINALLY BUT I JUST HOPE THATS NOT HOW THEY WILL END THE SHOW

After this episode I've had enough. I'm done with Smallville.

this sucked like hell!!!!!!!!
