Fighting Words: Should Supernatural Go Beyond Season Five?

There are some rules, of course. Our goal is to make this a friendly area to talk through the issues, not a place to mount TV-inspired holy wars. So we ask you do the following:
- Keep it clean. No swearing, no personal attacks, no branding people who disagree with you poopy-butts or other such unpleasantness.
- Stay on topic. If, for example, we’re debating whether Jason C. looks best in a suit or a t-shirt, it’s not the time to bring up arguments about his interview style or whether he loves Mia, Jackie or Sarah the most (we’ll get to that soon enough).
- Try not to YELL, dismiss people out of hand, or use phrases like “A TRUE FAN should think this,” “Obviously that’s wrong,” or “You TOTALLY don’t know the show/have the inside scoop/read the mind of the show’s creator like I do.” This is about opinions, and there are no right or wrong answers, just more or less compelling arguments.
Beyond that, anything goes! Feel free to suggest topics you want to debate in the comments, or e-mail us with suggestions.
Now, normally, we have multiple people taking positions on this. But this week, I'm arguing with myself (you'd be surprised how often that happens). The reason? This news item about Supernatural. We all know that Evil Genius Kripke has a five-year plan for the show. But at Asylum, the boys told the crowd that they're contracted through six seasons. Kripke? He's only contracted for five, and he's been very clear about wanting the show to end after next season.
This prompted my inner debate -- which you can read after the jump.
Me: OMG, Supernatural Season Six! How cool would that be! Another year with the boys!
Also Me: Yeah, but Kripke's not in, and Kripke is the evil genius behind the show. Without him, will it be anywhere near as good?
Me: Well, I'm sure a lot of the writers would stay on board, and they rock. Surely they can come up with more kick-ass reasons for the boys to, you know, kick ass.
Also Me: Yeah, but season five will be about fighting -- and hopefully defeating -- Lucifer. Every season has been an escalation from the one before. How do you top taking out the devil himself?
Me: They'll think of something! I want more of my boys!
Also Me: And I want the show to not flounder around without a purpose for a year. Sometimes, you have to let good things go out on a high note.
Me: If wanting more Sam and Dean is wrong, I don't want to be right!
Also Me: And I don't want to see a great show turn bad because fans like me couldn't let it go!
Me: More boys!
Also Me: Death without Kripke!
And then I end up in a fistfight with myself, and it's just embarrassing.
So: What's your take, Supernatural fans? Would you want a post-Lucifer season 6 with the boys but without Kripke? Should we keep it on air beyond it's original plan? Talk about it in the comments!
Comments
I'm a big fan of Buffy and Angel. Angel was canceled and left wanting more. So the same will be for Supernatural. If it was meaning to be only five seasons, than be it. Well with the Devil and Good in its final season, I don't think there is more to it. Better than trash the show around. If the man behind Supernatural creativity won't be back I don't think Supernatural should. Let it go out with a bang!

I don't think Kripke is going to leave his show. I mean, That's his baby!!! Plus he knows there are loads of fans out there who believe that he's needed to make the show fabulous like it's been for the past 4 seasons. I also agree that if the show ever ends (I know, I know every show has to end but can't I be delusional a little while longer that J&J will forever grace our screens with our favorite Van Helsings!?) it HAS to end on a high note.
Personally Kripke or no Kripke I don't think I'd be able to keep myself from watching. Unfortunately I'm that shallow that as long as Sam & Dean (Dean being my personal fav, but that may be a debate for another time) are there than so am I.
SO I say "LONG LIVE SUPERNATURAL"!!

I think that it should be either way. If there's only five seasons let there be five. If there's six let there be six. There's two things to look at. Do we want six seasons with Hot Sam and Dean, but no Kripke? Or! Do we want five seasons with Kripke? I personally wouldn't chance the down fall of Supernatural. Five seasons is fine with me and so is six. Either way I get to see two very Hot guys kick butt.

I think supernatural should go past season 5 and on to season 6...with or without Kripke...because it is probably one of the best shows on TV now and will always be one of the best shows ever made...and I know it’s all because of Kripke...after all he's the one who created it...but that doesn’t mean that he's the only one who has worked on making it the way it is for the past four years...Kripke might be the mastermind behind the idea of supernatural...but supernatural is epic not only because of the idea...the idea could only get them far enough...but it’s the producing and the writing and the special effects and last but not least it's the acting..and the hard work that all the people other than Kripke put on set everyday cast and crew...Kripke started it all but he might not necessarily be the one who carried it all the way till Lucifer rose and doesn’t have to be the one to end it..his name will always come along with supernatural whether he decides to do season 6 or not ...he is not the only writer who worked on the scripts ever since the Pilot...he might not be the one who came up with every single idea and every character the show introduced...he's only human and 1 on his own can’t go that far in such a good way...it’s not only Kripke its everyone else...and who said that Lucifer must be defeated at the end of season 5 why not kill the sucker at the end of season six instead..Azazel didn’t die in the first season although there were some pretty good chances of killing him...but I believe it was for the best..it gave us a pretty good follow up for a great season 2...I’m sure whoever will be writing the story can stall for a little more and give us and all the supernatural fans out there one more season with our favorite show...and maybe just maybe that one extra season is all we truly need for an epic closure just like the epic start the show hit it off with...and who know maybe season 6 won't be the closure after all..but all we gotta as hard chore supernatural fans is to hold on to the show for as much as it will and can go...because our appreciation is part of what got it this far..a huge part actually...without us the fans and the audience and the viewers..Supernatural would have ended a long time ago...and I’m sure that ur all pretty happy to support it this far because at the end it gave u the best show u will probably ever know...so give supernatural a chance to prove all of the people who disagree out there wrong because i know it can...and it will...and give the crew a chance to get to the place where everybody thought they can’t reach...and give Jared and Jensen a chance to shine once more in a show we all love...and give us a chance to stay with supernatural for one more year..OR MORE…just give supernatural a chance...u never know when u will be amazed.

Like Dean said in " all hell breaks loose part 2" LET IT END!!!!! Season 5 should be the last. I will miss the my favorite show.

Well that personal battle pretty much happened in my head too. And neither won, it was messy and bloody, hair yanked, gah, its terrible. Anyway.
ACTUALLY I have something interesting to add, at one of the convetions (I forget which, sorry!) Jared had said that they were originally only going to do four seasons, but because of the amazing ratings they got they went on with the fifth because Kripke felt excited about it. So...maybe if we just help them get super uber amazing, out of this world ratings there will be a sixth AND Kripke does it? If that happens...I think I would die. I really would.
But back on topic, I have decided...*Deep breath* withoutKripkeiWouldntWantSuperntural.
There. I said it. I'm going to cry now...
=D

I'm really confused about the matter. I'm going to be absolutely devastated when the show finishes. It has to finish at some point, but i never thought it would be this soon. I love this show to DEATH and would kill for a sixth season. I do respect Kripke's wishes to end at 5. I will be crying for weeks and most likely will glued to my bed with a box of tissues. All good things have to come to an end, right? :(
Posted by: SexyAckles | June 30, 2009 4:23 AM
I think that there should be a 6th sason, but only a half season, or maybe just 8 episodes they couldnt make during season 3's writer strike. Kinda wrapping things up.
Posted by: Deering | June 19, 2009 6:16 PM
As much i LOVE this incredible show i would vote "NO" for a sixth season without Eric Kripke.. I mean, this is the genius who create it, and i,m afraid to think what will be with somebody else at charge, i don't want that my favorite show to become a boring, fluffy and shallow show who'd go on forever just to keep some audience. Like most of the people said here: where do you go after Lucifer's rising? And as Natalia said it's obviously that Jensen and Jared are tired and i also didn't want to see them exhausted filming at the sixth or seventh season just because they are obligated by contracts:(. So season 5 and then THE END:)

Aaahhh idk! I dun want the show to suck but I can't get enuff sn! I even got my bf into it! I guess the only thing to do is to drag it out into season 6 and do more folklore hunting inbetween like season1,2..

To be or not to be?
It's a good quietion!
So we are having the brothers for 5 years, should it go or not? the question was raised every year, but you can see, the show is getting better and better. I don't think Kripke will abandon the show if CW decides to continue it for a next season. Both CW and Kripke need more confidance from we audiance.
If we all say no to the show, OK there will no longer the show is.
I don't mind to watch brothers keep going there hunting trip like they were in season 1, 2 and 3, actually I watch them over and over, but I dare not to watch season 4 until now, because the spoil alerts that the show is leading a place that I never thought of if should be, it's amazing changing but I need sometime to adjust myself.
But in every ways I'll keep going with Supernatural whatever it goes only my favorate boys are there. If Kripke there, that would be great!
Hope we can see Supernatural movie in the near future.
Better in serious.
Seriously.

....Thinking about it, just because Eric Kripke said he only planned for 5 seasons, it doesn't mean he can cook up something more. I mean, everyone agrees he's a genius, why is it impossible for him to think about something more than Lucifer?.....
Because what is more frightening and more of a foe than Lucifer himself? Everything after him is a let down. Why would Sam and Dean be frightened of anything after conquering the devil? What would be interesting on any sort of long term basis after the devil? A vampire here and there? A ghost? I desperately want this show to end on its own terms, where Kripke wants the story to go. Kripke can't go all out if he has to stretch things and the thought of a new executive producer is too scary for words. God knows what he or she would think was good story. Supernatural has a chance to be remembered long term as something special, not just a flash in the pan. That's not going to happen if there's one season too many and the leads don't want to be there. Jensen and Jared are tired; it's so obvious they don't want to do a season 6 if you watch any of the con videos. It's so obvious it's embarrassing. Yes, they'll do it if they're obligated to do it, but I don't want to see it knowing that they're exhausted and are only there because the CW/Warners wanted 22 more episodes for the cash cow. To me, that's sad. Kripke can SHOCK US and THRILL US if he's allowed to end his story the way he wants.

I think that "inner debate" pretty much sums it all up... Of course i would LOVE to see more of my gorgeous ass-kicking boys but if the show is going to suck without Kripke then no one will watch it and we will all be disappointed and then kicking ourselves in the rear end, asking ourselves why we didn't stop while we were still ahead. That's how i see it but if they could cook up something great that doesn't suck well then more power to them!

I say yes to season 6 and 7... i love supernatural and anything Jensen ackles is in.
But there are still some unanswered questions about supernatural: Like why did dean's eyes bleed in the bloody mary episode.
I think kipke went to far with the heaven Vs. Hell
Please season 6!!!!

Thinking about it, just because Eric Kripke said he only planned for 5 seasons, it doesn't mean he can cook up something more. I mean, everyone agrees he's a genius, why is it impossible for him to think about something more than Lucifer? The Angles storyline just started while the Demons plot had been going on since the beginning, couldn't they stop the Demon one and jump on the other? Not that I'm saying that's a good idea, all I'm saying is, Kripke's a genius, and so are most of the writers of the show, as well the directors and crew and cast. If they wanted to go on a sixth, why not? Let's not assume that just because Kripke said he only planned for five it means going for a sixth would be less than stellar. Haven't we all said we trust in him?
In any case, if he can't stretch it, then fine. I would rather have the show go out with a bang than for it 'to go gentle into that good night'. But! I'd love to see them working together again. The chemistry of the Supernatural crew, cast, directors and writers is exceptional. I bet that with that mix, whatever they cook up, would be just as great-- maybe even greater.

I vote "no" on season six. I love the show, too, but as many other smart posters here have pointed out: Smallville, Gilmore Girls without Amy Sherman Palladino, where do you go after Lucifer? Kripke won't sign on for an additional season, because CW/Warners will want to lock him in for two. That's how these negotiations are done. There's not seven seasons worth of story. Kripke will leave. What can the new executive producer, who'll be beholdened to Dawn Ostroff for the job, do except go back to monsters of the week and girlfriends from the CW casting department of young, pretty, and shallow? Bring back Ellen and she might be an interesting choice, but you know the CW would never go for a woman over 40 as a love interest. That thought doesn't process in their mindset. The female 18-34 demo wants bad soap opera and romance with impossibly pretty people and that's all they want. That's their formula.
Writing a proper ending with the end of season five is a way to avoid all that trouble. 5 seasons. That's my vote.
Posted by: lila | June 11, 2009 1:29 PM
I think there should only be the 5 seasons planned. It would be a lot better for a show to go out with a *bang* than to drag on and eventually suck. Plus, if the show comes to an end, it gives the guys more time to do more, different projects. I love Supernatural and would hate to see it end, but not all great things last forever. The show just wouldn't be the same without Eric Kripke.
Posted by: Molly | June 11, 2009 1:05 AM
I agree with everyone who says that Supernatural should end after 5 seasons, most especially if Kripke leaves. When ASP left Gilmore Girls, the show changed. I continued to watch it until the end, and I would do that with Supernatural should there be a Kripke-less season 6, but a lot of what I loved about the show was gone.
And then of course there is the Smallville route, as many have pointed out in other comments, where everyone (producers, creators, writers, actors, etc) remains on the show, but it just keeps going and going and going like the freaking Energizer bunny in spite of the fact that it peaked years ago. Again, I would continue to watch it (although I thought I would watch Smallville to the end even though it was getting progressively worse, and that didn't last too long...), but I would hate the fact that a show as good as Supernatural went down that road.
The best option, I think, is to just end it while it's still so good rather than watch something we all love turn into something we dislike. Better to be left wanting more than getting more and hating it.
Posted by: kelsey | June 9, 2009 9:18 PM
It doesn't matter to me. I'm through with it now. I love the early shows when the brothers hunted all manner of creatures but when they took the turn into "Heaven vs. Hell" I got turned off in a big way. If I want that kind of plotline I'll read those ridiculous Left Behind books.
Posted by: Lynne Parker | June 9, 2009 3:17 PM
Even though I think it should end at Season 5, I would still watch it. But as much as I love the show and the boys, it should end when Kripke ends it.
Posted by: Rebecca | June 9, 2009 2:03 PM
Let them go when the story is right...when the ending has come...no matter how much I love the boys.....then I say after the ending(next season) make us a movie.....it's been rumored....I would love a movie--old style Winchester, or new syle Winchester-dosen't matter to me....throw in some wee-chester for good measure...show things they can't show on CW.....keep the same writers same producers....don't break up the family man....lol.-And give us a standing Ovation we can really sink into....bring to the Winchesters to the big screen.....yay- that I would pay to go see.....probably more than once....lol-----LacAnn

without Kripke .... absolutely NOT

Ok, my head says end it with season 5 as the series creator intended, but my heart says "Supernatural Forever!!" I too, Sarah, am torn(Que the Natalie Imbruglia).
P.S. It would be easier if they weren't so frakking hot.

Season 6? NO. Absolutely not. I love the show, but I'm not so addicted that I'll sit through mediocrity just to see Jensen and Jared. A mediocre Supernatural would make me quite wistful. This show has the chance to be remembered as better than Buffy, Angel, or any of them. An integral part of that success is knowing when to call it quits and writing a believable, complete character arc for both brothers. Success isn't drawing out the Lucifer story until Jensen and Jared are graying at the temples. There is no satisfying story left after the defeat of Lucifer. Every story has a natural beginning, middle, and end. What if the sixth season showrunner decides that girlfriends are needed? Does everyone remember how well potential love interests for the brothers were received? Ackles and Padalecki DON'T WANT TO DO IT. Read betweeen the lines. They're very polite at the conventions, but listen to how they say what they say, and their lack of all out enthusiasm for another season. It's not difficult to see. Do I want a sixth season without Kripke at the helm and two leads who don't want to be there?
NO. A sixth season is not a good idea. Has anyone seen a show called Smallville? Enough said.

I love Supernatural and I will keep watching as long as they keep it on the air! I say go for season 6!

I think they shoul stop in the 5 season. Let it go like a complete tale. Not this and what happen later.
Posted by: elvira | June 8, 2009 1:52 PM
I think that Kripke should definitely come back for Season Six. I also think that the show has enough juice to go for another one or two seasons.
Posted by: Alex | June 8, 2009 10:47 AM
I wouldn't mind if the sixth season was like a 'lost time' thing of Dean hunting alone and Sam at Stanford(Supernatural-the Wonder Years, LOL) but to drag the story past the actual ending would kind of suck.
Posted by: Ren | June 8, 2009 10:11 AM
I say "No" to Season Six. For Kripke's sake, they're fighting Lucifer next year. Where in the hell (forgive the pun) could they go after that without it being a letdown?
This seems to me a money ploy, and I understand that, at the end of the day, this is still a business. But, still, I hope that Kripke's wishes are honored. When the story is over--and it seems to be wrapping up at the end of S5--then the show should take its bow and go out on top. Otherwise, it's gonna get run into the ground.
I think there are many talented writers on the show that could make the best with what they have, but why bother? Supernatural is a finite story. Let it be told then let it be done.

I'd be very excited for a sixth season! Sera Gamble said there's plenty of urban legends and Winchester stories to be told. She seemed very excited as well. And I know a lot of fans say that a sixth season would automatically mean 5 to 10 more seasons, the guys would have walkers (at age 30?!) and the stories would all be ridiculous like a Hawaiian weddings, etc. etc. But one more season, especially with a show that's had a SLOW rise to fame (as versus a huge early hit that fizzles quickly).....I don't think that it would be difficult to envision an additional season. And the writing staff for SN would NOT suddenly go brain dead and turn into babbling idiots when the clock strikes at the end of season 5. They are a fantastic group of writers who have done a great job so far. They've created and developed multi-layered characters that I'd LOVE to watch for even more seasons. Nay-sayers can stop watching SN and go watch Grey's as IT continues its fizzling death-throes!
Posted by: Saltnburnem/tngmd | June 7, 2009 9:15 PM
I'm pretty much like you! LOL
I don't want a horrible show, one where the boys hate being there and it shows (but they're too professional for that) or where the writing sucks (except Kripke doesn't write most of the episodes, and if they keep a lot of the writers...).
In the end, I want more. I don't automatically assume a Kripke-less show would suck, or that J and J would suck. We can't choose or guess in advance how it's going to turn out, so if they continue...I'm totally there.
Posted by: Natalie J. Damschroder | June 7, 2009 7:27 PM
Wow, that would be totally amazing. Supernatural is the greatest show this century. another season with those guys would be great, not to mention the ratings. But, the only reason this show could go on is if they find another main reason to fight the demons, examples: getting the yellow-eyed demon for their mother and his plan with Sam, well he died, but so did Sam so Dean sold his soul, which is another plot point which keeps the show going, with out one, the show would be pointless and where is supernatural going to go when/if they beat the
Lucifer? i mean he is like the base of all demons, right? no demons, no show really.
And then we have the issue with Kripke, he's only signed on for 5 seasons, the 5th season is going to be awesome, though i don't know what's going to happen, i just got a feeling. Kripke is the master mind behind this show and with out him, no offense to the other writers, how good is the show really going to be? i mean the other writers, are great and I'm sure could find other reasons for the Winchester boys to keep hunting but we don't want to drag the show on, and on for another season with no plot point. Alot of my opinion of having another season depends on what goes on in season 5. i mean if they defeat Lucifer in season 5, maybe the season finally could be two hours and have Sam and Dean's life post-Lucifer. Like the article says, i would hate to see a good show go bad, but it's going to be hard as heck to let it go. Don't get me wrong, i want more of the boys but i don't want to watch them just piddle around for 22 episodes (that's basically a season)
So to sum all that rambling up, the only reason, no matter how much i love it which is a lot, that Supernatural should go on past 5 seasons is if they don't defeat Lucifer and something else comes up that's worth a plot point (can't be solved in 2 episodes, like Dean's deal). but i pretty much agree with the article's author and his arguing with himself, about wanting more but not wanting to see the show ruined but and extra season... Hmmm, maybe, just maybe, if Supernatural does go on for a 6th season, meaning they don't defeat Lucifer, we can get Kripke to stay! (i know i repeated myself numerous times but i don't really care, i just want to get my point across, lol)

hey i think they should go on to season 6 think how buffy went on to 7 seasons and they were all good seasons

i think that this show is one of the best that the cw has to offer. Actually, its one of the better shows on tv. It would be a total waste and a shame to cancel this great show. The writers, actually do research about the charcters that they put in the show.

Why the delay in posting our comments? I posted DAYS ago (OK, two days ago) on this article and yet there is still 0 Comments up. And I know I'm not the only one posting.

I am a huge fan of Supernatural but season six will be a great mistake, especially without Kripke. It's better to stop at the right time (I mean, with the firth season) than to finish pitifully and disgracefully. Fans don't want an endless show, they do want a strong story with sense. Please, don't think only about money and don't transform Supernatural into Lost.

i, too, am torn. i have been preparing for S5 to be the last for 5 years now. To tease me with the potential for more seems a bit cruel.
maybe it could be a shortened S6 that way the lucifer story could continue from #5?
i just hope the boys dont get bitter/screwed - doing the show cause they are contractually obligated to do it, watching something they have worked so hard to build turn into something none of else recognize.
the only other good point is that maybe it will avoid the fade to black sundance and butch style ending i've heard a lot of desire for...My hope is for not necessarily a happy one (cause that might be too much of chick flix moment!) but I would love the boys to drive off in the impala to do what they do best…. Hunting things, saving people …the family business

We saw so many shows continuing with more and more seasons, and the major result is quite bad, everytime it is say (and I agree for the series I am/was watching) that the show should have stopped before.
So if Kripke stops to produce after the 5th season, the series should stop !
I don't understand why people prefer to continue a show and end it badly, rather than end it now, but on a great mark !
SPN is so great right now, I'm sure Kripke has a lot of ideas to end the show with the coming 5th season, so end the show as Kripke want!

They should definitely do another season.エ would love to see sam and dean kick some more demon ass and defeat the devil they just can't let it end without going ◯u† wit a bang.

In my humble opinion, Supernatural should continue going for a sixth season (or the rest of enternity, I'm good with that too). This may be because I'm a crazed, almost psychopathic fan, but I just think it's too soon for it to end. People are getting into it, it keeps getting better and better. Who's to say that without Kripke, it will fail? Jared and Jensen are fabulous actors, If Sara Gamble stays, the writing will kick some serious butt, and it will give a chance for someone else to put their personal touch on an already great show. I will admit though, that without Kripke (yes, Sarah, he IS the evil genius behind it all) it will be different, and maybe not as good. But Supernatural's a fighter. The show is like the Impala. "It'll still be bad-ass when it's forty". Give it a chance, guys! I'm positive it won't disappoint!

I think Supernatural without Kripke will still be good. We have terrific actors i Jared and Jensen. They are both who made the show. Not Eric.

i would love it if there was a 5th season and beyond! I couldn't think of a life without Supernatural! It's already bad enough waiting for the 5th one to come out, but it would mean death to all of us to live without Supernatural! I LOVE THAT SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's really hard to decide. I want my boys more and more. It can go on like forever and i watch but i also don't want a wonderful show turns bad.I want this show to be a legend. So i can't decide but maybe it can go on a little more but of course it won't be the same without Kripke...

Speaking only for myself, I am very leery of a post Lucifer (or a non post-Lucifer) season six. Once Kripke is likely gone, the show will have a new showrunner who may listen to network "suggestions." That makes me apprehensive of the show's chances for maintaining high quality. There are two possiblities:
1.)--Kripke scripts the defeat of Lucifer for next year's season finale...then the show has to return to less frightening, less thought provoking storylines that feel anticlimactic after the brothers have defeated their greatest foe and should find personal, inner peace. Perhaps the network will suggest girlfriends for both characters in the hopes to keep the show runing, or add new characters like bright, shiny, hairless teenagers.
2.)Kripke finds out next spring (and believe me, CW won't accomodate him by letting him know early) that the show is renewed, so he puts off the defeat of Lucifer in the scripting. In other words, the season five finale is toned down and the emotional impact blunted. Then the apocalypse is dragged out for another 22 episodes *with a different show runner at the helm.* That's a lot of episodes in which to drag out a story.
I strongly dislike either possibility. Very strongly dislike. Staring at Jensen and Jared's faces isn't enough to keep me coming back if the show starts to suffer in quality. Anyone remember how terrible "The West Wing," once a superb series, became when Aaron Sorkin left? Anyone remember what happened on Gilmore Girls when Amy Sherman Palladino wouldn't sign for two more seasons, so the network let her leave? Lorelai married that milquetoast Christopher.
Smallville, anyone? Need I say more. Let's end this series at five seasons and go out a classic. The two leads want to go. They never come out and say they're happy about the possibility of six at the cons. They always qualify their faint praise for the idea. They're *exhausted.* Five seasons tells an organic story with a natural, creative ending when the brothers have faced and defeated their fiercest battles. Demons and inner demons. Don't drag it out to six seasons. Don't become Smallville. You think the network wouldn't try to squeezed out seven if they can? Don't do that to Supernatural. Let it end a quiet classic on its own terms. Screw the CW.

Personally, I feel if the ratings are awesome, the boys are in, and the writers stay with the show, Supernatural would do ok without Kripke. But for all we know, if he sees how well the show is doing, he may jump on board for another season. It pretty much relies on the fans and getting the show more advertisement.

I think that the show should definitely go on past season 5. My advice would be that kripke should stay on (obviously!) but that the producers/writers should pull back on the storlyine because it is currntly so fast-track and dramatic. Not that I don't like it, (I love it!) but I think if things remain at this pace, and the show continues, there will be no story left to tell and I don't want the show to be over. So I think that the show should turn it down a notch and go back to the nature of the show in seasons 1 & 2, the good, old, scary, hunting episodes. Another part of me says to not worry about it and just trust Kripke because he won't let us down!

This will depend on how the story will be conducted. If it is to lose the course, something that has already happened with other series previously, I prefer to quit Supernatural in its fifth season. Would miss, but close with honor.

offcourse it should continue if Jared and Jensen have agreed then ye. i want more of my boys. cant get enough of them. it should go endless. hahaha. lil *fangirl moment*

i will love to see the show go on for more that 5 season. supernatural is my favorite show on tv. please let it go on for more that 5 season

What I don't understand is if the show is making good money and a lot of people are tuning in to watch Supernatural, Why stop? I think Supernatural should continue throughout season five or six or what ever. It should remain being on the air until its not making the money, or when the show isn’t is losing its viewers.

Supernatural is an awesome show. We all know it. Don't we all want it to end the same way that it began. Great! If Kripke has a plan to end it next year. I say we the fans go with it. Every season of this show is like a good movie. So far we've had really great sequels. If the fifth sequel is supposed to be the last chapter then i say we just enjoy the ride and build up to the big finale.
I love this show. I love looking at Jared/Sam and Jensen/Dean every week. But thats no reason to have a sixth mediocre season when it can end on top. I know ratings are up and people are just discovering the series. But as a long time fan i want it to do its best and not just stick around for money. I don't want it to trade great storylines for flashy hollywood crap.
Like i said. I love looking at Jared and Jensen too. BUT THATS WHAT THE DVDS ARE FOR!!!!! We can relive any moment over and over again. :)

okay i totally agree wiv you that kripke is the brains of the operation!. . . but when it comes down to the line i believe if jensen, jared, jim, sara gamble and all the supernatural co are on board , kripke will join the ranks!!. . . and no doubt cos of his brillance the cw will not want to let him go and will offer him more money ta stay!! .. .cos gawd he sure deserves it!!!. . .

Should SuperNatural go beyond season 5? Umm....YES! SuperNatural is my second favorite show on the CW (second to Smallville) SuperNatural is awesome not to mention it has two really smoking hot lead actors.

I'm a huge fan of supernatural, and while I wouldn't want it to end, I think ultimately I would rather it end on a high note. However, for me it all depends on what the storyline would be and i'm not sure it can get as big and as intense as killing lucifer.

Alright, alright, I'll bite. I want a sixth season, but I also doubt the writers can top the release of Lucifer, so I agree with most of the points you've addressed.
One way around it that I can see is to have the sixth season break away from the rest of the series in some fashion. Have the season five finale be an acceptable end to the series that provides the proper closure fans need and then treat season sixth like a bonus season. That way, if they really do mess up the sixth season, people can choose to disregard it (The same way they can choose to ignore the comics and novel spin-offs).

Supernatural is the best show in the history of television. It beats out Buffy, Angel and Charmed. The acting is maginificent. The stories are fresh.

For the most part I have the same debate you did. I do believe that the writers could go on without Kripke.
However unlike most of SPN Fandom I encounter - I'm a horror fan. I worry that we'll lose the Licked Hand over-the-top horror. I also worry about the mytharc. Because so much of what I love about the show is that we are still finding out in season 4 things about season 1.
If the mytharc wraps in Season 5, then we'll either get a self contained arc for Season 6 that doesn't go back the way this one did. Don't get me wrong, I doubt they'd ignore the past - they would definitely build on it. But the seeds for so much have been planted all along and they can't do that. Not without a certain amount of retcon. I enjoy a good backstory but it's not the same thrill that I get when Mary makes her deal and I realize it's been planned forever because her ghost says "Sorry" in Home. You can fake it to a certain extent, but after 5 years of the real thing, I'm afraid I could tell the difference.
One positive note - the idea that it's even POSSIBLE to go to Season 6 implies that both boys live through Season 5. I think.

I had that same fight with myself!! I LOVE this show and would hate to see it end prematurely, but I also don't want a long, lame, lingering death. I would rather it end like "Angel", leaving me wanting more (*SPOILERS!! WITHOUT the many character deaths, KRIPKE! **END SPOILERS*), than to end like "Alias", leaving me wondering "WTF?!?". There's not much worse than a beloved, awesome show just sort of....petering out. "Veronica Mars" comes to mind.

I really don't see a show without Kripke creating it. But if he decided to stay and direct a few episodes or at the very least direct the series finale, then I would stick around. For me, Kripke is the deal breaker, if he leaves completely(sorry boys), I don't think the show would survive. It hurts even more to hear about him(possibly) leaving because we don't have(who in my opinion would be the one and only guy who could carry on the legacy) Kim to keep it going. All this aside, I find it very hard to believe that Kripke would abandon, what he has referred to on many occasions, his "baby". In conclusion, I hope that if he does gives up his main duties, he at the very least, still sticks around and definitely come back to finish off the series.

I would looove a season 6!!!
I am a brazilian fan (my english is not so good, so i am sorry any mistakes I make) and there are sooo many brazilian fans that also want that!!! but there is a division, some dont want the show to go on without kripke, and some do, and i believe that the majority would prefer the end in season 5 if the show would not be good as it is.
The thing is, i agree with you that there are lots of good writers that could make a really good season 6, we can see that in the episodes with diferent writers, so why not give it a try???
you should see how many supernatural fans are here in south america, even trying to make a document with a lot of signatures to have a convention somewhere here in south america - and of course i would go, for sure. We have here lots of sites and blogs about supernatural, and some of the issues we discuss is about a season 6.
Well, in sum, like the they always say in the show, there is a lot of evil out there and it never ends!!! so i believe the writers can come up with a really good thing for season 6, or even 7, like in the midle of season 5 dean receive a call from ben's mother that tells him that ben is really deans son, and somehow the "devil" knowing that already, planned a turn over when the boys are closing on him. And actually, if lucifer dies will not have anymore evil in the world, because lets face it, evil started with lucifer questioning good and falling down. The human spiritual evolution comes from learning to do the right thing when once you did, or observed someone doing the wrong thing. If lucifer dies will be a mess, a confusion, all the demons around the world without a lider, who would they follow??? there would have a war among demons and we, humans would suffer soo much more.
If you read job book in the bible you see God and Devil talking, and you can see that Devil is doing his work, almost like God asked him to, and there is a interesting "version" of this talk in an Anne Rice book called Memnoch the Devil - witch is a awsome book, i recommend. All i am saying is lucifer cant really die becouse if he does there are 2 things that can happen: first - the evil in the world would end so there is no meaning for us humans keep living because everybody would go to paradise, because there would not have anymore demons or bad spirits "making" us do bad things even when we dont know they are around, but they "suggest in our ear" to do so. second - like i said before the world as we know would be a mess because if the other demons survive after luficer's death, there would have aa war to see who would rule the dark side in lucifer place.
Well, sorry if i said to many things, and maybe stuped ones, but my point is, there is a lot of story to be told, a lot of pathways the writers can take to make more season. the world is full of bad and good, and this is essencial to evolution, so we can reach a level of knowledge and goodness to earn a place in "eden"
Posted by: Gisela | June 5, 2009 8:22 PM
Yes, I think it can go on with just the boys. Remember, just because Kripke said he only had a 5 year plan and doesn't intend on staying any longer, it doesn't mean he won't stop all involvement. Plus, Robert Singer, the Executive Producer, leans more towards brothers interaction than separate storylines between the two. Jensen Ackles did say that there is tons of urban legends out there to be explored, and I think that the fantastic writers could easily come up with a season by season story arc to keep Supernatural going, without it becoming a "Monster of the Week" show.
Posted by: Sue | June 5, 2009 7:57 PM
Honestly, let it go out on a high note, completing Kripke's plan, and end at year 5. As much as I love the show, I'd love for it to be complete and epic rather than drawn out and weak.
