The Best and Worst of Times: Smallville, Season 8

We’ve discussed the Season 8 Finale of Smallville and throughout the season, we’ve talked about each episode, but we want to know your opinions on the best and worst moments of Season 8. Were there times when you felt the tears brimming? What about the times when you were mad at the direction of the show? Any moments you found yourself yelling at the television, “Why are you doing this, Clark?” We here at The CW Source have come up with our own list of favorite and most despised moments of Season 8 to lead the discussion, but we want to encourage all of you to tell us your thoughts.

The Best
Beginning with the positive things we liked about Season 8 seems the best way to open this discussion and we’ll start from the beginning.

  • At the end of “Odyssey”, Clark’s realization that he needs to leave the farm and embrace his destiny was a very nice touch of maturation for our hero. Though it leads us further from “Smallville” and closer to “Superman”, it was greatly needed.
  • The introduction of Davis Bloome in "Plastique".
  • We really enjoyed the back story of Oliver and his training with the bow in “Toxic.” The connection with Tess was icing on the cake.
  • In “Committed,” we hear Lois say that she loves Clark, regardless of her attachment to the lie detector or not. Their relationship throughout Season 8 might be one of the best things about this season.
  • In "Identity," Chloe/Brainiac giving Sebastian Kane a stroke to maintain Clark's secret identity.
  • We believe Clark rebuilding the Fortress of Solitude might possibly be the best scene this season, but definitely the best scene in "Abyss".
  • In "Legion," just having members of the Legion arrive and defeat Brainiac was good enough to make this list.
  • Besides Clark and Lana’s bed-breaking romp, "Requiem" provided us with the final ending to this love story.
  • The deception between Jimmy and Davis in "Turbulence" about whether or not Jimmy was going crazy was excellent.
  • Call us sick, but we enjoyed the scene between Davis, Clark and Chloe in "Eternal" where Chloe kills Davis with kryptonite.
  • Barring the disappointing fight between Doomsday and Clark, the episode "Doomsday" contained some incredible scenes between Oliver and Clark.

Our take on the worst? That's after the jump.

The Worst

  • Clark begins the season without his powers and it will happen time and time again, so "Odyssey" is just the beginning of the worst.
  • We couldn't really get behind the character Maxima in "Instinct."
  • Jimmy's attempt at discovering the Red-Blue Blur as it seemed more like a filler.
  • In "Bloodline," we lose Kara for the rest of the season, if not series, and this is bad.
  • We're just going to say it, Chloe and Jimmy's wedding -- bad.
  • The entire episode of "Bulletproof" seemed like a filler, and therefore, makes the worst list.
  • Due to the fact that almost everything in the episode "Infamous" was reversed/undone at the end, it smacked of an overexposed cameo appearance by Tori Spelling and nothing more.
  • Though Lois's outfit was nice, "Stiletto" amounted to very little as far as progressing the storyline.
  • "Beast" could have been one of the best episodes, but it teased us with a fight that never panned out (much like the finale).
  • Last, but certainly not least (in fact, perhaps THE worst), the finale fight between Doomsday and Clark. Too short, too confusing and ultimately disappointing.

We're sure we've missed some of your favorite moments from Season 8, and even a few of the scenes that make your stomach turn. So, here is your chance to set us straight. What were the best and worst moments from this season (and yes, thanks Steve for your complete lists of good and bad from the finale and the season)?

As far as the best goes, I'll agree with you guys on 7 out of 11. Where I disagree:

1.) I hated Davis Bloom. Sam Witwer is a terrible actor, and most of his scenes bored me tears. Thank God he's gone!

2.) Clark rebuilding the fortress was okay. To me the most best scene of the season was Lois admitting to Clark that she loves him. They could have done so much more with them, but they really dropped the balled in the sceond half of the season. I found it ridiculous that Lois is in 8 out of the first ten episodes, but only four of the last 12. I know Allison Mack is the "teacher's pet," but at this stage of the game, Erica Durance should be in every episode.

3.) The Lana arc was completely unneccessary. The ending really botched things up for Clark and Lois, because when they finally do get together, it now comes across like he's choosing her by default, because he and Lana can't be together.

4.) The Davis, Clark, and Chloe was so overacted and hammily bad that I ended up doing more cringing than crying.

As far as the bad of the season, I'll agree on six out of ten.

1.) I thought Jimmy looking for the identity of the Red-Blue Blur was a logical step, and it gave his character more of a purpose.

2.) I liked the idea of Chloe and Jimmy getting married. While I am not a huge fan of Allison Mack, due to what I feel has been overexposure (way too many episodes are focused on Chloe, when this is supposed to be a series about Clark), I did like Chloe and Jimmy as a couple. Breaking them up, and then giving Jimmy drug problem, was just beyond lame. Then they had her get over him way to quickly. By the very next episode, it was like Jimmy who? Then they do the reconcillation in the finale which goes against everything we had just seen in the last few episodes. It was handled very poorly.

3.) I really liked "Infamous." I didn't care for Tori Spelling, but the scenes between Clark and Lois were fantastic in that episode. I especially liked the scenes where Lois is pleading with him not to reset time. Erica was awesome.

4.) I liked "Stiletto." Thanks to the idiot writers killing off Jimmy in the finale, this was the only time we got to see Clark, Lois, and Jimmy fight side by side to stop the bad guys. I was hoping they would do more of the three of them together next season, but I guess now, that won't happen. I also liked Clark taking a bullet for Lois. It brought back memories of the really good episodes from the first half of the season.

You guys did leave one out on the worst. Killing Jimmy Olsen. That was the dumbest thing they could have done. Killing Jimmy makes absolutely no sense. They should be increasing his role on the series not decreasing it. Jimmy is the third most important character in the Superman comics behind only Clark and Lois. To me, it would have made more sense for them to kill Chloe off. They spent much of the second half of the season alienating her from the rest of the good guys in favor of Davis. Plus with her being Clark's best friend, Lois' cousin, and Jimmy's girlfriend, her death would be a way of bringing them closer together.

I also want to add an Amen to the fight between Clark and Doomsday. They built all season to this, and the fight lasts only a couple of minutes? Someone's head ought to roll for that.

I think this season was okay. I love love Sam Witwer as Davis Bloom. I know he is suppose to be a "villian" nut I think he just irrestible. he just wants to be normal and have love in his life. I really miss Lex as portrayed by the great Michael Rosenbaum. They said he would come back for a limited run and he never showed. I wish John Glover and Annette Toole were back on the show also. I also wish they would put more music back into the show. I think some of the strongest episodes in past seasons has great music behind them. It seems Smallville is missing passion. The Smallville season finale was disappointing, I hope the episode was a dream. It was confusing and turned the superman mythology on it's head. I hope next season is better.

Chloe and Clark apart like in 8th season is not working. Clark and Lois are fun to watch, but the actors don't have chemistry together. The kisses on 6th season were bad! Clark and Lana was great, but, let's face it, this ship has sailed. My favorite parts of 8th season were the jealous/tender scenes between Chloe and Clark, specially in Plastic, Toxic, Abyss, Bride, Infamous (Chloe telling Clark - If this is a goodbye, I'm not saying it - shows really what their relationship is about )... And late in the season, with Beast. My worse moment was watching the end of the season. The episode was such a disappointment! And watching Chloe suffering like that AGAIN, without Davis, Jimmy and Clark... poor girl, give her a slack! I want to see Clark and Lois and their love dance, but I wanna see Clark and Chloe together next season. Only for five epis... The girl has to have fun sometime! She's there only to suffer! Jeessss

I loved Jimmy's attempt at discovering the Red-Blue Blur! As Oliver said, someone had to make Clark "step up a little bit" =D Identity is one of my favorite episodes of this season.

The best scenes the whole season are the talks between Lois and the Red Blue Blur. I really really loved them. But I couldn't help wishing they were talking as Clark and Lois, for real.

Davis was the best thing about this season. After a while I started fast-forwarding through everything else. His "Eternal" suicide/death scene was beautiful. Too bad they ruined all that in the end. And yes, the lame Clark/DD fight was terrible.

whatever happened to lex really showing up? that made my worst list. truthfully, i really was not a fan of doomsday that much. i do agree about lots of the stuff this season just being filler, but i guess once you reach 150 episode, it gets harder to come up with stuff

The worst moment was when Smallville destroyed its own canon, making Davis Sageith when it was proven in the early seasons that Lex was Sageith. The poor fight in the finale (especially in contrast to the great fight between Clark and Bizzaro in S6/7, even in contrast to the short fight between Clark and Zod in S6) just went to show that the writers seem to have lost the plot altogether.

The best was certainly the developing relationship between Clark and Lois, and Clark gradually piecing together what it will mean to be a true superhero rather than the vigilantes he sometimes teams up with. But the chemistry of the show is dead without Lex, and just no longer working with Chloe, who has seemed like dead weight for the past 2 seasons.

The death of the faux Jimmy may actually be a masterstroke if the writers are planning to bring Clark back in years to come, when everyone who knew him at the Planet has moved on or forgotten what he looks like. Somehow they have to make Superman unrecognisable from Clark. Only Lois will remember his face without glasses and maybe something with her being in the future will change that. The season premiere of season 9 will thus determine whether this show sinks or swims. But with Zod returning in the S8 finale I can't imagine a ten year gap between the seasons and so I may be giving the writers more credit than they are due.

It's about time Clark left Smallville. His progression to Superman needs to move ahead. And it's about time they gave him flight. His powers discovery came quickly all except flight. Not sure it can survive another whole season but would be good to end with the suit andthe first introduction of Superman to the world.

I thought one of the best was the visitation of the Legion from the future, and I'm not even a comic fan. I also enjoyed Allison Mack's performance as Brainiac as well. Tres creepy in her wedding dress with the oily black eyes. Oliver's trip to the "dark side" was also an interesting character development. I'm eager to see where his character goes next season.

Some of the worst I felt included the whole arc with the return of Lana. I felt it was unnecessary and it gave me a feeling of one step forward, three steps back in Clark's story. The worst of all IMO was giving Lana the kryptonite infused power suit. Is there a reason Lana was made into a superhero? Again, it just seemed over the top and unnecessary. Time spent during that arc could have been used touching on more interesting storylines for characters that were supposed to be season regulars, when in fact we were lucky to see them in even half the episodes. I didn't enjoy the strange relationship between Chloe and Davis, although I did enjoy SW's portrayal of the Davis/Doomsday character and his downward spiral. I thought he was very good. Lastly, the marriage between Chloe and FauxJimmy that lasted all of two seconds was ridiculous. I just never felt the two had any chemistry whatsoever. It was like a junior high romance, sugary sweet, but not a lot of substance.

The best of Smallville is the introduction of Davis Bloome and the relationship between Davis and Chloe.and the death of jimmy The WORST of smallville is the ending story of Davis

The worst part of the season was that ridiculous Jimmy twist. I mean, killing off a main character is a classic twist that packs a punch, but really. When Smallville kills off a character that's part of Superman cannon and then says that yes, he was Jimmy Olsen, but his younger brother is THE Jimmy Olsen...how does that even remotely make sense?

I thought episode Committed was one of the best. Lois admitting she loves Clark. Only wish Clark had answered back.

I agree, the lois&clark relationship was one of the most enjoyable parts of season 8, its a shame they kinda screwed the lois and clark fans over as soon as lana got back, character growth? anyone? can we have some? we've waited 8 years...

The episodes where Lois and the red speak are always memorable.

The only thing I honestly remember about season 8 (and I've watched every single episode and am a pretty devoted fan) are the scenes between Clark and Lana (because ultimately, she is the woman behind Superman. Lois becomes his future, but he'd have been nothing without Lana and enduring the pain left behind because of their relationship) and Davis. He was the best thing to happen to this show since...ever. I am so sick of Tom Welling as Clark. Growth, Tom. Characters grow. When nothing changes after eight seasons, it's time to reevaluate your performance.

Then again, without Lex, the entire series is crap. The remaining actors just can't carry the show. Personally, I'd like Oliver and Davis to get a spin-off. What? It makes as much sense as everything else they've done to ruin the story of Clark Kent/Superman. And at least those two can act.

Chlavis and Davis Bloome was the best for Smallville, they rock, Chloe and Davis forever.

I know that "Infamous" wasn't that great of an episode, but we got to see Davis(Doomsday) suffocate Tori Spelling. That has to count for something.

The season finale was very disappointing. Hopefully Doomsday will be resurrected by Zod next season for a bit of a better fight.

Editor, I agree 100% with you about everything in this post. Essencially, about the fight Clark vs Doomsday. It was not only the worst moment of the season 8. It was the worst moment of the history of the series.
