Smallville Big Bad Bracket Returns!

Welcome to the Smallville Big Bad Bracket, where we pit characters, concepts, plot devices and inanimate objects against each other to determine who (or what) was the biggest bad-ass of the season.

Much like the famed NCAA basketball bracket, we pair competitors up in a single-elimination contest. You vote on who you think would win each pairing. The winner advances to the next round, while the loser retires to lick his/hers/its literal and metaphysical wounds.

You'll notice we don't include the main characters, for a couple of reasons. First of all, what's the point of pitting anyone up against the Superman or Lex Luthor? It's no contest! Second, we didn't include the leading ladies of Smallville in the Big Bad Bracket because, quite frankly, we didn't want to start World War III. We're wimpy that way.

With that out of the way, check out the Big Bad Bracket. Vote for your favorites, and see who or what advances to the next round! This week, we're starting with the first eight competitors in The Scum and Villainy Division. The polls close in one week, so get voting!

Mob Boss Manheim
This ruthless killer and mob boss took the stage this season in “Stiletto”, almost killing Lois and Jimmy. He got locked up in the end – but will he remain behind bars, or will he be back to wreak his revenge?

Island Invader Marcos
Criminal bad-ass Marcos knew how to bear a grudge. He stormed Oliver’s desert island all those years ago up to no good, then reappeared in Metropolis years later to poison him and attempt to take our Tess, who used to go by Mercy and had been a lot less formidable. Marcos turned Oliver into a hero – and may have turned Tess into a villain.

Parasite
A small guy with the ability to absorb Clark’s powers on contact, Parasite really made a splash in his limited time on screen. Lucky for Clark, Green Arrow had a kryptonite ring to stop the little power-sucking bug.

Zod’s arrival
In a show like Smallville, the best things happen when beings not of this world interact with this world. And who better than the General himself? That’s right, Season 8 left us with Zod finally appearing. BOOM!

Doomsday
The biggest enemy of the season was undoubtedly Doomsday, the beast within Davis Bloom. He had superstrength, and invulnerable hide, a lust for blood and even a kick-ass villain name… but the last fight left much to be desired. We can’t help but think (hope?) that we haven’t seen the last of this beast.

Brainiac
Alas, James Marsters as Brainiac’s host was gone, but the villainous intelligence still wreaked plenty of havoc: It takes over Chloe and prompts her to almost destroy the planet, then leaks out of Chloe’s ear and taints the Fortress of Solitude. It even assists Doomsday and may have willed Chloe to kill Sebastian Kane.

Obsession
Obsession popped up over and over in Season 8: Tess’ obsession with Clark/Red Blue Blur; Davis Bloom’s obsession with Chloe; Lana’s obsession with power… the list goes on. Let this be a lesson: obsessing over anything, even if it’s an alien suit of power, is bad news.

Police corruption
Even Metropolis isn’t immune from police corruption – some crooked cops almost got John Jones killed, so Clark and Oliver stepped in to help. Hey, at least we finally got to see Clark in uniform… although it wasn’t the uniform we’ve been waiting for.
