Life Unexpected: Father Unfigured

Lux totally knows what's going on, even if Baze and Cate don't.

Well, well, well, if it isn't another week of Cate issues. We're going to give her a pass because she's getting married in a few days, and she's spent considerably less time than the average woman being a bridezilla. But seriously, can anyone else have problems on this show and actually express discontent? In any case, it was nothing an 80s sing-a-long and some pinot grigio couldn't fix.

Besides, it's only natural that someone might feel a twinge uncomfortable seeing their father for the first time in over two decades...

So Cate discovered that her father had sent her birthday cards and her mother had hidden them in the attic. Since that automatically means that he was dying to be there for twenty-plus years, Cate assumes that he's still a blue-ribbon father deep down. With her wedding day coming down to the wire, Cate decides to go out and find him with Lux. There's only one catch: Baze has to come too.

Turns out some of Bug's old juvenile-delinquent regulars stopped by looking for trouble and trashed Baze's bar. Bug asks Lux to distract Baze while he cleans the mess, which means Lux ends up lying to get Baze on the trip. She makes up some story about how she's never had a family road trip and it's a good opportunity for some quality time before Cate's wedding. Cate and Baze give in and the three head off. We're glad the parents can overlook their personal issues with each other to make Lux happy. They're finally acting like, oh, we don't know...parents?

The trip out does end up being some hokey good fun involving corn dog stands and chickens, but things get a little rocky when we meet Cate's dad, Grant. Grant seems nice and Cate gets a little ahead of herself inviting him to her wedding. Grant agrees to come back to Portland with them the next day, but Baze isn't so certain. He tells Lux that Grant doesn't seem like he wants to be a father, and decides to tell Cate the same. Naturally, Cate gets mad at Baze and tells him to leave.

The next day, Cate and Lux get stood up at their bed and breakfast by Grant, who leaves a message that something came up. The two girls get a cab to his house, only to find that that something was fishing. Grant says that he never wanted to be a father, he just wanted to live life by his own rules. Frankly, we're not surprised.

Cate then does what she does best: the blame game. She tells Grant that she had been blaming Baze for letting her down her whole life, but it was Grant all along. When she turns to leave she finds Baze waiting. Expecting the worst, he stuck around in his car all night to make sure his two ladies were okay. He's almost as cute as Ryan. Almost.

Impressed with her parents' big hearts and personal growth, Lux decides to become officially adopted. They all share some long-awaited "I love you's" and we teared up a smidge. The little-family-that-could is finally coming along.

Oh, and one more thing: Baze definitely still cares for Cate and Lux has figured it out. Time is ticking away before the big wedding. What is a love-lorn single father to do?
