One Tree Hill finale: The healing power of love (and snow)

One Tree Hill learned its lesson last season -- don't ever end a season with all plots resolved and everything tied up with a pretty bow. This year, they made sure we had some loose ends to keep us going over the summer -- because yes, it does look like the show will be back. But first, let's dive into the season finale!

What we loved

Snow makes everything better
It's nice to see the Tree Hillians get out of town every once in a while, and the setting they descended on was pretty spectacular. The sledding, the snowball fights, the snow fort... we almost wish it was winter again. And when you can get Chicagoans to wish for snow in mid-May, you're doing something right.

Haley's reemergence
OK, so Haley did take up residence at the bottom of the pool at the end of last episode -- and apparently, that -- and Nathan dragging her out of the water in a panic -- was the step she needed to take to start coming out of her depression. "I was just trying to feel something. Alive, I guess," she tells the disembodied shrink. Did it make her feel alive? "No. But it made me want to," she says. We'll take it!

There's more after the jump: Read on!

The trip to Utah with the rest of the gang was Haley's coming out-of-her-funk party, and even if we have reservations about her seeing her mom in a giant owl, we're glad to have her back. (Seriously, folks -- that owl was huge. And those birds are called raptors for a reason. They'll rip your face off! Nature is scary, and don't you forget it!) And to top it all off, she's pregnant and happy! Yay!

Julian's success
OK, we're on the Julian bandwagon now. We love that Julian is so self-deprecating and can actually buy that he was a giant nerd-boy in high school who is shocked that he's suddenly made good. Take this little gem, as he gets ready for the screening:

My whole life my hair's been out to get me, like it resents my forehead for taking up too much room.

Snerk!

So yes, we were thrilled that everyone loved the screening, and that he got the round of applause he so richly deserved. We got a little misty-eyed when Paul talked about watching him soar. And yes, we squealed with delight when he proposed to Brooke. So romantic! Go Brulian!

Jamie being a kid
Once again, the show let Jamie be a kid again, and that's the way it should be. He said some heartfelt things, like when he told Haley how pretty she was when she smiled, and how he missed that, but he didn't seem wise beyond his years. And we loved everything he had to say about Julian's movie:

Jamie: I don't get it - you made a movie with no animation, no stunts, no cars that transform into stuff, no aliens and no rabbits. What the heck else is there?
Julian: Romance?
Jamie: I don't think anyone wants to see that.

and later...

Jamie: They're kissing. They've been doing a lot of that. Seriously, you could have used a robot or something.

Plus, Jamie in the tiny matador suit (and what the hell was that doing in a mountain town in Utah?) = comedy gold.

Mouth as comic relief
This is how we like Mouth -- in small doses, and bringing the funny. Just that shot of him dancing rapturously in Skills' stolen furball coat made us giggle uncontrollably.

Things we weren't as thrilled about

Quinn, meet frostbite
There were moments when we really liked Quinn in this episode -- principally the scene at the club, where she had this sad, sad look on her face as Skills brought her back to Clay with the words "She was sexy until she started dancing." But then they had the goofy walking-into-town-in-a-bikini sequence, and dude, did you not see the snow? It's cold out there! She would have been losing extremities!

We continue not to care about Grubbs
Seriously, if it didn't violate the requirements of our jobs, we'd be fast-forwarding any scenes involving Grubbs and/or Miranda. We like the music, we don't care about the characters. Worse, we used to like Mia, but the longer she's hanging with Grubbs, the less we care about her. Quit that!

The looming triangle
We kind of care about Chase. We grudgingly are starting to almost not dislike Alex. We used to like Mia, before she was tainted with Grubbiness. But a Chase/Alex/Mia love triangle? Sorry, we don't care enough about these characters for it to make a dent.

You have locks, now use them
Remember how thrilled we were when we saw Clay change the locks on his front door? That's great, Clay, but it only helps if you actually use them. We were concerned when we saw the French doors open on the beach house -- after all, they'd just dealt with StalKatie. We figured that they must know that she'd been locked up in the loony bin or something.

Alas -- it was more likely that they just have no concept of personal security, because at the end of the ep, StalKatie's got a gun, and she shoots both Quinn and Clay. It's probably not a good sign that our immediate concern wasn't for Clay and Quinn's survival, but about what their deaths would do to a still-fragile Haley.

So no one on here thinks that both the Quinn character and the actress that plays her are nothing to write home about? She always seems stiff and uncomfortable--and not like she grew up as a James. If they have to add another female, go with the Alex character (despite her ridiculous antics and melodrama). She seems much more comfortable in her skin, with her comedic timing, and as an actress. Unfortunately I think Quinn/Shantel is draining all the life out of Clay/Robert. He's good on soapy shows, he was great on Lipstick Jungle and had great chemistry with Kim Raver. The Quinn/Clay chemistry fizzles, but I think he as an actor has a lot more to add to the show and is stuck treading water while the writers try and work with Shantel. Sophia Bush's character does a great job of pulling the natural talent out of Julian. Just like Nathan always seems to do his best acting in scenes with Haley. Robert Buckley's comedy and passion that shine through in scenes with Nathan and the other male characters has potential. I worry that eventually the writers will just cut them both b/c the they don't work as a couple. I do agree that the scene where Quinn comes back from dancing with Skills works brilliantly--but I think it also proves my point. The actress just isn't there yet, so when a moment works and doesn't feel forced and stiff--it's because it's captured from a natural chemistry-filled moment that the cast is just having in spite of the cameras all around them. Skills never did deliver the written lines well--it's his improve that works for the show's comedic moments and that's what made that face she made shine (b/c she was responding to him for real)! She had some of that in the scene after her crazy dancing at the high school gym, but again it was b/c of Robert Buckley's ad libbing. I wonder how the cast would do when just given the framework for the scene and allowed to improve like the cast at Friday Night Lights and Parenthood do?

I am a fan of the show, I am glad that CW is supporting it and giving it yet another chance to grow. And I understand that nighttime soaps need really attractive actors to survive, but they have to be able to ACT and at the very least seem comfortable and natural in what they are doing! Even reality tv star Chase does a better job at fitting in on screen than Shantel. If they don't build back up the strength of the major supporting characters (suggestion, focus more on Alex and let Quinn be in a coma, giving Robert Buckley a chance to flex his acting muscles without being tied down my Shantel's lack of natural ability)--next season will be its last b/c it will lose the portion of the fans who were lucas-peyton followers and stuck around to see if they could find something else to latch onto.

Btw, the Haley writing and directing was great. I think I remember reading that she directed one of those mournful episodes. Even with all the inconsistencies--not calling Peyton, not having Lucas at he funeral or even the rewrite of the size of her family--she did a great, emmy-worthy job with the material. One good thing about not bringing back Hilarie Burton--Joy Lenz moves out of the C position and into A position and we get a chance to see how she's the most talented dramatic actress on the show (sophia bush for comedy hands-down, but Kudos for her for wanting to keep exploring movies and remaining in the B position). Before we only got bits and pieces of this from Haley. As sad as it will be, they should keep feeding her drama. Big Sis in a coma will give her the opportunity to be torn b/t mourning and joy over the new baby. She does conflicted well.

I'm a fan, have always been. Just get rid of the lackluster Quinn character and I'm still on board.

People who say that 'her mom hasn't been around much' etc. are wrong. We don't see everything that happens. Nathan mentions family dinners and Jamie mentions having Christmas with the family and Haley also mentions talking to her mom on the phone. She was close with her mom regardless of what we saw on screen and it affects her.

Thank You, Megan. I was waiting for someone to suggest that Haley should've talked to Peyton. In fact, she should've called her instead of her mom's voicemail. Also, if she didn't call Peyton, Nathan definitely should have. Haley always talked to Peyton before and they could've easily brought back Hilarie Burton for one episode. Could've said that her and Luke didn't think it was a good idea for Sawyer to be around at such a sad time and that they agreed that he should stay with her. They could've said that Luke was writing or that he had a meeting; something like that. However, I don't know why Haley was so devastated anyway. Yeah, her mom died, but she knew it was going to happen. She got to say goodbye. Besides, her mom hasn't been around that much since she was 17.

I don't meant Naley wedding, but Haley pregnant.

So this was the finale? Huh. Compared to Supernatural's finale, this was... well... there's no way to fairly compare the two, so I'll just drop that train of thought.

One thing I can say I enjoy about this season is that it actually made me really like Haley and Nathan. And Brooke. I wasn't anti-them before, but they were never my favorites. I suppose with Lucas and Peyton out of the way, there's room for me to like other people, but still. I like that.

The new characters this season grew on me. It took a while, but they did. I kinda like Alex, I kinda like Clay, and I kinda like Quinn. Ringing endorsements, I know.

I liked this episode. It was heart-warming and nice. I'm very glad they didn't draw out the Haley drama 'cause that would've gotten really old, really fast. Something I've been thinking about for a while, though... Haley's mom died of cancer, right? You know who would have been a great person for her to talk to? PEYTON. She's dealt with mother deaths twice now, one of which died of cancer, too! But, alas.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who finds Jamie's random bursts of wisdom to be confusing and completely unrealistic. I liked seeing him be a 7 year old in this episode.

The Brulian stuff was cute, too. It's refreshing to like Brooke for once. I've pretty much always liked Julian. And I like seeing her finally get her dream wedding. That's been a long time in coming.

I want Grubbs' songs in my iTunes. Right now. Because they rock. But his emo can end.

Mia can go away. I hate that whole "I miss us" thing. It's desperate, and whiny, and stupid. Chase, on the other hand... I dunno. He's fine. And I don't mind him with Alex.

Quinn and Clay... eh. Whatever. I was fine until the very end when One Tree Hill, once again, played out the "Things That Would Never Happen In Real Life" card and had them get shot. To be honest, all I did was laugh at that part.

Overall, good episode. Am I gonna watch next season? Hmm. Maybe if I have absolutely nothing else to do. That's a big maybe, though. I'm still of the opinion that the show should've just ended after season 4.

You know what's pitiful. I'm more worried about Chuck on "Gossip Girl" than Clay and Quinn on "One Tree Hill." Clay and Quinn are cute sometimes like when he proves he knows so much about her with the whole key and losing things situation, but Chuck and Blair are great and epic like Lucas and Peyton.

I liked this episode. It's not so much that I care about the characters anymore, but that I'm just looking for a satisfying ending. Since they got rid of Lucas and Peyton, the show's not a thrill for me anymore. I totally agree with Vanessa that it's weird that they don't even talk about them. I think it's even weirder that they don't have any pictures of them around. I'm happy that Brooke will get her happy ending and Haley will probably have a girl that she can name after her mother. I felt the same way about Clay/Quinn's shooting. I was worried about how Haley and Nathan would feel if they die. It's true; who would come to Clay's house in the middle of the night? How many people have ever visited him? The whole time I've seen the show it's just been mostly him and Quinn there. I like Grubbs and Miranda. That is, I like them way better than Chase and Mia. The writers should do better with Chase and Alex. Make me care about them! Chase and Mia didn't have any chemistry. Besides, I like Alex when she's not a slut. She's a lot like Brooke. Bring back Millie the way she used to be and give Mouth his happy ending. Also, please bring in a black girl for Skills. I have to say that I was scared for Haley when she went up to that owl and I was praying that it wouldn't claw her eyes out. Mia should just leave town and everyone else's storylines should get wrapped up. Wrap up the drama and don't cause any more. After this bit of drama's over, the last season should be light and funny. We want to give this great show a great ending.

ok so idk about quinn but clay got shot in the chest. looks like the heart. i hope quinn survives or else haley will kill herself for sure. clay better survive too he's way too hot to die. i dont think the show could deal with losing them. also wtf was chase doing there? i dont like him. i like grubbs more than him and that's saying something. i also was obsessed with the beginning montage of naley.

I'm in shock right now. i was SO HAPPY when julian proposed to Brooke, i literally screamed. and im so happy that haley's pregnant. but when clay and quinn got shot i was in total shock...how can they do that? i love them as a couple, I think that they're adorable. I dont want more sadness on OTH, haleys been through enough. Also chace needs to be with mia, i hope he chooses her over alex, altho im sure he'll pick alex at least at first. also PLEASE GET RID OF GRUBBS. ive never cared about him or his relationship with british amanda. i like his music, but i dont want this story. WOW there had better be a season 8!! rock on OTH :)

I really liked this ep. it reminded me of season 3 when rachel invited everyone to stay at her guest house.

i loved skills and mouth, i liked that they were hanging with clay. i loved the amount of clay and quinn we got (ie not to much). i LOOOOOOOVED the naley sequence while haley was in the pool and the overall emphasis of naley (squee!). it felt very old-style oth.
jamie was amamzing, cute and the fun in the snow was great.
for some reason (*cough* the-cw-keeps-interupting-weekly-eps-of-oth*cough*) i havnt felt the consistance and therefore apprecition of brulian as a couple. so im kinda wateva.
OMG MIA HAS TO LEAVE THE SHOW! just say she 'was there' - dont show her. and grubbs, yeh i like him but not the mir/grb story, but its seems to be over. Chase and Alex - not sure, dont think i care. Id be happy to never see either of those 2 again.
NALEY BABY!!!
of all the stalker-i-am-threatening-the-lives-of-oth-people i feel the katie/sarah thing is awesome. but a happt resolve soon will eliminate the notion of 'never dying/going away' that nann carrie story line had.

over all, lots of cool surpirse, not lof changes, lots of old oth reminiscence so i was happyily entertained!
xx thx 4 the pods.

Oh Gosh! I SO Missed Haley's smile as well hehe! I was really happy she was coming back to herself this epi ... at the end, damnn! Thought at her as well .. I don't think they'll kill her sister, maybe Clay, I really don't mind that much so I don't know ... I wanna be happy Haley was close to happy this epi as well hehe! ;)
Liked Jamie, liked Julian! Liked his proposal, GO HIM! .. It was quite amazing so yay for that!
Oh, reallyy like the Naley flashbacks at the beginning, those ones so did it for me! It's a Good show hehe! ;)
Hmm .. and a 2nd Naley baby! I think it was about time though like I said I did like Jamie so Idk .. Gotta wait and see. Hope Haley doesn't go down hill again cause of Katie-girl. But Seriously?? Eeeh, I didn't like that part that much but oh well ...

Hm ... Oh Grubs! haha! I DO Like his music anyway; I may not be THAT into his storylines but I do like his stuff, since last season finale with the opening montage to 'War Sweater' to this season with the 'Almost Everything' one; I LIKED that! That's one thing I have always liked about the show, they have GOOD feautured music so IMO; they can SO get rid of the Grubs character (leave him stay in London hehe) BUT keep his music coming, I like it, can't help it hehe ;)

.And I guess that's it. Actually looking forward to next season. Mostly cause of Haley & Brooke, cause ... eek, they're pretty much the part of the show I still care about!
Will be nice to see Brooke finallyyy be happy hehe! ;)

xoxo

I cannot understand why viewers don't really care about Quinn and Clay, I love them. They should def. bring Lucas and Peyton back next season. It's so weird that they never get mentioned

I don't know who you people are, but get out of my head!

1)Grubbs? Not interested. 2)I have been waiting years for Mouth's role to dwindle. He doesn't completely suck, but he's pretty close. His level of participation in the last episode was spot-on. I have to admit I don't really love Skillz either - he is just toooo stereotype for me. 3)Even though she looks a leeeetle bit too much like psycho Nanny Carrie, Alex is starting to grow on me -but I am over Millicent and I really hope they lose the ugly kid with the 'fro. And finally, 4)Yes it was a shock when crazy girl shot Quinn and Clay, but as soon as I picked up the remote that I'd dropped to the floor in surprise, I said - OMG Haley how can they do this to you?

"It's probably not a good sign that our immediate concern wasn't for Clay and Quinn's survival, but about what their deaths would do to a still-fragile Haley."
Exactly my thoughts. Through my bursts of laughter (because, seriously, that was how they chose to end this mainly happy-go-lucky ep?) my only thoughts were for Haley. Even if they are as fine as they can be from being shot, still not a good path for her to go down.

Here's my take. Quinn went down. OK. But Clay went back into the door and there was blood. I also don't like that it was bedtime, and no one would notice they had been shot at least until morning, when it would be too late. But if either of them are to die, it'd be Clay based on how it was shown. But... they're like main characters and Haley's mom just died, so I guess they both live.

And, on a side note, how pissed do you think the people of Gossip Girl were when they saw that OTH also ended their finale with a shocking shooting?

I really hope Clay&Quinn both will survive the shooting. Loved them in this eppy, for example the last scene 'Without you I'd be the one who's lost'. Katie should get arrested!
I loved the Brulian proposal ans the Naley wedding!
It was a great episode, one of the best ones of the season!
I'm looking forward to season 8.

You almost always say exactly everything I was thinking! I really really hope they wrap up the Grubbs storyline in the first episode so that we can spend all of our camera time with the characters who are actually important. And isn't it great to have drama in Tree Hill again! I love it! I don't think that the would kill of Clay or Quinn, but they looked like they were both shot in the heart so thats not good! I'm dying for season 8!!!!!!!

Oooooommmiigoosh! I just about died at the end of this episode! And like you, my first thought was how quinn's death is going to effect Haley.... And Jamie I guess. Speaking of Jamie: now that yet another (two other actually) friend of his has died, Jamie can be all serious and giving advice and not being able to be a kid (ah! Why why why, he's like 7!) yet agian. Ugh
and yay for brulian!!!
Double yay for Nathan and Haley too!
But still, very concerned about Haley. On the slim chance that Quinn does survive, Haley is still kinda... I don't know, she's not totally stable yet.
