Bonus Glee Podcast: What's next?

Listen Now

Look! A bonus podcast! Janine, Lindsey and I tackle what we want to see, and what we hope we don't see, next season on Glee. Will we watch if they bring in a new cast of singers? Can a show like this sustain itself over the long run? And will Glee be more British "Skins" or "Saved By The Bell: The New Class?"

Glee Podcast: "New York"

Listen Now

The kids hit the Big Apple on Glee, which entails original songs, a few appearances on Broadway stages, a "shocking" kiss, and a marked lack of heckling. Every time we've been to New York, there's been heckling.

We're torn on the episode. There were some sweet parts -- Rachel and Fin's date, Kurt and Rachel's duet and Shue's realization, among others -- and parts we weren't so thrilled with. Exhibit A: Original songs. We get why the show is doing it (and it involved buckets of cash), but we can't help but feel that it lessens our enjoyment of the show. What's the point if you can't sing along?

Lindsey, Janine and I dissect what we liked, what we didn't, and what we think of when everyone else is thinking about, say, the thrill of being on a major stage (I was thinking "Look out for Teamsters!") Take a listen, then tell us whether you agree or disagree with our assessment of the finale.

Glee Podcast: "Funeral"

Listen Now

Oh, Glee, why must you make us weep openly? It's not fair to deploy WIlly Wonka when we're emotionally invested -- that's bound to bring on the waterworks!

Seriously, Jeanie's funeral was wonderfully touching, but we're a bit bummed that the show had to knock her off to make Sue human again. Maybe if she hadn't descended so far into caricature (Really, Sue? Libya?), they wouldn't have had to take such drastic measure. Lindsey, Janine and I also discuss song choices (Lindsey and I loved Kurt's song, while Janine was unimpressed), Jesse's attractiveness, Schue's potential fate (why pack up everything if you only think you'll be gone for a few months at most?) and Mercedes' and Rachel's awesome pipes. Plus, what's Quinn planning, and will any of us survive her wrath?

One Tree Hill Podcast: "This Is My House, This Is My Home"

Listen Now

One Tree Hill gave us a lovely, elegiac series finale... and then ruined it by telling us they were coming back next year. Darcel and I don't get it. Everyone's finally happy. Why do you want to screw that up? What more do you have to say? How many more times can you make Brooke cry, or have Jamie teach us a valuable lesson? Will you unload a whole psych ward full of stalkers to give the final season that little bit of extra frisson? Why have the show come full circle so beautifully if you're just going to make it spin out of control again? What gives?

As you might have guessed, we're grumpy about the show's renewal. But are we right? Listen and find out!

Gossip Girl Podcast: "The Wrong Goodbye"

Listen Now

The season finale of Gossip Girl left us with a few genuine surprises, a few lingering questions, and the last suspenseful hostage drama of all time. Seriously, does Russell Thorpe honestly think he's a bad-ass? Because he folded like a cheap suit when Raina deployed her puppy-dog eyes. Feh.

Lindsey, Janine and I discuss true love (is it tempestuous dram and occasional crashed bar mitzvahs, or is it someone who will wait at a party for hours because he believes in you?), true narcissism (seriously, Serena had to get Nate and Dan to schlep out to school so she could tell them... nothing?), true guile (we seriously didn't see the Charlie reveal coming) and true hate (there's nothing redeeming about Vanessa. Out!). Plus, we argue about Serena's vacation plans and job prospects, wonder about the pregnancy test, and debate the changes in Eric's physique over the past seasons. All that, plus Georgina! Wheee!

One Tree Hill Podcast: "Flightless Bird, American Mouth"

Listen Now

One Tree Hill wound up a lot of plotlines this week, and Darcel and I are nonplussed. All that buildup for a fistfight in a creek? That's IT? And then there's Quinn -- who in the writers' room has she pissed off that she gets stuck with these plotlines? Maybe she should send them a cookie bouquet or something to get on their collective good side. Plus, Darcel and I discuss Brooke's miracle pregnancy, awkward conversations, the Air Force's seriously lax drug tests, Jamie's sporting life, ways to bring back Dan, and the natural habitat of the stripey and/or snipey plover. (I really hope it's snipey. That just sounds like the sort of bird I could respect.)

Glee Podcast: "Prom Queen"

Listen Now

It's Friday, Friday prom time on Glee, and the show gives us a memorable night both musically and dramatically. Who knew "Friday" could be so fun? Or that Lindsey and Janine could almost come to blows over an Adele cover? (Seriously, I was thinking I'd need to call in reinforcements to separate them...)

The Gleeks step in for Air Supply and provide some gorgeously sung, if occasionally thematically inappropriate, numbers for their peers to dance to. We loved Brittany's non-date plan, although we sympathize with Tina when she was attempting to pull her off Mike Chang. We also appreciate the non-cheesy version of "Isn't She Lovely", and we LOVED Kurt's outfit. We're less thrilled about what happened to him, and we have a bit of a debate on whether Karofsky knew it was coming. Still, for all the drama -- and the inexpertly spiked punch -- the ep was a hell of a lot more fun than our proms! What about yours?

Gossip Girl Podcast: "The Princess and the Frog"

Listen Now

We had plenty to debate about this week's Gossip Girl. Has Chuck hit bottom? When was the last time we saw him so... rapey? Can someone get Serena a hobby? Why does Serena sometimes morph into her evil twin for no apparent reason? Does Vanessa just accidentally end up in the same bookstore as Dan, or is she actively stalking him? Why do they keep calling Louis French if he's from Monaco, which is an independent state? What happened to Blair's hair? Why would Charlie set her sights on Dan, not Nate? And who the hell names their band "Panic"? All that, plus, a discourse on the between-the-sheets potential of the Princes Harry and William!

One Tree Hill Podcast: "Where Not to Look for Freedom"

Listen Now

We had some juicy plot developments this week on One Tree Hill, but we're guessing we won't know for sure how they'll pan out until we hear whether OTH is back for season nine. Will the River Court be condo-ized? Will Brooke and Julian move to New York? Will Nate go all Dan on Ian's ass? And will someone, for the love of all that is holy, make sure that Quinn never sings again?

Darcel and I speculate on the answers to all these questions, plus postulate about skateboard chauffeurs, reincarnated wives, ways to terrify a baby, where Mouth's next career move might take him, who's really responsible for the crash, and how a season nine might work. Plus, more plot ideas from Darcel! You know you love them...

Glee Podcast: "Born This Way"

Listen Now

Glee super-sized its episode this week, and actually, we didn't mind. We were loving Kurt's return, although we were less than thrilled about the grand piano that just happened to be in the courtyard. (Actually, Lindsey was smitten enough with Darren Criss that she didn't care about that little suspension of disbelief moment.) But oh, his song! Also, shout-out to PFLAG! Let's hope Karofsky gets with the program (and doesn't have to put on the red satin jacket and beret again...)

For the rest of the episode? We had questions. We're confused about Santana's plan to become prom queen, and split on Zizes' reaction to Quinn's disdain. Were you surprised the Quinn got outed as a former ugly duckling? What's it going to take for Santana to out herself? Was "Butt Chin" really the only thing Mr. Schue could think of for his t-shirt? (We have suggestions...) Will Emma take to therapy? How does a flash mob improve self-esteem? Where oh where was Sue? Will we ever be free from the tyranny of Gaga? And where can we get "Likes boys" and "I'm with Stupid (down arrow)" t-shirts?

Gossip Girl Podcast: "Petty in Pink"

Listen Now

So, did you see that Blake Lively died her hair a rather unfortunate shade of red? Oh, and how about that royal wedding? That whole story of a commoner marrying a prince... oh, wait, were we supposed to be talking about something? What was that...oh, right, Gossip Girl! That!

Look, we're easily distracted this week, because this ep didn't give us much to focus on. Lily discovered that her "friends" were evil and uncaring (we could have told her that), Blair used Dan to cover up her relationship with the Prince (that didn't go well), Dan finally kicked Vanessa to the curb (hallelujah!), and Charlie questioned, then bought into, the ethos of the Upper East Side. We kind of failed to care. Maybe next week?

We were tempted to splice in a bunch of clips from old One Tree Hill podcast and call it a day, but in the end, we're professionals. (Also, we decided that would take too much work.) Instead, Darcel and I rail against the overuse of flashbacks, then wonder what it takes to be on the OTH writing staff, because they obviously got to take a lot of time off. Why don't WE have the sort of jobs where we just have to come up with one decent line about pandas and then we can call it a day?

Until Schwahn hired us (which is looking less likely by the minute), we spend our time dissecting the few new bits of this episode, express our frustration at fickle birth moms, and wonder just what the heck was going on with that whole cracker-eating scene. Seriously. What was that?

Glee Podcast: "Night of Neglect"

Listen Now

We're not sure the folks on Glee understand quite what "neglected" means. How else do you explain people performing songs by Aretha and Adele? Those ladies are many things, but neglected is not among them.

We were hoping that the neglected members of the cast (cough, Tina, cough) would get a chance to show off, but apparently we needed to spend the time on Gwyneth (who really shouldn't attempt Adele) and Mercedes (who should sing Aretha all the time.) Plus, the had the thoroughly ineffective Legion of Doom, a strange diva-demands subplot, and either Gwyneth or Ryan Murphy pitching out a plea for people to stop being mean to them on the internet. Dudes, you're famous and fabulously wealthy. The "hatahs" come with the territory. Suck it up.

Why oh why is Vanessa even on Gossip Girl anymore? She apparently just pops in to muck about in the Upper East Siders' lives, and to annoy the crap out of us. Come on, Vanessa, don't you have a commune to join somewhere? Please?

In other news, Serena's long-lost cousin Charlie shows up, and she's got a secret! Chuck's plan to get Blair back backfires, and we're not entirely sure why. Blair's Prince Charming arrives in New York, so Chuck may have bigger problems than misplaced scheming. Dan wavers between pining over Blair, then apparently transferring his affections to the new girl. (Fickle, fickle Dan...) Plus, Lily tries to distract herself form her impending jail time with a celebrity photo shoot (as you do...), and we learn that Lily's sister, Carol, wasn't the free-spirited bohemian we thought. Also, Raina is making booty calls to Nate's place, which gets awkward when she runs into Chuck. Maybe it's time to look into getting your own place, Nate...

Glee Podcast: "Sexy"

Listen Now

We had some problems with this episode of Glee. Lindsey hated that Rachel seems to have forgotten that she railed against the chastity club in the first season. Janine despises Gwyneth's character. And me? I'm despairing that this ep made me use the phrase "kids today" without irony or sarcasm. You're making me old, show!

But that just meant there was plenty to talk about. We gab about sex ed, appropriate vs. inappropriate musical choices, what's wrong with Emma, why the chastity club storyline really didn't work for us, why John Stamos (briefly) lost his allure, and who was the only adult worth listening to on the entire show. Plus discover why Blaine's test audience may not have been as impartial as he hoped (and thanks, Lindsey, for THAT mental image.)

One Tree Hill manages to frustrate the hell out of us just before jumping into the hiatus. Not only does it diss one of Darcel's favorite shows (and they will RUE THE DAY!), but Haley hits us with far too many pregnancy drills, Chase and random new guy poke fun at a nine-year-old in glasses, Chloe shows up unannounced inside Brooke and Julian's house, and Millie takes the words right out of Mouth's, well, mouth. Gossip Girl leaves us with a whole bunch of cliffhangers before it goes on spring break: Will Lily really go to jail? What's Billy Baldwin doing back in the picture? How furious will Chuck be when he discovers Blair kissed Dan? Actually, how furious are we that Blair kissed Dan? (answer: Pretty damn furious on my part, not terribly peevish on Lindsey and Janine's part.) Brooke gets unrighteously angry at her friends after her lies (and lies of omission) are exposed, but she STILL gets a kid. Only on One Tree Hill, folks... Granted, it helps when you've got someone giving you a toast that starts off with "Thanks for saving my kid's life..."  Hard to argue against that one.

In other news, Julian chases butterflies and is adorable, Jamie dominates baseball and is adorable, Haley geeks out over Little League and is adorable, Ian Kellerman bonds with Jamie and is adorable less objectionable, and Clay and Quinn find Coma Grove, which is just plain perplexing. Glee Podcast: "Blame It On The Alcohol"

Listen Now

Glee strays perilously close to Afterschool Special territory with this episode about the perils of teen (and adult) drinking, but they manage to skate by without straying too far into the Very Special Episode wasteland. It helps that their demonstration of the perils of demon booze involved synchronized puking to Ke-dollar-sign-ha, and that even the adults got a glimpse of what can go wrong when you have access to both liquor and a phone. It also helps that they didn't pretend that most self-respecting teens would swear off all booze after a single bad experience. Plus, the ep managed to be pretty damn funny -- you had to love the categorization of Drunk Chicks.(For the record, Lindsey and I are pretty much Happy Drunks, and Janine? Well, we have some theories...)

That's not to say we didn't have quibbles -- like when has a teen ever imbibed Bloody Marys, or why would Broadway Baby Rachel think that a paean to the headband would be song-worthy? And good god, what was that dress Rachel was wearing? Also, even those of us who normally adore Kurt got a little annoyed with his attitude toward Burt questioning his sleepover protocol. But come on -- any episode that featured Figgins saying "Ke-dollar-sign-ha" and "Tik and also Tok" -- not to mention Beiste being utterly awesome in every way -- had to make us happy.
