24: Finale Far from Finished

Jack&Renee.jpgDAY 7 - 6:00AM - 8:00AM

Well, the day is over, but there is so much just beginning, so many questions unanswered that we can't help but feel we've been little Empire Strikes Back'd! As we got into hours 23 and 24, we were looking for some resolution to all that has happened.  Who are "the crew", will Tony tell all, and most importantly -- will Jack live? But nothing. To that we say, "touché, 24 writers," we're already setting the DVR for next season.

Let's take a look at some of the things we do know from the last two hours:

Tony is really evil and his anger stems back to the death of his wife Michelle and the couple's unborn son. We learn Almeida has been working both sides as he tracked down the person who was ultimately responsible for Michelle's death, a man named Alan Wilson. During his search he found that Wilson was responsible for so much more, including the hit on President David Palmer. Tony said he planned on turning Wilson in when he was working with Bill and Chloe, but that Jack's arrival on the scene messed everything up. Tony's crossover to crazy became official when he decided to "harvest" Jack's organs in an attempt to recover the pathogen -- nice touch. However, we're officially mad at him for killing his hot partner Kara.
Where Tony is now: in custody.

First Daughter Olivia Taylor is in big trouble. Secret Service Agent Aaron Pierce alerted former Chief-of-Staff Ethan Kanin that Olivia may not be on the up-and-up. Kanin was able to get a recording of her conversation where she set up the hit on Hodges. He turned it over to President Taylor, giving her the opportunity to cover the whole thing up. Taylor thought about it, but we knew she would do the right thing. Of all the losses on Day 7, President Taylor endured some of the worst, effectively losing her family.
Where Oliva is now: In custody for the murder of Jonas Hodges.

Kim Bauer is hot. Seriously, her arm caught fire as she bravely fought an operative who lay injured in a burning car trying to stop her from taking his laptop, a laptop that would lead Renee and the F.B.I. to the building where Tony, Jack, Kara and Alan Wilson were all meeting. It was good to see Kim actually helping instead of being the time-suck she's been for most of Day 7. Kim was smart and quick on her feet, even tapping some of her C.T.U. experience to help find her dad.
Where Kim is now: In the hospital beginning the stem cell procedure that could possibly save her father.

Agent Renee Walker has Larry Moss on the brain and appears to be ready to exact some revenge for his death. Walker had a one-on-one with Jack in what we can only figure was her way to get approval for what she wanted to do to Wilson. Jack was light on the advice but told her to "try to make choices that you can live with."
Where Walker is now: She has cuffed Janis and has entered the holding room where Alan Wilson is held.

Speaking of Janis; the Chloe/Janis smackdown never really materialized beyond a couple of rips, an insult or two and a staring contest. In fact, the pair seemed to work together seamlessly as they tracked Jack, Tony and friends. It all wrapped with Chloe actually giving Janis a, gulp...compliment.
Where they are now: Chloe is apparently staying in town while Janis is cuffed in an interrogation room where Walker is about to get some face-time with Alan Wilson.

And now to the things we don't know:

  • Who exactly are Alan Wilson and the rest of what we now know are private military firms collaborating to undermine the government? What is their motive and where are they with plans to carry out more attacks?
  • How far will Renee go to get Wilson to talk and will she let her anger send her into a Jack Bauer-like rage? Walker took pride in upholding the law...how far will she go before breaking it?
  • Who is Martin Collier? And does he have a further connection to the day's events? Martin looks to be one of the more connected people in Washington, able to dig up dirt on political opponents and book a hit man with one phone call.
  • What's next for Tony? The guy is as good at escaping as he is at getting caught. Will he get another chance at revenge against Alan Wilson?
  • Will President Taylor and First Man Henry be able to put aside the death of their son and the incarceration of their daughter and rebuild their relationship?
  • And most of all -- will Jack live? The medical teams are ramping up as they prepare for an experimental stem cell procedure that could save the life of our favorite super-agent, but are they in time? Our hunch, yes, because as far as deadly pathogens go, this one moves slow and Jack was even able to thwart a terror threat while dealing with the effects. Too bad they can't get their money back from General Juma!

Some notable quotes from Hours 23 & 24:

Alan Wilson & Kara after he agrees to meet to discuss a larger role for Tony
Wilson:
But Kara, I'll look Almeida in the eye, and if for any reason I don't like what I see, you understand, I can't let him walk out of that meeting alive.
Kara: I understand.

Tony as he tells Kara his plan to use Jack to get the pathogen
We have Jack. The pathogen's in his blood, it's in his organs. We'll be able to harvest everything we need from his body.  Why do you think I had you put those operatives on Kim Bauer?

Ethan to Olivia after she order him held (imagine a couple of 10 year old arguing)
Ethan:
I don't think you understand the seriousness of what you're doing.
Olivia: I don't think you do.

Olivia to Martin about Ethan as she freaks out about the Justice Dept. investigation
You're forgetting, I ended this man's career, Martin. He won't let me off the hook, ever.

First Man to President Taylor after she turns in their daughter
Henry:
Allison, spare me your sanctimony. You're Olivia's mother.
President: I'm also the president of the United States.
Henry: And our family's already paid a steep enough price for that.

So cheers to another exciting and one of the best seasons yet for Jack, Tony, Chloe and the rest of the 24 gang, at least we won't have to wait three years to find out what's next.

I liked this seasons episode, however I have concerns on how they came about with the pathogen that affects Jack. My mother actually died in 2001 of CJD human form of mad cow disease. The symptoms she experienced befor death were very different from what they show Jack experiencing. There are some tremors but in the very early stages. The patient goes from full mobility to a wheel chair in a few days to a weeks time. And cannot communicate due to the deteriation of the brain in the speech area let alone able to walk and see to shoot a gun. The vision of the patient in the very early stages is like looking through celophane as my mom described it way befor diagnosis of the disease. I understand that this is a pathogen aquired disease for our hero but even at that it would mean to be so concentrated that it would consume Jack in just a few hours as it was only 3 weeks from diagnosis to the day that my mother died from the disease. Just interesting to me that the writers would not investigate the disease they choose to inflict on Jack or use as terrorist attack and take into consideration the devastating effects this truely has on someone who has seen it first hand. Please consider the authenticity of things when it comes to writing this kind of screen play for T.V. viewers.
