SYTYCD Recap: Paris is Burning

The first couple was eliminated on last night's episode of So You Think You Can Dance and truth be told, it was no shocker. The failed attempt at a hip-hop routine and an almost worse solo for one of the dismissed sent Paris Torres and Tony Bellissimo packing. If it hadn't been them, I probably would have given up on the show entirely. First thing's first though - Cat Deeley looked amazing last night. Her dress was simple and hot. Homegirl has got legs and she knows how to use them.

The intro was a Shane Sparks hip hop number which probably would have been awesome if I were able to see some of the dancing. We need to file a formal complaint about the over-usage of strobe lights and weird camera angles. It's impossible for those of us at home to see the contestants shake what their mommas gave them if they're constantly trying to turn the show into an art house film most likely starring Crispin Glover.

Let the eliminations begin!

The judges brought three couples out who were nowhere near being in danger of elimination: Phillip and Jeanine, Evan and Randi, and Max and Kayla.

The next couples to be brought out were Caitlin and Jason, Ade and Melissa, Kapono and Ashley, and Paris and Tony. One of these things is not like the other... everyone but Paris and Tony are safe. Something that should have been eliminated though was the clip of Melissa belching in Ade's face. Gross.

The third group to face their fate was Asuka and Vitolio, Brandon and Janette, and Jonathan and Karla. Brandon and Janette were the only ones safe from elimination out of that group -- leaving Jonathan and his nipples to dance for their life. Sadly, Brandon's pants couldn't be eliminated as well.

As the dancers get ready to perform their solos, Mariam Larici and Leonardo Barrinuevo perform an Argentinian Tango that looked like something straight out of a telenovela. I'm fairly certain their performance is lost on the audience of young girls but I could be wrong.

Solo Time!

Paris
goes first and fails to really thrill.  Her routine didn't look like she was dancing for her life. It was pretty bland.
Tony is next and basically made it seem like he gave up. His performance wouldn't have even worked on the Soul Train line. ReRun from What's Happening would've beat him in a dance-off.

Asuka's solo was the livliest of the group. I couldn't even keep up with her legs, they were moving so quickly. Dare I say it, she even looked kind of sexy in a Moulin Rouge kind of way.
Vitolio seemed to be dancing for his life, but more out of fear than out of love. I'm really hoping he can get his head into the game because he's one of my favorites.

Kayla surprised me with a weak solo performance. Maybe it was nerves or having her confidence taken down a few notches, but she just didn't deliver.
Jonathan can do great things as an acrobat but when it comes to technical dancing skill he's not good enough for me to forgive his shirt from the previous night.

As the judges deliberate, Sean Kingston came out looking like a young Biz Markie to promote his new single, "Fire Burning". I couldn't concentrate on the song due to the outfits that were worn by the backup dancers.  One of the dancers ended up giving the audience more of a show than they bargained for due to a strategically placed inconvenient tear in her stretch pants. This is a prime example of why is 90's fashion should not make a comeback.

When all is said and done, Cat Deeley had to say farewell to Tony and Paris.

What did you think of last night's elimination? Were you surprised by the bottom three? Do you think it's fair that couples are up for elimination as opposed to individuals? Let us know in the comments and make sure you visit us again next week for So You Think You Can Dance!
