House Premiere - Oh House, we love you too!!!
We would usually be grumpy about this kind of completely contained episode, but come on! Who could really be mad about two House premieres in one season? Not us. Frankly, we're just swooning over the idea and can't wait to see the crowd back in the differential diagnosis department next week. Cuddy - what have you been doing all this time while House was in therapy? Chase - did you finally get a hair cut? We want to know!
But let's focus on this week. Our favorites after the jump - but first, you tell us. Who did you like best on the sixth floor of the mental ward this week? Vote in our poll - and use the comments section to explain why.
Okay, we lied. We liked all the crazies equally. And here's why - these guys are great actors given great material to work with. I mean, who doesn't want to play the manic depressive white rapper? Or the psychiatrist who matches wits with Dr. House? This was rich stuff. Deep characters who are deeply screwed up.
We don't know why it took House so long to fall in love with them. Though we'll reluctantly admit it might have something to do with the awesome detoxing montage during the series opener. Poor House. We heart you, and we're glad you learned to love the rest of the ward. They are a wacky crew. And yet, in some ways they are just the background scenery to House's transformation from callous knucklehead to emotionally vulnerable human being.
He starts out playing their psychoses like he plays the piano, then grew to see them as human beings who deserve care and respect. We wish more people would form that opinion in the real world with people who have a mental illness. One of our favorite moments was when the "poker" player got up and walked away in the middle of the game and House said "That's probably a fold." Loved how he was taking people as they are.
And you know what? More importantly for the series as a whole, we actually believe in the transformation. We're looking forward to seeing how he tries to maintain his new habits out in the wild, away from the zoo. Can he do it? Can he avoid dropping back into the old, unhappy House? Or will we get to see a new, happy-smiley-face House? You tell us. What do you think?
