SYTYCD - Top 20 At Last!
It's been exhausting -- emotionally, physically, regionally -- but So You Think You Can Dance has finally whittled the dancing horde down to just 20 of the best in the nation. And seriously? They're FANTASTIC. This is going to be an amazing season. Three tap dancers made it through (no tap dancer has made it to the top 20 ever before) plus a krumper (our favorite!) a b-boy (we have our doubts, but the judges saw more of his performances than we did) and an adorable hip-hop specialist. We can't wait to see how these guys grow through the insanely tough challenges ahead of them.
The women have less variety when it comes to dance genre, but more variety when it comes to skin color. We're thrilled to see the diversity of experience, personality and ethnicity. They were all very happy for each other as they came through the curtain tonight and announced they made it. We hope they can live together in the same spirit. There were lots of tears again this week. Tears while they waited nervously to hear how they did. Tears if they got cut. Tears if they didn't. Tears if their friends got cut. We just wanted to give them all a big hug. More after the jump.

The first to find out he made it to the top 20 was Nathan Trasoras. He had the unusual experience of getting his ticket to Vegas during season 5 auditions but was too young to participate that year. At the time, the judges warned him not to slack off on his training, and apparently he didn't. He did great work during the grueling process of elimination in Vegas this year and is going on to the show proper to prove his mettle. We can't wait to get to know him better. We'll try to resist the urge to squeeze his cheeks and talk baby-talk in spite of how young and adorable he is.
The guy who got the biggest cheers from us, though, was Russell Ferguson. He's the krumper who's had zero formal training. But this guy shines. His personality reaches through the camera and grabs us every week - and his technique is amazing. Not just amazing for someone with no training, amazing full stop. We were literally hands in the air cheering when he didn't get cut. It's true, we're hardcore Russell fans. Swoon!
We are so looking forward to how all these guys handle the tough challenges ahead. Seriously -- two tap dancing guys? Crazy! But let's take a quick look at the women.
But that does mean we get to watch the adorable husband/wife ballroom dancers Ashleigh and Ryan Di Lello. Ashleigh had possibly the most stressful time on stage today. First the judges dropped the news that her husband made it through to the Top 20. Then they told the other woman she made it first. Oof.
The bubbly Molly and her bff Noelle both made it on the show too, so there will be plenty of relationship drama to go around. Dancers and "studio culture" can be dreadfully mean-spirited. Right now we're hoping everyone will live together in peace and love, but..... yeah.
At the very least, we expect we won't be disappointed by the dancing. These guys rawk.
Best Lines:
Judges: "Please continue on your shining journey."
Us: "Awww."
Judges: "Russell, you made it. Go and call your mama."
Us: "YESSSS!"
Judges: (The usual psych-out tricks of making her think she's getting cut, then telling her she made it to the Top 20.)
Bianca: "Why'd you do me like that?"

Pauline didn't turn it down, PAULA did.

Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! That was totally our bad. You're completely right, it was PAULA who turned down the spot on the top 20 and not PAULINE. We were having a terrible time keeping all their names straight on the night. Thanks for letting us know we flubbed this one - we'll work hard not to let it happen again.
