SYTYCD - Say It Isn't So

SYTYCD_Ashleigh_Jacob_VienneseWaltz_0014.jpg
This week as we watched So You Think You Can Dance, we were pretty grumbly about everything from costumes to baseball to who had to dance for their lives. But only because we have such high expectations and affection for the whole shebang. (How can you not love a show that produces scenes like the above -- thanks, Jakob and Ashleigh!)

This time the judges once again chose who went home, thanks to the World Series -- apparently this national pastime thing takes up so much primetime they can't fit in a results show again this week. Whatever. It's not so bad when the judges completely agree with us, but when we have irreconcilable differences with them -- like tonight -- we're left shaking our fists at the sky and plaintively asking "Why??? Why couldn't this have been left to a phone vote!?!"

Tell us in the poll (and comments!) if we were all alone in these sentiments tonight. More after the poll and the jump.

Yeah, we were not happy -- NOT HAPPY AT ALL -- when two of the three tap dancers went home this week. Sure, it's possible we've been watching too many old movies with adorable children in tap shoes.  It's also possible we'll never really "get" the entire contemporary genre. But we so, so loved Phillip and Bianca (Okay, it's true, not quite as much as we loved -- and still love -- Russell. But there's enough love to go around.) We were truly sad to see them go.

SYTYCD_Channing-Phillip_Samba_0009.jpgWhen Phillip performed with Channing, it's true some of the lifts looked kind of worrying and painful, but here on our couch we were in 100% agreement that Phillip had way more star power than his partner. In fact, until we heard the judges' commentary, we were worried about Channing making it to next week! Were the judges dazzled by her fancy footwork and glitter? Forget the mythical 10 pounds -- does the camera add more sexiness to Phillip's grin than was visible to the judges live? Pardon us. We're just going to sit here shaking our heads in disbelief a little longer.

Meanwhile, we're just going to ask you to take a look at the next photo to see why Russell and Noelle were asked to step forward.

SYTYCD_Noelle-Russell_HipHop_0005.jpgYeah. That there is hip-hop. We're just glad the judges didn't have the audacity to ask Russell to dance for his life again. We would have started writing hate mail to them. Seriously.  And as it turned out, Noelle lives to dance again (on her slightly wounded knee) or at least for another week. Her conteporary solo at the end was emotionally moving and technically proficient. You'd better be a good partner for our man Russell, you hear?

The other woman up on the chopping block was Bianca, and we're just not sure how fair it is to ask a TAP DANCER to compete in a Broadway dance number in a ratty old dress and BARE FEET. Ahem. We didn't really think she did all that badly -- and frankly if it were up to us, Channing would have been the one dancing for her life. But we suppose that's the advantage of sparkles.

The other man who had to dance for his life was her partner Victor. For his solo, he performed a very modern/contemporary piece in a black unitard that we found quite distracting. The judges were on his side. We'll just say we preferred Phillip's tap number. Oh well.

SYTYCD_Ellenore-Ryan_ArgentineTango_0023.jpg
Honorable mention definitely goes to Ellenore and Ryan, who did a stunning Argentinian Tango. Just look at the passion in those two faces. The earnestness. The connection. Now look lower -- in this photo you can just make out the fact that the hem of Ellenore's sparkly (and thank goodness, stretchy!) dress has been accidentally impaled on the heel of her shoe mid-dance. Adam Shankman said he was worried the whole dress was going to fall off, but the two dancers more than soldiered through -- they were stunning to behold. Truly gorgeous. (And have we mentioned that while our inner 17 year-olds love and adore Russell, we're falling more and more in love with Ryan all the time? Shhh. Don't tell.)

And now, we leave you with just one more photo which is so full of awesome, we think it stands on its own -- Nathan and Mollee doing Bollywood. Squeeee!
