We're down to just seven couples on So You Think You Can Dance, and things are getting tough. We loved so many of them, we can't really guess who will be at the bottom. Sure, the judges expressed their opinions, but we thought they were crazy. More on that later. We're going to give you photos once again, in order of what we thought were best to not-so-best. It's so tough this week, though. We thought everyone was great.
But greatest was Ryan and Ellenore with their contemporary routine. They didn't do so great last week, so there was probably some extra incentive there, but they even made us like contemporary. We who haven't been big fans of that genre up till now were glued to the screen, drinking it all in. Fabulous!
More photos after the jump.
We had a hard time deciding who to put in the number two slot, but we finally decided on the paso doble by Kathryn and Legacy. It wasn't the greatest paso doble in the world, but it was pretty good, and they definitely both put their all into it. The movie Strictly Ballroom has given us impossibly high standards on that dance form -- if you haven't seen that movie yet you MUST. Go netflix it now. We'll wait. Oh, heck, we'll just show you the Paso Doble here:
See what we mean? Okay. Legacy threw himself into this, body and soul. His technique wasn't sharp enough, but he got a lot of the important parts right, and this is a tough one to master. It's the attitude that matters, and they both had that in spades.
Channing and Victor come in at our #3 slot with their Jazz routine. Jazz is another genre we have a hard time wrapping our minds around, so it's possible we just didn't love this as much as we should have. Weird costumes always give us pause, but by the end of the performance they had almost won us over. Almost.
Our personal bias (love, adoration, etc.) for Russell may be skewing us a little here, but we thought he was a joy to watch doing the foxtrot this time. He's done it once before -- with his choreographer because Noelle was on the injured list -- but the judges noted there was marked improvement. The chemistry was definitely better. They looked like two good friends having a great time, rather than the mother/son chemistry of Russell's first foxtrot. So yeah, don't mind us while we stare at his photo a little longer. We're still high school girls in our hearts.
Ashleigh and Jakob drew hip hop this week. The judges raved. We didn't. It's possible that the camera is just not conveying how great it was, but the performance we saw was .... well, uninspiring. They both did better than we thought they would -- a contemporary dancer and a ballroom dancer attempting they hip hop style is definitely daunting. But comparing them to other hip hop performances we've already seen.... well, it just drew a shrug from us. We just didn't see what the judges did. We thought it was fine. It didn't speak to us.
So yeah. This photo of Mollee and Nathan really says it all. Sure, they were dancing to the latest release from Lady Ga Ga, and that allows a certain amount of silliness, but we just weren't as charmed by it as the judges were. We spent a lot of the routine with eyebrows cocked going... wha? Okay.... However, it's up to the public to vote now, and Nathan has a huge fan base (our inner high school girls think he's pretty dreamy) so we expect to see these two safe.
Oh Karen and Kevin, we heart you. You're truly one of our favorite couples. We thought you were so adorable this week we wanted to just wrap you up and put you in our pockets. But the Broadway routines have been hard on couples this season. The judges just weren't impressed. And it's true, you can see in this photo, both of you had your shoulders up by your ears in an uncomfortable way. So we did have to put you last in our list, but we really, really don't think either of you should be going home. The judges weren't amazed, and you've had a hard time drawing the home votes so far this season, so all we can say is.... we desperately hope you can do some amazing solos because we don't want to lose either one of you!
