Human Target: Holy Chance

106_sanctuary_0194.jpgChance got religion this week on Human Target -- well, sort of. He was saving his client -- and a bunch of harmless monks -- from a marauding band of thieves who have either been reading too much Dan Brown or who just watched an ecclesiastical version of National Treasure. And while the story itself wasn't our idea of a good time (because we're still having Da Vinci Code flashbacks), we have to appreciate the sight of Chance in a monk's robes (thankfully without tonsure) swinging a censer and kicking all kinds of bad-guy ass.

Plus, the setting -- a remote monastery on top of a mountain accessible only by cable car -- was truly gorgeous. It's enough to almost make us think of taking up vows. (Almost.) OK, we're moderately confused why a Canadian monastery on top of an inaccessible mountain would have prohibition-era tunnels beneath it... and how people got up there before the cable car... and why John Gray, the client,  was allowed to run a service based on The Flash... and how both Gray and Chance managed to waltz in posing as monks... and... you know what? Let's suspend that disbelief off the cable-car rig and just go with it.

We learned a bit more Chance/Winston backstory this week, in the form of Winston voiceovers, a throwaway observation about how Winston holds a gun, and a moment when Chance got up to address the monks -- from the pulpit. Winston talks his way through a case into a mini recorder after successful conclusion, and he uses the opportunity to not just lay out the facts of what happened, but to speculate on Chance's history, psychology and possibly his immortal soul. We're... not fans. Sorry, Winston.

We were much bigger fans of Winston's ass-kicking prowess this week. Goaded by Guerrero (more on that later), Winston found himself taking out an armed thug and confronting another bad guy. "You hold your gun like a cop," the bad guy sneers. "From what I understand, cops don't go around shooting people." Ah, but Winston does. Explanations? "I'm retired." Hee! Then there was the moment he was confronted by an armed detonator. Chance was confident that Winston could handle it -- after all, he's done it before! One problem -- that was all Guerrero. Who apparently learned how to disarm bombs by flipping a coin and taking his chances. Winston is not amused -- but he is still alive, after he randomly picked the right wire.

And oh yeah, about Guerrero ... He spent the time Winston and Chance were away on another job -- one that involved breaking into Chance's office. Nooooo! Stay good, Guerrero! In fact, he was looking for Case File Number 0001, helpfully narrated by Winston, which concerns Katherine Walters, the first client of the Chance/Winston partnership. Apparently, this was the case -- and the woman -- who sent Chance on the path to redemption. She died. Winston thinks Chance has never gotten over it. Guerrero's client thinks Chance should pay for his sins.

And Guerrero? Well, we can't quite tell what he's doing. He did indeed steal the contents of that file, and he did deliver it to the client. But when the client refused to tell Guerrero who the big boss was, Guerrero shot him. Was that because he was using the file as a pretext to find out who was after Chance? Or did he just get pissed off at the client treating him like a servant? Is he a good guy with questionable methods, or is he a bad guy who's fooling our hero?

What was your take on the ep? Talk about it in the comments?

Things we learned:
  • Chance knows his way around the bible -- or at least can quote Psalms from memory
  • Chance was in love with Katherine Walters, and Winston thinks that everything he's done since has been to atone for her death.
  • Winston is an ex-cop. Is that why he hates Guerrero so much?
  • Abbots can tell bad guys to go to hell -- and you would think they'd be able to make it happen.
  • Guerrero successfully defused bombs in Miami and Detroit. Was he always flipping coins?
  • Chance now has a papal ring that may unlock countless secrets. Please, no...
