The Ballad of Finn, Quinn, Kurt, Rachel, Shue and Glee

will-rachel-endless-love.jpgWell, it was certainly a night of revelations on Glee, wasn't it folks? Both Quinn and Finn's families found out about their unborn bundle of joy (largely due to Finn's stupidity, but what's done is done) and Puck let slip to Mercedes that he's the baby-daddy. And as always, music comes to the rescue.

Hapless Schue was the victim of yet another obsessive doe-eyed crush with creepy and hilarious results. Rachel has always been a bit of an emotional wild-card, but we didn't expect her to go so far over the edge. She's also way too smart to get conned by Terri into scrubbing the Schuesters' tub. However, the whole situation was a great vehicle for "Endless Love." We haven't seen a rendition that hysterical since the lip-syncing Zamboni driver in Happy Gilmore.

In any case, Susie Pepper was right; Rachel does need to get her self-esteem back up. There's nothing worse than a teen dramedy that masks a girl's obvious gorgeous assets with a catch-all mask of nerdy interests. You can sing and Finn thinks you have a great ass, Rachel. Now go out there and work it.

Finally Finn got another feature worthy of his talents; it's been too long since the Avril Lavigne number. Both the Pretenders and Paul Anka ballads were tremendously entertaining and the latter had an added boost of awkwardness and hilarity. Despite Finn's confession a la song being a completely bonehead move, Quinn actually seemed grateful for him, albeit for a millisecond. It was a little surprising that she didn't take the honesty cue and tell him that he wasn't the father, but if we had a white knight like that, we'd probably hang on to him like hell too.

Glee: Wheels Within Wheels

109artieGlee-ep108_Sc33-60_0098.jpgDid anyone think that the title of this episode of Glee was a little overstated? It was great to delve into Artie's character a bit more -- which has been more or less unknown to us until now -- but it wasn't quite enough. We probably saw more of Finn in a wheelchair than we did Artie.

However, what we did see was fantastic. Artie's quiet candor was perfect for delivering his quips, and his unplugged Billy Idol solo was incredible. However, we're a little disappointed with his reaction to Tina's confession. He's absolutely right that she shouldn't fake a handicap when he'll never be rid of his, but she opened up to him about her hesitancy to get close to people and was immediately shut down. Argument aside, we think those crazy kids are too cute together to stay apart for very long.

Once again, it seems that Kurt has stolen the show. He gave another heartfelt and hilarious performance -- we loved how he kept his legs crossed in the wheelchair at all times. It's easy to see why Ryan Murphy wrote Chris Colfer into the script and he had the foresight to weave in a contrasting but caring father figure with Mike O'Malley. O'Malley and Colfer clicked so well together and it's great to see that Kurt's confiding in his father is turning out to be a rewarding bonding experience for both of them.

Puck was another repeat hit. He was charming and funny without losing his jackass veneer. Lying about paralysis-by-shark-attack to score weed and lacing the bake sale cupcakes with it was right in step with his increasingly interesting character. He also got the only genuine smile out of the hormonal, bitchy Quinn in the episode. The magnetism between those two is the most believable out of all the flirtationships, including Schue and Emma.

Finally, there was Sue. If there was one theme of this episode, it's that everyone has their own complications and contradictions, especially when it comes to relationships. When Sue started being nice to Schue in "Mash-Up," we were a little worried that this would drain her of the venom we have come to love and crave. However, a softening of her character, or maybe just further insight, was needed. If we're going to explore the anomalies of the other characters, why should the villain be left out? Even Lex Luthor had a soft spot at one time.

Glee: Slushie Wars, Zoot Suits and Mash-ups

10820090505_scene29_IMG-1126.jpgSo this Glee was fraught with anger, wasn't it? From the very beginning (the walk-by slushy ambush) to Ken wigging out on the football team to Finn tackling fellow teammates, the cast was getting out some very intense emotion.

Speaking of getting out emotion, Puck singing Sweet Caroline was... interesting. Naturally Puck's instrument of choice is a guitar, but his Mohawk and Neil Diamond don't exactly mesh. Have you seen Neil's feathered, flowing locks? Baby steps, Puck. Baby steps.

Weird mash-up aside, Puck's voice was great and his scenes with Rachel and his family were classic, especially his sister screaming at Schindler's List. Clearly Puck just wanted to get into Rachel's pants (apparently god wants that, too), but telling her that they were never really friends when she gives him the shake off was a little harsh. But then again, that was far less of a curve ball than the guitar ballad/sing-along.

Finn's moment of weakness was also a bit of a blow -- if he can be strong for Quinn and already got the ball rolling with Glee from the first episode, why was it so hard to do it again? This is just a reminder of how much it can suck to be a high school kid. Have fun with that angst, kid. It's a blast.

Glee: Throwdown at the Glee Club Corral

107Glee_Sc49_1224_f.jpgWell, it didn't quite start out that way, but yesterday's episode of Glee was kind of a Quinn episode. Frankly, we think it was great. Her character is so much fun to watch (calling Rachel Treasure Trail and Stubbles -- what heinous thing is she going to say next??), Dianna Agron is a fantastic actress, and we got to see some precious Finn/Quinn time.

In another throwback to Motown, Quinn expressed herself through the words of the musical goddess Diana Ross. Agron's pretty voice isn't that strong, but it kind of works with the smooth, sultry genre. Plus, it's always good to see modern entertainment embracing the classic oldies.

Prize for best quotes of the episode is a toss-up between Sue (naturally) and Jacob Ben Israel, Rachel's ginger stalker. Even though it was completely predictable that Sue would relish her appearance during the slow-motion dueling with Schue in the opening scene, she still pulled it off, "Even in the heat of battle I am so elegant, regal!"

It was fantastic to see the club form a covert jam-session, especially with Puck on the guitar - does he keep getting more attractive or are we huffing too much Tribune-issue glue? Anyway, the kids were having such a good time jamming out to Nelly that you almost forgot they were in the midst of a racially-charged battle royale.

Speaking of which...

Glee: Don't Forget Your Vitamin D!

10620090429_scenea34_IMG-8642.jpgWe suppose it's a natural plot progression that drug abuse would follow Kristin Chenoweth's alcoholic shenanigans on Glee. Whatever the reason, we were loving the absolutely hilarious fast-talking, hyperactive head-nodding and amazing mash-up performances. Among our favorite bits:

Boys vs. Girls
Once again, the kids of Glee put on incredible performances. While the harmony by the girls in their "Halo/Walking on Sunshine" mash-up was flawless, We have to say the boys put on a better show. The jerky, wired drug effects actually lent themselves to rock n' roll foot stomping, and Puck's mohawk almost looked appropriate for once. It's hard to ignore the boy-band vibe they were giving off, but the killer dance steps, leather jackets and amazing vocals make up for it.

That said, Rachel's pre-performance speech was like a combination of her normal self-righteousness and Elmo on speed, and therefore hilarious. Plus, all of the girls were sincerely having a great time with their number.

Sue Sylvester
Ol' Sue had some classic lines in this episode, particularly when she tells "Ellen" that her blouse is "just insane." The journal scene was a perfect vehicle for her scathing inner monologue - hopefully there will be more entries we'll peek in on in the future.

Glee: This One Is a Kicker

104jocksGlee_Sc28_2005.jpg
We don't even know where to begin. This episode of Glee was so full of awesome -- plus a kick in the teeth or two, but still. I guess you gotta take the good with the bad in William McKinley High.

So first with the awesome. Youtube may be full of it, but you've never seen Beyonce done this way. Yes, the football team busts a move to "Put a Ring on It" out on the field in front of everyone and wins a game. How can this be? Well, we'll tell you. It's all thanks to Kurt, who did some quick fibbing to his dad saying he was the kicker on the team. More after the jump.

tweetpeats.jpgWe here at the Fox Source secret headquarters have decided that "tweet-peats" are officially the best use of Twitter yet, hands down. How would you like running commentary during a favorite show? Eve Joins Glee, Plus Our Guest-Star Wish List

eve.gifThings just keep getting better and better for our Glee club. EW's Michael Ausiello reveals that R&B star Eve will be featured in two episodes of Glee next season as a rival school's choral director. We can't wait to see her throw down with the folks at McKinley High.

What tickled our fancy even more was the news that Eve stepped into the part after Whitney Houston turned it down. Whitney, what were you thinking?

But it did start us thinking -- about who else we'd love to see on the show. Our wish list includes:

  • Jasika Nicole. We love her as seinsible, unflappable (and underused!) Astrid on Fringe, but we also happen to know she's a proud show choir veteran with unbeatable jazz hands. We can just picture Jasika as a glee club diva who brings down the house.
  • Along those same lines, we'd love to see Lance Reddick show off his smooth jazz pipes.
  • Steve Perry. Come on, you can't keep using Journey songs without bringing the band's golden voice to TV!
  • Wilford Brimley -- to show off his rapping skills
  • Mandy Moore (the actress/singer, not the So You Think You Can Dance judge... although that also has possibilities...) -- We're torn on whether we'd prefer her to riff on her role in Saved or go in an entirely new direction.
  • Seth McFarlane -- The Family Guy mastermind already has a twisted sense of humor and a seemingly encyclopedic memory of every musical ever made.
  • Any of the High School Musical kids -- but only if we could see them get beat up by the evil jocks.
  • Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean -- Not only are they Jane Lynch's pals, but they're musical geniuses! Can you imagine the Glee kids covering a Spinal Tap masterpiece like Big Bottom or Stonehenge
What do you think of our picks, and who would you add to the list? Talk about it in the comments!

Find Out When Your Favorite Shows Are Starting on FOX

Counting down the days until your favorite shows come back to FOX? Well, now we've got a date to count down to! The network released its Fall premiere dates, and we're busy marking out calendars. Here's the scoop:

Can't get enough of So You Think You Can Dance? Well, when this season is done, you won't have long to wait for the next one! Season 6 of SYTYCD premieres Weds., Sept. 16. That's followed by the fall premiere of Glee -- get your pitch pipes ready!

September 17 sees the return of Bones and Fringe. We're thrilled to see these two shows paired up (sexy FBI agents and fascinating scientists for everyone!), but we admit to being a little queasy at the thought of so many decayed corpses/buckets of maggots/bizarre creatures/freaks of science in one concentrated block.

We're slightly less convinced abouth the next gathering of shows. The new comedy Brothers begins on Friday, Sept. 18. It's paired with the season premiere of 'Til Death. Two sitcoms together? So far, so good. But those shows are followed by Dollhouse, which... well, one of these things is not like the other. We hope Dollhouse survived the cognative whiplash that comes from that particular part of the lineup.

House gets its two-hour season premiere on Monday, Sept. 21. The next week, Lie to Me settles into its post-House berth. Two misanthropic men of science on one night! Be still our hearts.

Animation Domination returns on Sunday, Sept. 27 with all new eps of The Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad. Plus The Cleveland Show gets it's series premiere. We can't wait!

Rounding out the new shows, The Wanda Sykes Show is scheduled to premiere on Saturday, Nov. 7.  We're really looking forward to seeing what Wanda does to the late night landscape.

So that's the sched. Thoughts? What are you most looking forward to? Talk about it in the comments!

Joy! Rapture! Glee Cast Spills on the Preview Episode

We're so excited for the special post-Idol showing of Glee tonight -- we saw the cast perform Queen's" Somebody to Love" at the FOX Upfronts yesterday, and the whole crowd erupted in cheers. This is one of those shows where all the hype is worth it!

We were lucky enough to catch up with the cast on the red carpet before a special preview of the episode, and they were alll adorable! We got to talk with Jayma Mays (sweet, overlooked teacher Emma Pillsbury), Cory Monteith (jock Finn Hudson, who decides he can both play football and perform in the glee club), Lea Michelle (geeky singer Rachel Berry), Mark Salling (jock and glee-club tormentor Puck), Dianna Agron (mean-girl cheerleader Quinn), Kevin McHale (glee-club member Kurt), Chris Colfer (glee club member Arty), Amber Reilly (glee club diva Mercedes) and Jenna Ushkowitz (glee club rebel Tina) about their characters, the show, and what we can expect from Glee. Check it out!

What do you think? Are you as excited as we are? Will you be tuning in? Talk about it in the comments!
