Human Target: It's What's Inside That Counts

Crooked cops, honorable criminals, conflicted kids... all in a days work for Christopher Chance on Human Target. Plus we saw a near-fatal case of road rash, learned my Guerrero should not be the one to jump-start your car, and felt Winston's pain at his business partner/s unbusinesslike impulses.

The client this week was Allyson, a DA who has a meeting with a major crime boss who wants to turn over his secrets. As those secrets include everyone in every branch of city government who has ever been on his payroll -- and he's apparently employed a goodly portion of the population -- there are plenty of folks who don't want that info coming to light. That includes one Inspector Wes Gibson, who's a decorated cop and the head of Whitey Doyle's hit squad. Oops.

Turns out Allyson has her own secret to keep -- she's Doyle's secret daughter. Doyle abandoned her and her mom when she was 2 years old, and she's had nothing to do with him since. Now Doyle wants to reconnect -- but first they'll both have to survive. Obstacles to survival: Allyson was fed (no, really -- as in she swallowed) a micro tracking device, so the bad guys know exactly where she is at all times. Hiding isn't an option, cutting the tracker out isn't an option, so the guys have to get creative. Fortunately, Guerrero uses he mad menace-to-society skillz and figures out a way to fool the tracker -- which leads the bad guys to Chance, not Allyson. Allyson reunites with her dad, who admits he's turning in evidence so he can bond with his daughter. The bad apples get taken out. And Chance gets his chance to take out Gibson by hanging out in his skeezy hotel room. Chance doesn't like lose ends...

Find out what we loved and what didn't float our boat after the jump...

FOX Fans: Defend the Hottness Honor of Your Favorite Stars!

Have you been itching for a chance to show your devotion to your favorite FOX characters? Now you have not one but two chances to do just that!

The fine folks at KDVR in Denver are hosting a Battle of the FOX Hotties as we speak. Right now, the Women's bracket is up, but you can still vote in the Men's bracket as well. The second phase of the Men's competition launches Friday, and the second round of Women's matches goes up on Tuesday, February 18 -- so get voting!

Then there's an all networks battle to the death over at the South Florida Sun Sentinel, where CW stars are going up against the juggernauts from the other four broadcast networks. The Bad Boys division (which includes Puck and Peter Bishop -- and Puck is currently losing) is already off the front page, but you can still vote. Keep checking this page throughout the next month to support your fave stars!

* We know, we know -- there are those among you who sneer at such things, who protest that we should focus on the content of the shows and the nuances of the acting rather than the exterior facade of the people who bring our favorite characters to life. And we like to think we do that here... but that doesn't stop us from being able to celebrate the aesthetic pleasures these folks bring to bear. Are we shallow? Maybe. But we are having fun!

Human Target: Holy Chance

Chance got religion this week on Human Target -- well, sort of. He was saving his client -- and a bunch of harmless monks -- from a marauding band of thieves who have either been reading too much Dan Brown or who just watched an ecclesiastical version of National Treasure. And while the story itself wasn't our idea of a good time (because we're still having Da Vinci Code flashbacks), we have to appreciate the sight of Chance in a monk's robes (thankfully without tonsure) swinging a censer and kicking all kinds of bad-guy ass.

Plus, the setting -- a remote monastery on top of a mountain accessible only by cable car -- was truly gorgeous. It's enough to almost make us think of taking up vows. (Almost.) OK, we're moderately confused why a Canadian monastery on top of an inaccessible mountain would have prohibition-era tunnels beneath it... and how people got up there before the cable car... and why John Gray, the client, was allowed to run a service based on The Flash... and how both Gray and Chance managed to waltz in posing as monks... and... you know what? Let's suspend that disbelief off the cable-car rig and just go with it.

Human Target: Butt-kicking Tango

Hey! Human Target got So You You Think You Can Dance in our action show! And it worked -- the fight/tango scene between Chance and Emma Brown may be one of our favorite moments so far. Bravo!

Chance's dance partner is an FBI agent who is on the lookout for a spy. Since Chance is there looking for the same spy, that should work out nicely. But first there's some mistaken identity ("You think I'm a prostitute? You think I'm a $40 prostitute?"), some bluffing (Chance has the Secretary of Defense on speed dial?), and a wee bit of near-fatal poisoning.

See, Raven is a spy who's selling secrets to the highest bidder. Raven killed Chance's old friend Danny, then poisoned Danny's journalist brother and (ulp!) Chance himself. So Chance had extra incentive to find the spy. First he had to bluff his way into a party at the Russian Embassy (and Chance cleans up niiiiice), then he had to deal with a suspicious Emma (the always fab Emmanuelle Vaugier), the Russian special forces, and his own impending death. Eep!

We're starting to think all TV show producers are investing in rail travel... except then how do you explain the pilot? Hmm. Maybe they want us all to give up travel and just stay home to watch TV?

What we loved:

We adore the interplay between Chance's cronies. Guerrero digging into Winston's lunch, then snickering like a naughty schoolboy when Chance was breaking the news that Wilson would be a stand-in flight attendant on the mission. And oh, the look on Winston's face when Chance rang the call button! Hee!

Speaking of priceless faces... we're still giggling about Chance's double-take when he grabbed for a weapon in the airplane galley and came up with a spork.

Hey, Winston got to fight! Go, WInston!

The show rocked a couple of assumptions, which was nice. The uberhacker, who everyone referred to as "he", was actually a woman. So was the second kidnapper. Um, yay gender parity?

Guerrero was rocking his deathlike stare again with Sergei. We have to admit, though, that we're hoping to see why everyone is so afraid of him at some point soon. It's not just because they all saw Watchmen and Little Children, is it?

Chance's skillset comes into play again -- and he's willing to read the instruction manual! Surely he is a god among men.

Human Target: Chi McBride on Winston Getting Physical

So we're watching Human Target, and we're thinking: We know why Christopher Chance is there -- he's a man-of-mystery thrill-junkie -- and we know why Guerrero is there -- he's a potential sociopath with what we hope is a heart of gold. But what about Winston? He seems so....sane. How did he get mixed up with these people?

Well, we don't exactly have an answer, but we do have a little more insight. We sat down with the always-delightful Chi McBride on set, and found out how he sees Winston's role in Chance, what he looks for in a business partner, and whether we can see any butt-kicking on his part anytime soon. Check it out!

Human Target Premiere: What Did You Think?

Human Target got its special sneak preview last night before the premiere of 24, and we've gotta say, we loved it! It had just the right balance of action and snark, plus more than a little mystery and a heaping scoop of ass-kicking. How could we not get onboard?

It helps that the show has Mark Valley as its action-man lead, along with Chi McBride as the long-suffering manager Winston and Jackie Earl Haley as the feral info man Guerrero -- who manages to be soft-spoken and terrifying at the same time. Add in geek-bait guest star Tricia Helfer (of BSG fame), a California bullet train, some amazing fight scenes, and plenty of the aforementioned snarky comic-book bravado, and we're hooked.

When Human Target was introduced to the fans at Comic Con, the producers promised a throwback to the 80s action shows we fondly remember from our TV-saturated youth. It delivers, and we couldn't be happier. And we're not alone in our love for the show: TV critics and bloggers are equally impressed .

But that's enough about what we think. What was your take on the show?
