SYTYCD - It's hard to say goodbye

top14performIMG_9409.jpg
Alas, contemporary is just not our thing! It's just not! Sigh. All we could do was stare quizzically at our screen during the entire performance above on So You Think You Can Dance. Sure, they're supposed to be statues in a museum, but then... what? Weird. But the judges and audience seemed to love it, so yay.

And then it was two contemporary dancers vs. a hip hop guy for the male solos. Once again, we just didn't get it. We enjoyed Kevin's performance. It was impressive. (Though none of them were as impressive as in their auditions.) But apparently the two contemporary dancers impressed the judges more. Grrr.

On the other hand, everyone agreed the Bollywood exhibition dancers were fabulous. Photos and discussion after the jump.

SYTYCD - Seven Couples

Ryanellenorecontemp091116_0714.jpgWe're down to just seven couples on So You Think You Can Dance, and things are getting tough. We loved so many of them, we can't really guess who will be at the bottom. Sure, the judges expressed their opinions, but we thought they were crazy. More on that later. We're going to give you photos once again, in order of what we thought were best to not-so-best. It's so tough this week, though. We thought everyone was great.

But greatest was Ryan and Ellenore with their contemporary routine. They didn't do so great last week, so there was probably some extra incentive there, but they even made us like contemporary. We who haven't been big fans of that genre up till now were glued to the screen, drinking it all in. Fabulous!

More photos after the jump.

SYTYCD: The Great And Powerful Public Has Spoken

Sytycd_RoadWarrior_Group_Pic.jpg
Wednesday's So You Think You Can Dance was the first live results show of the season and it had some real surprises.  The opening cast-wide number was fun in a sort of Scorpion King meets Road Warrior way.  What's amazing to us was given how the costumes obscured most of the dancer's identities unless the viewer really concentrated, Russell (yes, he's still our fave) and Ryan really popped on camera.

We were lulled into a sense of security by the Judge's comments Tuesday night, two of whom thought that Nathan and Mollee were the couple who needed to be most worried.  So much pish posh!   Apparently Nathan's adoring fans kept the couple safe. He certainly garnered his share of squealing from the audience.

Find out who was cut after the jump!

SYTYCD: Audience Participation

615_MG_5678.jpg
Tonight we got eight engrossing performances on So You Think You Can Dance, and now it's up to the audience to point the finger at who will be on the chopping block tomorrow. We have to say wow, what a wide range of material! We were blown away a few times, worried a lot more. We were really hoping there would be another stunner like the Bollywood piece from last week, but we're forced to admit that we just weren't all that stunned this week.

So, in honor of audience voting finally opening up, we're going to go right ahead and list the performances we liked most to least in order of our preference -- starting with that one right up there.

Karen and Kevin were a ton of fun to watch -- doing the hustle of all things. We usually like these guys, but tonight they were especially great as they really had the chemistry. We swoon!

Now, vote in our poll, then see our own personal rankings after the jump.

SYTYCD - Say It Isn't So

SYTYCD_Ashleigh_Jacob_VienneseWaltz_0014.jpg
This week as we watched So You Think You Can Dance, we were pretty grumbly about everything from costumes to baseball to who had to dance for their lives. But only because we have such high expectations and affection for the whole shebang. (How can you not love a show that produces scenes like the above -- thanks, Jakob and Ashleigh!)

This time the judges once again chose who went home, thanks to the World Series -- apparently this national pastime thing takes up so much primetime they can't fit in a results show again this week. Whatever. It's not so bad when the judges completely agree with us, but when we have irreconcilable differences with them -- like tonight -- we're left shaking our fists at the sky and plaintively asking "Why??? Why couldn't this have been left to a phone vote!?!"

Tell us in the poll (and comments!) if we were all alone in these sentiments tonight. More after the poll and the jump.

SYTYCD - First Elimination Round

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for sytucd_Brandon_MG-5078abrF.jpg
Oh Brandon. Brandon, Brandon, Brandon. We barely knew you. Seriously, you were put into a pretty impossible position and we were sad to see you cut from So You Think You Can Dance before you really had a chance to show us what you could do. Eliminations from the top 20 started tonight, but it wasn't a matter of voting from the audience -- the judges chose which guy and which girl was sent packing.

At the end, we had no idea which two women would have to dance for their lives, but alas, we were pretty sure you would be on the chopping block. You and Pauline were an absolutely adorable couple. You had some of the best chemistry, and we enjoyed watching your waltz, but in a year where everyone else knocks it out of the ballpark every time... well... sorry. We look forward to seeing you next year, if the rules get bent enough that we can do that.

More after the poll. And the jump.

SYTYCD - Early Elimination!!!!!

contempSYTYCD_091018_0783-1.jpg
Okay, not exactly an elimination, but a significant change in So You Think You Can Dance Season Six Top 20. We really thought Billy Bell was going to be one of the final two, but not this year. Via an official press release, came the announcement that Billy had to drop out due to illness.

A quick tour of the various sources around the Internet (Did you know Billy has a fan page on Facebook? Now you do. Go sign up there as a fan of his to keep in touch.) provides no further details, except that Billy was just released from the hospital on Sunday and his family is asking that fans respect their privacy. Yikes. We're all sending Billy best wishes on a speedy recovery and we hope to see him doing great things in the near future. He's got a ton of talent.

But where does that leave So You Think You Can Dance? Well, the show must go on. And taking Billy's place in the Top 20 is a face you may remember.....

sytucd_Brandon_MG-5094abrF.jpgSay hello to Brandon Dumlao, a hip-hop dancer from Concord, CA. Yep, that makes FOUR men from the ranks of hip-hop this year. Those of us who are huge hip-hop fans are having a hard time containing our enthusiasm, we're sad to say. (We were really sad to see Brandon cut from the top 32 and can't wait to see more of this cutie.)

The change in the line-up didn't happen prior to filming the show-off special that aired last night, so we didn't get to see Brandon strut his stuff there, but he'll be appearing in tonight's broadcast of the first elimination round. We hope to see him stick around a good, long time. Welcome, Brandon!

SYTYCD - Top 20 Show Off Special

61020performSYTYCD_091018_0238.jpg
What a night on So You Think You Can Dance! It was really great to watch a bunch of performances without having to worry about who would be going home. And we loved seeing the variety of styles, the colorful costumes, and the enthusiasm from dancers, judges, and audience alike.

We weren't wild about all of the choreography (sorry choreographers! we know you're all famous and stuff, we're just the uninformed public here) but we didn't see any dancers struggling through uniformly difficult performances. We don't know how they're going to make any decisions this year about who stays and who goes. These folks are fantastic.

More detail (and more photos!) after the jump. But first, pick your early favorite in our poll.

SYTYCD - Top 20 At Last!

SYTYCDGalleryGroup_0030_lyv1F.jpg
It's been exhausting -- emotionally, physically, regionally -- but So You Think You Can Dance has finally whittled the dancing horde down to just 20 of the best in the nation. And seriously? They're FANTASTIC. This is going to be an amazing season. Three tap dancers made it through (no tap dancer has made it to the top 20 ever before) plus a krumper (our favorite!) a b-boy (we have our doubts, but the judges saw more of his performances than we did) and an adorable hip-hop specialist. We can't wait to see how these guys grow through the insanely tough challenges ahead of them.

The women have less variety when it comes to dance genre, but more variety when it comes to skin color. We're thrilled to see the diversity of experience, personality and ethnicity. They were all very happy for each other as they came through the curtain tonight and announced they made it. We hope they can live together in the same spirit. There were lots of tears again this week. Tears while they waited nervously to hear how they did. Tears if they got cut. Tears if they didn't. Tears if their friends got cut. We just wanted to give them all a big hug. More after the jump.

SYTYCD: Tears for Fears

601090613_SYTYCD_0063.jpg
This week emotions were running high on So You Think You Can Dance. The cuts were so brutal -- people we thought would definitely make it to the top 20 were sent away. People who came super-close to making it to the top 20 last year? Gone. And Iveta -- the dance champion who grew up in the Soviet Union, remember her? Gone. Yikes. And there was so much to pack into this episode, we didn't even get to see the performance that sent her home.

They pulled no punches and drove the dancers like there was no tomorrow -- and for so many, there wasn't. It seemed like they were being sent home by the bus-load.

And did we mention the crying? Everyone was crying by the end of this episode. Of course those who were cut were crying -- we're used to that. And the two injuries brought on tears as well. But this time those who made it to the next round were sobbing too, and by the end of the second day, even the judges were crying! More about all the emotion after the jump.

SYTYCD - VEGAS, BABY!!!!!

LVSYTYCD-LV_judges_7638_f.jpg
At last, So You Think You Can Dance has narrowed down the entire nation of dance competitors to just 152 on one stage showing off all kinds of genres as they compete for the top 20. Those are some grim odds, and seeing only the best from each audition city all mixed up together was pretty intense.

Starting out with solos up against solos allowed the dancers to show off their strengths again, but it also showed pretty starkly who was out of their depth here in Vegas. They cut 41 people just from seeing the solos, then they moved on to teaching choreography from specific styles. That's where we got to see who was too focused on a single form to truly be great across the board -- and who could "bring it" no matter what the music sounded like. (Can you believe the krumper doing ballroom? AMAZING!!)

So You Think You Can Dance: Beware the Tsetse Fly

602_MG_2131.jpgThe So You Think You Can Dance stop in Salt Lake City had some serious trained competition, but as is often the case with the audition episodes, the less trained competitors are just as (more?) entertaining.

We had great hopes for Bryan. His magenta hair with off-center skunky stripe and great attitude were so inviting, and when he said that he wanted to show the world that Utah had something to offer besides jazz dancers, we were enthralled. Mostly because we didn't know that Utah's claim to fame was jazz dancing. It was disappointing when he voluntarily dropped out of the competition 15 minutes into the choreography work.

Tristi was in 25 car accidents in 3 years, always as a passenger. Not sure how this is relevant to her dancing career, and it makes us wonder if someone has it out for this very nice girl because that's an amazing statistic. It also makes us wonder who the hell ever agrees to drive her anywhere, unless they're trying to trash their car. That's not her only misfortune: apparently told her that she should not show up to humiliate herself in front of the entire country.

The next riveting audition was Ariana, a local burlesque performer with the Voodoo Darlings whose stage name is Sateen LaRouge. Stripping for the judges had mixed results!  Nigel was a fan (shocking, we know).  Mia and Mary, not so much. At least she kept her routine to "PG or PG-13."  When her dress came off, her bottoms, sparkly spangly red jobbies, had a big bow on the rear.  Nigel asked her to turn around so he could have a better gander, and possibly the best quip of the show was his response.

Nigel: Show me that little bow on the back?
Sateen LaRouge: (turns around, wiggles)
Nigel: I'm glad to see you won first prize.
There's more after the jump -- keep reading!

SYTYCD New Orleans - There are rules for these things

602SYTYCD-phoenix_07_2862.jpg
So You Think You Can Dance auditions in New Orleans got off to a rough start with the judges looking.... well... let's just say it looked like they spent some time in the French Quarter the night before. There were a few slurred words. A questionable wardrobe choice. An off-color joke. Only one or two of the dancers looked drunk, though. They pretty much brought their A-game.

Some really talented dancers showed off amazing lifts, fantastic tumbling tricks, and a style of dance the judges had never seen called New Orleans Bounce. More details after the jump. (Including the three rules for how NOT to impress the judges.)

SYTYCD Atlanta - Yes, No, Maybe

602_MG_1922.jpg
Oh So You Think You Can Dance auditions... how we love to hate you and hate to love you. There's a certain amount of trainwreck-watching-can't-look-away-ness. The great dancers are really great and the bad dancers are really really really, embarrassingly bad. Yet they had the courage to get up there in front of the world and do their thing so you have to give them some props. Some. We do wish a few of them had just stayed home. More after the jump.

SYTYCD Live Blog: We've Got a Winner!

I am so nervous for tonight's finale of So You Think You Can Dance I may have just replaced Adam Shankman as the pee in the pants person of the night. The judge's panel was filled with the usual suspects along with Mia Michaels, Adam Shankman, Lil C and Debbie Allen. Jane Lynch was even in the audience! I love her!

judgesIMG_6273.jpg

To open the night's festivities, all of the top 20 dancers came to the stage to perform the Broadway tribune to The Wiz. I totally forgot about some of the previous dancers, oops! It was great to see Randi, Janette and Phillip again though.

top20IMG_3159.jpg

The night is filled with a giant rewind of the season and the judge's are going to tell us which routines stood out the most to them.

Adam's favorite routine of the season was from NappyTabs done by Phillip and Jeanine. I'm kind of shocked that the dancers needed to go back to those routines and dance them again! Way to kick it up a notch SYTYCD!

Nigel's favorite came from the Argentinian Tango choreographers, Mariam Larici and Leonardo Barrinuevo, who put a routine together for Janette and Brandon. I forgot how hot this routine was but it was Brandon's favorite to dance as well.

I'm going to stop for a moment and tell you I love Cat Deeley. She puts a smile on my face whenever she walks on the stage or opens her mouth. I could hear her say "Melisser" all day every day.

Debbie Allen's favorite routine came from Louis Van Amstel and was a Waltz between Asuka and Vitolio. I remember loving this one too and thinking those two should get their freak on if he wasn't already married. Oddly enough, I see no wedding ring on his hand tonight!

SYTYCD at the Press Tour: Paula, Ryan, Mia and More

Dancepanel_PG26952.jpgSo You Think You Can Dance broke out the big guns at the Fox Press Tour in Pasadena, sending some of this season's most popular dancers onto the stage for the visiting journalists. We saw Phillip popping and locking, Jason and Caitlin breaking out the Bollywood, and, most movingly, Melissa and Ade perform their breast cancer piece. Considering how little sleep we're all running on here, that last one was hardly fair -- and I can report that it's really hard to take notes when you're also surreptitiously wiping away tears.

Nigel Lythgoe, Cat Deeley, Mary Murphy, Mia Michaels and Adam Shankman met the press to spill on the show. Some highlights:

  • Yes, Nigel Lythgoe has talked to Paula Abdul about being a guest judge or having some other role on the show. But he has no interest in making her -- or anyone else -- a permanent third judge. And if she does come to guest-judge, he doesn't want to make a production about it. "It should never be about the judges -- it should always be about the talent up there." He's invited Paula to meet with him in Vegas during the season 6 auditions process.
  • Speaking of Vegas...Evan's brother, Ryan, has made it to the Vegas round. "I personally think Ryan is the better dancer," Nigel said, and the other panelists agreed. Fortunately, the press corps is less prone to booing, because if he'd said that in front of last night's audience? There may have been a riot.
  • What is it about Evan that makes him such a favorite this year? "He's certainly got the everyman touch -- he's such a lovely lad," Nigel said. "He's one of those kids that every mum would like for her son, and every sister would like for her brothers -- because she could probably beat him up."
  • It seems everyone loves that side of Evan. Nigel talked about some of the stuff we didn't see during last night's show: When the judges evaluated the "Nasty Boys" dance, "Brandon was getting incredibly uncomfortable," Nigel said. "He did not want to see us criticize Evan. he started holding him tighter and tighter." Awww...
  • But is Brandon always such a sweetheart? Mia Michael revealed why she's not his biggest fan. Part of it is about style -- her choreography is all about fluidity and connection, and Brandon, being "one big muscle -- he's the hardest-hitting dancer on the show" -- doesn't really fit with that aesthetic. But it's also because "I come down harder on dancers who are so good and who are not pushing themselves hard enough." Apparently, early in the process, Mia wasn't impressed with Brandon's work ethic -- or lack thereof. She's still not completely won over.
  • The judges emphasized again that the show isn't about finding the best dancer: "I don't believe the best dancer has ever won SYTYCD," Nigel said. Is that a hint on who wins -- or doesn't win -- tonight?

SYTYCD: The Final Four Heat Up The Stage

Last night brought out some of the best dancing of the season on So You Think You Can Dance. Guest host Adam Shankman was on hand to critique our final four dancers - Brandon, Kayla, Evan and Jeanine - and at this point it's anybody's competition to win (even if Evan's popularity is for his personality and not necessarily for his ability to kick ass and take names with his dancing skills).

One of the best parts about last night's show is that all of the dancers had a chance to dance with each other. The first routine brought out all four dancers doing a Wade and Amanda Robson Hip Hop routine.

top4090804_SYTYCD_0590.jpg
It was cutesy and had no hint of the weirdness I've come to love from a Wade routine, but it was still good.

The first couple to dance were Jeanine and Evan with a Jazz routine from Sonya. My goodness I love Sonya, but this routine was not one of her best and yet again, I was missing the dark underworld her routines usually bring out.

JEjazz090804_SYTYCD_0734.jpg
Verdict
Us:
It stinks that I feel this way but Evan just can't carry a routine and it ends up distracting me during most of the dances. I don't feel like this was challenging enough for the two of them and while Jeanine stood out more, it wasn't something that would warrant a Mary Murphy scream from my couch.

Adam: He felt like he underestimated the two of them at the beginning of the season. He was proud of them.

Mary: Liked it but Evan didn't stand out for her.

Nigel: Jeanine is tops but Evan dragged a bit. I'm fairly certain the judges aren't too pleased with Evan being in the top 4 even though they really like him as a person.

SYTYCD Recap: The Final Four Have Been Chosen

Last night solidified our final four dancers on season 5 of So You Think You Can Dance. As I'm sure you're well-aware (if you've read this blog before), I am not happy with the outcome. As one of our commenters said a few posts ago, "It's not about who the best dancer is, it's who America likes the most." That being said, I'm sure the judges (and definitely my Mom) can agree that America got it wrong once again. At least there was some great dancing to watch before the letdown began.

What I loved: Seeing the season 4 dancers bring back their Emmy-nominated dances. Did anyone else notice the intense kissing between Twitch and Katee? I mean, get a room! It was also fun to see The JabbaWockeeZ do a routine (eventhough it was kind of slow-paced and didn't include a whole lot of different choreography).

SYTYCD Recap: The "It's Buck" Stops Here

When will So You Think You Can Dance guest judge Lil C stop with the "that was buck" already? Hearing about his ranting and rambling made me just a little bit happy that I didn't actually watch last night's episode. I'll be watching it tonight but last night was filled with meetings and airports followed by text messages saying, "OMG Brandon is on fire! He's amazing!" and a note from my Mom on my Facebook wall saying, "Now that my favorite is out (America got it wrong!!!) my new favorite is Brandon. What a solo!!"

So obviously I can't wait to see Brandon's performances and Sonya's group choreography. If you'd like to catch up with and give your opinions on last night's recap, check out It Happened Last Night.

SYTYCD Recap: 100th Episode

On a very special episode of So You Think You Can Dance, the amazing Mia Michaels choreographed a very interesting, neo-futuristic looking routine to A Chorus Line.  We had a lot of great performances, Emmy-nominated ones at that, and a special one from Katie Holmes. Of course, we also had to say goodbye to another couple (insert some serious expletives here) which is why Cat Deeley hates Thursdays.

The opening montage of past performances totally gave me chills. I'm not sure if it was the Polyphonic Spree song playing in the background or what, but I got a little choked up.

The girls were up first to find out who was in the bottom two and Kayla and Janette, two of my overall favorites, were put in it. How did this happen!! It's my own fault though, I didn't vote.

We were then treated to Wade Robson's fantastic season 3 routine, "The Hummingbird and the Flower", which was performed so well by its original dancers, Hawk and Jamie.

Next, we got to find out which of the boys was in the bottom two. Jason and Brandon didn't get enough votes which is just ridiculous. Seriously? Evan has never been in the bottom? I get it, he's sweet, he's the underdog with the droopy puppy dog eyes. But let's be honest here, he's not the best dancer. Get with the program people.
