Using plants to keep your home more secure…a thorny issue

crown%20of%20thorns.jpg

Crown of Thorns - lovely to look at but not to touch

Landscaping under windows with plants that have thorns or sharp leaves is inexpensive and a beautiful way to help deter burglars.

In South Florida Bougainvillea, Crown of Thorns, Spanish Bayonet and the Spanish Dagger are perfect choices. And they are as wicked as they are beautiful

When planted under windows, anyone who gets too close to these "guard plants" will regret it.
As a reminder they can be a hazard to children and pets - so don't plant them near walkways or play areas.

Although all of these plants are all low maintenance, they do have to be trimmed or they will overgrow an area.

Experts say plants should beautify your home not hide it - shrubs and plants in the yard that are allowed to grow over 2-feet high can be hiding places - yard maintenance is important.

Police suggest further enhancing landscape security by using motion detector flood lights that are placed in hard-to-reach areas so bad guys can't render them inoperative.

For more information, read Brian Haas' article in the Sun-Sentinel, How to landscape your home for safety.

Team%20Hoyt.jpg

Team Hoyt - Dick Hoyt and his son, Rick.

"When we run I don't feel like I'm handicapped," Rick Hoyt, now 46, typed on the computer to his father, Dick Hoyt, now 65, years ago after their first run together. The family lives in Massachusetts.

Since then Team Hoyt has run countless marathons and recently completed an Ironman.

This incredibly inspiring video showcases the love of a father for his son and it is awesome.

Watch this 15-second YouTube video to see how unsafe an infant or child's car seat is after the expiration date

restraints.jpg
Source

Yes, infant and children's car seats have expiration dates. I had no idea.

Infant's and children's car seats are unsafe after 6-years. An expiration date is written on every car seat.

Car seats expire after that date - not when you buy it.

Car seats expire because the webbing, which is used to make the straps weakens from years of exposure to heat, cold and food.

Expired web sites should be destroyed. Car seats should not be passed on to other siblings or sold.

Delray Beach residents who cannot afford to buy an infant car seat can contact The Delray Beach Fire-Rescue Department at 561.243.7422.

Every year 1,800 children under 14 die from auto accidents making car accidents the biggest cause of death for children.

Watch this 15 second Youtube video to see what can happen during an accident with an expired car seat.

Want a real deal - check your neighbor's trash

trash.jpg

Both the golf clubs and golf bag and ceramic stand were rescued from my neighbor's trash and both work perfectly for me. Total cost - absolutely nothing.

Drive around your neighborhood the night before trash pick-up and you'll see there are a multitude of treasures being tossed away.

I recently decided to take up golf again so finding the clubs could not be more perfect. I use the stand to hold a huge fern on my porch - it gets rave reviews.

Take a drive through other developments too - you never know what fabulous finds await you.

Broken promises from the Mayor of Delray Beach and the City Commissioners

Since the 1940’s Bloods Hammock Groves of Delray Beach has stood at the end of Old Germantown Rd., just off Linton Blvd. in Delray Beach.

Bloods is a family owned business and piece of history long touted by the City and the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce.

In 2006 Bloods announced they were closing. The family posted a letter stating that they could not afford to make all of the improvements the City was forcing them to make so they had to move. The landmark business moved to Lantana.

In place of this authentic piece of history, a 3-story professional building is being built built and perhaps 160+ three-story townhouses.

The wildlife who lived there are being driven away and in one day’s time, the large variety of trees and fauna that flourished there for over 50-years are dead.

After promises of stopping development from both our mayor and city commissioners before they were elected, this is what we get. If you haven't seen it, I suggest driving by and taking a look for yourself.

What do you think?
