Golden Age Pass - new name

Formerly known as the Golden Age Passport, the America the Beautiful National
Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass allows many people to enjoy traveling,
camping, and sight seeing at our national parks and recreation areas.
The lifetime senior pass is for U.S. citizens or permanent residents age 62
or over. The senior pass provides access to, and use of, Federal recreation
sites that charge an entrance fee.

The senior pass admits the pass holder and passengers in a non-commercial
vehicle at “per vehicle” fee areas and pass holder plus 3 adults, not to exceed
4 adults (children under 16 are admitted free).

zion-national-park.jpg

The senior pass can only be obtained in person at a national park, recreational
area, or monument where an entrance fee is charged and at forestry ranger stations.

The senior pass provides a 50 percent discount on some Expanded Amenity
Fees charged for facilities and services such as camping, swimming, boat launch,
and specialized interpretive services. In some cases where Expanded Amenity
Fees are charged, only the pass holder will be given the 50 percent price reduction.

The senior pass is non-transferable and generally does NOT cover or reduce
special recreation permit fees or fees charged by concessionaires.

You must show proof of age such as a driver’s license, birth certificate,
or similar document. There is an $10 processing charge to obtain the senior pass.

In Palm Beach County, you can go to Loxahatchee Preserve. It is a National
Recreation Park and part of America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal
Recreational Lands Pass Program.

interactive web help for patients

WebMD magazine can be found in the waiting rooms of most physicians.
I like to read it because it contains useful articles about the newest breakthroughs
in medicine. Some recent articles addressed: children's cold medicines, overeating,
hemorrhoids, strep throat, and why garlic is good for you. Other articles
gave detailed information about nicotine patches, PMS, and rheumatoid
arthritis. Ask your doctor for one of his/her free copies. Patients are supposed to
read them. Become an informed patient!

One feature I found interesting and useful is their web site called "symptomchecker."
This site does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, nor treatment. But,
when you are trying to determine which doctor to call, because you are not certain
about how to describe or to detail your symptoms, this site can be quite helpful.
By answering a series of questions, you will receive information on the names of
conditions, diseases, and medications. This is an interactive tool to help you
identify your problem.

November 22, 1963 - The day JFK died

Our 35th U.S. President, John F. Kennedy died on this day, November 22,
1963. His presidency inspired Americans to explore space, volunteer
service through the Peace Corps, and to become involved in public
service. His words, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask
what you can do for your country ," are his legacy.
He asked Congress to pass a Civil Rights Bill: "This nation, for all its boasts,
will not be fully free until all its citizens are free," he declared on national T.V.
By inspiring change and demonstrating his dedication, he truly was the
Profile in Courage, written as he recovered from
back surgery.
Let us all remember his words and his deeds, as we recall his memory
on this date.

Florida Traffic Laws - FYI -from PBSO

Have you ever been stopped by a patrol officer for a traffic infraction?
The excuse, "I didn't know the law," is not acceptable.
So, FYI, Captain Bechtel, PBSO Commander of District 6 would like you to
know these important traffic laws:
· Definition of running a red light is entering an intersection as the light turns
red. You must stop at the stop bar before the pedestrian crosswalk.

· You CANNOT make a U turn when the traffic light is red.

· A person making a right turn has the right of way, regardless of you having
a green left turning arrow.

· At a 4 way stop intersection you need to yield to the vehicle to your right.
When traffic lights are not working at a major intersection, the prudent way
would be to turn right and crossover at the next opportunity, go left and
make a right turn at the major intersection.

· Running a red light at an intersection that has “Red Light Cameras” is
a civil infraction not a traffic infraction. The owner of the car must pay
a fine, but doesn’t accumulate points on his/her license.

· Signaling a turn means the driver would like to make a turn into another
lane and can legally do so providing he/she doesn’t impede traffic.

· When passing another vehicle, the driver must make sure that another
vehicle is not passing his vehicle (at the same time).

· If a driver gets a ticket for a violation that can be fixed (light out, window
tint too dark, etc.) and it is fixed, he/she can ask any police officer to sign off
stating the item has been fixed to code. Then mail in ticket into the court.
That person will receive a reduced fine. ( Also may be done at any substation.)

· Any vehicle coming upon a stopped school bus displaying a flashing stop
signal must stop on both sides of the road. The exception being that if the
road has an unpaved median of 5 feet or more, a raised median or barrier
the vehicle doesn’t have to stop if traveling on the opposite direction of the
school bus. On a 4 or 5 lane highway, traffic must stop in both directions,
when a school bus displays its flashing stop signs.

· It is against the law to use a headset when operating a vehicle or a bike.

The District 6 website is up and running. To reach it type PBSO.ORG into your
browser. When the Sheriff’s website opens click on District 6. There are
new features for the public; you can file many reports on the site. You can also
enter the site through the COBWRA website at: linkingcommunities.com/cobwra

Fall folliage - what I miss seeing

As a child, growing up in the Brooklyn, New York section of Crown Heights,
I fondly recall our annual family "road trip" to see the fall foliage. My dad
loved to take us up to the Catskill Mountains to see the leaves change
color. Mom would pack a hearty lunch (wrapped in waxed-paper), a Thermos
of coffee, a blanket, and some damp towels (there were no Handiwipes).
We would always stop at a road stand for fresh corn, apples or other fresh
produce. A visit to the Red Apple Rest was a given, since that was MY favorite
part of the whole trip!
Leaves.jpg
What I really miss is the experience of seeing the trees change from green
to yellow, then orange, and burgundy red. As we climbed to higher elevations and
as we drove further north, the more magnificent the trees became.
Today, as a Floridian, fall foliage is something I really do miss.
Our recent trip to Arcadia National Park, in Maine, gave
us a brief glimpse of yellow/orange leaves, and that was in August.
If you miss the colors of fall, log on to Yankee magazine's fall foliage Web site,
www.yankeefoliage.com. There are many New England sites to view, including
orchards, road trips, and scenic drives.

Remembering Forgotten Soldiers

The Not-for-Profit corporation Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, Inc., began in October, 2003. It is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to shipping packages to our U.S. Troops deployed overseas. Their success is due to the collaboration of communities, schools, businesses and other organizations whose desire it is to encourage and inspire our uniformed men and women, for as long as they are deployed.

The founders, Lynelle Chauncey Baggett and William Baggett, Jr. have worked tirelessly to publicize this organization and to help it expand. The average cost of sending a box of necessities to a soldier is approximately $19.00. The box typically includes: snack foods, toiletries, magazines, etc. Many community fund-raising groups have taken up this cause and, by placing envelopes on the tables of luncheons, etc., they have collected hundreds of dollars from our area.

Would you like to write to a soldier? There is an on line form to enter a message that will be sent to a random soldier............or............you may register the name of a person who is serving at this time.
For more information or if you are interested in contributing or if you would like to write to a member of our armed services, click on www.Forgottensoldiers.org.
If you wish to call:
561-369-2933. Check or money order donations should be made payable
to Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, Inc and mailed to:
