Old tires on new cars - look out!

I found this ABC News article about tires very interesting. Here's an excerpt:

"The U.S. tire industry is refusing to give American motorists the same warning
given to car owners in Europe and Asia about the possible dangers of tires six
years old or older. More than 100 deaths in the U.S. have been attributed to aged
tires which dried out and lost their treads, even though they appeared to be
safe, according to Sean Kane, who heads a private auto safety firm and
consults with the federal government.

With no warning from the industry or the federal government, safety experts
say the only way for consumers to protect themselves is to learn how to read
the cryptic code embedded on a tire's sidewall which reveals the year and week
a tire was manufactured.

A full report on how to break the code appeared on the ABC News program
"20/20," a few weeks ago.

The code is at the end of a jumble of letters and numbers on the tire and,
until recently, was on the inward side of the tire requiring motorists to climb
under the car to read the number.

For example, the number 418 indicates the tire was manufactured in the 41st
week of 1998 and is 10 years old.

"U.S. consumers are left in the dark on this issue," said Kane.

A tire older than six years old, even if it's never been driven a mile, "is like a
ticking time bomb. You don't know what's going on inside. That's what makes
it so dangerous," said Kane in an interview for broadcast on "20/20."

Delray/Boynton chapter + Boca Chap. Hearing Loss merger

Oscar Segal, President of the Delray/Boynton Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America ( formerly called SHHH-Self Help for Hard of Hearing), and Geraldine Young, President of the Boca Chapter announce a merger of the two chapters which will now be known as the South Palm Beach County Chapter—Delray/Boynton/Boca.
The first meeting of the newly combined chapter will take place Friday, January 16, 2009 at the South County Civic Center; Jog Road, Delray Beach at 10 A.M. Future meetings will take place the third Friday of each month at this location through May 2009. These meetings are free of charge, open to the public. Membership in the chapter for a nominal annual fee is encouraged.

The Delray/Boynton Chapter is a local chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America, founded 19 years ago. It is the largest chapter in South Florida, dedicated to helping people cope with hearing loss. The chapter has guest speakers who are professional audiologists, hearing doctors and surgeons, manufacturers of hearing aids and displays a variety of assistive hearing devices that can help the hard of hearing communicate better in a hearing world. Professionals from police, sheriff’s, fire departments and emergency services also speak at meetings about how hearing impaired people can best communicate with law enforcement, and fire responders in emergency situations.

Board member Merry Rubenstein provides a free lip reading course to chapter members at the Emmanuel Catholic Church, Military Trail, north of Linton Blvd. the first Tuesday of each month at 1:00 PM. Register with Merry at (561) 738-5630.

Geraldine Young, known to all as Geri, founded the Boca Raton chapter in 1993 when she first moved to Boca. Present board members include: Anita Morse, Janice Pickron, Joe and Hilda Kriteman, Regina Weiss, Irv and Millye Cohen, Rachel Landau, Etta Lampner, Rhoda Rabson, Irving Glass and Harriet Harris.

The public is invited to attend the January 16 meeting at 10 A.M. at the South County Civic Center, where Doctor of Audiology Steven D. Sederholm, Au.D, will be the principal speaker to tell the audience about “What’s new in hearing aid technology - audiologic advancements in restoring speech comprehension in hearing aids.”

Signs of having a stroke - important new information

INFORMATION EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW........................
Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters....S.T.R.

A neurologist says that if he could get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he could totally reverse the effects of a stroke, totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Remember the '3' steps, S T R Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke: Ask the person to 'stick out’ his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

Thanks to Mort Mazor, Delray Beach Blogger, for this timely information

How to protect yourself from ID theft

Here are some good ideas to save and to copy for your files in case
you need to refer to it sometime in the future:
1) Think about writing this on the back of your credit card, INSTEAD of your signature: " "PHOTO ID REQUIRED".
2) Do you pay credit card or department store bills by check? Do you
walk out to your mailbox the night before or early in the morning? Thieves are
looking for your check and signature! DO NOT put the complete account
number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The department
store, electric company, credit card company know the rest.
3) Place the contents of your wallet face down on a copy machine
(your passport, too). Copy both sides of each card/document. In case of loss
or theft, you have a complete record of your card/ID.
4) Keep a record of the phone #s to call to cancel credit cards in case of loss or theft.
5) Never carry your Social Security card in your wallet!
6)Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. Most people have never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that calls to tell you an application for credit was made over the Internet in your name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.
.

Now, here are the numbers you need to save:

1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
2.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
3.) Trans Union : 1-800-680-7289
4.) Social Security Administration and FTC (fraud line):
