Elderhostel - a great way to travel

Elderhostel is the world's largest educational travel organization for
senior adults. It was founded in 1975 and, today, boasts over 4 million
participants in its programs. Elderhostel offers the opportunity to travel
to countries all over the world to learn about its people, culture, food,
architecture and just about anything the country has to offer.

Participants may log on to their web site or receive huge catalogs by
mail with offers of lectures, trips, excursions and transportation.
Over the past several years, my husband and I have enjoyed learning
about the cities of New Orleans and San Franscisco, through the
Elderhostel Signature City series. We have also traveled to New Mexico,
where we enjoyed bus excursions (with excellent motel accomodations)
to Taos, Sante Fe, and Alburquerque. Our meals were included and we
had excellent tour guides and instructors.

Each program falls under one of six activity levels, from limited physical ability
to being able to climb stairs and to walk long distances. Travel is often by bus,
train and sometimes boat.

Valentine's Day - history and fun

How did sending Valentine cards become so popular around the world? What is
the historical background of this "holiday?" What crafts can my family make,
besides purchasing cards, to save money?

All of these questions can be answered for you in a highly entertaining way -
on your computer. On the site: History.com, there are several videos to choose
from about romance; How chocolate is made (Hershey Corp.); Valentines
around the world, and lots more. Okay, so there are some commercials,
but it is easy to click on the "skip" choice to ignore them. You will learn lots
of interesting stuff about Valentines for the whole family.

Another interesting site is:
http://www.kaboose.com/features/valentines/valentines-cab.html
This site offers lots of ideas for crafts and cards for all ages.
Have a great Valentine's Day and remember to tell someone you love him/her!

What's happening at Green Cay in February 2009?

gcnewlogo_small.jpg

Green Cay Wetlands and Nature Center is located at 12800 Hagen Ranch Road,
west of Boynton Beach between Boynton Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue.
The wetlands are open seven days a week, from sunrise to sunset.

frog.jpg

Why not explore the wetlands' habitat to see the birds, mammals, reptiles, insects,
and fish? Inside the Nature Center there are educational exhibits and guides to
answer your questions. There is a lovely gift shop, too.

From Palm Beach County Parks & Recreation Department: "THE GREEN CAY
PROJECT is built on farmland formerly owned by Ted and Trudy Winsberg.
Construction began in 2003 as a nature center and wetland, using nutrient-rich
water that is pumped into the wetland from a nearby wastewater treatment plant.
As the water flows through the wetland, the plants and soil naturally filter the
water and reintroduce it into the water cycle."

Feb. 14th - PLANTS & PEOPLE: 2:00 P.M. $3.00 - All ages. Learn about Florida
native plants and how they were used by different cultures.

Februay 18th - 2:00 P.M. $5.00 -SCIENCE FOR SENIORS -

animals, from pythons to escaped birds.

February 28th - 10:00 A.M. - STORY AND CRAFT TIME - $2.00 per child
Ages 3-5. Stories, crafts about animals and other nature-related themes
will be learned.

Bring out the child in yourself - enjoy the beach

Beachfun1.jpg

Everyone should enjoy the beach. After all, we live in Florida! We live so close
to the ocean, why don't we go more often? I know that before I moved here,
I couldn't wait to dive into the water or to just sit on the sand and feel the
ocean breeze and salt air.

Children know how to enjoy the beach. They don't think about it. They just
explore it. Dig, dump, build, experiment - over and over and over. That's
because their minds are free and clear.

So, here's a thought. Are you feeling dreary? Are you tired and bored?
Are you overworked? Well, take a break! Grab a blanket or a chair, some
sun screen and a hat. Head over to the beach.
Pretend you are a child. Just close your eyes. Breath in the air. Feel it. Enjoy it.
Wiggle your toes in the sand.

You're a Floridian! Enjoy our beautiful beaches.
