Greater Boynton Beach Foundation Groundbreaking 2/14/2011

On Valentine's Day, February 14, 2011, the Greater Boynton Beach Foundation

Chairman of the greater Boynton Beach Foundation, John McGovern, spoke
to the audience, detailing the years of hard work it took to build a park
that would be accessible to everyone, regardless of age or ability.
Members of Hunter's Run, with COWBRA and many
local businesses and charitable contributors, worked together to build
a "Legacy of a Better Boynton Beach - from the Ocean to the Everglades."

New Boynton Foundation Inaugural Event - Feb. 14, 2011

New Boynton Foundation to Host Inaugural Event on 2-14.

The Greater Boynton Beach Foundation has just been created to further parks, recreation, education and culture, from the ocean to the Everglades. The Foundation is partnership between the City of Boynton Beach, the Coalition of Boynton West Residential Associations (COBWRA) and the Greater Boynton Beach Chamber of Commerce. The nascent charity is noteworthy for bucking the trend of creating a new nonprofit in a three-year economic slough.

The Greater Boynton Beach Foundation will hold its inaugural event, a ground breaking and cocktail reception, for a 13.5-acre barrier-free park on Congress Avenue, on Monday, February 14th at 5:30 p.m. near Hunters Run and the city tennis courts in Boynton Beach. Visitors may park for free at WXEL. Cost is $20. RSVP required.

"We choose to work on a single project for now," said GBBF president John McGovern. "And that project is a $2.3 million park that has been in on the drawing board for eight years. Our goal is to raise the final $500,000." McGovern also directs Palm Beach County’s Long Term Care Ombudsman program for the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.

“We chose the theme, ‘Love Without Boundaries,’ and the date, Valentine’s Day, because this park will be obstacle free and accessible to all who wish to benefit from it,” said Sharon Geltner, a founding board member and president of Froogle PR, a special events and Internet marketing firm. She also volunteers for COBWRA.

"Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Lake Worth and West Palm Beach have all done wonderful things for their communities. Well, Boynton Beach is right in the middle of them and has a lot going for it. We want to add more amenities and improve the quality of life, right here," Geltner added.

Volunteer Janelle Sloan, a retired Hunters Run resident, who helps several area charities including Caridad, is planning the special event. She said, “The new park will be designed for full access for people with disabilities, as well as senior citizens, returning veterans and anyone who cares to enjoy the peaceful setting.”

Holiday gift giving for teachers

Dear Parents & Grandparents,
As a retired teacher and (still) substitute teacher, I work in
several elementary schools from Boca Raton to Lake Worth.
According to a survey by the national School Supply and
Equipment Association, 94% of teachers surveyed say they
spend out-of-pocket more than $300. each year. Yes, parents
send in crayons and markers and tissues in the fall, however
there is so much more that classrooms need.
At parent conference time, each fall, I would make a list
to hang on the "chalk board" for the parents to read. On that
list were requests for items that students need ALL YEAR.
I displayed the dictionaries, thesauruses, games and chess sets
that I had accumulated (without any missing pieces!)
I send this message to everyone. Instead of a gift card for
a manicure, think about giving your child's teacher something
needed for the classroom. By the way, globes, electric
pencil sharpeners and similar instructional items are greatly needed.
Here are some sites to read teacher wish-lists to help you:

Bronze Star awarded to Boynton resident Dr. Marvin Hamburg

MARVIN HAMBURG AWARDED BRONZE STAR

Marvin%20Hamburg.jpg

(Left) Dr. Marvin Hamburg, daughter Andi Hamburg, Natalie Hamburg, US Congressman, Ted Deutsch.

Former Jewish Genealogy Society of Palm Beach County, Inc., President, Marvin Hamburg received the Bronze Star in a ceremony held at Indian Spring Country Club on September 7, 2010.  JGSPBCI members and friends proudly shared Marvin’s joy at receiving the delayed but much deserved honor presented by US Congressman Ted Deutsch.
During WWII, Marvin and another soldier were stationed at a bridge at Remagen, Germany and told the bridge was the prize to be held for allies to cross into Germany. He and another soldier dug fox holes for themselves while half a dozen "88” artillery guns were aimed at them.
Although Marvin was wounded in his left thigh and evacuated to a hospital in Paris, he did not realize that all of this had transpired on his birthday.
One of his last recollections, upon being placed under anesthesia, were the words whispered to him by a French nurse, “Happy 21st Birthday, soldier.”

Donating/recycling your old cellphones

You can donate your phone for refurbishment and redistribution for a
potentially valuable second life before disposal. Many organizations collect
cell phones as donations for refurbishment and redistribution. Here are
the names of four groups that accept your old phones.

American Cellular Donation Organization -
Assists churches, schools and other nonprofit organizations to raise funds
through used cell phone donation drives. All nonworking phones are recycled
according to USEPA guidelines so they stay out of landfills.
Working phones are refurbished and channeled to those who need
wireless communication but
would otherwise not be able to have it. All proceeds from working phones
are returned to the donating organization. (www.cellulardonation.org/)

AT&T Wireless - includes multiple recycling and
donation programs. (www.attwireless.com/our_company/
cares/recycle_program.jhtml)

Cell Phones for Soldiers - A program that helps
our troops call home. (http://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com/)

Charitable Recycling Program - making it easy to
dispose of used cell phones. (www.charitablerecycling.com/

Volunteering - There is a great need

Recently, I lost a good friend who had fought a brave battle against Cancer.
Many friends and family members gave her love, support and the companionship
she needed to maintain her daily existence. Some people don't have that
network of family and friends and turn to Hospice for much-needed assistance.
Hospice of Palm Beach County (as well as other Hospice centers in Florida)
offers many free services to terminally ill patients. Right now, they have a great
need of help themselves.
Volunteers visit terminally ill patients at home, at nursing facilities, and at
hospitals. They chat with patients, play cards, bring allowed snacks, books,
and a ray of sunshine, too. Often, a volunteer may bring a dog or cat along,
to share their time with a terminally ill person.
VITAS is one Hospice Care office in Boynton Beach which provides care for
people facing death. If you have a few hours a week to volunteer, give Christie
Geltz, volunteer services manager ofr VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, a call
at561 733-6332. She can also be contacted at: Christie.Geltz@Vitas.com.

Volunteers needed at the V.A. Hospital

Volunteering is Rewarding, by Temi Horowitz, guest blogger

When I retired to Palm Beach with my husband Al, elelven years ago I thought I'd finally have plenty of time to do all the things I'd always wanted to do, but didn't have time for. Should take a course at the local college, try my hand at ceramics or painting or art appreciation? Perhaps, I would learn to play tennis or Mah Jongg.

Eventually, I took courses at F.A.U. in their L.L.S (Lifelong learning program); I joined a gym; I went bowling; I did try to learn how to play Mah Jongg, (I was terrible). I met friends for lunch. I was Busy, Busy, Busy.

It was all exciting and new, but, believe it or not, something was missing and I didn't know what. Then about five years ago, my husband became ill and we didn't leave the house, except to go to Doctors or the V.A. Hospital in West Palm Beach. While there, I heard about their volunteer program and I saw how much they seemed to enjoy helping people. I saw the camaraderie of the volunteers, and I decided to submit an application.

I was accepted into the program and I love it. I volunteer for about five hours, one day a week, which still leaves me free to take a course at FAU-LLS, go to the gym, and meet friends for lunch during the week. I'm happy helping others; it is very rewarding and I've made a batch of new friends. What could be better! And as my husband says, "It's one day less leaving money at the mall."

With the arrival of young Veteran Women, returning from Afghanistan and Iraq, the Veteran's Hospital in West Palm Beach is seeing young children accompanying their parents when they come in for appointments. Some of the Volunteers have taken it upon themselves to bring in books for children to read, which are put in the women's clinic. Although we would also like to get some crayons and coloring books, we were told that onlyCrayola "Colorwonder" Crayons and Paper were permitted, so we have ordered that from the Crayola Company. This product only works together and not on "any other surface." The children, of course, love them.

If anyone would like to contribute these items, or If you are interesting in becoming a volunteer, call the Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Volunteer Services, in West Palm Beach, at 1-561-422-7373. Temi is sure they would love to hear from you.

Volunteer of the Year - PBC School District - Ira Klosk

Congratulations to Ira Klosk, Palm beach County School District's senior
school volunteer of the year. Ira has been volunteering at Poinciana
Elementary School for several years. He has a stamp collecting "lunch
time with the students," where each participating child receives stamps
from around the world which they have to locate on world maps.

Mr. Klosk has personally recruited hundreds of other senior volunteers
who donate their time to help students to read and study. In addition,
Ira has been teaching every kindergarten student in the school to play
chess.

Caridad Center - medical and dental family services

The Caridad Center is located at 8645 W. Boynton Beach Blvd.
This facility provides free medical and dental care to low-income families
in the Boynton Beach area.
The Center has over 500 volunteers: doctors, dentists, nurses and others who
donate their time and skills. All services are FREE. Last year, there were
approximately 25,000 visits by over 7,000 people from 2,000 families.
About 25% of the patients are children, however many senior citizens have
begun to use the free dental servicesl.

In addition, the Outreach Program provides food vouchers, college scholarships,
rent assistance, school supplies and help with FPL bills, if needed.

The after school enrichment program currently serves over 50 children grades K-5.
Children who are waiting for their parents to receive free care now have a place to
play. There is a gazebo, playground equipment and an area to safely run around.
If you would like to donate children's books for the indoor waiting area, please drop
them off at the center.

Patients in hospitals need privacy and rest

Friends and family worry about you when you are in the hospital.
Out of their concern for your well-being, they decide to visit you.
Often, hospital stays are frightening to the patient as well as to their family.
Having to put on a "pretty face" or being met by visitors after just returning
from a test or procedure makes everyone feel uncomfortable.

When someone must be in the hospital for surgery, tests, or
monitoring, visitors are exactly what they do not need.
Patients who have had long-term hospital or rehabilitation stays may
"send the word" to their friends that they need company. That is an
invitation to visit. If you do not receive an invitation, please call the
spouse or child of the patient to find out if a visit is welcome.
Visitation preference goes to close family members, not to neighbors, nor to
tennis and bowling buddies.

I hope people cut this out and save it on their refrigerator door or bulletin
board, so that they can remember it before they plan to visit someone in the hospital.

Ability to laugh at oneself OR am I losing it???

On Thursday, July 31st, I finally got around to reading an e-mail I had received
containing a coupon for $5.00 off of a purchase of $20.00 at Walgreen's.
Of course, I had received this e-mail days before, but neglected to open it.
Looking at my kitchen clock, I noticed that it was 4:30 P.M, my supper was
not prepared, and I was being picked up at 7:30 for a card game.
Quickly gathering my coupons (I never shop without coupons), I drove to
the corner of Jog and Piper's Glen, where I knew there was a "drug store."
In a matter of ten minutes, I had everything on my list that had been featured
"on sale" in Walgreen's. After waiting for my turn at the register, the cashier
and I had the following discourse:
"Ma'am, this coupon is not good."
"Why, of course it is good. Its expiration date is July 31st. That's today, I
stammered."
(By this time there were at least four people behind me on line and a few others
nearby at another register.)
"Ma,am, these are coupons for Walgreen's and you are in a CVS, exclaimed the cashier."
Feeling flushed, embarrassed and surely blushing, I edged as far away from the
register as I could without hitting anyone or any displays. I returned my items
to the shelves and exited the store. I could hear gentle laughter behind me,
including several comments:
"Oh, I forget stuff all the time."
"See what happens when you get older, you get mixed up."
Suddenly, I burst out laughing. I drove to Walgreen's on Jog and Woolbright.
As I entered, I noticed a young woman with a counter full of baby products
and diapers. The register total was already over $30.00. I handed the
woman my coupon, told her, "Here's a gift," and I drove home.
I enjoyed a nice glass of red wine, had supper, and waited to be picked up
for my card game.

Doing good deeds. Donating unwanted cellphones.

Do you believe there are about 600 million obsolete cellphones, already, in the U.S.?

If you have one lying around your home, office, or glove compartment, you can
recycle it, and do a good deed! Log on the www.gooddeedfoundation.org/aarp.
Follow the easy prompts to receive a postage-paid envelope and/or collection
box for your community or office. Some of the phones will be sold, with the
proceeds going to programs that help women and escape poverty. Some
phones will go to older citizens, so that they can make 911 calls.

Why not think about it, now! Talk about it with you family, friends and
office workers. Doing good deeds makes everyone feel GOOD.
