Vizcaya residents attend Susan G. Komen fund raiser

Vizcaya residents attend Susan G. Komen fund raiser
Saturday April 26, sponsored by their TGIF Club.

The main ballroom of the Vizcaya clubhouse was filled with 135 residents, friends and relatives this past Saturday evening at 7:30 P.M.—many of them cancer survivors themselves—to raise money for the Susan G. Komen cancer research fund. The evening was hosted by Vizcaya TGIFRustyJack.jpg
residents Event Chairlady Rusty Rosenblatt and TGIF President Jack Prestigiacomo. Mike Jacobs served as MC and auctioneer.

Snacks, sodas and set-ups were provided. DJ’s John and Tina provided dance music. Coffee and cake was served at the conclusion of the evening.

Every one attending had the opportunity to win a door prize with the small red ticket they received when they made their reservation for the event. Most important was the generosity of the residents to purchase raffle tickets and bid on the quality items that
were put up for auction such as framed art and gift certificates.

A total of $3,200 was collected that will go to the charity for this important research.

Florida Health News.org HMO Article

BobS.Smiling.jpg
Alliance of Delray members are aware that President Bob Schulbaum has contacted U. S. Congressman Wexler and Palm Beach County State legislators to register the Alliance’s dismay at once again discovering wide disparities between HMO patient benefits paid to subscribers in Miami-Dade as compared to Palm Beach County residents. The difference is $233 more a month per member for 2008, and scheduled to go up to $344 more per month, per member in 2009.

Schulbaum has persuaded the elected officials on behalf of Alliance members, to send letters requesting Gov. Crist to reduce the rate of disparity to bring Palm Beach County closer to Miami-Dade.

“This is the second time in the past three years,” said Schulbaum “we have had to fight this inequity, seeking the help of our elected officials. It was changed then by the incumbent Governor and it should be changed now.”

This topic was the subject of a wide ranging, in-depth April 18 article by Ms. Susan Jaffe, reporter for Florida Health News, which you can read in its entirety by clicking on their site on the web at http://www.floridahealthnews.org/index.cfm/go/public.articleView/article/6906

George C. Fraser, Networking Guru

We were impressed recently with an article on the internet by Mr. George C. Fraser. He offers Tips to “Click” when meeting people, either in business or socially. Mr. Fraser kindly gave us permission to reproduce his article in this space.

(This is the final installment of the George Fraser Top Ten Tips to CLICK: From 1 to 10. Top 10 Tips to "CLICK" Quick

By George C. Fraser, Founder and CEO of FraserNet, Inc.

Geo.Fraser2.jpg
I've accomplished a lot as America's networking guru, but my beginnings were humble. I was born in Brooklyn, New York, into a family of 11 children (8 boys and 3 girls). At the age of three I was placed in foster homes where I spent the next 15 years. The difficulty of those years and growing up on the streets of New York left me with little hope and few expectations.

Although my guidance counselor suggested I drop out of high school, I graduated from high school with a vocational diploma in woodworking; the school system did not consider me college material. Thank God I felt differently. For several years, I mopped floors on the midnight shift at LaGuardia Airport while I attended college.

Over the next three decades, I used my Ten Truths and tapped into the hundreds of relationships I developed to build one of the largest professional networking organizations in America. It was my way of testifying to the spiritual paradigm of ONENESS and the power of people working together. It is also a testimony of the strength of one man who dared to dream—despite insurmountable odds.

I believe the goal of all networking is to CLICK: to create the win-win. For those in business, "time is money." To this end, CLICK: Ten Truths to Building Extraordinary Relationships helps answer two critical questions: Do you find yourself wasting time networking and investing in business relationships that don't add value? And, why do some business relationships never work and others seem to CLICK?

From a personal perspective, doesn't it feel good when you CLICK (create a win-win) with someone? Wouldn't you like to know how to do it more often and enjoy the benefits of extraordinary relationships in your business and life? The following Top 10 Tips to CLICK will give you the tools you need to build extraordinary relationships in business and in life … quickly.

1. Be Authentic: Be who you really are. Have an agenda, know why you're there, what you want and need. Be on your best behavior—but always be yourself.

2. Be in the Moment: Please … shut up and listen with your eyes and ears. Ask good questions. Roaming eyes (looking over and around someone) is an instant turnoff. Your task is to understand the other person first.

3. Find a Need and Fill It: Help someone with their child, health, or wealth and you will CLICK quick. Using the paradigm of ONENESS, pretend you're in a contest with the other person to see who can genuinely give, serve and add value first. Always look for the win-win.

4. Follow-up or Be Forgotten: Attention spans are short these days. Following up demonstrates you care and helps build the connection. It also will impress people, because 98% won't do it.

5. Give Credit and Take the Blame: This is especially true when you lead a team. Remember you have a limited amount of time; therefore, quickly rid yourself of toxic people and bloodsuckers—people who drain you of your time, energy, and patience.

6. Make Others Feel Significant and/or Important: Give sincere compliments. Appropriateness is the key, be it the hair, jewelry, suit, tie, remarks, accomplishments, ideas, etc. Remember, insincerity is the highest form of B.S.

7. Don't Be Boring: Talking only about sports, weather, and/or business can be boring. Read! Lead with your passion/purpose. Self-depreciating humor is a great ice breaker. Do not pre-judge people.

8. Have a Great Soundbite: It's like having a hit record. Prepare a short 15-20-second statement that says: A) who you are, B) where you're from, C) what you do, D) how you add value, and E) a quantifiable evaluation of your value. A great soundbite should pique people's interest and give them something substantial from which to establish a connection.

Here is my soundbite:
"Hi, I'm George Fraser from Cleveland, Ohio, by way of Brooklyn, New York. I'm the Founder and CEO of FraserNet, Inc. We are a global leadership network. I write books and speak on networking and building wealth. Over the last 25 years, I've helped over 5,000 people find just the right job and generate over $500 million in new business. It's a pleasure to meet you."

It is 67 words and takes about 20 seconds to deliver. I have several versions of the same soundbite and use them appropriately. Spend quality time writing out your soundbite.

9. Smile Please: You'll attract more people. A gentle smile while standing, listening, and/or talking is infectious. It signals openness, warmth, energy, and interest.

10. Pay Attention to Appearance and Hygiene: Yes … how you look matters. First impressions stick for a long time, so make a great one! Looking and smelling good go perfectly with feeling good and sounding good. It's an unbeatable quartet if you want to be on the team.

Surviving a Visit to the Hospital

At this morning's 10 A.M. meeting of the Hearing Loss Association of America Delray/Boynton Chapter at the South County Civic Center President Oscar Segal presented Part One of a
series of educational presentations aimed at people who are deaf or hard of
hearing titled “The Inherent Dangers of Being Hearing impaired.” This
segment highlighted an important subject, “Surviving in a Hospital Setting.”

For many hard of hearing people, going to the hospital is scary. Not only
are they anxious about their health problems, but they are worried they
won’t hear or misunderstand critically important questions about medications
allergies, and other important physical factors. Giving a wrong answer to a
critical question can be dangerous – even life threatening.

The presentation offered tips and instructions on how to prepare for a
hospital visit, what essential items to bring, what to ask for in the room
and how to ensure clarity of communication between the patient, doctors,
nurses and other hospital personnel.

A Hospital Kit to use around the hospital bed is available at a minimum charge from the Chapter for those deaf or hard of hearing people preparing to enter the hospital for treatment. For further information contact Mrs. Merry Rubinstein at MRubinstei@aol.com or call 738-5630.

Palm Beach County Senior Tennis League crowns 2008 champions

SrTennisLgeLOGO.jpg
The Palm Beach County Senior Tennis League, now in its 22nd year, played its championship round at the Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach on March 24th and March 27th with the top 34 teams competing for this year’s titles.

Callahan III. Also present to answer questions were Project Director Bill Bebeck and Senior Associate Architect Konrad C. Kwok.

Construction began at this facility December 4, 2006. It will more than double the size of the current West Atlantic Ave. branch from 16,500 square feet to 34,000 square feet, and is scheduled to open between late June and mid July this summer. It will contain 213 parking spaces; more than double that of the W. Atlantic branch. 14 spaces are for handicapped parking.

American Orchid Society Celebrates

The American Orchid Society held an open house Monday April 7, 2008 at its visitor’s center and botanical garden at 16700 AOS Lane, off Jog Road, Delray Beach to celebrate 87 years since its founding. Executive Director Jim Jordan and President of the Board Carlos Fighetti gave brief talks to welcome those attending. A cake cutting ceremony was held followed by Garden Tours every 15 minutes until 4 P.M.

PhaleonopsisOrchid.jpg

Ms. Brenda Castle, a Society orchid grower, gave us a personal tour of the hothouse where many species of orchids are grown, identifying the beautiful specimens I photographed . The photo at left is a Phaleonopsis species orchid.

Photo below is a Cattleya species.CattleyaSpecies.jpg

The American Orchid Society was born on April 7, 1921 in Boston, MA. The first step of the newly formed AOS was to compile a list of orchids found and grown in America. Harvard professor Oakes Ames and his wife, Blanche, volunteered for the task. She designed the Society’s official logo that was used for 82 years. In 1949, the AOS had established a Scientific Advisory Board to investigate how it might sponsor orchid research. That year, the first judged orchid show was held in New York City. The Society’s commitment to orchid research is international in scope. To date, the AOS has provided more than $1.1 million in grants and fellowships, supporting students and scientists from all over the world in their studies of such subjects as tissue culture, seed germination, genetics, pest and disease control, fragrance and much more.

The AOS broke ground at the present location for its Visitors Center and Botanical Garden in September 1999. On March 3, 2001, a month shy of its 80th anniversary, the AOS opened its new campus and home in west Delray Beach. This marked the first time in its venerable history the Society would have a facility open to the public. This headquarters is staffed by 33 employees and more than 50 volunteers. More than 250 volunteers serve as officers, trustees and committee members, bringing the organization’s various activities to fruition. This celebration comes during National Orchid Month, disgnated as such by the AOS on its 80th birthday in 2001.

If you want to see nature’s beauty, visit this facility. It is adjacent to the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.

One of their upcoming events at the Orchid Society grounds is a Wine & Jazz evening, April 17. Enjoy a wine tasting while listening to jazz in the gardens from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Delectable hors d’oeuvres will be served. Cost: $15 AOS members, $25 non-AOS members.

The AOS facility and gardens are open daily from 10 am to 4:30 pm. Admissions are $8 for adults and free for children under 12. For more information, call 561-404-2000 or visit www.aos.org.

"Hearing Loss--the Invisible Disability."

OscarSegal.jpg
Oscar Segal, President of the Hearing Loss Association of America, Delray/Boynton Chapter spoke to a group of Kings Point residents at their main clubhouse, Friday April 4 about "Hearing Loss - the Invisible Disability."

Segal pointed out the dangers that hearing impaired people face in everyday situations such as when stopped by law enforcement officers for a traffic violation or communicating to EMT personnel if involved in an accident. Problems also occur when registering for a hospital stay and as a patient in a hospital. Hearing impaired persons must make sure he or she clearly understands questions by medical personnel.

The Delray/Boynton Chapter of HLAA offers a "Hospital Kit" for a nominal fee for hard of hearing people to use if they are facing a hospital stay. This printed material placed over the patient's bed and on the serving cart informs hospital staff to "look directly at patient, speak clearly and slowly as I am hard of hearing."

These kits can be purchased by attending chapter meetings at the South County Civic Center, on Jog Road, Delray Beach on the third Friday of each month at 9:45 A.M. in April and May to finish this season (monthly meetings are September through May). Meetings will resume in September.

HLAA Board Member Merry Rubinstein also addressed the group to tell them about the lip reading classes she gives to chapter members at the Emmanuel Catholic Church, Military Trail, North of Linton Blvd. every Tuesday from 1:30 to 3 P.M. until mid April. These sessions will start again in October.

Segal remained afterwards to respond to questions from the audience after receiving a warm round of applause for his seminar.

South County Mental Health Center Holds Ground Breaking

Joseph S. Speicher, Chief Executive Officer the South County Mental Health Center at 16158 South Military Trail, Delray Beach served as Master of Ceremonies at the ground breaking ceremony, Thursday, April 3 starting at noon.

Joe%20Speicher.jpg
Before an audience of over 100 residents and guests on the campus of the Center Speicher, standing next to a large color rendering of two new cottages, explained each building would have five bedrooms with private baths that would house two in each bedroom, plus a communal kitchen and living room. “The cottages will be built by Bill Handler, President of Woodside Homes, said Speicher. These buildings will be built to the strictest codes of Palm Beach County to withstand our hurricanes.”

Ms.%20Jacqui%20Solodar.jpg
Speicher then introduced Ms. Jacqui Solodar, who has been the driving force raising funds for the two new domiciles. Through her dynamic leadership running a Charity “Mime” Ball at the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach in 2002, and the daily efforts of a dedicated corps of volunteer ladies in the Thrift Shop called “Good as New” in Juno Beach, the funds are now available.

FundRaisingLadies.jpg
Many of the volunteer ladies were bussed down from their homes in Admiral’s Cove, Ballen Isles and Frenchman’s Creek in Jupiter and North Palm Beach areas for the ground breaking ceremony.

Established in 1974, South County Mental Health Center is a private, not-for-profit charitable corporation governed by a Board of Directors who are volunteers from the community. Mr. Seymour Orgel serves as President of the Board, Theodore F. Gerson, M.D., Vice President, Gladys M. Whigham, Secretary and Robert Schulbaum, Treasurer/Chief Financial Officer.

The Center serves more than 5,000 clients annually. An average of 400 individuals initiate requests for emergency and non-emergency services each month. Letter sent to Gov. Crist regarding Medicare Payments

The letter below was sent to Gov. Crist today by the 17 member Palm Beach County delegation of State Representatives in response to information supplied to them by the Alliance of Delray Residential Associations. (For a synopsis of April 2 Alliance of Delray monthly meeting go to www.allianceofdelray.com.)

A similar request is being delivered to Gov. Crist signed by U. S. Congressmen Robert Wexler, Alcee Hastings, Ron Klein and Timothy Mahoney on Monday April 7.

April 2, 2008

Governor Charlie Crist
PL 05 – The Capitol
Tallahassee, FL 32399

Dear Governor Crist:

As you may be aware, the maximum allowable amount of Medicare payments to Medicare Advantage plans in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties are drastically different. In Palm Beach County, MA plans receive on average $233 less per patient than those in Dade County. This disparity results in widely divergent benefits for patients in these neighboring counties.

Examples of disparate benefits include some MA plans paying beneficiaries’ Medicare part B or Part D premiums in Dade, but not Palm Beach. Some MA plans in Dade provide eyeglass and dental benefits which are not available to beneficiaries living in Palm Beach County.

We feel that this situation is unreasonable and unfair to our constituents participating in the Medicare program. For years, the Office of Management and Budget has designated Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties as one single statistical metropolitan area (SMA), showing a high level of regional cooperation and likeness.

It is time that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) designate the tri-county area as a single unit for purposes of Medicare payments to Medicare Advantage plans.

As Governor, you have the ability to petition CMS to change the MA payment from a county-by-county basis to a statewide, metropolitan, or consolidated noncontiguous county basis. In light of the area’s designation as a SMA, we urge you to make such a petition to CMS and help our county’s Medicare beneficiaries receive equivalent benefits.

On behalf of the seventeen members of the Palm Beach County Legislative Delegation, I thank you for your consideration of our request.

Sincerely,

Rep. Mary Brandenburg, Chair
Palm Beach County Legislative Delegation
REP. MARY BRANDENBURG
CHAIR

REP. SHELLEY VANA, VICE-CHAIR.
