Careful of this Phone Fraud

Receiving a Summons for Jury Duty is by U.S. Mail. Some people, however,
have been receiving bogus phone calls from scam artists who want personal
information. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but
some folks who may have discarded or ignored their civic duty, or even citizens
who have recently served on a jury, have become victims of a new fraudulent scam.

Someone claiming to be a jury coordinator, calls you at home to
tell you that you have NOT shown up for jury duty. If you protest that you
never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social
Security number and date of birth, so he or she can "verify the information
and cancel the arrest warrant." If you supply your personal information or
Social Security number, your identity has just been stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois,
Florida, and Colorado . This fraud is particularly insidious because they use intimidation
over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they
are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued
nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

A Good Old Fashioned Shoe Repair Store in West Delray.

Ed%20Jarman%2CShoemaker.jpg
Need new heels, soles, lifts, taps? Right close by at 15073 Jog Road, next door to the recently closed Kings Point Fish Market is Kings Point Shoe Repair where you’ll find 6’ Ed Jarman, 54 year old native Brooklynite repairing, resoling, or stretching men’s and ladies shoes, boots and sandals. He is also equipped to repair handbags, briefcases and luggage. Ed learned his trade by working in his father-in-law’s shoe repair shop in Hallandale in 1980.

Ed’s wife Marion often helps in the store checking work in and out, while Ed mans the various machines in the back, cutting leather, then building a resole and heel job. These folks have lived in Delray for 26 years and have been in this business for 13 years. They have one adult son, Michael.

Ed’s leisure time activities include studying the Bible, and deep sea fishing, but his principal goal is to make a living for his family. He admires people who are honest, generous, considerate and have compassion for others.

Ed lives those traits every day. Twenty years ago he donated a kidney to his sister. She passed away a year ago. His generosity provided her with the gift of life for nearly twenty more years. A person Ed looked up to as a youngster who possessed these traits was his grandfather who became Assistant Highway Commissioner for the City of New York.

If you were wondering whether to repair your favorite shoes, or buy a new pair, visit Ed Jarman’s King’s Point Shoe Repair shop with those shoes in hand. Ed will solve your problem with careful, excellent workmanship. The store is open Monday through Friday 9 AM to 4:30 PM; Saturday 10 AM to 1 PM.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Pastor Promoted

Father Matthew Didoné, age 64, who has served as the Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace Mission at 9600 West Atlantic Avenue in West Delray, was recently promoted to Provincial Superior of the Society of St. Charles Scalabrinians, based in Staten Island,
N. Y.

“Father Matthew,” as he has been affectionately called by the parishioners at Our Lady Queen of Peace since he was first assigned there in 1992, will now supervise the Eastern Region which includes: Colombia, Haiti, Venezuela, Canada, Dominican Republic and the eastern part of the United States from Upstate New York to Florida.

Arriving in America in 1964 at age 20 from Rosa, a small town in the foothills of the Alps 30 miles north of Venice, Italy he attended St. Charles Theological Seminary, Staten Island, N. Y. and was ordained in 1967. He learned to speak, read and write English during his first two years at the seminary. In 1974 he began a ten year assignment that took him to Puerto Rico and Caracas, Venezuela where he learned to speak fluent Spanish.

In 1999 and 2000 for one month each summer he traveled to Belo Horizonte, 150 miles north of Rio de Janeiro on the east coast of Brazil, and the nearby village of Coronel Fabriciano. A cousin there tutored him in Portuguese eight hours a day. In addition he participated in the local cultural and religious customs. This intensive study enabled him to communicate with the members of the Queen of Peace Mission who spoke only Portuguese. Seventy-five per cent of the members of this parish are poor Spanish and Portuguese speaking farm laborers from Central and South America. More than 3,000 families from Pompano Beach to West Palm Beach see the mission as their place of spiritual refuge.

Now this soft-spoken, much beloved priest leaves Delray Beach to greater responsibilities traveling internationally. His heart will always have a warm spot for the people he tended at Queen of Peace. Indeed, his new responsibility area also includes this Mission which began in a Quonset hut building in 1958 and is presently a beautiful, modern church building—a fitting tribute not only to the parishioners but to Father Didoné himself who put in so much effort and energy to oversee its construction. Interestingly, one of his duties will be to recruit a replacement for his position at Our Lady Queen of Peace.

Father Matthew also created the Mission Health Clinic on the church grounds for the migrant workers and their families to receive medical, dental and eye examinations and treatment from volunteers and five full-time staffers who tend to more than 1,500 patients a month. In addition there is a free standing building on the premises which has 10 class rooms where English is taught to the migrant worker families.

Since 1999, members of the Gleneagles Country Club, West Delray Beach established a Mission Clinic Luncheon and an Annual Honorees program. The honorees selected originally were mainly Gleneagles residents, honored for their help raising funds. Seven years ago, surrounding communities were invited to the annual luncheons with the proceeds used to further the growth of the Mission Clinic. The 50th Anniversary luncheon celebrated February 11, 2008 at Gleneagles Country Club attended by almost 400 people, honored two ladies who have served both the young and old migrant parishioners of the Mission directly for many years.

FatherMatthewLadies.jpg
The two honorees, Conchy Arauz, Office Manager at Our Lady Queen of Peace and Minnie (Cortez) Garcia have much in common. Both are bilingual in Spanish and English. (Photo l. to r. Conchy Arauz, Father Didoné and Minnie (Cortez) Garcia.)

Father Didoné has built a legacy of compassion, care and dynamic growth during his 16 year tenure at the West Delray parish. The staff and parishioners look forward to his future occasional business visits to Our Lady Queen of Peace.

Those wishing to reach Our Lady Queen of Peace for information can call (561) 499-6234.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department recognizing hearing impaired

OscarandDepJackson.jpg
Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Jackson held a meeting with Oscar Segal, President of Hearing Loss Association of America Delray/Boynton Chapter recently. Deputy Jackson in response to request from HLAA several months ago told Segal he has prepared a “Roll Call Training” White Paper for the thirteen district Sheriff’s offices informing all deputies the importance of recognizing the special circumstances that exist when a deputy stops a hard of hearing or deaf person and has to communicate with them.

Visor%20Card%20Sample%5B1%5D.jpg
Utilizing existing material from an organization called Center for Hearing Loss Help in Stewartstown, Pa., (Contact: neil@hearinglosshelp.com) hard of hearing citizens can obtain an information card that is placed on the driver’s side sun visor, which quickly informs a deputy they are dealing with a person with a physical impairment and the need for the deputy to be a bit more understanding with a non-responsive driver or a driver who is pointing to the information car on his/her sun visor when stopped by a traffic officer.

The Delray/Boynton Chapter of HLAA meets the third Friday of each month at the South County Civic Center, Jog Road, Delray Beach beginning September 19, 2008. Visit their website at www.hladelrayboynton.org or call (561) 499-9873 for further information.

Move Over!

Drivers are required to "move over" or "slow down" when approaching an authorized emergency vehicle that is stopped on a highway in Florida. The "Move Over Law" became effective July 1, 2002.

The law protects law enforcement officers, emergency workers, firefighters and tow truck drivers stopped along roadways performing their jobs. On interstate highways or other highways with two or more lanes traveling in the direction of the emergency vehicle, and except when otherwise directed by a law enforcement officer, drivers approaching law enforcement or other authorized emergency vehicle parked on a roadway with their emergency lights activated, are required to:
• vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle, as soon as it is safe to do so;
• slow to a speed that is 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit when the posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour or greater; or
• travel at five miles per hour when the posted speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less.

The "Move Over Law" was designed to protect law enforcement and other emergency workers on our highways.

What is the Digital Television Transition?

(This information courtesy of Anne M. Gannon, Tax Collector Palm Beach County)

At midnight on February 17, 2009, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. Digital broadcasting promises to provide a clearer picture and more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders.

Many rumors about the digital television transition exist, including a false story that a new TV must be purchased by the date of this transition. Please read the following to understand how this transition will affect you and your family. Consumers have the following options:

Keep your existing analog TV and purchase a TV converter box. A converter box plugs into your TV and will keep it working after February 17, 2009.
• Connect to cable, satellite or other pay TV service.
• Purchase a television with a digital tuner.

Any TV (analog or digital) will work if it is connected to cable, satellite or other pay TV service. If you use an analog TV and receive broadcasts using an antenna, such as “rabbit ears” or a rooftop antenna, you will need to purchase a converter box.

When TV converter boxes are available, retail stores will set the price. TV converter boxes are expected to cost between $50 and $70. The Federal government permits each U.S. household up to two $40 coupons to help pay for the cost of the converter box. After applying the coupon, participating retailers will charge consumer the remaining balance of between $10 and $30.
Request a coupon at www.dtv2009.gov or by calling 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009). National retailers selling the converter boxes are Best Buy, Circuit City, Kmart, Radio Shack, Sears and Wal-Mart.

Note: Persons with battery-powered TVs for use during power outages (hurricanes): Portable, battery-powered analog TVs may be able to receive over-the-air programming after February 17, 2009 if they have the necessary plugs to allow them to be connected to a digital-to-analog converter box. Because it is not anticipated that battery powered digital-to-analog converter boxes will be produced, an external power source would also be required.

June 19 - September 21, 2008

The invention of the wheel has been considered one of the great milestones in the history of mankind, particularly because of its facilitation of long-distance transportation.

FunnyWheel.jpg
In Japan the wheel has had a different history than it has in other regions of the world. While in the past most travel was on foot, ironically today, Japan dominates world automobile markets.

This exhibition looks at the wheel and wheeled vehicles in Japanese history and examines their impact on Japanese civilization.

Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart Show Production Team films at Vizcaya Community

MilesKahn.jpg
A production team headed by New York TV producer for the Jon Stewart show, Miles Kahn (left) came to Vizcaya with two video photographers, a sound engineer and a production assistant to shoot material for an upcoming Jon Stewart TV program on Comedy Central, Ch. 73.

The popular political satirist sent his crew in to get the opinions of Florida senior citizens towards voting for Barack Obama. The program is aired at 11 PM, Mon., Tues., Wed. and Thurs. evenings with repeat showings the following days at 2 PM and 8 PM.

BA%20Wyatt.jpg
Preliminary interviews were conducted by Kahn with seniors at the Vizcaya clubhouse on Saturday, June 7.

Wyatt Cenac an on-air interviewer for the Stewart team joined the production team Monday, June 9. Vizcaya resident and board member Barbara Zee served (pictured at right with Wyatt Cenac) the production company as hostess for the community.

AllenandWyatt.jpg
Wyatt Cenac's first interview subject was resident Allen Hamlin. Cenac interviewed Hamlin first in the lobby of the Vizcaya clubhouse, then out at poolside facing a sign that read "Restricted Smoking Area." Cenac covered up the word "Smoking" so it read "Restricted Area" playfully teasing Hamlin, who is African American.

WyattplaysMahJong.jpg
Cenac joined a Mah Jong game with three senior ladies late that afternoon, drawing out their opinions of how they feel about voting for the first African American presidential candidate.

3G%27sDiscussionGroup.jpg
Tuesday, June 10th Wyatt Cenac hosted a round table discussion at Three G’s restaurant in West Delray with a group of Alliance of Delray and Vizcaya senior citizens to get their take on the election ramifications of Obama running against John McCain. Some of the participants were: Vizcaya residents Edith Gold, Irene Weiner, Art Gruskin, Florence and Al Hollin, and Alliance of Delray board members Evelyn Spielholz and Harold Kleiner.

We can hardly wait to see how Jon Stewart views Florida seniors when the program airs. As soon as we learn the on-air date of the show we will post it.

Farewell West Atlantic Library

Twenty one years ago in 1987 when we moved to West Delray we immediately became members of the West Atlantic Library off Cumberland Avenue which was just a short drive from home. During all these years we have been ardent users of their selection of books, videotapes and DVD’s. We were fortunate to have the convenience of the library across the street from where we live.

W.Atl.Library.jpg
This Saturday, June 7 at 5 PM the doors on this familiar, friendly institution will close forever--the end of an era that began in January 1978 when this branch opened as a 1,855 sq. ft. facility named the Del Trail Branch. In September 1982 it was expanded to 11,500 sq. ft. and renamed the West Atlantic Avenue Branch. The building was donated to the library System by the developers of Villages of Oriole. In December 1994 a 5,000 sq. ft. building was erected adjacent to the existing facility adding a meeting room and staff area.

Soon a new era begins when the Hagen Ranch Road new library opens on July 11 with larger, brighter space, more books and DVD’s, more computers, more meeting rooms---in a word a greatly improved, larger asset for our community. Now the folks at Emerald Point and Newport Cove will have the library very close to their homes, and we West Atlantic Avenue folks will have to travel a bit further. So be it. We thank Karen Spano, Branch Manager and her staff for all the years of courteous service and look forward to utilizing the new branch with great anticipation.

Wexler Press Conference

Speaking at a press conference at the South County Civic Center, in West Delray Monday afternoon June 2, 2008 U. S. Congressman Robert Wexler will introduce a bill to amend Part C of title XVIII of the Social Security Act to reduce variation in Medicare Advantage payment rates among counties within the same State within very large metropolitan areas.

SchulbaumWexler.jpg
Wexler was introduced by Bob Schulbaum, (seated left in photo) President of the Alliance of Delray Residential Associations who expressed his indignation at the disparity in Medicare Advantage payment rates between Miami Dade residents and Palm Beach County residents. “Presently,” Schulbaum stated, “Miami-Dade Medicare Advantage plan members receive an average of $233 more a month per member than those in Palm Beach County. Next year, the gap jumps to $344.”

Congressman Wexler thanked Schulbaum and the Alliance of Delray for being the tenacious “quarterback” in keeping Congressman Wexler aware of the large difference in benefits. In 2009, Medicare Advantage plans in every other Florida county are getting a 3 or 4 percent raise, but Miami Dade will get a bonanza. Their average payments will rise more than three times, as much as 13 percent, to about $1,238 per member per month. “This disparity is unfair and unwarranted,” stated Wexler. “My proposed bill will attempt to equalize the playing field by making adjustments in the benefits over a 4 year period so at the end of that time the people of Florida will be on an equal footing regarding Medicare Advantage payment rates.”

Alliance of Delray Security Arm Created

Thursday morning, May 29, Alliance Board Director Jack Miles opened the first meeting of a new Home Security Awareness committee comprised of Alliance member communities. Representatives from nineteen communities were present for this inaugural meeting, along with Sheriff's Department District 4 Captain Jeff Calise and key staff members.

JackSheriff.jpg
(Shown in photo l. to r.: Sheriff Dept. Detective Ryan Miller, Lt. Sean Murray, Capt. Jeff Calise and Jack Miles at podium.) The meeting was designed to provide an open exchange of information and opportunity for questions and answers after presentations by Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department District 4 Captain Jeff Calise, Detective Ryan Miller, Lt. Sean Murray, and Mr. Hank Fridette of LinkingCommunities.com, a new website that links communities to law enforcement agencies.

Det.RyanMiller.jpg
The District 4 officers emphasized that citizens should be alert and call 911 if they spot law breaking incidents. (Lt. MIler in photo addressing audience.) As crimes are reported in the district they are recorded at headquarters. Patrols are assigned to the neighborhoods where crimes have been committed. Statistics were reported regarding how many business burglaries, home invasions and robberies, smashed auto windows occurred. All of these crimes occurred usually because people did not lock doors and windows in their homes and cars. Women leaving a purse in plain sight in an auto provide an open invitation to the bad guys to smash a window to snatch it and any other items of value in the car. Because of the worsening economy, people desperate for cash are turning to crime.

At one point, Alliance President Bob Schulbaum asked Captain Calise if had heard anything further about using the soon to be vacated West Atlantic Avenue branch library as a station house for District 4 deputies. Captain Calise responded he had been told that option was off the table—the building was going to be used for storage and as a shipping point for library books, DVD’s and supplies. Schulbaum stated he felt having a Sheriff’s presence in the West Delray area was more important and he was going to press for that to happen with county elected officials.

Captain Calise emphasized to the audience that he wanted them to network with each other. “We don’t have to reinvent the wheel. One community may have a security idea that others can use. Stay in touch with each other, talk about what’s helping to deter crime in your community.

Mr. Hank Fridette, representing LinkingCommunities.com explained a new concept in community connection through the internet. LinkingCommunities.com is a web based site where communities can sign up for their own web site at absolutely no cost. Law enforcement agencies, city and county governments, schools and businesses can link with individual community sites for immediate important information exchange. Call 1-888-222-4446 to reach him to enroll for your communities free website and/or obtain further information.

Jack Miles concluded the meeting by encouraging the audience to communicate with him via email at bojac701@aol.com.
