Dear Friends:
The economic situation of our state is precarious at best, and with foreclosures increasing at an alarming rate, the cost of living increasing, gas prices rising, and health care costs skyrocketing, our communities here are having to deal with problems across the board. With that in mind, here are some tips to help ease the pressure on us all.
Emergency Funds Available for Emergency Housing AssistanceThe State of Florida is now able to dispense funds for emergency housing assistance for our residents. Based on eligibility guidelines for the Emergency Financial Assistance for Housing Program (EFAHP), a household can receive up to $400 to assist with housing costs.
According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, a household must have at least one child or caretaker and must provide proof of the housing emergency (i.e. an eviction notice, etc.) to be eligible for this program.
The program can be used for security deposits for new tenets depending on need. For more information please call the toll free assistance hotline at 1-877-891-6445, or visit http://www.dcf.state.fl.us/homelessness/
Free Legal Counsel for Residents Facing ForeclosuresThe FLASH (Florida Attorneys Saving Homes) program includes more than 10,000 lawyers from across the sunshine state volunteering their time to assist the families of Florida in battling foreclosure of their homes.
To inquire for assistance, a caller will be asked to answer a few initial questions to help streamline the process, and the attorney will proceed to negotiate with the lenders on behalf of the client in order to create a loan that allows the client to remain in the home and avoid foreclosure free-of-charge. The toll-free hotline for the FLASH program is 1-866-607-2187.
Telephone Cost Savings Program Available for FloridiansThe Florida Lifeline Assistance and Link-up Florida telephone savings programs provided by the Florida Public Service Commission and the Office of the Florida Public Counsel, offers assistance in covering costs of phone service. To qualify for the program, your household income must not exceed 125% of the federal poverty income level, and/or a member of your household must be utilizing Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Food Stamps, or the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Program. For more information please call the toll-free hotline at 1-800-540-7039.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff if you have any questions or concerns. Our district office number is (561) 470-6593.
All the best,
Kelly Skidmore

Message from Anne Gannon, Tax Collector:
Why is the TRIM (Truth in Millage) Notice Important?
Most people ignore the TRIM (Truth in Millage) notice, not realizing its significance. The TRIM Notice is important because it identifies the deadline and instructions for filing a challenge to your proposed property taxes.
The Property Appraiser sends property owners a TRIM Notice that explains any proposed changes in the millage rate of each taxing authority and informs property owners of their property’s assessed value. TRIM Notices will be mailed to property owners on August 22, 2008.
If you feel the assessment is incorrect or missing an exemption and you have not been able to resolve the issue with the Property Appraiser’s Office, you may file a petition to challenge the proposed assessment with the Value Adjustment Board (VAB). The deadline to appeal property assessments to the VAB is September 15, 2008. This is also the deadline to appeal to the VAB for late applications of exemptions and Agricultural classifications. For more information call the Property Appraiser’s Office at 561-355-6289.
