Local Food Charities Seeking Donations
Over the last year, the demand for donations by food charities that work to feed needy residents has increased by nearly 50%. At the present time, the South Florida area food banks are desperately seeking donations of non-perishable food items such as canned fruits, vegetables, beans, chili, tuna, dried pasta, juice, water, cereal, rice or monetary donation.
For more information or to locate a food bank in your area, please call (954) 537-0211 or visit http://www.irissoft.com/fcfcb.

Health Tip of the Week
Regular weight training does more than just build better muscles; it builds a stronger, healthier body. Several new studies confirm the benefits of mild-to-moderate resistance training, including reduced blood pressure and improved cardiovascular health.
Weight training is also believed to improve the way the body processes sugar, which could reduce the risk of developing diabetes. Another study from the Oregon Health & Science University examined the effects of weight training on Osteoarthritis. This study and others confirm that exercise of any kind improves strength and the ability to perform activities of daily living among older adults that suffer from the disease.
However, remember to consult your physician or medical professional before making any changes to your healthcare regimen.
As always, I appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you. Please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff if you have any questions or concerns. Our district office number is (561) 470-6593.
All the best,

Kelly Skidmore

Citizen’s Police Academy, Thursday August 21, 6:30-9:30 PM

District 6 Sheriff’s Captain Martin Bechtel hosted the second session of the Citizen’s Academy at District 6 Headquarters, Jog road, Boynton Beach. It was an evening packed with information and demonstrations by the brave deputies who protect us every day.

First speaker was Bomb & Arson Squad Detective William Atkinson. Assisting him was Deputy Udell. Det. Atkinson explained the intensive training they go such as 150 hours to be certified for hazardous material handling. The group then went outside for demonstrations of the department’s robot and the safety equipment they wear when on a bomb investigation. Next demonstration was given by Sheriff’s Deputy Beth Goldweber who is assigned to traffic patrol in her cruiser. She showed how tickets are printed out right in her cruiser; how she can access records on the computer and how she uses her radar gun to clock speeders.

The final event of the evening was a demonstration of K-9 dogs and their handlers. K-9 Deputy Luis Ledbetter of the K-9 Unit stated that there about 50 dogs in the program. All were German Shepard’s, except for the 3 bloodhounds in the unit. All the Shepards are imported from overseas at a cost of 7 to $9,000. All dogs are male, with one exception. Each dog and deputy goes through 480 hours of training. It takes about one year to train the dog and his deputy handler. Each dog has one handler with whom he stays for his entire lifetime. The dogs have a 12 to 13 year life span and work for about 7 years. At the end of a dog’s tour they have a value of between $8,500 to $100,000, dependant on the work they have done such as explosives, narcotics.

Economic Situation Tips from State Rep. Kelly Skidmore

Dear Friends:
The economic situation of our state is precarious at best, and with foreclosures increasing at an alarming rate, the cost of living increasing, gas prices rising, and health care costs skyrocketing, our communities here are having to deal with problems across the board. With that in mind, here are some tips to help ease the pressure on us all.

Emergency Funds Available for Emergency Housing AssistanceThe State of Florida is now able to dispense funds for emergency housing assistance for our residents. Based on eligibility guidelines for the Emergency Financial Assistance for Housing Program (EFAHP), a household can receive up to $400 to assist with housing costs.
According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, a household must have at least one child or caretaker and must provide proof of the housing emergency (i.e. an eviction notice, etc.) to be eligible for this program.
The program can be used for security deposits for new tenets depending on need. For more information please call the toll free assistance hotline at 1-877-891-6445, or visit http://www.dcf.state.fl.us/homelessness/

Free Legal Counsel for Residents Facing ForeclosuresThe FLASH (Florida Attorneys Saving Homes) program includes more than 10,000 lawyers from across the sunshine state volunteering their time to assist the families of Florida in battling foreclosure of their homes.
To inquire for assistance, a caller will be asked to answer a few initial questions to help streamline the process, and the attorney will proceed to negotiate with the lenders on behalf of the client in order to create a loan that allows the client to remain in the home and avoid foreclosure free-of-charge. The toll-free hotline for the FLASH program is 1-866-607-2187.

Telephone Cost Savings Program Available for FloridiansThe Florida Lifeline Assistance and Link-up Florida telephone savings programs provided by the Florida Public Service Commission and the Office of the Florida Public Counsel, offers assistance in covering costs of phone service. To qualify for the program, your household income must not exceed 125% of the federal poverty income level, and/or a member of your household must be utilizing Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Food Stamps, or the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Program. For more information please call the toll-free hotline at 1-800-540-7039.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff if you have any questions or concerns.  Our district office number is (561) 470-6593.
All the best,

Kelly Skidmore

Message from Anne Gannon, Tax Collector:

Why is the TRIM (Truth in Millage) Notice Important?
Most people ignore the TRIM (Truth in Millage) notice, not realizing its significance. The TRIM Notice is important because it identifies the deadline and instructions for filing a challenge to your proposed property taxes.
The Property Appraiser sends property owners a TRIM Notice that explains any proposed changes in the millage rate of each taxing authority and informs property owners of their property’s assessed value. TRIM Notices will be mailed to property owners on August 22, 2008.
If you feel the assessment is incorrect or missing an exemption and you have not been able to resolve the issue with the Property Appraiser’s Office, you may file a petition to challenge the proposed assessment with the Value Adjustment Board (VAB). The deadline to appeal property assessments to the VAB is September 15, 2008. This is also the deadline to appeal to the VAB for late applications of exemptions and Agricultural classifications. For more information call the Property Appraiser’s Office at 561-355-6289.

Health Tip of the Week from State Rep. Kelly Skidmore

Depression is a very serious condition that affects millions of Americans every year. With all of the problems and issues facing our communities today, rates of depression in our families is increasing at an alarming rate. To help avoid depression, here are some tips to keep you upbeat and in good spirits.
• Discuss your situation and problems with a family member or a friend whom you can trust.
• Set specific times aside to recuperate and dedicate that time to nothing but simply relaxation. This can be as simple as reading a book or taking a walk around the block.
• Take some time to exercise, even if just briefly, at least once a day.
• Although many may turn to alcohol or smoking to get their minds off their problems, the long-run consequences far outweigh any short-term benefits that they may provide. Make every attempt to avoid these two things as much as possible.
• Take up a personal hobby and set no deadlines in order to help you unwind and consume unused time with a useful or enjoyable activity.
Keeping a positive outlook on life is important to us all. So by keeping these tips on hand, you can help keep your mind clear, your body healthy, and your life a little bit brighter.
As always, I appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you. Please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff if you have any questions or concerns. Our district office number is (561) 470-6593.
