Explore Historic Palm Beach at the Breakers

breaKERS%20-%20Copy.jpgThe Breakers in Palm Beach would make an excellent "staycation" at any time of the year. These photos show holiday time in which symbols of different traditions can be found throughout the hotel, all decoratively and structurally fitting in with the Renaissance flavor of the grand hotel.

There are magnificent ballrooms with marble floors and gold gilded ceilings. The Gold Room has a myriad portraits of nobles and other personalities of antiquity.

The Hotel was built between 1925 and 1926, The United States Department of the Interior placed The Breakers on the National Registry of Historic Places, so this says it all.

Visit for a day, a weekend, or longer. This is a must-see site especially at holiday time.

Ribbon Cutting and Artwork Unveiling at Worthing Park this Thursday

The City of Delray Beach, the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), Worthing Place, the DeBilzan Gallery and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Worthing Park, 150 East Atlantic Avenue, at 5:45 pm on Thursday, December 22, 2011.

During the ribbon cutting ceremony, members of the City of Delray Beach Commission and staff will lead the ribbon cutting ceremony and unveil an original art sculpture created by William DeBilzan, a local artist, which will serve as the centerpiece to the park. Immediately following the ribbon cutting, the DeBilzan Gallery will host the public and provide hors d'oeuvres and meet William DeBilzan.

This downtown project, which began in mid-October 2011, re-designed the park to promote activity in this previously passive and underutilized park, which was first constructed in 1968 and named after long-time City Clerk R.D. Worthing. The new design creates a more passive "recreation-friendly" green space to meet the needs of visitors to the City's downtown core and provides adjacent retail spaces within Worthing Place with the opportunity to create outdoor cafés.

Urban Underground Hosts Reggae Music this Weekend at the Arts Garage

Arts Garage of Delray Beach announces its second installment of Urban Underground, the newest and fastest growing series to hit the stage. On Saturday, December 3, 2011, Urban Underground will host reggae musician and composer Adam "Teacha" Barnes for a journey through roots reggae toward social awareness.

The Urban Underground Series bridges the cultural divide within Delray Beach, as well as South Florida. In efforts to do such, the venue hosts performers who are gaining notoriety for their talent and consciously evolving the public perception of urban music. The Urban Underground brings street sounds to the stage, with an artist who has been singing praise for the Jamaican culture 25 years.

Teacha Barnes' passion for reggae was instilled upon introduction. After his initial awakening to the art, he purchased a PA system and started working as a DJ. He spun for parties and crowds, performed with Ellis Island and Rhythm Nation, and emceed on Drum and Bass rhythms at raves and clubs. He grew in popularity and standing, creating a performance all his own, complete with traditional beats and modern reflections. His songs have been featured on two Reggae Legends albums, on the track list next to Steel Pulse, Gregory Isacs, Toots and other internationally respected groups and artists. Teacha Barnes will be backed by the Vanguard Brass band and audiences can expect an evening of strong vocals and rock steady beats.

Arts Garage Presents Solo Art Exhibition & Pianist this Weekend

A Solo Art Exhibition featuring Aida Tejada - Nov 18 @ 7:30 pm
Inner Reflections – the opening night reception for a Solo Art Exhibition featuring the work of Aida Tejada. Mounted in collaboration with Alliance Française. “Sometimes, your everyday life is esthetically transformed… When common objects are presented in a new perspective, they awake feelings ranging from euphoria to depression and from serenity to restlessness. The images in this project are everyday objects that cross my gaze at home and elsewhere. Objects that are often abandoned, ignored or taken for granted. The city images are common buildings in ordinary streets. To achieve the desired effect, I create textures and artful compositions with daylight, my camera’s movements, and different reflecting surfaces.” Aida Tejada, Inner Reflections.
The Jace Vek Experience – The Power of the Piano - Reborn - Nov 19 @ 8pm
A unique and original vision of brand new music from Emmy-Award winning composer, concert pianist and recording artist Jace Vek. Blurring boundaries of age and culture, The Jace Vek Experience allows the audience an intimate and candid look into the creation of Jace’s music, what inspires him, and his attitude towards the creation of his phenomenal musical productions for piano, symphony orchestra and modern electronica. " When I am making music and sharing it, it is a reflection of something which is a pure instinct . Wherever I am, whether it is standing on an ocean shore, or in a line at a supermarket deli waiting for my number to be called - I hear music in my head. It’s not something I can "turn on", or "turn off" it is simply there - And as such, sometimes it feels like I can hardly take credit for it; because it just happens.” - Jace Vek

Communities of Baby Boomers Love Elvis

collageelvis%20-%20webCopy.jpgRecently I attended a fantastic show at the west Delray Vizcaya Community’s beautiful clubhouse. Local talent Scott Ringersen brought his Elvis Experience to the stage performing to a full house. Mr. Ringersen presented a full hour and a half show packed with Elvis songs from the King’s early leather jacket days to the ‘70’s jumpsuit era.

In the near future, shows such as this Elvis tribute and other tribute performers and bands such as the Beatles, Stones, and Eagles are surely to be expected on the entertainment schedules of our 55+ Baby Boomer communities.

The photo on the left shows Scott Ringersen performing his "Sounds Of..." show where he sings songs of Sinatra, Martin, and artists of the '60's and '70's in a trendy local nightspot. He is also pictured in one of his many Elvis '70's jumpsuits.

About the City of Delray Beach Centennial
From 1895 to 1898, the area west of the Intracoastal Waterway (called the "Canal" by settlers) was known as the Town of Linton. This was changed to the Town of Delray, named after the hometown of some of the early settlers, with the hope that the name "Delray" would inspire a new beginning of prosperity and growth.
On September 4, 1911, a public meeting was held at the Ladies Improvement Association Hall for the purpose of discussing the incorporation of the Town of Delray. An election was held on October 9, 1911, resulting in 56 of 57 votes (one abstained) in favor of incorporation. In the early 1920s, the Town Council changed the name from the Town of Delray to the City of Delray. In 1923 the land east of the Intracoastal Waterway was incorporated as Delray Beach and in 1927 the City of Delray and Delray Beach merged to form the City of Delray Beach.

Jackfruit: A Tropical Summertime Treat

Jackfruit%20Monkey%20Bread%20-%20WEB%20Copy.JPGJackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. It is believed indigenous to the rainforests of the Western Ghats, a mountain range along the western side of India. In 1782, jackfruit plants from a captured French ship destined for Martinique were taken to Jamaica by the British Navy, where the tree is now common. About 100 years later, the jackfruit made its appearance in Florida.

Jackfruit is moderately large to very large, weighing from 10 to 60 pounds. The pulp of the opened fruit smells of pineapple and banana and has a flavor similar to Juicyfruit gum.

Look for this fruit at local specialty and ethnic markets. The taste will be a delightful experience.

The American Orchid Society Botanical Garden has been located adjacent to the Morikami Museum and Garden for the past ten years. It's address is 16700 American Orchid Society Lane and is easily accessible off of Jog Road.

Thousands of orchids can be viewed on the grounds and within the main building, and large greenhouse (see photo on the left where local resident Donna Lerner demonstrates one of the many orchid displays in the main greenhouse). In addition to magnificent orchid specimens at the American Orchid Society's Headquarters, there are ten "Garden Treasures" which are distinctly numbered and marked in the Garden. Elwood will be remembered by many area residents as the businessman and personality that brought terrific entertainment to the Avenue in Delray Beach. Here is a vintage photo of Thursday night with a crowd of fans watching Scott Ringersen with his “Elvis Experience” Show. Fun on the Avenue: Delray Elvis Performs Ceremony for Local Couple

Friends and relatives gathered at local Johnnie Browns on Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach to witness a “commitment ceremony" for Arlene Grossman and Joseph Freeman, a local couple. Officiating was our very own "Delray Elvis" Scott Ringersen. Scott Ringersen, retired Delray Beach policeman, has a voice which spans several octaves and can perform early Elvis hits and the “jumpsuit Las Vegas years” hits.

Scott is a notary public and is also available for marriage ceremonies where he can perform the marriage and sing during the ceremony.

ROYAL WEDDING CELEBRATION AT LOCAL BRITISH PUB

The Blue Anchor British Pub located on Atlantic Avenue was the place to be seen in Delray Beach on the royal couple's wedding day. At 4:30 AM an English breakfast was being served and the celebrations began and continued throughout the day and into the night with British invasion rock music. The Blue Anchor is an authentic piece of British history built in the mid-1800's in the heart of London's law court district and brought across the "big pond" to Delray Beach in the last century. Below is a photo of Lee Harrison, owner and host of the pub/restaurant displaying the congratulatory banner and decorations in honor of "Wills and Kate." The right photo shows the entrance doors to the pub that were well known to Winston Churchill as a young Fleet Street journalist and Member of Parliament in the early 1900's.

Here's a beautiful Valentine's Day story from one of the students in my Creative Writing
Class at Kings Point. Doris Brown has been a student of mine since 2002. Her poignant memories that she read in class today make a perfect Valentine's Day salute to all of us.
M.M.

For me Valentine’s Day has many memories. I remember when I was in 4th grade we exchanged valentines in school. I still remember the valentine I received from one of the boys in our class. It came in a box and there was a metal spring on the valentine. The message was "in the spring a young man's fancy turns to love". I had a crush on this young man and I never forgot that valentine.

Now I am a grandmother of ll grandchildren and a widow after having been married to the love of my life for 60 years. My husband always gave me messages of love on Valentines Day. Now that I'm a single person I get many messages of love from my children and grandchildren.

My life is very different as a single person. I miss the love and companionship I had with my beloved husband. Something seems to be missing in all holidays but I have had to find some way to make my life productive again.

I am a person of today and tomorrow and also a person of yesterday. My past travels with me and that is what makes what I am today. This allows me to celebrate each day, be it Valentine’s Day or any other holiday.

“Uncle Willy” entertains the children

“Uncle Willy” entertains the children at
Sandpiper Shores Elementary School, Boca Raton

UncleWillieandrabbitpuppet300dpi.jpg
Professional entertainer Willy Mercier recently did a two-a-day at Sandpiper Shores Elementary School. First he performed for 80 Pre-K to 2nd grade children from 2:00 to 3 PM, then a second show from 3:15 to 4:15 for thirty-five 3d, 4th and 5th grade students.

The children screamed with delight as “Uncle Willy” performed magic tricks, played the keyboard and chatted with his puppet friends.

His array of large puppets included a boy puppet named “Eddie,” an alligator, a dog and a large rabbit. Conversations with his puppets stressed how the youngsters should behave. “Be nice to each other,” one puppet says. “It’s cool to be polite,” says another. “Say ‘Excuse me’ or ‘pardon me’ when the occasion demands. Don’t bully other kids, don’t call people names, and don’t use words like ugly.”

Uncle Willy singled out a youngster named John and brought him on stage. “It’s John’s birthday today,” he shouted. Everyone joined in a loud chorus of “Happy Birthday.”
Uncle Willy had John assist him with magic tricks. He handed John a rigid baton, and it collapsed like it was on a string. Everyone screamed. John was then given a fan that Uncle Willy said he bought on his trip to China last year. When John took the brilliantly hand painted open fan from Uncle Willy it fell apart, looking like useless scraps of paper, generating more laughter. Mercier then demonstrated how to pour water from an empty pitcher into a glass, amazing the young audience with that magic feat.

“I tell the kids they can do anything in life they dream about if they work at it,” said Mercier. I also tell them “If you make a mistake, admit it and apologize.”

At the conclusion of each session he had some of the children share the stage with him. He placed funny hats on their heads and had them dance while he played a Hawaiian hula rhythm on the keyboard. Joyous laughter bounced off the walls of the combination lunchroom/auditorium at Sandpiper Shores.

Mercier is married to his wife Poppi for 34 years. They live near the water in Boca Raton where he loves to sail and fish. He is busy creating material for a CD of stories and original music.

Swing & Jazz Preservation Society Nov. 6 Concert Enjoyed by All

The Society conducted a free concert for the public at the South County Civic Center, Jog Road, Delray Beach this past Friday from 2 to 3 PM. The Sid Parker Quintet and vocalists Roberta De Muro and Steve Leeds provided vocal accompaniment. Under the leadership of Sid Parker playing tenor sax, the group included Johnny Amoroso, trumpet (and vocal on a community sing "Lulu's Back in Town"), Cotton Kent, keyboard; Al Greenstein, bass; and Joe Belanger, drums. The group put on a loose, fun-filled show, designed to be a taste of the good music available during the six show season of the Society that begins November 17.

An audience of more than 350 from Boca Raton, Delray and Boynton, mostly seniors, enjoyed the classic popular songs from the 40's and 50's. De Muro and Leeds did a duet on "Makin' Whoopee" a popular tune made famous in the '30's by Eddie Cantor that would make Eddie proud. The quintet featuring solo turns by Parker and Amoroso began the concert with "Take the A Train,"and moved on from there through a program that included "Girl from Ipanema" and concluded with everyone singing "God Bless America" in a salute to victims of the tragic events of November 5 at Camp Hood, Texas.

The first Swing & Jazz Preservation Society concert of the new season features the Johnny Amoroso Sextet, Tuesday evening, November 17 at 7:30 PM. Johnny plays trumpet and sings some of the material made famous when he played with Tommy Dorsey as a young man.

All monthly concerts of the Society take place at the Spanish River Performing Arts Center, 2400 Yamato Road, corner of St. Andrews Blvd., Boca Raton, the third Tuesday of each month through April 20, 2010. Ticket information call ( 561) 499-9976. Access their website at:

Celebrate July 4th at Sunset Cove Amphitheater

The bigger and better Second Annual July 4th Celebration will take place on Saturday night, July 4th at the Sunset Cove Amphitheater in South County Regional Park.

Festivities start at 6:30 with a live dance band. There will be vendors on site same as last year, but this year you can bring your own picnic basket too.

The new road extension connecting the Amphitheater with Coconut Cove Waterpark will be open for this event, which will substantially reduce traffic congestion. This means that those in North Boca Raton can get to the Amphitheater directly from the park entrances on Yamato and Cain Boulevard rather than going all the way around to the Glades entrance.

Please note the road extension will otherwise not open until this fall.

This work provides him the opportunity to serve as a role model to youngsters.

“When it comes to role models, I remember my 4th grade teacher in the parochial school I attended in Detroit, Ms. Oulette. She was an outstanding lay teacher who taught us the importance of being responsible and disciplined that has benefited me throughout my lifetime.”

Tom is devoutly religious since “I accepted the Lord into my life in 1988 while on a retreat.” He enjoys traveling and outdoor activities like camping, canoeing, hiking. His favorite books are by C. S. Lewis and those about political history. When his children were younger they all enjoyed the first Star-Wars movie.

“Honest, trustworthy and good-natured people make up my cadre of friends,” says Mr. Tom. “I look forward to meeting lots of new friends through my Super Science Club demonstrations. Come on down and join us for educational fun.”

The invention of the wheel has been considered one of the great milestones in the history of mankind, particularly because of its facilitation of long-distance transportation.

In Japan the wheel has had a different history than it has in other regions of the world. While in the past most travel was on foot, ironically today, Japan dominates world automobile markets.

This exhibition looks at the wheel and wheeled vehicles in Japanese history and examines their impact on Japanese civilization.

Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart Show Production Team films at Vizcaya Community

MilesKahn.jpg
A production team headed by New York TV producer for the Jon Stewart show, Miles Kahn (left) came to Vizcaya with two video photographers, a sound engineer and a production assistant to shoot material for an upcoming Jon Stewart TV program on Comedy Central, Ch. 73.

The popular political satirist sent his crew in to get the opinions of Florida senior citizens towards voting for Barack Obama. The program is aired at 11 PM, Mon., Tues., Wed. and Thurs. evenings with repeat showings the following days at 2 PM and 8 PM.

BA%20Wyatt.jpg
Preliminary interviews were conducted by Kahn with seniors at the Vizcaya clubhouse on Saturday, June 7.

Wyatt Cenac an on-air interviewer for the Stewart team joined the production team Monday, June 9. Vizcaya resident and board member Barbara Zee served (pictured at right with Wyatt Cenac) the production company as hostess for the community.

AllenandWyatt.jpg
Wyatt Cenac's first interview subject was resident Allen Hamlin. Cenac interviewed Hamlin first in the lobby of the Vizcaya clubhouse, then out at poolside facing a sign that read "Restricted Smoking Area." Cenac covered up the word "Smoking" so it read "Restricted Area" playfully teasing Hamlin, who is African American.

WyattplaysMahJong.jpg
Cenac joined a Mah Jong game with three senior ladies late that afternoon, drawing out their opinions of how they feel about voting for the first African American presidential candidate.

3G%27sDiscussionGroup.jpg
Tuesday, June 10th Wyatt Cenac hosted a round table discussion at Three G’s restaurant in West Delray with a group of Alliance of Delray and Vizcaya senior citizens to get their take on the election ramifications of Obama running against John McCain. Some of the participants were: Vizcaya residents Edith Gold, Irene Weiner, Art Gruskin, Florence and Al Hollin, and Alliance of Delray board members Evelyn Spielholz and Harold Kleiner.

We can hardly wait to see how Jon Stewart views Florida seniors when the program airs. As soon as we learn the on-air date of the show we will post it.

Movie Review: “Michael Clayton”

I don’t usually do movie reviews, but my widower 88 year young brother-in-law Charlie saw this movie twice—once in the theater and a second time at home a few days ago when he rented the DVD from Blockbuster.

“How come you wanted to see it a second time,” I asked.
“I didn’t really understand what it was all about when I saw it in the theater,” he replied. “Maybe I slept through part of it, so I figured I’d give it another try at home.”
“You understand it any better the second time?” I asked him.
“It’s a very confusing movie,” he said. “You take the DVD and watch it, then explain it to me. Make sure you get it back to Blockbuster on time, though.”

The Mrs. and I watched it on a recent Sunday night. “Here’s my take on this flick, Charlie:”

The opening segments are all in that fast, multi frame business they use in Hollywood these days that hurts your eyes. George Clooney stars as Michael Clayton. He’s a lawyer working for a large law firm in New York City. Instead of trying cases he is the company trouble shooter who the bosses assign to clean up problems for clients.

We meet his young son who’s around 10 years old. We meet Clooney’s brothers—one a cop the other a deadbeat. We meet his associate and good friend, Arthur, who is working a high profile case for the firm fighting a class action suit by over 400 people against one of their biggest and most profitable clients. These folks claim that using the client’s insecticide, has caused cancer.

And we also meet three horses on a hill in Westchester County, N. Y., when Clooney spots them, gets out of his car, climbs the hill and stands in front of the three horses for about two minutes. They stare at each other. The three horses must represent some metaphoric symbol to someone in Hollywood, but I couldn’t figure out their purpose. Suddenly two explosions go off in Clooney’s car and the horses get spooked and gallop off. Clooney runs back to his car which is being burned beyond recognition. He throws his wallet and wrist watch in the vehicle and runs away. This helps him “disappear” while he searches for the reason and the perpetrator who killed his friend Arthur in an earlier scene.

The last third of the movie is more understandable than the initial footage. I don’t want to give anymore away and spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet.

“Charlie, do you understand it better now?” I’m leaving for Blockbuster.

Delray Villas “Guys & Dolls” Choral Group Entertains

Guys%26DollsChorusRehearsal.jpg
Mel Goldstein, the Director of the volunteer 34 member “Guys & Dolls” Choral Group rehearses every Tuesday morning at Delray Villas Clubhouse B. They recently performed at Majestic Isles in Boynton Beach, and local nursing homes. After performing at Manor Care, Yamato Road in Boca Raton on February 18, they have been invited back for a return engagement on March 24.

Goldstein, besides leading the group, is a soloist singing high tenor. Selma Moskowitz, soprano is the main female soloist, with other women performing solos dependant on the number being sung.

“We have 13 male tenor and bass voices in our chorus. I consider these men the finest male singers in the area. Many of them do solo turns at our concerts,” says leader Goldstein. “We have a vast library of music we use for our performances, from Broadway show tunes like Camelot, to Irving Berlin.”

Guys%26Dolls%20MusicDirectorMelGoldstein.jpg
Goldstein, 68, a big six footer, moved from Lindenhurst, L. I. to Delray Villas four and a half years ago. He was instrumental in restarting the choral group which had been dormant for a few years.

For 40 years he volunteered as a fireman and EMT on Long Island. He and his wife Lynn raised a son and daughter and have one grandchild. His son, daughter in law, their daughter and grandson are all professional singers. Goldstein's one regret was not becoming a Cantor.

“Working with the Delray Villas guys and gals talented singers has been a joy,” says Goldstein. With each rehearsal and live performance we improve our artistry. If any organization would like to book our group, call me at 561-381-0131.”

Del Lago Creates Dramatic Showcases for Trails Chapter BUNWC

Randolph Del Lago, Creative Director of the Delray Beach Playhouse has created showcases of well-know playwrights, stage actors and actresses for the Trails Chapter of the Brandeis University National Women’s Committee for the past ten seasons. www.bunwctrails.org He usually creates three or four segments, the last one being a musical tribute to the subject honoree, spread over a three month period between January and March each season.

Del Lago does extensive research, writes the scripts and engages a troupe of four players to do the reading to sell-out audiences. In past seasons he has provided retrospect’s on the lives of Lillian Hellman, Arthur Miller, George S. Kaufman, Somerset Maugham, and Fanny Brice, to name a few. In recent years neighboring chapters of BUNWC in Boca Raton and Boynton Beach have subscribed to his popular showcases.

Subscriptions are so popular two performances had to be scheduled: Thursday and Friday, January 17 and 18. The performances began at 2 P.M. to a full house each afternoon in the 400 seat Temple Emeth sanctuary off West Atlantic Ave., Delray.

Randolph’s introductory monologue described the early life of playwright/novelist Edna Ferber who was born August 15, 1885 in Kalamazoo, MI. At age 15 in Appleton, WI. she became the first female newspaper reporter. Her family had moved from Ottumwa, IL. where they had been subjected to humiliating anti-Semitism. Ferber nurtured smoldering indignation about discrimination from that early experience. The stories she wrote were often about strong women facing down adversity. In the mid 1920’s Ferber was the most popular female novelist in the country with novels such as “So Big,” “Cimarron,” “Giant,” and “Saratoga Trunk.” Many of her works were made into films and theatrical productions.

DeLagoTroupe.jpg
To dramatize scenes from Ferber’s plays, Del Lago introduced four actors who read roles from selected plays. Shown in photograph: Heidi Harris, Randolph Del Lago, Harriet Oser, Lourelene Snediker and Wayne Le Gette. They gave excellent performances.

HenriettaWarhoftig.jpg
Before the program began a special member of the audience was serenaded by everyone with “Happy Birthday To You.” Henrietta Warhoftig, (shown in photo) seated in the front row was celebrating her recent 100th birthday.

December 18, 2007 Swing & Jazz Preservation Society Concert:

Duffy%26Drums.jpg
Duffy Jackson and Damian put on a great evening’s entertainment at the Spanish River Performing Arts Center, Yamato Road, corner of St. Andrews Boulevard, Boca Raton.
This was the second in a series of concerts presented by the organization the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 P.M. through April 2008.

Duffy Jackson, the irrepressible drummer/scat singer and his six talented sidemen: Alex Norris, trumpet; Mike Gold on alto sax, clarinet and flute; Tom Mitchell, tenor sax; Rick Doll, bass; Dolph Castellano, piano and Dante Luciani, trombone contributed impressive solo stints driven by the frenetic pace of Duffy on the drums—each without a note of sheet music in front of them.

Lester Leaps In got the evening off to a rousing start, followed by a sweet rendition of Rose Room. Solo passages by Dante Luciani on trombone and Alex Norris on trumpet on a beautiful old favorite, Polka Dots and Moonbeams was followed by Mike Gold with a clarinet solo on Stardust. Pianist Dolph Castellano played No Greater Love. Count Basie classic Jumpin’ at the Woodside showcased leader Jackson on his drums to conclude the first half of the evening’s concert.

Born and raised in jazz, Duffy has been performing since the age of four when his father, the late legendary jazz bassist, Chubby Jackson gave him his first set of drums. Jackson, Sr. played with the Woody Herman orchestra during the 40’s. Duffy at age 18 was touring the country with Lena Horne; at 20 with Sammy Davis, Jr. Since then he played with big name bands led by Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Lionel Hampton and Illinois Jacquet and worked with jazz legends Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstine, Stan Getz, Buddy Rich and Harry “Sweets” Edison.

Damian.jpg
Damian, singer/comedian, well known by S & J regular concert goers, took over the second half of the show, singing many great favorites such as The Song is You, From this Moment On, You and the Night and the Music and a comedic spoof of Night and Day. In between songs, he regaled the audience with fresh and timely down to earth comedy.

Swing & Jazz Preservation Society Goes Latin with Season Opening Concert

Anselmo.jpg
The 16 piece Latin Jazz “Orquesta Nostalgia” led by Anselmo Vidal, Jr. produced a grand opening for the ninth season of the Society at the Spanish River Performing Arts Center, Boca Raton Tuesday evening November 20.

Playing a wide variety of Cuban/Puerto Rican standards from the late 1950 heydays of Tito Puente’s band, and utilizing many of the arrangements of that group, the audience applauded and cheered their appreciation for the verve and drive exhibited in their repertoire beginning with the first set opening number Mama Guela and continuing to Donde Estabas Tu which closed out the first half of the concert.

Lead vocalist Dennis Rivera helped produce the true Latin flavor of the evening with his superb singing. Leader, Vidal, Jr., Ramon Aponte and Willie Suarez provided the back up chorus to Rivera.

Eddy%26LisaRodriguez.jpg
While most of the instrumentalists are long time experienced sidemen, youth graced each end of the stage. Young marrieds Eddy and Lisa Rodriguez and Daniela Vega and Christian Tabois provided graceful, sensuous dancing to the accompaniment of many of the numbers.

The second half of the program included familiar standards Tea for Two Cha Cha and Mambo with Me from the movie “Mambo King.”

A rousing finish to the exciting musical evening was Cochise providing stellar performances by the young dancers and solo instrumental turns by Marty Fried on sax; Al Lilianstein on trombone; Willie Suarez on bass guitar; Arty Azenza on piano. Throughout the evening, the percussion artistry of Joe Glavez on Timbales, Joe T. on bongo drum, Milt Rodriguez on Congo drum and Anselmo Vidal, Jr. on the small Timbales pushed the band forward with a driving beat.

The next concert in the series takes place Tuesday December 18, starring singer/comedian Damian and featuring showman Duffy Jackson on drums and his 7 piece instrumental group playing traditional jazz. For reservation information call (561) 499-9976.

Swing & Jazz Preservation Society Opens Season Tues. Nov. 20

The Swing & Jazz Society’s opening season concert begins next Tuesday evening, November 20, 2007 at the Spanish River Performing Art Center, 2400 Yamato Road, corner of St. Andrews Blvd., Boca Raton.

Anselmo Vidal, Jr. leads his 16 piece Latin jazz band playing rumba, mambo and cha-cha music. From the moment Anselmo kicks off the beat you’ll know you’re in for a lively, toe tapping evening. An extra treat: Two couples will demonstrate Latin dances.

Anselmo arrived in New York City from Aquadilla, Puerto Rico with his parents when he was 9 years old. He attended Metropolitan High School in the city. During these formative years he honed his talents as a Latin percussion musician, playing drums, timbale’s (bongo drums) and timbalito’s (small timbale’s).

The Tito Puente band inspired Anselmo to some day form a band that played exciting Latin music that included Mambo, Cha-Cha, Bolero and Meringue.

In 1992 Anselmo and his wife Miriam moved to south Florida. In 2003 with the help of a New York musician, Carlos Castillo who transcribed arrangements, Anslemo was able to realize his life long dream, putting together his 16 piece “Orquesta Nostalgia” with the help of Willie Suarez, bassist; Joe Tumminello, percussion; Jack Bragin, and Dr. Tim Walters, trumpet players. Among the other key musicians in the band are Jimmy Sedler, lead trumpeter; Marty Freed, sax; and lead vocalist, Dennis Rivera.

Anselmo, at 72 years young demonstrates his tall talent even though he only stands 5’ 2” and is slightly built at 130 pounds, by leading the band, playing the music he loves and slapping out the rhythm on his timbale’s and timbalito’s.

“Putting this big band together is a labor of love,” states Anselmo. “I look for musicians that have a passion for playing Latin music and who are dedicated to the same strong work ethic that I have for the success of the band by playing lively Latin music most people enjoy.”

For ticket information call (561) 499-9976, or purchase at box office the evening of the concert at the Arts Center.
