It wasn't easy being Greenies

The Greenies class-action suit has reached a settlement, reports Business Week. The company, whose distinctive chlorophyll-colored treats were reported to have cause intestinal blockages in some dogs that did not properly chew them, have since reformulated the wildly popular chewies.

The initiators of the lawsuit were the owners of Burt, a rescued Dachshund who allegedly died after ingesting one of the treats.

After having snatched these treats out of the mouths of my dogs because of how the treat was breaking apart, I am glad that the manufacturers are taking care of business (not that I will ever buy them again). Personally I would prefer to have them removed from the shelves.

I don't care if they have been reformulated or not. I would be very uneasy giving these to any of my dogs again even though they loved Greenies.

as a professional risk assessor I can say, an abundance of caution (e.g., watching your dog while they consume otherwise-healthy treats, to make sure their behavior doesn't put them at risk) improves safety but an excess of caution (not giving them at all because someone else's dog choked or blocked on one) is suffocating and counterproductive. My guys get Greenies (1/2 a Teenie for each of my apx 22-lb dogs) and they get watched, just as they would for any chewable and they also get watched while they eat their meals whether it is kibble or raw meaty bones.

It was owner negligence, not product defect, that resulted in the problems with the old Greenies formulation. The benefit is the new formulation definitely is tastier, the dogs prefer it, and it is easier to chew -- but dogs who tend to gulp should still be monitored or should'nt have them. The down side is that there are people who are convinced there is something wrong with Greenies, and there never has been. Too bad for the dogs.

I am sure my dogs are not saying WE WANT GREENIES.
This product and so many like it are not worth the risk. Bad press? Usually there is something behind the rumors, esp. that many.
JMHO

I agree with you, Mila. It's not worth the risk.
Especially when one of my dogs is an aggressive chewer to start with. If a chunk came off the greenie, she would just swallow it whole. And yes, I do supervise my dogs with their toys or treats.

O.K. it is now my turn to ask for some help. I work for AT&T in the heart of Dallas (busy streets). A female cat decided to have a litter of kittens (5 in all) in one of our parking structures. The guards were able to catch 2 last Fri. and have gotten homes for them. With the help of traps, we have caught mommy and one of the babies this morning. We almost had a 2nd baby, but it got away. We are sure we will have the other 2 babies by end of day as they are very hungry. They are about 6 - 8 weeks old and just the guttiest things alive. We have called around and all of the rescues/shelters are full (what's new) and I was wondering if anyone knew of anyone or anyplace we could contact to help us. I have 4 cats at home and the other lady working with me has 5, so we can't take any more. I am looking for help here.

So Pam A., yours is the type of dog that shouldn't have them, and it takes knowing your individual dog's risks, rather than the overall risk, to make that decision. But to say they should be off the shelves altogether, or that they specifically are bad, is wrong. I certainly don't want you, or someone else, making that decision for me based on rumors -- which is what the majority of posters here seem to be basing their personal decisions on.

All I'm saying is that for me, they are not worth the risk. To use them or not is up to each individual pet owner.

I killed over 30 of my goldfish yesterday. I left the water running in my small backyard pond and it added too much chlorine I guess. I am just sick over it. They were so beautiful and would come up to the edge when I walked up knowing I had come to feed them. No one understands how bad I feel to have done something so stupid. I had them for over two years and there were new babies also. I feel like I have lost friends. They weren't just fish to me. The bad thing is it was my fault.

I am so very sorry, Kay. Nothing anyone can say will take away your pain, but please know we all care.

Kay, I'm sorry for what happened to you. I know how you feel a little. It is a devastating blow. For me it was angelfish in my aquarium. It was an accident but still my fault. They also would recognize me and come to the top to get fed if I was near the tank. You could almost stick a finger in the water to pet them.

Kay - my daughter lost all her Koi the same way. She had them 3 years and all were named. It was so sad to gather them out of the pond. We actually buried them all together. Keep the faith, Kay, we know a lot of how you are feeling.

Thanks for all your kind words. I still feel so guilty for what I did. My husband wanted to go right away and get me some more, but I told him it would not be the same ones I saw everyday and knew each color. I may get more later but only after we fix the small leak that caused the water to get low in the first place and after the water has set for a while to get rid of the chlorine. All I need right now is to put more in and kill them too. Thanks.

I just heard Illinois shut down horse slaughter for good. let's celebrate. Yeah.

KAY--Sorry for your loss over the fishes.
We all are very tendered hearts about the animals!
Even Vivi did captured us all from the beginning, that was how we got "together" over the blog. Right now it isn't the same but still....
God is in control over EVERYTHING that we alone can't see that God can sees.

You're right, Paula...I had a friend tell me once that we "humans" are like the back side of a quilt. We see all the loose thread, the unravelling material, knots and stitches hanging down - not making much sense - perhaps to some, an ugly mess ....from above, God sees the beautifully crafted top of the quilt, where corners meet, colors flow and there is a beautiful connective pattern which comes together, with much effort, to form something lasting and miraculous....it's not until we see the top of the quilt, the total picture, that we'll ever understand how it works together....but God knows, and sees the beauty...he's the master "seamstress".

Monkeybones - your comment is ridiculous. Your "it hasn't happened to me and i know blahdiblahblah so it won't happen, so everyone else must be using it incorrectly" is arrogant and stupid.

Considering all of the people that are still alive and smoke cigarettes, is it safe to assume by your rationale that those that have died from them must have been using it incorrectly? You call yourself a "risk assessor"? i call you foolish and naive.

Pam,
I witcha gal! Why take a chance. I wouldn't like to have to reach down the throat of my dog and yank soemthing out......ewwwwwww...Better safe than sorry!
(o:

Vivi needs some candles to be lit for her as does Madison, who's candle site has run out...say a prayer for your own pet or a friends pet or even, haaaaa, a human...(Madison, no offense, you've been "ours" for a long time little human!)

Beautiful words, Michael. Kay, so sorry to hear about your babies. You are a very caring person and stop blaming yourself for their deaths. You took great care of them for over 2 years and this was a horrible accident. My friend has a similar fish pond and lost many one day to predaters because the net shield she used slipped. Fish, frogs, etc. are not easy to take care of and are fragile.
I am happy to read that Ill has shut down horse slaughter. We did it!!

BELIEVE IN HAPPY ENDINGS:

Hi all,

I haven't posted to the site in a while. I check back from time to time, just wondering about the latest on Vivi, Madison, etc.

Well, I read a story in today's Chicago Trib that I thought I would share, as it brought tears to my eyes and rekindled my belief in happy endings ...

Dog returned to 'speechless' Chicago panhandler
Pet had been missing since Sept. 7
By Gerry Smith

Tribune staff reporter

11:38 PM CDT, September 22, 2007

For two weeks, Tom Finley was in a daze, holding fliers with a photo of his friend and asking passersby in the Loop if they had seen a blond husky/terrier mix with a limp.

"It was hard to sleep," he said. "Hard to eat."

On Saturday, the well-known panhandler received a gift no amount of loose change could replace when he was reunited with Reba, who had been missing since Finley, 69, left the 12-year-old dog outside a McDonald's at South Franklin Street and West Jackson Boulevard on Sept. 7.

"I'm speechless," Finley said during a press conference at the Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago, where Reba strained on the leash and barked at photographers.

Since Reba disappeared, Finley had received an outpouring of support from the public. Office workers printed up fliers of the missing dog and a woman gave Finley a prepaid cell phone to field calls in the search. He said he received "hundreds" of calls from people claiming to have seen Reba.

"Some would call and say they'd spotted her or they had her," he said. "Sometimes I thought I heard her myself."

Finley believed Reba was taken by someone who thought he couldn't care for her. Officials at the Anti-Cruelty Society would not identify the woman who had returned Reba.

"She was in tears," said Nadine Walmsley, an official with the Anti-Cruelty Society. "She just handed us the dog. We honored our part. No questions asked."

Finley said he already forgave the woman, if she had been the one who had taken Reba.

"I thank her from the bottom of my heart," he said.

The Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago will offer the 30-pound canine a lifetime of free veterinary care, starting with an appointment on Tuesday, Walmsley said.

"Reba's an older dog and she's got some real issues," Walmsley said. "We're going to find out what the problems are and try to address them the best we can."

Finley, who has been homeless before, has been living in a studio apartment on the North Side for about four months, he said, scraping together the $550 rent with monthly Social Security checks.

The reward fund for Reba's return, set two weeks ago at $500, has grown through donations to an undisclosed amount, Walmsley said. The woman who returned the dog would not accept the reward, and so it will be given to Finley, Walmsley said.

But as he crouched down to let Reba lick his face, Finley declined to put a price on his friend's return.

"I'd be lost without her," he said. "She's the best thing that's ever happened to me."

After a news conference, Finley and Reba were ushered into an elevator. They were going to celebrate over a meal, Finley said:

"We're going to have a great buffet."

Hope this brightens your day,

Gail

Oh Gail, what a sweet, sweet story. Thank you for posting this. I am crying over happiness with the reuniting of this man.

You know, we often think because someone does not have an endless supply of money to help a pet or other animals, their effort is not important. But the endless time these people gave to locate this dog and this man's love would probably be enough for Reba for a lifetime, but now to know they will have a home, some extra money, and vet care is even more special.

As we have always said, God does work in such mysterious ways. He certainly did helping Finley and Reba....

GAIL, thanks for reminding me to post the latest update from Gina on Madison. http://www.princessmadison.org

----------------------
September 16

How strange....I could have sworn I typed up an update when John and Madison got home. Maybe I had it all planned out in my head. Who knows. OK let me remember what I had typed or thought I typed. LOL
Madison and John arrived home safe and sound. The boys and I met them at the airport to welcome them back to the states. They had some delays so we ended up anxiously awaiting their arrival. But, it was so good to see them when they got home. Things just aren't the same with them away.

We are currently having to make some hard decisions regarding Madison's recovery. The doctor in Amsterdam was very very positive about Madison and her potential. He feels strongly that she can improve with gentle stimulation to what she has left in her brain. We have been seeing Dr. Talamantez every day during the week and following his instructions (which are also coming from Dr. Carrick.) The biggest thing he wants us to do right now is the cross crawl pattern. We do this by laying Madison on her back and moving her arms and legs like she is crawling. Yes, she is doing this passively because she can't do it herself, but this exercise accesses both sides of her brain and do some important things in her brain. We are to do this for 10 minutes, wait an hour and then repeat. We do this throughout the day.

I took Madison to therapy with her PT, OT and ST and explained what the doctor wanted us to do. I also explained that he wants us to back off a bit on some of the highly stimulating things because the chirpractic neurologists feel that she's not quite ready for it. They follow her heartrate and look for subtle cues such as clenching her hands to make sure that her brain is not getting too much at once. She was getting overstimulated on some simple exercises that he was performing, so based on that he felt that some of the spinning and standing exercises were too much right now. He wanted to talk to the therapists and make a team to help Madison. Long story short, the therapists have a very different philosophy and are taught in a different way. They do not agree with each other. One of the therapists had an open mind and researched online to try to understand better, but the others were not willing to even talk to the doctor. So, I have a dilemma. I love Madison's therapists and they have been with her from the beginning. They have brought her to where she is today and I am very thankful for that. However, the neurologist backed everything up with neurology and science so I trust what he is saying. After a trip to therapy, I felt very uncomfortable and decided not to go back right now. John and I have been talking and we feel therapy is important too and we'd like to incorporate it into what we are doing with Talamantez. I don't know....there are some great places for therapy. Maybe it's just time to make a new start . I can understand how they would be defensive. I really can. But, I truly love them and I just wish they would understand that I only want to do everything I can for Madison. I just wish we could do this together. I do not want to go somewhere else. But, I have to do what is best for Madison. If that means finding another place who will work with us and incorporatewhat we are doing with Madison then that's what I'll have to do.

Madison is doing well in school, going half day. She seems to be really happy when she is there. She is continuing to be more alert, making more eye contact and looking around more. We are very proud of her. She's such a fighter! Anyway, I've rambled on long enough. I'm typing blindly now because there is an error in the web window and it's not showing me what I'm typing. Lord I hope I'm not making a bunch of mistakes! LOL OK so until next time, B+ for Madison!

PS the rest of the pictures of Amsterdam will be up soon!

Kathleen, your update on Madison brings back memories of a family in Philly who we knew whose little boy had a brain injury. I was 9 or 10 yrs. old at the time. They used patterning as an important part of the therapy and teams of volunteers from the community would come in at different times of the day, everyday, and move his limbs, head in certain patterns for a specific time frame. I know because my mother was a volunteer on one of these teams for a few years. Nathan recovered almost completely and there was a big party when the patterning table was retired. This could be an important key to Madison's recovery. It does work as I witnessed this with Nathan, my friend's little brother.
Reba's story is wonderful and shows that you can never give up and that there are many caring people out there. Nothing wrong with prying someone's guilty conscience. It worked. That's why keeping flyers out there does get results at some point. And Finley has a place to live and help for both him and Reba. What an uplifting story.

Susan - I am going to copy your post and send to Gina. That will make her feel so good about this new therapy they are pursuing from the doctor in Amsterdam. Thanks for the info.

Your welcome, Kathleen. I only wish my mother was still alive so I could ask her about her volunteering. Nathan was about Madison's age when they started. I don't remember the details of his injury since I was only about 9 but I did go sometimes with my mother to their home when that team did the patterning. The simple manipulating of both sides of his body in a coordinated way did work.

ROM KATHY (CO) - THE HORSES STILL NEED US TO KEEP CAVEL CLOSED!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE, IT TAKES ONLY A FEW MINUTES TO HELP -
Everyone --- I know this is long, but please take a moment to read and then call, fax or email----we are almost there.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend celebrating the great news about Cavel. We’ve all been waiting a long time for this! Hopefully, this will be the end of slaughtering horses on American soil. However, this makes it all the more important that we get the federal legislation passed that will stop the transportation of our horses to Canada and Mexico. It will also erase the possibility of another plant opening up in this country.

Thanks to everyone who rallied to participate in the poll. This information gathering will help our legislators know how best to proceed. It will also help in compiling Daily Call Lists. Since many senators were receiving duplicate calls, this project will be completed by the state leaders. You all did an awesome job and now we can concentrate on Daily Calling Lists to encourage those senators that we KNOW we can reach with enough support. Remember, we don’t need them all……so let’s get back to our regular calls and get enough senators to get this passed!!

TODAY'S STRATEGY WITH TALKING POINTS

1. Let your Senators know that two of the slaughter houses in this country are closed permanently, and the third (Cavel) has lost their appeal and will be closed shortly. It is URGENT that we now get this legislation passed to STOP THE TRANSPORT of horses to Canada and Mexico. It's VERY important that you stress the cruel and inhumane way these horses are transported. Now is the time to focus on the fact that closing down our slaughter houses is NOT enough but that we must pass this FEDERAL legislation to stop the transport of American horses for slaughter.

2. Let your Senators know that we NEED them as co-sponsors for S311 to get this on the calendar and to the floor for a vote.

3. Tell your Congressman that we need their cosponsorship for HR503 to get this bill out of committee and to the floor for a vote.

4. Dispel the "unwanted" horse theory. Read John Holland's information for more talking points.

5. Closing of all three slaughter houses in the United States helps to reinforce our efforts. We can now dispell the idea that American jobs will be lost due to the end of slaughter. Only Mexico and Canada will now profit from OUR horses being slaughtered!! This is a very important point and one that you should all make when talking to your legislators.

Remember….WE ARE BARBARO’S VOICE, LET IT BE HEARD!

Thanks for all you do.

DARLENE - Thank you for posting this for Kathy and the rest of us.

I have to speak from my heart about what I have been feeling today. I hope everyone will understand this is something very heavy on my heart right now, and you are my soul mates with animals so you will understand.

All weekend long I have been trying to find the joy of being happy about Cavel closing (hopefully for good). Seems they are closed from the postings of a lady who has gone by there twice today.

But I cannot find peace or joy for so many reasons. The first reason being we were told of two truckloads of horses at Cavel when the decision was made. They had the weekend to close and stop slaughtering it appears through the injunction deadline. Some of the rescue people tried very hard to purchase these last two truckloads of horses to save these babies' lives. But these "evil, evil demons" would not stop until they slaughtered everything in sight. As far as I have heard, none of these horses were allowed to be rescued. The lady who drove by there today said their meat semi trailer was there, and there were black trash bags sitting out. The thought this was probably these last babies we could not save has had me so upset I cannot stop crying.

The second reason being I know now these "evil, evil demons" will be shipping these babies to Canada and Mexico under such inhumane conditions and for probably even more inhumane means of slaughter. This too takes away my joy over defeating Cavel.

So Darlene, now you understand why it means so much to all of us who are fighting to end this to see the postings to end all of this once and for all.

My friends in animals, if you have NEVER contacted your Senators and Congressmen before, PLEASE contact them now and put pressure on them to stop this once and for all with HR503 and S311 bills.

Thank you for allowing me to bring my heart to all of you on this blog.

I so agree with every word you said Kathleen.

Thank you Kay. I know how heavy your heart has also been this weekend. I hope you are feeling better today. Wish we were close, we could get together and have some of that 'nilla vodka a certain person has told me about and cry together!

Time to run away from animals for a while I fear. Don't think I can take any more for a while!

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 'HOLY IS HE!"

Matthew 5:7
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Good morning Daddy God. We pray to you for the strength of our rescuers. Daddy God, hearts are hurting, tears are flowing and we need your strength. The evil that we face each day with people who do not care about your creation is unbearable. We ask you to strengthen and encourage each weary heart. We ask you to hold and comfort each mourning and sorrowful heart and we ask you to raise up the tired and weary. We need you to be very close to each one of us. You are our strength and our shelter. Hold us. Please shine your light very brightly on Vivi. You have taken such good care of her and we thank you with all of our hearts. Please shine on her and bring her home. We need her Daddy God. Please bring her to us. Continue to shelter and provide for her. Bring home Bowdee and Conan, Hopey and all the others we have brought to your throne. We ask you to heal precious Patches Daddy God. Let your Glory of healing and provision flow. Bring your presence into this situation and all that is needed into this family. Continue your precious healing in Madison. Give her parents your wisdom and lead them in the right direction as they face a cross road in her healing. Tell her we all love her and that she is very special to us. Give my beloved CoCoa a gentle kiss from me. Whisper in her ear that I love her and I will see her soon. Close Cavel for good Daddy God and stop the transportation of our beloved horses. Comfort the lady who returned Reba. She obviously loves her. Perhaps you could set it up so she may visit? In Jesus's Name, we praise and honor you and you alone!!!!

Kathleen - I agree with what you said. Sometimes it just gets too overwhelming. Take a break, get rejuvenated, but please come back. I'm sure you will. :)

Thank you Michael and Betty for the beautiful prayer. I know it is working to make all of us stronger because I feel much better this morning myself. As I prayed last night, I felt God reminded me "not to cry over these horses gone before." They are now happy and whole with Him. Man cannot destroy anything that God cannot make whole and well again for eternity. Somehow I feel this last bunch will be there in a group when I cross that bridge someday, and I will get to hug and kiss each and every one of them then. Hey, maybe with my new "non-arthritic body" I will even get to ride some of these beautiful guys too! Those evil people may have been able to keep the rescuers away from those horses on Friday, but they sure "could not keep God's spirit from being right there with them all." We must worry about those remaining here on this Earth and their lives rather than those who have gone to be with God.

Pam, thank you for understanding my heart so well. I know your heart feels the same - I can always sense it in your writings. I took a good friend of mine from college out to dinner last night (she laughingly calls me her "adopted mommy"). We had a marvelous dinner at my favorite restaurant. I have gotten to know the owner very well, and may be doing a website for his restaurant soon. Deirdre and I told him the happy news about Cavel being closed (he knows my animal causes), and he did the sweetest thing. When we got ready to leave, he sent my bill with a "zero" balance on it along with two pieces of his wonderful homemade carrot cake for Deirdre and I. On the bottom he had written, "Thanks for the love in your heart for God's creatures. So glad we are friends." Needless to say I cried like a baby over his kindness and friendship. He would not even allow me to leave a tip. His daughter had waited on us and said she would not take a tip.

So folks, there are people out there who love animals just like we do. They even promised me they would start asking their customers to call the Senators and Congressmen and promote HR503 and S311. God knew my heart was heavy and sad, and He could not have provided warmth and comfort in any other better way than last night - good food, good friends, and good hugs!

SUSSEX, Va. (AP) - Michael Vick and three co-defendants were indicted by a grand jury Tuesday on state charges related to a dogfighting ring operated on Vick's Virginia property.

The grand jury passed on indicting the Atlanta Falcons quarterback and two of co-defendants on eight counts of animal cruelty, which would have exposed them to as many as 40 years in prison if convicted.

Vick, who already pleaded guilty in federal court to a dogfighting conspiracy charge and is awaiting sentencing on Dec. 10, was indicted for beating or killing or causing dogs to fight other dogs and engaging in or promoting dogfighting.

The grand jury met for more than three hours.

The charges are the first leveled against Vick in the county where he built a home on 15 acres that was the base of the dogfighting operation.

Surry County Commonwealth's Attorney Gerald G. Poindexter asked that the four be arraigned Oct. 3 and requested that each be released on a $50,000 personal recognizance bond. None of the defendants nor their lawyers were in court.

Kathleen, the owner of the restaurant and his daughter sound like wonderful and caring people. How lucky you are to have them in your town. You added more people to help the horses. That's great!

You are so right Susan. I AM very lucky to have these nice people in our town. Ike is an African-American gentleman who is an incredible chef (and his wife and daughter also). They started this restaurant with the best of fresh food (from steaks, to seafood, to vegetarian, etc.) cooked and seasoned just right (and healthy also).

He is just the nicest gentleman, and is always so wonderful and gracious to his patrons. It is a small little place in Midtown that has earned a wonderful reputation and the ultimate of respect by everyone. He has also become famous for his "sweet potato fries" served with honey mustard dressing and his mashed sweet potatoes. Try it sometime, they are great!

Kathleen, I though of you and Tinkerbell when I read this story. Acording to what the ADA said Tinkerbell is a service dog.

Vick tested positive for marijuana.

Kay - That is such an interesting article. Thank you for posting this. This is so odd because Tinkerbell was doing basically the same thing. She was right in my face and pawing at me to wake me up. This lady needs to stand her rights and tell them, "I will be more than happy to call the police myself. YOU are breaking the laws." If she has papers to certify that this baby is her service dog, they CANNOT refuse her anywhere. Even in our hospital of very strict health regulations, service dogs have to be welcomed with open arms.

I had an interesting experience on Monday. One of our patients who happens to also have CP was here. His parents had purchased a lab puppy they wanted trained to be his service dog. So I got this call from the Social Worker saying, "Hey, you are our dog person, I need some help." She told me the situation, and I started searching on the internet and calling until I found a group in this area that can hook them up with training for this lab at no cost. I really enjoyed helping with this as I was amazed how many opportunities there are out there for people in need to get service dogs and be trained. If you know anyone who could have a better life with a service dog, please suggest this to them. It was good for me to learn about this as someday I might even need one if I become wheelchair bound from my arthritis. In the meantime, I have my sweet little Tinkerbell watching over me always.

jonathon, cigarettes are inherently harmful when used exactly as intended. This is based on a huge body of data that shows the risk of many chronic diseases is increased by smoking. In every individual, localized paralysis of the body's defense against inhaled particles, and chemical constituents (including addictive nicotine) of smoke enter the bloodstream of everyone who smokes and many who are passively exposed. Nevertheless, many people who don't smoke and aren't passively exposed do develop heart disease, lung cancer, throat cancer, and many who do smoke live to a crusty old age. Science struggles to find the factors that cause cancer and other illnesses to develop in one individual but not in another. The health headlines are rife with stories of studies that "suggest" factors and connections, but none are well documented.

In the case of greenies, the risk is immediate rather than long-term, and it occurs in a small proportion of dogs who are probably readily identified by observation -- it is their behavior that puts them at risk, not the product per se, because other products (and non-products, in case you've never had the pleasure of observing or hearing about a dog blocking on an ingested sock, thong, or section of landscape material) also can be gulped and cause blockage, and a fair number of dogs block and bloat on regular dry dog food. I guess you could argue that if cigarettes existed but were never smoked the risk could go way down, too.

My dogs don't need Greenies, but they do like them and they have consumed them safely for several years, both the old variety that tended to swell more, and the new formulation that doesn't. My original post was in response to the people who appeared to think the product was inherently bad -- which, unlike cigarettes, it is not.

Hi again,

I'd like to post a prayer request, for those who are so inclined ...

I was saddened to hear that Reba, the dog I posted about above, has a cancerous tumor on her spleen. I hate to think this poor man would get her back only to lose her to cancer. The dog's owner has chosen to have Reba have a risky surgery to remove the tumor. Please pray that she comes through the surgery OK.

I will keep an eye on the news and hopefully they will let us know the results of the surgery and I will post the outcome. Let's hope this is still a happy ending.

Thanks,

Gail

That is so sad. Please let us know if you hear anything. I will be praying.

Kathleen, in that same paper there was an article that said came from the ADA. Stores can only ask if its a service dog and what kind. They can not ask for certification. If the person says its a service dog for whatever they have the store cannot question it or they are violating the law. They also said the dog does not have to be certified if it performs a service for that person.

I feel so bad about Reba. I pray her surgery goes smoothly and she recovers. We do need some good news. Where is everybody?

The Vivi Sighting section isn't coming up this morning. Is there any news? Like you, Rooooby, I didn't get much sleep last night thinking about Miss Vivi.

Here is a safety cross-post from an agility list. (It is not my story) Since it takes them 3 years to recall a crib after the first death we are on our own with pet products, I'm assuming:

I know many agility competitors use the twist/fold crates sold at Target. I had a very scary situation with one last weekend and wanted to share the experience. It involved only the size small crate by Boots & Barkley.

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref3Dbr_1_4/601-5196655-5645713?ie3D
UTF8&frombrowse3D1&asin3DB000M4GSW8

I purchased this crate and set it up in our living room because my dogs like to relax in crates. The small size has a black strap, which I guess is supposed to be a handle. (although I think it's functionally useless as a handle!) My dog Kiwi got in the crate and her head got caught in the black strap handle loop which hangs in front of the entrance doorway. She panicked and rolled around, twisting around and around while the handle tightened around her neck.

I was gone competing at a trial with my other dogs and my husband was fixing the car. He found her some time later, barely breathing and disoriented. The handle was wrapped seven times around her neck, cutting off her air. Luckily, he was able to free her and Kiwi has no long term damage.

As soon as I got home, I took scissors to the handle and cut it off, and I've told my friends who have this crate to do the same. I've sent a letter to Target and hopefully they'll respond.

Just wanted to warn everyone to be careful,
Elizabeth

KAREN: Wow! Glad Elizabeth's husband was at home and did saved Kiwi.
Nowadays too many problems and recalls already.
The world has gone insane already.
(Sorry I had to reread the story just to be sure it wasn't you but Elizabeth's.)
I was so glad the dog is fine with no damages.

SUSAN L.: I think alot about Vivi now that the fall is here once again....will not be looking forward to the winter....so when will we know of the updatings on Vivi yet???
Like you said: where's everybody??
My answer: I guess everybody's too busy now and maybe they knew there's no new post about Vivi.

Paula, did you read about the Vivi sighting on Wed. night. A person named D claims to have seen her by the toll road a mile from Darlene's house. The toll people were alerted and hopefully Vivi is seen on their video cameras. D said that she came out of the marshes and D is sure it was Vivi. I can't bring up the Vivi sighting posts so I don't know what's going on. Darlene was going out there last night and others too. I'm praying this is the time for that miracle.

Susan: go to Recent Comments on the side of Greenie thread and click on anyones post about Vivi sighting and it will bring you to that thread.

Thank you, Margot.

SUSAN L.: Hmmmm, I must missing something about Vivi's sighting Wednesday night? I haven't seen the post? So where or which post should I go to? Thanks!
I really am hoping that it is Vivi in the video camera where the tolls are.

...OK, I did saw the other post about the possible sighting of Vivi now I see what's going on.
PLEASE HEAVENLY FATHER, BRING VIVI BACK OUT IN THE PUBLIC AND RESCUING HER!
OK FOLKS:I do have some good news, I just delayed long enough to posting the news.
On September 14th, my sister who lives in MIchigan, have a male cat name is "Charlie" had rans away. But last night I got my personal email from my sister letting me know the amazing news: CHARLIE HAS BEEN FOUND ALIVE AND WELL! He's home now. How did he found, well, all he did was just lay on the porch waiting for Janie coming home from work at 7:30 p.m.last night. Janie drove up and got out and then walked up to the door stopped and was in shocked to see Charlie lay there waiting! He's in a good health, skinny but fine. (I do hope from now on Janie better keeps him inside the house since he had his front claws removed when a kitten)
It has happened twice, first time it was in June then this month. NO MORE OUTSIDE FOR CHARLIE!!
I thought I'd sharing some good news! :-)

A Whale of a tale for all..... This is marvelous...I just wanted to pass it along... God Bless all of you and GOD BLESS, VIVI......

The Whale.....

If you read the front page story of the SF Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines.

She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farralone Islands (outside the Golden Gate ) and radioed an environmental group for help.

Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her ..

A very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.

When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed gently around --- she thanked them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.

The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

May you, and all those you love,
be so blessed and fortunate ...
to be surrounded by people
who will help you get untangled
from the things that are binding you.

And, may you always know the joy
of giving and receiving gratitude.

I pass this on to you, in the same spirit.
