Rachael Ray finds four-legged market

How do dogs say “delish”? Inspired by the home-cooked meals she makes for her pit bull Isaboo, ubiquitous celeb chef Rachael Ray is launching a Nutrish for Pets line of dog food. (A kitty version is in the works.)

All proceeds of the sales are slated for her Rachael’s Rescue group. Among the slated recipients: Spirit, a terrier-mix who made the news recently when he was brutally beaten at the U.S.-Mexico border. Her Web site, rachaelsrescue.org also features recipes that can be shared with your pooch, including Pumpkin Barley with Turkey and Oatmeal with 'Nanas and PB.

Looked into the ingredients since this is "Inspired by the homecooked meals she makes..."

Not too bad... but what type of animal fat? Is it whatever is on sale? Roadkill? Other dogs? Or is it chicken fat? I get very skeptical when ingredients are not specific.

Also, the Corn Meal, Soybean Meal, and Corn Gluten Meal are fillers that make this food seem... um... unappetizing. If they were lower on the list it would be better but there seems to be more filler than veggies.

Ingredients
Rachael Ray Nutrish Chicken and Veggies
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Meal, Soybean Meal, Animal Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Corn Gluten Meal, Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Dried Beet Pulp, Natural Flavor, Dicalcium Phosphate, Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Dehydrated Alfalfa, Dried Peas, Dried Tomatoes, Dried Carrots, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Olive Oil, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Iron Oxide, Dried Parsley, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (Source of Vitamin C), Mixed Tocopherols, Niacin, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin A Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K activity), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Sulfate, Folic Acid

To each his own though.

Hmm..,no better than any other super market food. Says no fillers. Well there are a few. And don't get me started on soy anything. I'll stick with Evo.

Didn't mention it before, but we feed Solid Gold and Wellness. Used to feed Innova, but Evo wasn't around when we were.

Good question about the animal fat. From what animal? Rendered shelter euthanizations? I'll stick to Evo and Abady myself. Her food has waaay too much cr*p in it like corn and soy. Nope. Not for my babies.Rachael Ray needs to do better than this. Would she eat it?

Like many before her, They create a name for themselfs and then feel the right to SLAP it on any product out there. I am sure it's all about money.
She needs to stick to 30mn meals of the two legged kind!

Nice article written by Denise to keep Vivi up front in the media. Thanks Denise. ************************

Vivi: A Pet Detective’s Toughest Case
Pet detective Karen Goin shares her experience in the search for a missing show dog in New York.
Denise Flaim

Karin Goin of Goin’s Pet Detectives Inc. (www.petdetectivesinc.com) can sum up her most memorable case with one four-letter word: Vivi.

“She comes up every time I talk to a reporter or do a TV interview,” says Goin, referring to the champion Whippet who made headlines when she escaped her crate at John F. Kennedy International Airport after competing at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York. “It was my first big media case, and I learned a lot.”

Responding to pleas from Vivi searchers, Goin had to pass up a request to search for B.B. King’s lost dog in Houston, and drove three days to New York. Like Vivi, Goin was overwhelmed by the city’s fast pace and whooshing traffic. While searching for Vivi during a rainstorm, two of Goin’s detective dogs were shocked by electrical current transmitted through manhole covers. When her dogs tracked Vivi outside of the airport, some diehard volunteers that had all but camped there for more than two weeks initially refused to believe her dogs’ indications that Vivi was on the move 15 miles to the north. Psychics weighed in, as they do in about 80 percent of Goin’s cases. And the search -- which ended unsuccessfully, as Goin had to return back west to meet previous commitments -- earned her the very few pieces of hate mail she has ever received.

Goin hears occasionally from the Vivi searchers, who continue to track the elusive Whippet all around the borough of Queens, keeping awareness up with posters and fliers. “There are lots of dogs in Vivi’s situation -- she exemplifies the roaming dog, the dog at large,” Goin says. And she is one of only a handful of missing dogs that Goin has never gained closure on -- the pet detective’s version of Moby Dick.

Indeed, Vivi has inspired Goin’s latest project: training a detective dog that will alert only on a “hot scent” -- that is, if the missing dog is within very close range, such as 100 feet. “That way, I can track the dog all day long,” preferably while riding a scooter or cart, her dog in her arms rather than at her side. “A Chihuahua probably,” muses Goin, who travels everywhere with a 5-pound “cheerleader” named Paco.

There was another waste of money with a "pet detective" who couldn't even bother to stay long enough to finish the job. Boy.

On that one I have to agree with you anon.Goin wanted publicity more than anything else. She took the plight of a lost show dog and used it as a springboard to further her 'career'. Ka-ching!

You know folks, if Karin had to choose Vivi over finding B.B. King's lost dog, I think she was already pretty popular.

Before judging her, go to the website and read the many other successful rescues. Pretty impressive.

Instead of criticizing Karin, I think it would be nice to thank Denise Flaim for writing this article to help keep Vivi in the news and remind people she is still out there, and people are still working on bringing her home. Let's be appreciative of her support for Vivi.

What professional would accept an assignment, half-ass it, and then run off? How would that go over at your job?

BB King's dog wasn't in the news, Vivi was. Ka-ching ka-ching!

Thank you Denise!
Anonymous, are you talking about Karin or about good ole Harry??
Karin did what was asked of her and we just were not happy with her conclusion.
Now Harry, on the other hand, took the money and ran.
Well... ...ate, checked out the NY Vivi team to see where they may have stashed Vivi, ate, and then ran.
Mila

Both of them are scam artists on the same level as "psychics" and so forth.

Did you people expect Harry to FAST the days he was there? So he stopped and had a couple meals!. Why bash him for it? Its not like he asked to be dropped off at a local watering hole to slam a few back!
IMO,People like Harry, Karin and others like drug and cadavar sniffing handlers have a special level of rescpect with thier K9 partners and a reputation to maintain, So When you slam them you are also slamming thier Dogs! and they are innocent hard working dogs in this.
So, Enough already! get over his eating habits and Grow Up! let the guy be. NO Wonder he was so turned off and reacted as he did!

Poor Harry.....in the end he got his just deserts. Slamming him? Of course..he was a joke. And good fodder for jokes to hide the pain of disapointment for his ineptness.
Karin, on the other hand, really wanted to find Vivi and earned our respect.
Not slamming anyones dogs, just the handler. Get a grip.

Harry Oakes and Valorie did the best they could and what the hell is wrong with getting takeout fried chicken???? Hell of a lot better than polishing off cases of beer in a cemetary.....grow up dummies.....you just don't like where the scents led him....too damn bad!! People who didn't give a penny to get Harry here are doing the most complaining...empty barrels always make the most noise.

How would you know who donated or not unless you were the one taking the donations.

Pls don't believe everything that you read on someone web site..
When karen was looking for Vivi the last time around she was only interested in the camera's surrounding her.. Because her show was coming up soon. So anonymous, you have no idea what you are talking about. get your facts in order first..

ANONYMOUS AT 16:06 ... AND YOU KNOW THIS AS A TRUE AND IRREFUTABLE FACT? GUESS YOU WERE THERE AND YOU READ HER MIND.

Lots of people were very vocal about not donating for Harry to come here....who did and didn't donate wasn't a state secret....wake up and smell the coffee! Beating up on Harry doesn't find Vivi....meanwhile, NO updates and nothing being done to follow up on the two sightings of a man walking a Vivi look alike....more secrets, piled higher and deeper. Meanwhile just keep bashing Harry....that helps a lot, idiots!

Hey ANONYMOUS person,if you are so concerned about the man walking a Vivi look alike, why don't you go stake out the place? Its no big secret. If it was, you wouldn't know about it now would you?
So? Ready to volunteer? Got hundreds of hours to invest VOLUNTEERING? Key word is in caps. Nobody in NY got paid to look for this dog yet you rant that some are obligated to do this. You act like you're entitled to an answer. Why? Who died and left you in charge? How about YOU get off your dead fat arse and go out and look for the dog? We've asked you this numerous times and you just avoid the question. How about it? Put you money where your big nasty mouth is.Whats the matter afraid of the boogey men in Queens?
You can talk the talk but nobody here sees you walking the walk. When you put in the number of hours the VOLUNTEERS have, then you get the right to complain. But until then, shut your fat face. Its the empty barrel between your ears is whats making the most noise here. How about it loser? You have no friends. We all know that. It'll give you something to do. Besides, I'm sure you could use the exercise. Well? Waiting for your answer.............

Ohhh!! Boogy Man!!! I'm Scared!!!

kathy bayside....YOU ARE THE BOOGY MAN! Your brain is scary and be sure to donate it to science.....lol

no way to search cause no locations are ever given.....need intersections and times that man and dog were seen. people usually walk dogs at the same times and in the same areas....can't stake out places cause the info has never been posted and given to people.

Call the Hot Line (which has been in every newspaper, TV station, flyer and poster and this blog), identify yourself to Rosa and explain what you plan on doing. I am sure she will be only too happy to give you all the information she has, which you will find is quite sketchy and limited.

Good luck, let us know when you identify her.

Hey Anonymous. If you don't like the way things were done, why don't you go and look for her yourself. What? I can't hear you!
What?...H'mmm, no response. Amazing how it gets so quiet when a direct questions is asked of Anonymous.

Wooo! I am coming to get you!

Glad to see that others have pick up the mantle of anonymous. My work here is done.

See, there are alot of us who are fed up with the stupidity of the so-called 'Weenie Crew". Acting like 20 year olds instead of the middle aged old bags that you are, swilling beer all weekend in a cemetery and running around like ninnies instead of creating a cohesive plan of action doomed this rescue to the failure that it is.

If you are so fed up with what happened TWO YEARS ago then why don't you pick up the ball and roll with it NOW? Yeah, really easy to sit behind a computer and judge people you've never even met. Typical coward. Typical loser.
And rehashing stuff from TWO years ago really helps now, doesn't it? Whats your point? Instead of complaining about the past, why not do something in the present? Call the 877 #, get the details and get out there and do your own investigation since what has already been done is not to your liking. Think you can do better? Then go right ahead. Nobody here is stopping you. We'll be waiting for your full report.

Your work is done here? Good. Then I guess we won't be reading any of your condescending comments anymore.
Don't let the door hit you in your fat a## on the way out.

Get a grip on reality Anonymous #1, etc. Yes, Vivi wasn't found.
You can only beat the issue to death for so long and this has gone waaaaaaay beyond that. It's very tiring reading the same old rantings and ravings that go on here. It doesn't do any good now to point fingers at what or wasn't done two years ago. The weenie crew and others did try. Were you out there giving up weekends and evenings with posting and searching? You refer to the weenie crew as middle aged bags. I was wondeinrg if you are in the same group because you keep harping on the same issues over and over and over.........really tiring.

No, I'm not one of those pathetic middle aged hags who pretends they're a young 20-something. There are multiple people posting as anon hence many postings of the same tired subjects.

I'm young, thin and rich...later for you losers!

Young thin and rich and you spend so much time on blogs? Maybe young, maybe thin and maybe rich (like we really give a sh*t) which I highly doubt but definitely lonely with an attitude problem.Blogging in place of real friends because you have no human bonds or relationships.Nasty comments in cyberspace because you crave attention. Total loser.Yep. You fit the profle to a T.

VIVI ONLY HAS 4 CANDLES BURNING! PLEASE GO LIGHT A COUPLE FOR HER AND SAY A PRAYER THAT SHE IS SAFE! XOXO ROOBY

What a bunch of jerks have shown up in these blogs.
Get a life a-holes....please don't respond, I think you're nuts anyway. No matter how rude, crude or stupid you are, I don't really give a crap......

Rooby

Rude, crude and stupid? Referring to yourself? You're the idiot with the stupid beer swilling and burping. Pig.

OMG, you creep. I don't drink beer, remember? You have the mouth of a HOG, not PIG..What fly flew up your nose?
Rude? Crude? You betcha you skank. I think I know who you are and it's sad.

In Jesus's name we praise you!!

Hi Vivi, just wanted to post a response to some of the product questions posted in your blog...

It’s no coincidence the product line is called Nutrish. Real meat – like chicken or beef – is the first ingredient. There are no by-products, fillers, artificial flavors or preservatives. Rachael Ray Nutrish is formulated with simple, natural ingredients for the overall health and wellness of dogs. It provides 100% complete and balanced nutrition.

Recognized experts in pet nutrition still debate regularly and often about what exactly constitutes a “by-product” in pet food. The simple truth of the matter is that by-products are not so simple to define and all by-products are NOT created equal.

Ingredients like corn gluten meal and soybean meal are not by-products but are co-products of accepted manufacturing processes. This means in the manufacturing of the ingredient (for example soy beans), a brand new ingredient results (of no less quality – just a new ingredient!). In the case of soy bean meal, the removal of soy bean oil from the soy beans results in a highly concentrated plant protein – and as we’ve discussed in the past, companion animals and dogs in particular need proteins from both animal and plant sources to deliver 100% complete and balanced nutrition as required by AAFCO guidelines.

Other commonly used by-product that we DO NOT use in Rachael Ray Nutrish ™ is meat and bone meal.

For more information about Rachael Ray Nutrish, visit www.nutrishforpets.com

Hey, nutrish, you need to browse some veterinary journals and scientific websites about how soy is not a suitable food for dogs or cats, and even people. Anything that needs so much processing in order to be edible is not good for anyone.

There is a real concern in the veterinary field about the feeding of soy to animals and its estrogenic effects. It is fed to livestock raised for human consumption too, and the bad effects are there in the meat too.

Anyone who is serious about their pet's diet and studies animal nutrition will not buy any dog or cat food with soy in it, or any that is predominantly grains. Meat is preferably 2 ot 3 of the first 4 or 5 ingredients. Wheat and its close relatives rye and barley are very bad too as the gluten is particularly sticky and hard to digest and coats and inflames the digestive tract. Does the same for people. Whole grain brown rice would be preferable grain but not too much of that either. Oatmeal and then corn would follow as far as the type of "gluten". Every celebrity now thinks they can get into the designer dog food market, but don't really know much about animal nutrition. Even Newman's Own Organic uses soy, one of the biggest no nos in animal feed. Never feed a food with soy, wheat, barley, rye especially. These people are looking for cheaper ways than meat to amp up their protein content, for feeding animals that are primarily carnivores yet. And cats are obligate carninvores. They cannot survive in any kind of reasonably good health without meat.

Get a clue, Rachel Ray and all you celebrity dog food makers.
